RSD fixed by Logic Board or Heatsink/Top Case or Both?

It appears from reading all the posts on RSD, that some/many of those who have had only the Logic Board replaced have had recurring shutdowns.
But those who have had the heat sink/top case replaced (with or without a logic board) appear to not have had further problems.
Is that the consensus from those who have had RSD work done by Apple?

from what i've read on a german forum, the problem comes from the heatsink cable, and i saw a more-than-easy manipulaton to fix the problem but lost the page, searching for it .... the guy who tried it has no RSS since...

Am 21.07.06 haben wir an einen unserer Kunden ein schwarzes MacBook 2.0GHz, mit einer RAM Erweiterung auf 2GB verkauft. Der Kunde hat sich das MacBook selbst installiert, und war zunächst zufrieden. Als er jedoch einen Bekannten mit dem selben Modell traf, stellte sich heraus, dass seines merklich langsamer lief, als das andere.
Desweiteren traten nicht nachvollziehbare Abstürze des Systems auf.
Nach unserer Rücksprache mit einem Bekannten (Techniker bei Cancom) bestellten wir 2 neue RAM Module.
Zwischenzeitlich hatte das MacBook auch das Bekannte “Ausschalt Problem”.
Wir tauschten die eingebauten 2 x 1GB RAM Module gegen die Neuen aus, aber dies brachte jedoch nicht den erhofften Effekt.
Auf unserern Wunsch bestellte Cancom eine neue Hauptplatine, und tauschte sie am 09.08.06 im MacBook aus. Dies half zwar bezüglich der Geschwindigkeit (wie oben beschrieben), behob jedoch nicht das “Ausschalt Problem”. Cancom erklärte sich bereit, nochmals eine neue Hauptplatine zu bestellen, welche am 23.08.06 neu eingebaut wurde. Wiederum war das “Ausschalt Problem” nicht beseitigt. da wir zu diesem Termin bei Cancom Vorort waren, rief der Techniker in unserem bei sein die Apple Servicepartner Hotline an. Er informierte den Apple Ansprechpartner über die Problematik und die bereits durchgeführten Tätigkeiten,
auch darüber, dass Cancom selbst auch bereits 3 Kunden mit dem “Ausschalt Problem” hätte. Der Apple Mitarbeiter gab zu, dass das Problem bekannt sei, er aber aktuell keine Lösung zur Hand hätte. Er versprach dies hausintern zu klären, und am nächsten Tag bescheid zu geben. Er tat dies auch, mit folgendem Hinweis:
Die Anschlußkabel der Hitzesensoren an den Kühlkörpern der Prozessoren seien so nah (zu nah) an den Kühlkörpern selbst verlegt, dass die Isolierung schmelze und einen Kurzschluß verursache. Hierduch schalte sich das MacBook einfach ab.
Sobald das MacBook abkühle, würde der Abstand wieder ausreichen bis zur nächsten Erwärmung dieser.
Ein Austauschen der Hauptplatine würde nichts ändern, da die Kühlrippen und die Kabel nicht an dieser befestigt wären.
Apple arbeite gerade an einer Modifikation, habe aber noch keine neuen austauschbaren Ersatzteile.
Apple empfehle den Technikern die Kabel eigenständig mit Hilfsmitteln (Isolierband) zu isolieren, und den Verlauf der Kabel soweit weg wie möglich von den Kühlkörpern zu fixieren.
Der Cancom Techniker folgte den Anweisungen, und seit diesem Zeitpunkt (24.08.06) läuft das MacBook unseres Kunden problemlos….

    Hi there, I have taken my iBook (dual USB, @ 700MHz, 20 GB HDD) to this Apple Store in Buenos Aires, which I'm pretty sure has a fried Logic Board.
    They told me up front that the cost wil be around 700 U$S, and that the warranty will be 90 days. I'm not thrilled at all for the warranty, I expect to be a lot longer after spending all that money!
    Anyways, a couple of questions:
    1- Is 90 days a regular warranty period, or am I being robbed?
    2- Aside from replacing the Logic Board with a new one, is there anything I can do to fix a Logic Board?
    (Anything I can solder, for instance; or something like that?)

    No, the iBook does not show the "classic" Logic Board symptoms, it simply does nothing at all when plugged and the power button is pressed, nothing at all. (Tried with two different batteries, w/o batteries, w/o the extra RAM, w/o the AirPort card... Nothing, in any case)
    Left it on the Apple Store, they will open it for 20 U$S and let me know on Thursday what it is going on with it, and see if I accept the charges for the repair.
    The problem of getting a MacBook is that if repairing the iBook is expensive, getting a MacBook costs some 2000 U$S down here
    I guess if everything goes bad with the local Apple Store here (have to pay 700 + U$S for the job, etc. pretty much what I expect) I'll wait and see if I can send it to DT&T, what they offer is simply amazing, not only the price, but also the 6 months warranty.

  • RSD No More! Got my MacBook with updated logic board and heatsink

    I've just got back from the Apple store with my freshly repaired MacBook. Since I dropped it in last week, a lot has happened. Most importantly, Apple officially recognised the 'MacBook Shutting Down Intermittently' (aka RSD syndrome) problem.
    After having the repair confirmed to me by AppleCare, the guys and the Genius Bar told me that the fix is indeed a redesigned heat sink. They are now completely confident that the problem is fixed, unlike last week when they were replacing the logic board because they couldn't think it was anything else.
    I'll see how it goes, but according to the official word from Apple, all is now well!

    Nice. Glad your MB came back good as new, and hopefully it runs that way for a good few years, and that mine comes back in the same order (RSD intensive care). thing is, considering the span of RSD examples throughout the week build range, i doubt very much that it matters at all, since the earliest and latest MB's have had examples go on the fritz. if indeed there is a newly designed heatsink, it would still take a while for MB's at large to see this change, since there are many many more that remain unsold in apple store and reseller alike. more likely many wouldnt see the change until they either buy a macbook much later, or have to get theirs repaired. either way ill be pleased if this is all true, and i wont tell my macbook about the betrayal i was plotting against it.

    There may be temperature sensors or fan connections off the board that differ, plus the front-panel board. One way to find out is to actually try it and see what happens. You do need to make sure that you have a compatible power supply, though, as that mismatch would no doubt be a complete show stopper.

  • Kernal Panics/Logic Board/RAM

    My Powerbook recently died whereby I kept getting the "You must restart your computer message...."
    I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it appears that the issue is Defective or incompatible RAM, as many forum messages have expressed.
    Now this is fine, but I took it into my local Apple Shop who said that, given the particular specifications of the G4 12inch, RAM is split between Logic Board and somewhere else (sorry, I forget), and that I could only fix the problem by replacement of Logic Board AND RAM. Price quoted was £660. Quote was given without them turning Laptop on, although to be fair I had brought the Error Message in full into the Shop.
    So my question is, could it be possible that the Logic Board is not defective, and how do I go about testing this?
    I want to exhaust all avenues before I put this to bed, because given the Price quoted it would be nonsensical to get it fixed.
    Secondly, is there anyway I can extract all my photo's/music from my Laptop if I have to concede defeat on this?

    Weidly, ran Hardware Test again last night before reposting and this time came up with following Error Message:
    2NVD/5/4: 2122
    Do anyone know what this message means?
    First thing I'd say was take it apart and examine the built in with a microscope. You'd be looking for bad/broken solder joints or solder "whiskers".
    I would be possible to replace it if it was a problem if you were in the states. We have people that do that here. I'm surprised it can't be done in UK or at least we haven't heard of people doing it.
    I've also heard of people running without it.
    It's right there on top of the board but the top case and the top shield has to come off.
    Therefore I need to replace logic board. Any ideas of cost (£660 seems high given that I could replace/upgrade Laptop for less)?.
    £660 seems outrageous!
    Even DT&T services would be cheaper it's just the shipping. How do these guys in Hong Kong do it? I just bought a iBook charger for $27 shipped. Shipping was like $4 from Hong Kong?

  • Any free logic board replacements in 2007?

    I got my logic board replaced on my iBook G3 once before under the replacement program. Imagine my surprise when it died again.
    I've read here in the forums how people have successfully lobbied for a logic board replacement past the 3 year window. Has anyone been successfully recently in doing this? I called Customer Relations and they told me there was no way I could get a replacement. Any tips on how to get this done?

    The most recent report I've seen was this one, received last month from Europe.
    You may want to try calling Apple again at (800) 767-2775 and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
    If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
    [Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

    If Apple doesn't come through, and the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
    Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. Rumor has it that can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.

    Well i dont have it yet, but i was just wondering, how easy is it to fix blown logic boards.
    From the picture i have seen it looks like a resistor near the processor.
    its a g4 1.33ghz board, and the blown one is just below the "G" where it says thermal gasket.

    If you can do component-level board soldering -- or can find someone who can -- then it might be possible.
    Generally bad boards are just swapped out and repaired who knows where by specialists in fixing this sort of thing.
    Hope you aren't paying much for this.
    Keep in mind, that if one component goes, it can easily take others with it.
    IMHO it seems unlikely that it is a resistor that is blown. Usually it is capacitors that "blow".

    How's the heatsink related to logic board? Is it etched to the logic board or are they seperated? Does a replacement of logic board also replace the heatsink?

    So according to what you say, my RSD problem is still not solved.
    That's jumping to conclusions.
    There are many possible reasons why a computer might suddenly shut down.
    With the first version of the MacBook many people reported the following:
    a) The computer would shut down many times, seemingly at random.
    b) After waiting a while they were able to turn the computer back on again.
    c) Either replacing the heat sink assembly or installing the SMC firmware update fixed the problem.
    But I see from one of your other posts that in your case:
    a) You had only one shut down.
    b) Your MacBook would not start up at all afterwards.
    c) The shut down occurred after you'd installed the SMC firmware update.
    This suggests that in the case of your MacBook the shutdown had a different cause and would therefore require a different remedy.
    I recommend you just use your MacBook normally. After a while you will be able to judge whether the shop has correctly diagnosed and fixed the problem.

    Less than a year after purchasing a brand new, early-2011 Macbook Pro (still covered under Extended Apple Care) and, sadly, only a week or two after finally upgrading to 8GB RAM, I returned to my notebook after taking a shower and watched it suddenly shut itself down. It has not been responsive to the power button since then (although, see below.. I think I can fix it).
    Genius Bar took one look at the visible moisture sensor you can see underneath where the RAM sits and declared it water-damaged. While I agree that either a short and/or corrosion is causing my MBP to malfunction, I don't believe it should void my warranty because the problem isn't that I spilled something on it.1
    I hope someone can give me some insight into fixing this myself. Apple says "the Logic Board needs replaced" (a common CS response, I've noticed) the water damage voids my Extended Care + that it'll be at least $1200 and several weeks. Here's the situation:
    MBP will not turn on just by pressing the power button. However, MBP consistently (every time) powers up when I do an SMC reset.
    I have it in verbose mode and it begins booting. But, it will invariably turn off without warning anywhere between 30 seconds and 8-10 minutes after powering up.

    Eighty percent of the time, it turns off during the pre-Xorg boot. However, I have also seen it fully boot, I log in, I'm able to peruse logfiles/etc. Safe Mode (holding shift) crashes early. Single-user mode makes no difference. PRAM/NVRAM/etc makes no difference. I can boot to the Recovery Partition but it turns off just the same (disk utility scan takes too long).
    I haven't been able to really test the Internet Recovery because the hotel wireless takes too long. I did boot into Hardware Test and it passed the basic and extended tests (although it seemed to just be testing the RAM integrity.
    I can boot from the optical drive with a FreeBSD 9 livecd and an Ubuntu 11.04 livecd. Of note is that the laptop shuts off consistently when FreeBSD begins the journaling services for the ZFS filesystem (every time).
    Here is where this leads me to believe I'm at (I am not dogmatic here and would appreciate any corrections or insight):
    It seems like there may be corrosive damage on the logic board but maybe it's isolated given the various consistencies in what's happening. It seems like whenever SATA is use, I lose power. When SATA isn't really used (the HW Test), the laptop has literally stayed on for days and days.
    I want to get in there and clean up any corrosion with 91% isopropyl alcohol (9% distilled, non-conductive water).
    I want to use a bootable OSX livecd with an "emergency console" so I can, basically, use boot options to step throught the boot process and see if I can isolate the problem.
    Here is what I'm uncertain about and could use guidance:
    Does any of this sound remotely reasonable to anyone who has been through this or am I delusional?
    Any tips on identifying and cleaning any corrosion?
    While I had made a bootable version of Lion via Disk Utility and a rescue disk with some third-party app, they are MIA and I don't have another Mac at the moment. Do I have any other options? Again, an install dvd is not exactly what I want -- more like a rescue dvd. I had read about some Apple Stores giving/copying bootable USB thumb drives like this to customers. But, I noticed that this is now on sale there for $80. I would use this like once and, ideally, could use my MBP to make more. $80 seems a bit much.
    I should be able to step through the boot process in a way like what's possible with FreeBSD, no?
    Anyone have any other specific troubleshooting tips?

    To be totally honest, about 3 weeks prior I spilled some milk from cereal on the desk and a little bit got onto the battery. However, the notebook worked fine for the following weeks. I believe that the problems have been caused by ambient humidity ... I've been staying in a hotel that steams up the entire room when I take a shower. The windows are covered in water droplets so why wouldnt the MBP be affected? As noted, these problems began after I lingered in a hot shower.

    While searching on Google for answers regarding logic board problems, I found an interesting MacFixIt article. Unfortunately I'm not sure how many of you read it because I could only access it now through Googles cache.
    From the article:
    We continue to report on an issue where their MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (Late 2006) displays flicker or suffer from appearance of horizontal distortion lines. This issue is reminiscent of a problem that plagued some iBook G4s, generally resolved by logic board replacement.
    It now appears that Apple is replacing specific parts to remedy this issue, though a parts shortage problem may be causing delays. It also appears that this issue is not directly related to any defect in the display, as that is not the part being replaced in most cases. Instead, the logic board seems to be implicated.
    I hope this may be of some assistance to those of you suffering screen problems.

  • Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board?

    My ethernet port went dead on my IMac.  I unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged it into my laptop and it worked instantly.  I am still able to connect wirelessly.  I bought an apple USB to Ethernet converter and plugged it in.  It worked for about 3 days and then it went dead.  Once again I was able to unplug the ethernet cable, plug it into my laptop and instantly had a connection.  Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board and if not how do I figure out which logic board I need?

    This problem baffled me. I kept getting the "ethernet cable unplugged" error after testing my cables good. Was abut to write it off as port gone bad when I found this thread.
    The YouTube video reference above fixed my problem. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1P6X87qArs)
    Basically go to SETTINGS/NETWORK. Then highlight your ETHERNET port and click the ADVANCED button. From there click the HARDWARE tab.
    Set
    CONFIGURE to MANUALLY
    SPEED to whatever your ethernet speed is, in my case 1000baseT
    DUPLEX - FULL DUPLEX, FLOW CONTROL
    Leave MTU at Standard
    Hit OK.
    Then don't forget to hit APPLY. I didn't do this the first couple of times assuming hitting OK applied these settings. You gotta hit APPLY.
    In about two seconds, my Ethernet connected again.
    I went back and reset it to AUTOMATIC just to test and after doing so got the cable unplugged error again. So I am leaving it on manual and it's working.

    No, fix that I know of.
    A data recovery place may be able to do it but it is not cheap. The data on the iPod is encrypted and that makes data recovery hard.

    if the Genius is correct and the logic board is bad, then replacing the logic board would be fairly expensive. What problems are you seeing with your MacBook Pro that caused you to visit the Genius in the first place? Whether it’s worth trying to fix it or not depends on your particular circumstances, such as your willingness to trade time for money in pursuing repair vs. replacement.
