RSS Feed Counter

I have subscribed to the Ars Technica Infinite Loop RSS feed (FeedBurner) and notice that whenever a new topic is added that a number appears in parentheses next to the Infinite Loop link in my Safari Bookmarks Bar. If there have been five new posts there is a (5). I tested this on the feed to my iWeb blog page and it doesn't seem to offer that feature to my subscribers. Is that something that Feedburner offers that iWeb doesn't? Or it does, but I have not set it up right or am not testing it right.

I think it should work. Check your Safari preferences in the RSS tab. Make sure you have things set to "Automatically update articles in the Bookmarks Bar". And then I usually set the "Remove articles" setting to Never. Otherwise, it's possible that you will not see some feed episodes that been updated.

  • RSS Feed Counts not updating between computers via iCloud

    MobileMe used to sync my read counts for my RSS feeds in Safari. If I read something on my iMac, my mbair shows that article as read. This no longer seems to work with iCloud. Has anyone found a work around? I like checking RSS feeds via Safari, but without this feature I might have to go another route.

    Having this issue, too, and not really able to find anything out on the interwebs -- is this supposed to be a feature of iCloud? It certainly should be, and I really, really miss my read/unread status being synced between machines like it was with MobileMe.

  • RSS - can't load any RSS feed

    I use RSS daily. This afternoon it stopped working. My feeds stopped getting updated, and then I realized I cannot load any RSS feed in Safari.
    If for example I try:feed://www.apple.com/main/rss/hotnews/hotnews.rss, I just see a blank safari window, and at the bottom it says... "contacting www.apple.com". It never times out with an error message. It just doesn't seem to be able to get the feed. This is true for all of my feeds, and any new ones I try to view.
    RSS works normally in other accounts on my computer, so the problem is local to my account.
    I have seen others post here with similar problems, but I can't find any answers for my issue. Anyone have any suggestions?

    OK, Looks like I solved my problem. I am posting what I did here in case it helps anyone else with the same problem.
    Over at Mac OSX Hints, I found the following post: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070916123611119
    -x- snip -x-
    +"I have experienced this problem several times in the past few years, both on a G4 PowerBook and Intel iMac. For no reason, Safari will stop updating my RSS feed counts in the Bookmarks bar. RSS still functions and will update whenever a particular feed is selected, but the parenthetical numbers for each feed or folder do not change.+
    +The fix is simple and doesn't hurt any of your RSS subscriptions. Just quit Safari, remove the Database3 file located in ~/Library » Syndication, and then launch Safari again. I move mine to the Desktop and trash it only after I've successfully restarted Safari and confirmed the problem is fixed. Safari will create a new file in its place.+
    +Easy enough, but I've never seen it anywhere else online, and have forgotten it myself a few times."+
    -x- snip -x-
    So I followed this and moved the database3 file out of the ->Library->Syndication folder, restarted Safari, and now RSS seems to be working normally.
    By the way, instead of deleting the database3 file,I just moved it to the desktop, until I can confirm that everything is working correctly, and I will delete it later.
    Hope this is of some help to you if you are having similar RSS problems in Safari.

  • Unread RSS feeds incorrect in Bookmarks bar

    Since moving to 10.5 the RSS feed counts in the bookmarks bar is often incorrect. I can read each feed in the pulldown menu and all the numbers for unread feeds are gone in the pulldown, yet, in the bookmarks bar it will say 1, 2, or 3 still to be read.
    To clear that number, I select View All RSS Articles, and the number sets to blank. Also, clicking on a feed that I have read and cleared will often clear the unread number to show nothing.
    This does not happen every time, but usually at least once a day.

    Update to the unread RSS count:
    I have discovered that different RSS feeds sometimes do not show that that there are unread feeds. When I go to reading all RSS feed options, I have looked and find what are the unreads. It is always a feed that had not shown it had unread entries when I opened Safari. It seems to usually occur in the first 4 of the 19 feeds in the menu bar. I can go several days with no problems, then other days it happens almost every time I look.

  • RSS Feeds Just Really Flaky?

    I posted earlier about Safari 3.0/Windows and erratic RSS feed counts.
    The last week or so, Safari isn't even updating RSS feed counts at all in the Bookmarks Bar.
    But, if I VISIT the bookmark, THEN the RSS feed count updates (which is totally useless )
    Is the whole RSS thing just broken in this Windows beta? (No problems with the OSX 3.0 beta and RSS, btw)

    Safari 3.0.3 and I'm having the same problem. Sometimes I look up and the counts are updated, but I can't tell what causes it to refresh. Of course, I wouldn't be writing here if the time the updates appear had anything at all to do with the timer set in Preferences. I can use Safari all day, with a 30 minute refresh count, and count doesn't update on the bookmark bar. Why Jobs have you forsaken me?

  • RSS feeds slow, counter not updating after reading

    Until recently, my RSS feeds were functioning normally. They loaded quickly and once read, the counter would reset to zero. This is no longer so. Thinking that I had too many feeds (about 90) I've subdivided them into several folders each containing 20 feeds or so which I open individually in tabs. The problem however persists.
    The other annoying aspect is that once a feed has been read/clicked, the counter still shows as if I have unread feeds.
    I've deleted the preference files and unchecked the fraudulent security tab but it has made no diference.
    Many thanks,
    Leonardo

    Go to the Finder: Your User Account>Library>PubSub>Database folder. There, move the Database.sqlite3 to the desktop and restart Safari. Let me know if the feeds now correctly update. If they do, you'll need to reset any custom settings in the feeds.

  • Getting your RSS feed to work without .Mac

    OK, so there have been a few people asking about this and I have figured out a way around it. I must warn you it is not a simple solution, but if you are comfortable using Text Edit to modify the code of your pages, it is a piece of cake - but still fairly tedious. If anyone has a quicker solution, please let us know! I would love to come up with an apple script to automate this process, but that takes time...
    The reason Apple says you can only use the RSS subscribe feature by using a .Mac account is because iWeb creates an additional directory that those of us using 3rd party servers don't use. They do this to separate multiple iWeb sites on your .Mac account. When you publish to a file, that extra directory is the parent folder that you extract each page's file from to load to your public_html folder on your server, so you end up not using that iWeb site folder.
    For example, in publishing to .Mac, I will find my Blog rss.xml file on my iDisk under Web/Sites/iWeb/BookEndMedia/Blog/rss.xml, creating the URL of http://web.mac.com/audiogeek/BookEndMedia/Blog/rss.xml. In publishing to my 3rd party server with domain www.bookendmedia.com, that file is found in public_html/Blog/rss.xml, creating the URL of http://www.bookendmedia.com/Blog/rss.xml.
    The problem arises in iWeb's creation of the rss.xml file, blog-main.xml file, and blog-archive.xml file, which are all located in the Blog folder. Each of these files create links to the Entries files and jpegs, and in doing so adds the BookEndMedia directory, which is does not exist in our 3rd party server.
    The way I found to fix this is after publishing and before uploading to open all 3 files mentioned above in Text Edit, hit Command F to find and replace all instances of "/BookEndMedia/" with "/", removing the extra directory from all links.
    There is however one more glitch I found that has nothing to do with the extra directory. These .xml files that iWeb creates look for all jpegs from each entry in the Media folder. iWeb now stores these files in the same folder as the blog entry. Instead of changing each link in the .xml files, I simply copied each jpeg into the Media file.
    After doing all this I now have a functioning RSS feed that any RSS reader can subscribe to and even see the pictures. The only problem is every time I post I have to go through all this again with each .xml file and copying the new entry's jpeg into the Media folder.
    Hopefully Apple will come up with a way for iWeb to distinguish if you are publishing to a folder and write the appropriate code for creating these .xml files. Until then, we will have to do these extra steps to get what we want - or we can come up with an Apple Script to save us some time (anyone?).
    In the mean time I will count my blessings in the fact that thanks to iWeb I only have to modify 3 .xml files and not write code for every single page of my site.
    Hope this helps, and if anyone has any suggestions, please let us know!
    And please feel free to give me feedback on my site.
    Thanks!

  • Script to open RSS feed url's and post those in the background to a webpage

    Dear everyone,
    Im trying to work on a script that should do:
    - Read My Apple mail RSS feeds every 120 seconds
    - extract a NUMBER from the links from those RSS feeds
    - then post them to a website url site.com/rss.php?id=<extracted id>
    - It should run totally in the background of my apple
    - The links should be posted in the background also without opening any browser or safari
    Is this possible?
    I have my apple now 4 months and this is my first applescript project, so its a bit too much for me, ive spend several hours investigating on how to do this can someone help me out a bit please?
    on idle
    if application "Mail" is running then
    -- read RSS feeds from apple mail
    -- Extract link ID www.site.com/?id=12345
    -- Post Id 12345 to http://site.com/rss.php?id=<the id>
    end if
    return 120
    end idle

    Read My Apple mail RSS feeds every 120 seconds
    Start by using a different RSS application.
    Mail.app doesn't provide any access to RSS feeds via AppleScript, so there is no chance of doing this with Mail.app (or, at least, no easy way to do so).
    Try something like NetNewsWire instead.
    Once you have a viable app, the first part is pretty straightfoward:
    on idle
     if application "NetNewsWire" is running then
      --extract a NUMBER from the links from those RSS feeds
      tell application "NetNewsWire" to set numLinks to total unread count
     end if
     return 120
    end if=idle
    From here, though, I don't know what you're trying to do. You say:
    then post them to a website url site.com/rss.php?id=<extracted id>
    Do you mean you want to post the number of RSS messages (since that's what you asked for earlier), or do you mean you want to re-post the RSS articles? Or do you mean you want to download the links and re-post the entire linked article?
    That's three options (and there are probably more), each of which require a different approach.

  • Safari 5.1.5 (Windows) RSS unread count no longer working

    With the previous version of Safari under Windows 7(SP1) the 'unread count' for the RSS feed bookmarks were only updated when Safari was restarted. This was bad enough, but now with Safari 5.1.5 they don't appear at all.
    I've even gone so far as removing every bit of Apple software (Safari, iTunes, iCloud, Mobile Me, Bonjour etc), removed all data in the user profile, rebooted a couple of times and completely reinstalled Safari iCloud and iTunes but still not working.
    I've been Googling about it but I couldn't find much about it, only confirmation of my previous problem (the need to restart Safari to update the counts)
    Am I the only one with this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thx, Tim

    @sean0826 -- this is why you don't use Java menus. Even javascript menus are a bad idea; you need to have a secondary menu system ANYTIME you have a menu system that requires a plugin or scripting to be active. NOT EVERYONE browses with that stuff on.
    The only thing you can do for now is FTP to your site and add in static menus (like we did in the "old days" at the bottom of the page; or rip out the Java Menus and install static or CSS versions.
    BTW where are you rmenus supposed to be. I have opera, safari, ff, and a few others. they all look the same. So if that's true, it's the plugin that's the problem, not safari.
    In Opera Pogo.com works. java loads, the game is there. It does have some drawing issues but not surprised.
    In Safair Pogo works fine. Just played a game of chess.

  • IWeb09 RSS Feed Button not providing the correct URL

    I use iWeb 3.0.1 and MobileMe to host my own domain. However, I want to add a Blog with RSS feed. When I insert the RSS Feed button it creates a link to http://www.<domain>/username>/Blog/rss.xml. This doesn't work in RSS readers since the path is not valid.
    However, if I manually edit my RSS reader to point to http://web.me.com/<domain>/<username>/Blog/rss.xml it correctly finds the RSS XML file indicating that the Blog pages are being published correctly.
    Is there a bug in iWeb or have I not configured something properly? I can't find a way to manually edit the RSS feed button.

    Your domain uses URL forwarding with masking. It has no meaning for links. It's just cosmetics.
    This is the webpage that counts :
    http://web.me.com/philipksmith/philipksmith/Blog/Blog.html
    The blue RSS button is the wrong one.
    !http://www.wyodor.net/_Discussions/WrongRSSButton.png!
    Why not enable personal domain and use your domainname properly.
    To use your domainname, follow the instructions in your MobileMe account where you setup Personal Domain:
    https://secure.me.com/account/
    Where you'll find a link to [iWeb: Using your own domain name|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1107]
    Or read it in the [MobileMe help|http://help.apple.com/mac/1/help> : Account > Setting up a Personal Domain
    You can have only one domainame with Personal Domain at MobileMe. To use the other one you have to enable URL forwarding where you host your domainname.

  • RSS feeds not working in Mail

    Hello Everyone,
    My RSS feeds stopped working on April 12th. Two of them have given me feeds today but nothing from yesterday or the day before or the day before that. Very strange. I've tried quitting Mail, restarting my computer, control clicking on the individual feeds and folders and clicking update all feeds and the specific feeds. Any other tips?
    Thank you very much!

    Not sure if this counts as 'fixing' the problem; but here's what I did:
    * Moved ~Library/Mail to someplace else (I picked my desktop)
    * Open mail.
    * Watch as .Mac pulls in the configuration that was synced to .Mac.
    * Wait to download new mail (IMAP headers)
    I did have to manually copy the mail rules .plist, but other than that, things seem to be working as I want them to.
    Somehow, RSS started working.

  • Need help with reading RSS feed from SSIS

    Hi all,
    I am trying to read RSS feed from SSIS by using the Script Component. So far I am able to read some information from the RSS feed from the following items included in the code, Title, PublishDate, LastUpdateTime, Id and Summary.
    There are still more item but I am unable to identify the proper data type for the following:
    //Output0Buffer.Description = item.Content;
    //Output0Buffer.Category = item.Categories;
    //Output0Buffer.Comments = item.Summary;
    //Output0Buffer.Source = item.SourceFeed;
    When I define the data for item.Content as Unicode String in the column properties for the Output column I get the following error message:
    Error 1 Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.ServiceModel.Syndication.SyndicationContent' to 'string'
    And the same error for the other three variables.
    I am using HTTP Connection manager to read the xml link.
    I tried to google around for some help but I could not find more information about the datatype.
    I appreciate any help if someone can point me to the right solution for reading RSS feed from SSIS.
    Code:

    base.PreExecute();
    // Get the URL from the Http Connection Manager.
    // Note, we're not actually using the connection manager's connection object,
    // just it's URL setting. This is because using the .NET connection classes
    // give us more flexibility.
    reader = XmlReader.Create(Connections.HttpConnection.ConnectionString);
    feed = SyndicationFeed.Load(reader);
    public override void PostExecute()
    base.PostExecute();
    reader.Close();
    public override void CreateNewOutputRows()
    if (feed != null)
    foreach (var item in feed.Items)
    Output0Buffer.AddRow();
    Output0Buffer.Title = item.Title.Text;
    Output0Buffer.PublishDate = item.PublishDate;
    Output0Buffer.LastUpdatedTime = item.LastUpdatedTime;
    Output0Buffer.Link = item.Id;

    //Output0Buffer.Category = item.Categories;
    //Output0Buffer.Comments = item.Summary;
    //Output0Buffer.Source = item.SourceFeed;
    Output0Buffer.FeedImage.AddBlobData(ConvertToBytes(item.Summary));
    string authorName = string.Empty;
    if (item.Authors.Count > 0)
    // take the first author
    authorName = item.Authors[0].Name;
    Output0Buffer.Author = authorName;
    Output0Buffer.SetEndOfRowset();
    private byte[] ConvertToBytes(TextSyndicationContent content)
    if (content != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(content.Text))
    // convert the string buffer to UTF8 so we can store it in an NTEXT column
    var encoding = new UTF8Encoding();
    return encoding.GetBytes(content.Text);
    return new byte[0];
    Thanks in return.

    You need to make it running outside SSIS 1st. I just do not see why you need to publish it here at the moment.
    And to solve it, doesn't C# has the
    VAR datatype so you do not have to guess.

  • RSS-feeds stopped working

    Hello.
    All of a sudden all RSS-feeds stopped loading. No RSS counts, Safari doesn't load anything when I click on one. I have tried resetting, removing the preference file, repairing permissions. Nothing seems to help.
    I could add that they work perfectly well on my wife's account and a restart didn't do any good either.
    I use 2.0.2 and have 152 feeds at the moment. Too many?
    Anyone know what to do?
    Rikard

    Hi rickb
    good work on what you've tried so far... I'd suggest cleaning or removing System caches - you might try this... http://www.northernsoftworks.com/snowleopardcachecleaner.html since I've seen it recommended here before.
    Failing that, although on paper it mightn't help in this case : try a Safe Boot - holding down the Shift key as your mac starts - then restart normally.

  • Can I find out how many people are subscribed to my RSS feed?

    Just curious - I don't want to know who they are, or spam them - I'm just wondering about a count.
    --drkenfp

    There is no way to do this with the default RSS feed URL and iTunes, unfortunately. If you really want to see stats on your subscribers and stuff, you will need to translate your RSS feed to something like FeedBurner and then advertise that URL instead of the iWeb RSS.
    Here is an example of my feed:
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/dirtdoog
    There are lots of stats available through FeedBurner... http://www.feedburner.com
