Rss feed validation

Suddenly, a rss that has worked for years is not working to update weekly podcasts. The feed validation site just confuses the **** out of me. Any help on validating an rss feed???

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it. (Edit: they've done that, but also removed the 'feed' URLs.)
Neither URL you posted is a feed, they are both web pages, so it's not surprising they are not validating.
Somehow you've managed to get two separate podcasts into the Store with the same title. This isn't suppored to be possible, so I don't know how you've managed it.

Episodes 503 and 504 in the feed do not show when subscribing because in both cases you've omitted the stop before the 'mp3':

As this means that the files have no extensions iTunes does not recognize them as being playable media and so does not display the episodes.

I don't know whether there are any other useful ones. FeedValidator is fine, but you can ignore anything to do with Atom, or complaints about 'RawVoice' which it doesn't understand, or 'errors' about the 'itunes:order' tag which is a recent addition it doesn't know about; and sometimes it complains about date formatting when there isn't a problem. On the other hand it won't flag errors such as trying to link to a Flash file, or setting an 'itunes:block' tag to 'yes' when you didn't mean to.
It frequently complains that the feed is being identified as UTF-8 but being served as text, and this doesn't seem to matter to iTunes.
The basic test is to subscribe manually to your feed (or from the 'Subscribe' button in the Store) - in most cases if it works properly there it's fine.

You can turn on extreme debugging as well. The problem is always with the publisher failing to follow specs; inform them to do so.

I've used Feedburner many times and never had such a problem. I am a bit confused, forgive me if I ask for questions already answerd. Have you tried updating the podcast in someone elses copy of iTunes? My guess is that the file is bad since it is working in other programs but not iTunes. I would try making a new .mp4 file and podcasting it and seeing if that works.

Error messages when submitting a validated RSS feed URL to iTS.

Why do I keep getting error messages when submitting a validated RSS feed URL to iTS. Feed is http://streaming.integrationworks.com:3000/archive/feed2.xml
I get variations on the follwoing message: "We had difficulty reading this feed. Bad http result code: 504"
I validated this file at http://www.feedvalidator.org/. I am able to manually place it in iTunes (Open Stream) and download episodes. I can paste the URL in my browser and retrieve an RSS feed page.
Any ideas?

You have to remember that when subscribing manually, it's only your iTunes application which is doing this - the Store is not involved at all. When submitting, the Store software checks the feed as a technical check before its assessed for content by humans; but how this is done and what sort of call is made to the server is another of Apple's dark secrets.
You're the third with a similar situation in the last couple of days, and I've seen this arise before: though the specific message about a proxy server is unique to you. (A proxy server would act as an intermediary - anyone accessing the feed would ask the proxy for it, and the proxy would retrieve it from the actual server and pass it back, masking the original server's URL in the process. Whether this is actually what is going on is obviously something only your server technicians can say - and then there's the question of what is different about a request from the iTunes Store.)
If all else fails you could place the feed on another server and try again - you could do this and leave the episode media files where they are, they don't have to be on the same server as the feed, as long as the server in question can handle 'byte-range requests' (which is a quite separate can of digital worms).

Problem with validating my RSS Feed

Been trying to submit my podcasts to iTunes but got a problem as it keeps coming up saying 'We had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed'.

Thanks for this. I'm new to this as when it was done before, someone else did it for me and I have no contact with them now.
Originally our interviews etc were uploaded to soundcloud and then I used Google Feedburner for RSS feed then submitted to iTunes the feedburner link and that was it - iTunes would automatically update.
But our station has now been told we must use Mixcloud for licensing and copyright reasons. So all I did was use an RSS feed converter for mixcloud as is is what was suggested. I then used this generated link on Feedburner then used feedburner link for iTunes - well I tried.
Hope the above makes sense. Was this correct thing to do? Or is it a mixcloud problem?
I'm not very technical so a lot of this talk in your response was foreign to me.

Need immediate help validating RSS Feed.

Hey guys, I recently purchased some webhosting and my own domain and everything in those regards are going great. However, after changing all the links in my RSS to reflect the new domain that i have uploaded my podcast episodes to, the RSS feed stopped working. I have tried many thing to get it validated by feedvalidator and i have had no luck. Can anyone please take a look at my RSS feed and tell me whats going on. Thanks in advance.

The closing '/guid' tag for your first episode has a space in it - </ guid> - it may be this which is currently rendering your feed unreadable.
iTunes is cuirrently looking for a feed at
http://www.djjohnnyblaze.com/The%20DJ%20Johnny%20Blaze%20Podcast/rss.xml
and not finding it. The '%20' codes are because there are spaces in the URL, which is not allowed. You are going to have to get a feed to that URL in order to move iTunes to your present feed, as well as correcting the above error.

Possibly your server is responding too slowly. In iTunes, from the 'Advanced' menu choose 'Subscribe to Podcast'. Enter your feed URL. See whether you can subscribe there, and whether there is an appreciable delay.

Feed Has No Episodes & Validation Issues with RSS Feed

Hello! I am beyond my wits end..having many issues getting this podcast submitted and never had such issues before. Any step-by-step help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Your feed has no media files referenced. Your web page has embedded audio players: these won't work in the feed. You need direct links to the media files, which should be mp3 or m4a, not rm, swf or wma. These links have to be contained in an 'enclosure' tag for each episode.

I'm not suggesting you should write your own feed, but the page will tell you what to look for in a feed.
You're using Wordpress: it's not really generating a podcast feed. You may need to add the PodPress plugin - I'm not sure whether you can get a podcast feed out of WordPress by itself - I'm afraid I can't advise on this.
You can ignore the FeedValidator comment - it's only because you have the 'item' tag at the end of a line, and this doesn't matter.

RSS Feed not validating "Undefined item element: itunes:order"

I've been trying to submit my RSS feed to iTunes but it won't validate. I hosted the podcast on Podomatic and used Feedburner to create the RSS feed. When I checked the link on FeedValidator it gives me the error Undefined item element: itunes:order. My feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/mscmngrlpodcast. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm kind of a novice so I appreciate your help.

Your feed is fine [ the 'itunes:order' tag was introduced recently and Feedburner doesn't recognize it. Subscribing to your feed manually in iTunes works OK.
However you may have a problem with the media file. The Feedproxy URL redirects to

Testing this for 'byte range requests' in Terminal suggests that the server does not accept this: it's the method iPhones use to download files, consisting of requesting part of the file at a time, rather than the whole thing, and as iPhones won't download properly if the server doesn't handle it Apple have made it mandatory. If the server indeede doesn't handle this your podcast will be rejected - you can try submitting and see what happens. If it's rejected you would need to find another server. If you are rejected and re-submit later you will have to change the title slightly, otherwise you will be told the feed has already been submitted (this is a bug in the process).

I need help getting my RSS feed compaitble with Itunes...Im almost there.

Can someone help me with my code for itunes. Unfortunately I use rapidweaver to podcast and I have read there are a few things Rapidweaver leaves out when publishing the site so itunes does not accept the feed. My RSS feed works and can be subscribed manually though Itunes or with software. Im thinking im using spaces or it looks like I need to number my tracks for my podcast(which sounds odd but, I know itunes is finicky with spaces, symbols etc)

It's better to post the URL of the feed (as you have subsequently done) than the contents of the feed .
From the FeedValidator report the feed is basically OK for iTunes. There are several occasions where 'content:encoded' sections (following immediately on 'guid' tags) should be enclosed in
<description>...</description>
tags: however all this will be ignored by iTunes anyway and only applies to other readers. The 'potentially dangerous content' referred to by FeedValidator is within the 'content:encoded' tags and so isn't relevant to iTunes. They are referring to an inline css style, and I don't know whether this might cause a problem elsewhere.
You should really have a language tag, e.g.
<language>en-us</language>
(you have a dc:language tag but that's for a different system). This should be placed in the top section, before the first 'item' tag.
It's advisable to have an 'itunes:explicit' tag for each 'item' -
<itunes:explicit>yes IF CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL, OTHERWISE no</itunes:explicit>
it's not compulsory if you have no adult material, but you must have a 'yes' if you do.
You can check your feed by subscribing in iTunes from the 'Advanced' menu - this has the same result as clicking the 'Subscribe' button on the Store page. If it works OK there you are ready to submit it.

Why is this RSS Feed not working?

Here is the code I used on the RSS Parser file. Yet when I
open the flash viewer no changes have been made from the original
example I pulled this from. Sorry, the code is listed twice. The
second version is when I used "attach code" and I can't seem to
delete the original cut & paste.
Mind you, I'm just getting through the latter stages of a
beginner Flash course, so if possible, please keep explanations
relatively understandable to a newbie. :)

You have failed to close the category tag, which renders the feed unreadable. You need to add a line as here:

I have read up, and am still having problems with RSS Feed

Greetings Everyone.
I really need some help with my RSS feed before I go insane. I would like to think I know what I am doing, but obviously there is some little (or big!) step I am overlooking.

Now, from everything I have read so far - it seems that as long as you get the URL right when you are publishing to a folder, iWeb should do the rest. Also, it is important to put the whole folder containing your podcast in your root web folder otherwise it breaks the feed. Both of these things I have done. (obviously not correctly, or it would be working!)
I read Many tutorials and topics I could find about this, but it still doesn't seem to work for me. Apple suggests taking the RSS feed an pasting it into itunes under Advanced menu "subscribe to podcast" to make sure your feed is valid before submitting to itunes.
When I do this, I get an message saying "there was a problem downloading... An unknown error occurred (-50).
I tried using a feed validator and it came back with so many errors. I just don't know that much about RSS, but i have been working on this for about a month and it's driving me crazy. No one I have asked at the apple store has been any more helpful than to suggest I just buy a .mac account and do it from there(honestly the nerve. wink.) I don't need .mac, I have my own website.

So, my web-host said that it's a problem with the RSS feed, not there hosting.
They pointed me to "Feed Validator" which I looked at before. I have a lot of errors.

Shouldn't Garageband and iWeb have taken care of these errors. I don't even know how I would correct them. I thought this was supposed to be a 1-2-3 process, like the documentation of both programs said.

IWeb09 RSS Feed Button not providing the correct URL

I use iWeb 3.0.1 and MobileMe to host my own domain. However, I want to add a Blog with RSS feed. When I insert the RSS Feed button it creates a link to http://www.<domain>/username>/Blog/rss.xml. This doesn't work in RSS readers since the path is not valid.
However, if I manually edit my RSS reader to point to http://web.me.com/<domain>/<username>/Blog/rss.xml it correctly finds the RSS XML file indicating that the Blog pages are being published correctly.
Is there a bug in iWeb or have I not configured something properly? I can't find a way to manually edit the RSS feed button.

Your domain uses URL forwarding with masking. It has no meaning for links. It's just cosmetics.

Why not enable personal domain and use your domainname properly.

You can have only one domainame with Personal Domain at MobileMe. To use the other one you have to enable URL forwarding where you host your domainname.

Need help generating an rss feed via jsp

this is ridiculous, but i cannot get my jsp to generate rss feed code. i am querying my database for stories, then displaying the various fields within the rss xml codes. the page either refuses to load altogether or displays the content as one run-on sentence (i.e., without the xml codes). i'd prefer most of all to have a nice xml-look-and-feel display to show up in my browser, but i can live without it as long as someone hitting the url of my page can get the rss feed to parse. however, the page generally just refuses to load anything.
if anyone has any input or suggestions, i'd greatly appreciate it. i've done countless searches here and web-wide with no results. i get lots of help on parsing (which is a cakewalk as far as i'm concerned compared to this stupid stupid display problem).

I will presume you are generating valid xml. What happens if you view source, save it as an xml file, and then try and open it? Is it valid?
Try this at the top of your page.
<%@ page contentType="text/xml" %>
That may help the browser understand that you are sending it xml.
I dunno - I had mixed results with my little experiment here - IE didn't even try to load it sometimes.
