RSD - A Confusing Twist

Hello all,
I have posted previously with my own RSD problems. I thought I was as confident as the rest of you with this being a hardware issue, (and still 90% confident it is) though I hvae just stumbled across a scenario I want to run past all of you.
I was able to repeat the shutdown every time by putting my MacBook to work exporting a 4 minute video from quicktime. The processor would heat up and down it went (every time). In a continued attempt to find something to report on these boards a thought came to mind. I plugged in my Firewire backup drive and booted my most recent full backup. Upon completion if boot up, I exported my video file and it did not shut down. I ran the "yes" command test, again no shutdown. I found this very disturbing. A random thought then jumped into mind. Do you all remember that when the last OSX update came out, there were two versions. Build 8J2135 and 8J2135a. I don't remember which one was first, but the version of OSX I was running on the internal drive was 8J2135a. The version on my backup drive was 8J2135. The reason for the difference is due to a fresh install of OSX prior to RSD problems. I was having issues with non-related software stuff. Anyway, after this discovery, I used SuperDuper and copied my backup image back onto the internal drive. I have not had an RSD since then. It has been three days now.
This makes no sense to me, and I am not necessarily beating the drum for this being an OSX version issue, but it is interesting. I have already called Applecare prior to the discovery and my return box is in the living room. I am afraid to send it back without a known true fix for the problem though I will if it would just start shutting down again. What do you all think of this. As strange as it seems, could there be something here or is it just another example how truly random this problem is.
All just for your information. We will get to the true proven source eventually, we always do.
Good Luck to All!

I was convinced I had found a solution with the power management as my machine ran great for almost a month without a single RSD after I first experienced it. That’s what makes this problem so frustrating and why you see so many fixes that come at the problem from so many different angles. Many of the fixes seem to work and in theory make sense and only time will tell if they truly work.

• Apple TV and iTunes problem - Different Twist

I, too, can no longer get Apple TVs to show up in my iTunes device list.
It DID work until last week when I downloaded two movies. They ATVs (three of them) got stuck in syncing, and were still "syncing" four days later. I quit the app, restarted it, and now all the ATVs are gone.
The twist is, the ATVs DO show up on my MBP and another iMac on the same local network. Just not on my 27 inch iMac.
I deleted (correctly and completely) iTunes and reinstalled - no success.
I created a new (clean) user account - no success.
I wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled the software - no success.
This HAS to be a hardware problem with the iMac.
Any other ideas or observations or suggestions?

Question: Do you mean you removed the AppleTv from the list in iTunes or the iTunes library from the list in AppleTV Settings>Computers?
Answer: It disappeared from iTunes and couldn't be deleted. I disconnected/deleted from ATV's settings.
OK, good that lets you add the new library to AppleTV
Question: New user account on the computer or new iTunes account added to AppleTV?
Answer: On the iMac. I AM able to connect another Mac's iTunes library to the ATV and sync it. I just can't add or sync THIS one.
You can only sync a single library with AppleTV
Therest are shared/streaming libraries.
Question: Did you have to set them up in AppleTV again or were they sharing libraries always known to appleTV?
Answer: They appeared in the other computers iTunes device lists, saying "Apple TV click to set up" - just as they do at this very minute.
Ah ok, you haven't actually set them up on those machines.
I would turn those off just in case they're interfering with the one you want to sync being allowed a slice of the cake.
Question: If you'd factory restored AppleTV you would have to set these up again on AppleTV.
Answer: I don't understand, but, making an assumption, when I reset the ATV, I downloaded the update, went to connect to the network, and that connection request was received by all Macs on the network (Apple TV click to set up) except the iMac.
I've never had my other macs turned on when trying to add an AppleTV - it's possible they could be causing problems by catching the request for th e5 digit code before the reset computer.
Question: Why both?
Answer: Just for a belt and suspenders - I was troubleshooting.
Question: Do you have 2 separate local networks? If they do not see each other this could be the problem - try both individually if you haven't.
Answer: No, I have only one. And, the iMac can see the other computers, mount them, etc., and vice versa. The ONLY apparent network problem is the ATV/iTunes/iMac problem described here.
I hope I am less confusing now?
Yes, getting clearer!
Do you have any kind of extra firewall/security software on the affected machine eg Little Snitch or something like that?

• Confused about multiple iTunes on same computer

Hiya- I've read as much as I can on multiple iTunes/libraries/accounts and I'm even more confused.
I have one drive partition with all my music which I use as my iTunes library. My wife and I each have our own Windows logins/accounts and access iTunes from each account (sharing the same music folder). This is what I want to do: when I add newly-acquired music to iTunes on my Windows account (i.e. drag new albums onto iTunes and have it copied to iTunes library), I want my wife's iTunes to automatically update its library to see the new albums I've added.
I hope that makes sense. I'm either over-complicating this issue and there's an easy/obvious solution or it can't be done (?) Thanks for any help.
.

Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
As I see it the scenario is this:
An iTunes Library at C:\Users\<User1>\Music\iTunes
An iTunes Library at C:\Users\<User2>\Music\iTunes
both of which point to media at some shared location which for the sake of argument we shall call <Shared>\iTunes Media.
(I've assumed <Shared> is not either of the first two folders, neither of which contain a media folder. If the assumption is false post back and I'll give different instructions)
In this case choose one of the two libraries to be "the one" which both accounts will use from now on. Copy the contents of the iTunes folder from that account into the <Shared> folder. Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down SHIFT until asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library file in the <Shared> folder. Test that all works well. Close iTunes. Since your <Shared> folder is unlikely to be called iTunes, the main iTunes window will probably have had a weird title just now. Create a new folder called C:\iTunes and move everything iTunes related from <Shared> into it, i.e. the library files called *iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel* and the *Album Artwork* and *iTunes Media* folders. You can delete any .xml files as one will be recreated automatically. Now use the SHIFT-start-iTunes method to open the library at C:\iTunes. Test that all is still well. Close iTunes, switch profiles, use the SHIFT-start-iTunes method to open the library at C:\iTunes. Hooray, both profiles are now using the same library. Any updates you make using one profile will be visible when you open the library with the other.
One possible drawback. If you use the fast user switching method to flip between accounts then you have to remember to close iTunes before swicthing otherwise the second user will find the library is locked.

*How to use multiple iPods with one computer*
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
etc.
I currently manage our family's five iPods using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their iPod. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

• I'm having trouble finding twisted-web

I am running x86_64 and trying to install the twisted-web package and I am having some trouble finding it.
I used the package search on the archlinux.org main page and I found a match, but when I try pacman -Sy twisted-web I get "error: 'twisted-web': not found in sync db".
I noticed that it is supposed to be in the extra repository so I checked my pacman.conf and "Extra" is properly configured (and I have installed packages from it before).
I checked the PKGBUILD that was online and it supports x86_64, I then checked my abs directory to see if the PKGBUILD was there (under my /var/abs/extra/network directory) and I found "twisted" but no "twisted-web".
I also searched AUR for twisted-web and came up with nothing, and I assume this is because it is already in the extra repository.
I am new to Arch and I cannot think of anything else to do. My only other thought is that the package page says "out-of-date" so maybe it has been removed from the extra repository or something along those lines, but that seems like a strange thing to do.
Anyway I really like arch and I have looked at several PKGBUILD's already so if its just a matter of making a build for a new version that would be no problem for me to do (and submit it to AUR or a maintainer) I just need a little guidance. Chances are I'm just inexperienced and missing something really obvious.
Thanks for reading
-pilo

Thanks thats really helpful, what confused me was that when I searched for twisted-web from the main page then clicked -> view cvs entries -> pkgbuild -> view, the PKGBUILD there had "arch=(i686 x86_64)" so I thought I should be able to install it.
Im realatively experienced at compiling programs and programming myself so I will take a stab at getting it to compile myself and submit a new PKGBUILD if I get it working.
Thanks a lot for your help, im really liking arch.

• My droid X2 "modem did not power up, starting rsd protocol"

Okay, so i shall first start by saying i dropped my phone over 2 months ago but have NEVER had any problems since then, i do not have a warranty on this phone, and i don't have much money to spend. The day before yesterday my phone started showing "no service" and thinking it would be easily fixed by turning my phone off then on i proceeded to do so only to see the error message "modem did not power up (2), starting RSD protocol"! I was shocked, confused and upset. I don't know what to do, i have tried everything. A friend of mine said that since it is a software problem and not because i had dropped it (months back, and was still working perfectly) that perhaps i could take it back and get it fixed for free? Am i to assume this would be the case or is there more i can do at home to save my phone?! Please, please help!

Try the solutions in this thread. https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/772503 Motorola forums also suggest to simply remove the sim card and reinsert it. Good Luck

• Twist problems/customer support

We purchased a lenovo twist and had issues with the computer and after delays finally received a replacement as we purchased the 3 year warranty. The new computer after around 4 months was a defect as well. A tech came to our house twice to fix the issues and the computer continues not to wor properly. I called tech support for warranty purposes and they were unprofessional. The first lady did not know what to do and had to constantly put me on hold to ask for advice. She did not want to read the notes as there are a lot due to the twist issues. I asked to speak to a supervisor and she denied me at first until I had to be more assertive. Randal who stated he was the only supervisor told me there was nothing he could do but escalate the case. That does not solve the issue of the computers i have received from lenovo be defects and I have completed this process to often. He started to pant and get all worked up as I requested to speak to some other supervisor as I noticed he was having a bad day with the tone he had. He denied this request and stated he is the only one I can talk too. I disagreed and he hung up on me. Later that day I called back again and the tech did a much better job and gave me a case number to have case escalated and stated a supervisor would call between 24-72 hours that is their policy and he would send a box out to mail back the lemon twist. This all took place on Friday and today is Thurs and still no call or box. Just to let everyone know this happened to me last time as well the ball was dropped. This is the reason I was persistent on getting this problem taken care of. I would like a refund or a totally different computer not a twist as they are terrible and have a bad taste about them due to the poor product and costumer service. There is a saying on the machine while you which states they are here to ensure you have a wonderful experience, which I am not having at this moment

stage three finally spoke to an executive and explained my situation I then find out in the conversation he is not with Lenovo company he is part of the resolution center. He stated will forward case to Lenovo and they will get back to me in the famous amount of time within "72" hours heard this story before hope they follow through. At this point I am confused first tech then executive not part of lenovo uhh! The last three people I did speak too were much more professional and actually looked up the case numbers. Would like to say thank you. So now I wait for Lenovo to contact me. Twist still does not connect to internet and that means even when we go out and there is wi fi so its not my network at the house. This is my second Twist.

• Why twist?

The current generation of input profiles that are provided with Lightroom and Camera Raw offer color that is much improved over the previous generation. One source of improvement is the inclusion of non-linear "twists", which make rendering of color dependent on luminosity. Unfortunately, this sensitivity to luminosity also yields color shifts when one adjusts exposure.
I'm confused about an aspect of this. If the intent of the twist is to compensate for luminosity dependence of the sensors, why is this a twist, designed to be applied after the tone curve, rather than an invariant, designed to be applied before the tone curve? If, on the other hand, the twist is designed to compensate for some sort of perception or rendering issue, it should be camera-independent. In that case, is the input profile really the right place for it?
I've experimented a bit with untwisting the standard profile (for a Canon EOS 5D), or making it invariant, using the DCPtool recommended in this forum. Untwisting it often yields ugly color. This is reasonable, and it's basically setting the color profile for a particular luminosity and throwing out the additional information. However, I've been quite pleased with the results of making it invariant.
Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks,
David

Well, if the Adobe Standard Profile does what I think it does (Adobe's never really specified what that is, so far as I'm aware), then the twists would be largely camera-independent. Largely in the sense that there will be some differences in the "from" point of the twist due to cameras having different color responses. So, e.g., a green from a Nikon might (probably) be different to a green from a Canon, even post ColorMatrix - nothing to do with luminosity non-linearities, just because the dyes in the Bayer matrix are different. So the twists will take that into account, I'd think. But the "to" point would be the same.
There's been a lot of academic work on color perception, but I have no idea what Adobe's twists are based on, other than in some case probably they're intended to duplicate in-camera processing. Doubt they'll say either.

• TwinMOs TWISTER

Hello!
I bought 2x 256 Mb TwinMos TWISTER PC 3700 CL 2.5 RAM modules. I used the MSI K8T Neo 1.0 mb, never flashed BIOS. I used the original floppy for installing VIA SATA drivers, I use RAID 0, 2x Maxtor. I am having my RAM tested as I am writing this.
OK, the system worked for one day. I did some installing, I installed a soundblaster. I dont recall doing anything anusual. I need help, couse my system freezes when I try to install Windows.
My friends and I think it may be a hardware problem(RAM or mb)?
Has anyone an idea, what could I try(I could flash BIOS > which to use?), I could do some BIOS changes > which?).
I am stuck for now, but would like to slove the problem fast!
Thx 2 @ll!!
Myk

OK, here is the detailed spec:
-MSI K8T Neo FIS 1.0
(since my friend is at this time working on the system and has said, he updated the BIOS, its the latest version)
-AMD Athlon 64 3000+/512
-2x256MB TwinMos TWISTER PC 3700 cl 2.5(has a 2.8V sticker; at AMD forum site one "pro" said, ....if the CPU doesnt support PC 3700, then it does NOT...; I am getting really confused
-ATI Radeon 9700 (HIS, overclocked to pro, at least it was, since PC is dead)
-2x SATA Maxtor 80Gb 7200rpm, RAID 0
-packed in TT Xaser with Intel 300W power(OK, I know, bad me )
-DVD, CD-RW, floppy
I have removed all other hardware!
A notice: between install of Win, system often fails to copy some file, not specified, another time another file!!, I got a blue scr with possible hardware or software prob, like IRQ, PAGE and NON-PAGE,... something with BIOS chache and shadow, (loaded def!!), and of course some "code" notes.
I have no idea and since the sellers in Slovenia still dont build 64 systems I have no good professional help here.
THERE ARE JUST YOU GUYS!!

• Do I have RSD?

I left my Macbook plugged in overnight the other day. it was was asleep. i woke it in the morning and then shut it down before heading to work. when i closed the screen i noticed that the sleep light was on. not pulsing, just on.
i reopened the screen tried to startup and nothing happened. i tried repeatedly with and without the powercord with no luck. finally, i removed the battery and tried again. the computer started and i got the message that said OSX unexpectedly quit. no problems since.
this has happened a couple times, but only when waking from a long sleep. is this RSD, a battery issue or software issue?

First off... don't worry... this isn't the RSD issue. As it's name implies... RSD = Random Shut Down. Basically what happens with the RSD is that your machine just goes off while you're using it.
One thing to check in your case, you mentioned it was sleeping and then you shut it down and that the sleep light was on but not pulsing. This sometimes happens if you shut your machine down, but close the lid before it is completely shutdown. Basically, your machine is in the process of shutting down, then you close the like and it thinks it's supposed to go to sleep and it gets sort of confused. Just make sure the sleep indicator is off after a shutdown before closing your lid.

• Are RSDs really caused by hardware??

I'm becoming slightly skeptical about it...
I guess I'll start with my experience with RSDs:
So I bought my MacBook back in May (week 21). Everything was pretty good, except for the whine and moo, but I decided I could live with those. Anyway, up until yesterday, I was sure I wouldn't be getting the random shutdowns, but alas, I did:
I had recently bought a Mighty Mouse, so I plugged that in and messed with some of the preferences. Then I opened Safari, Mail, and iChat. Everything was OK, but then I opened iTunes, and it shut down.
At first, I tried starting the computer again. It worked, but about a minute after loading, it shut down again. So, remembering that people said RSDs don't happen in Windows, I started up with it, to look for a solution. I found one, but it involved going into Mac OS X. Then I remembered that taking the battery out also seemed to work. Doing that, I started up in Mac OS X, and had no problems.
The solution involved deleting some extention files, rebooting, and then replacing them, deleting them, rebooting, replacing them, checking this and that etc. I really didn't have the time for all of that, so I just deleted the extentions, rebooted and replaced one of them (the AppleSmartBatteryManager.kext or something). After that, I had no shutdowns. BUT it still happened when I ran yes >/dev/null/ in two terminal windows. So that confused me a little.
Anyway, the top 4 reasons I'm skeptical are:
1. Running under Windows = no RSD
2. With the AppleSmartBatteryManager.kext? deleted and replaced it worked.
3. No battery = no RSD
4. All the above three are slighty related (Windows = no .kext file, and I'm not sure about this one, but if there is no battery there is no communication with the .kext file??)
Anyway, sorry for the really long post... I'm just really hoping I don't have to go through what so many people seem to be (getting their logic boards replaced, only to find it didn't resolve the problem, or it doesn't pass final testing by Apple).

MacBook 1.83GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1 GB RAM / 100 GB HD

Hi Zeb,
I think for most people, the RSD is a hardware problem. When you remove the battery I believe your MacBook starts up and is locked at 1/2 speed or 1.0GHz. you can see if it's a processor load, heat register type problem running in this fashion will certainly mask it.
You can also try shutting it down and then hold the powerbutton down until you hear a tone. This forces the CPU to half speed as well and many people report no RSD's.
As far as Windows is concerned, are all the drivers loaded and are you running at full CPU speed? If so I would be concerned that those not experiencing RSD's could actually overheat thier systems.
I too tried some of the "software" fixes and it did not last for mine. In fact once mine shutdown while running off the install DVD I knew it was a hardware problem.

• Apple ID appearing on another iPhone device (Sync confusion)

Issue
iTunes is sporadically requesting access to my partner's Apple ID account when downloading applications and trying to install the other iTunes account applications also when syncing takes place within iTunes. System software/accounts seems confused.
How can I ensure that both devices remain separate and do not access each other's iTunes accounts or sync over Mac logins? How can I delete mixed applications from separate Apple ID's ensuring it won't replicate the deletion on the primary Apple ID?
Background
1 x Macbook Pro OS 10.8.2
iTunes 11.0.1
App Store 1.2.1
1 x iPhone 4S OS 6.0.1 (Device A)
1 x iPhone 4 OS 6.0.1 (Device B)
Separate Apple ID's
Separate iCloud accounts
iTunes accounts
Both people have our own iTunes accounts linked to their own device. All details are currently correct when checking Apple ID profiles.
MacbookPro
Both people have separate MacBook Pro logins and software is all up to date.
History
In the past, over a year ago, both iPhone devices were sync'd via the same iTunes and Macbook log in. (Not a good start I know) Both iPhones always had their own iTunes account for downloading apps and music etc. When I realised I was syncing application data from one iPhone to the other on my Macbook, I created two Macbook log ins. I deleted all applications on Device B that were transferred from Device A and also deleted the applications in Device B's iTunes account. It seemed that both devices finally had seperated, retained their own Apple ID logins, applications and Macbook user logins.
Device B recently tried to install an application that Device A also had.
The application installed onto Device B without an issue and there was no confusion with Device A having the same application. The application can be upgraded to provide additional functionality. When Device B requested this within the application to upgrade, the Apple ID of Device A suddenly appeared.
I checked that Device B was asked to INSTALL the primary basic version of the application rather than OPEN it, just incase the confusion started at this point. It definitely said INSTALL.
I thought the divorce was done and dusted in the past.
Why would Device B suddenly point Device A's Apple ID?
To troubleshoot, I connected Device B to iTunes on the MacBook with Device B's Macbook log in. When iTunes opened within the Apple ID of Device B ALL DEVICE A applications appeared and started to sync these applications to Device B! I am back to mixed accounts.
How can ITunes suddenly connect the Apple ID's of both accounts and then tell Device B it needs to install Device A's applications? They are separate Apple ID accounts, separate copyright, separate costs.
I know with iMatch that you can share the library with another device and when this occurs it locks the Apple ID of the primary iTunes account for 90 days on secondary device. We have never done this.
I'm 'Syncing' trying to work this one out, please help!

Can someone please explain and help me? I am unlocking an iphone4 from at&t to use it on the straight talk network. They've confirmed my request to do this and I am now a little confused as to what to do next. They want me to back up the phone using itunes on either a MAC or PC. I do not have an aplle computer but I do have an acer. Sooo, can I use it to do this? Or do I even have to do this to unlock and switch the iphone4 over to a new network? If I do have to what can I do to do this because like I said I do not have a computer by apple? Can anybody walk me through what I need to do next please? I've been waiting to do this for a very long time and I now have the option to have an iphone and use it. Thanks to my awesome boyfriend who Gave me his old iphone when he swapped back to an android. Hahahaha! Please anybody!? Because I sooo don't know what I'm doing and really do not want to mess the phone Or the process up. Thanks to any and all who read this and help me! It is greatly appreciate it!

Install iTunes on your Acer and you can back up the iPhone. Or back it up to iCloud. If you do not back it up you can get it unlocked, but you will lose all of your content.
You can get iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes.
Even after unlocking I'm not sure it will work on Straight Talk, because last time I checked ST used Verizon as its carrier, and an AT&T iPhone 4 is not compatible with Verizon's network. You can probably use it on Net 10 or T-Mobile once it is unlocked.

• Computers on small office network - names getting confused on iChat

We are using bonjour and iChat on the computers on a small airport network in our office as an instant messaging solution in our office - however, 2 of the computers (which are named differently) keep getting confused and both being called the same name.
I have done the fix where you go to System Prefs, Users & Groups and then set the address book card to that particular computer owner, restart the computer and then open iChat (using bonjour) - it saves the name but then my colleague becomes the same name as me on iChat - so we do the same thing to her computer (set address book card etc) and it changes her iChat name, but then also seems to override what I had set for mine previously.
Help!! What can I do to stop these 2 computers seemingly overriding each other? It doesn't happen with the other 4 computers sharing our network...

Hi,
In System Preferences > Sharing is the Name the Computer has.
This does play a part in any Bonjour Connection.
It is this name that appears in Shares in the Finders's Side bar.
Separate for that iChat and Messages that have the Bonjour Account Enabled broadcast the details from the My Card in the Address Book.
Issues can arise with some Server based Logins that create a Global Address book that changes the My Card.
You get similar difficulties on some DiskImage roll outs of updates and the like if the details of the Address Book are copied as well.
I am not sure what you mean by the "fix" in System Preferences > Users and Groups to change the My Card or the Computer's Name.
Yes you can click the Contact Card for that account and it will show you it in the Address Book and it should be th My Card.
Changing the My Card then does not alter which Card is associated with the Mac User Account.
There is no access to the Computer's Name

• Unable to capture video from canon xha1s to final cut pro 6.0. so confused

hi,
i purchased a canon xha1s and am simply trying to capture the video onto my macbook pro laptop. i keep getting the error saying my settings are incorrect and am confused as what to put and where. i went to the video/audio settings and put what i believed to be correct (HDV) since my camcorder records in HDV. still that error window pops up when i try to log and capture footage.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
