RSS Leopard 10.5.3

I can't seem to add any new feeds to mail.
When I click on the feed the box appears in mail, I click on 'add', the spinning lines circle appears and it just sits there doing nothing.
Lame. Any ideas?

thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately no dice.

  • Anyone know any good books?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with any good admin type books that cover Leopard server . Though there is a lot of documentation from apple on their site, it seems kind of vague and doesn't always talk in specifics (eg. how to actually use Ical server rather than theoretically how it works).
Also these forums have been a great source of knowledge so thanks to everyone who takes part!
So does anyone have any recommendations or is there somewhere online where there is practical info?
    thanks
    Martin

I too am waiting for some good Leopard Server books, but just in case there are other people like me who haven't recently visited the Leopard Server documentation page:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
It appears that several of the pdfs have been updated (they end in 2ndEd.pdf) In particular, the iCal Service Administration pdf appears to have been updated around May 8th...
Also, there is now a very handy RSS feed that gives announcements for new and updated Leopard Server documentation:

  • Mail will not delete content of RSS feed in Snow Leopard OSX Mail Update

I have 2 RSS feeds that subscribe to in Safari and read in Mail. When I delete a link in the feed in Mail and they go to the Trash - all of the links reappear when I relaunch Mail ... the same link reappears in the RSS feed. I have deleted the links, quit Mail, re-subscribed to the RSS feed in Safari - but it still happens. It is as if you can never delete the links in the RSS feed. Did not have this problem prior to updating to Snow Leopard. Anyone know whey that is? Or is the RSS feature in Safari just poorly designed and inadequate?

That said, anyone know how to copy/export the RSS feed addresses from within Apple Mail?

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.1 & RSS Feeds

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, every RSS feed I delete returns after emptying the trash. Does it make more sense for me to disable the feature until this is fixed? Or does anyone know of a fix? I haven't found one thus far.
    Any comments are greatly appreciated.

This is a known bug in Snow Leopard. Apple hasn't announced a fix thus far. There is a (very long) thread here on the same subject. We are all just waiting at this point...

  • RSS feed from Snow Leopard server

I want to host an RSS feed from my server. What settings would be necessary to accomplish this?

The first things to do would be to download a program that will maintain your RSS feed.  Podcast spitter from the app store was the top hit when I did a search.  I've not used it, but it appears that it'll do the trick.
Next, just create a website using the web service in Snow Leopard Server.
Point Podcast Spitter at the share that hosts your web site and that should do the trick.
When you upload your RSS feed, all the stuff needed to make it an RSS feed should go with it.
Granted it's a VERY thinned out version of the steps needed to take, but the concepts are correct.
If you need a more detailed description, write back with more info about how your server is set up and how it's connected to the internet.

  • Daily Tips RSS feed for Snow Leopard?

Someone recently told me that there's a Daily Tips feed for Snow Leopard with general helpful hints to get the most out of it. I've been in a search frenzy, but there's a lot in the lists here and almost nothing when you type in "Tips" in the search field, and none that obviously indicate that they might be that sort of feed in the RSS feeds lists. I'm not having problems, just like to have little prods in my education as I learn the OS. I'd always been a fan of MacWorld and MacUser magazines tips scattered throughout their pages before they went beyond just the computers into everything else. Miss that because I learned SO much from them.

  • MobileMe and RSS screen saver missing in Snow Leopard!

In Leopard, in Desktop & Screen Saver, under Pictures, There is a screen saver called MobileMe and RSS, which allowed you to subscribe to picture RSS feeds and would display them as a slideshow when the screen saver activated.
I found that screen saver option is no longer available in Snow Leopard. I thought I would just go to a Leopard machine and copy the screen saver file to Snow Leopard, but its not in the screen saver folder (Drive -> System -> Library -> Screen Savers).
Why did apple remove this functionality? Is there anyway to get it back?

Sorry, I get it now. My issue was similar but not the same as yours. I have never subscribed to picture-only RSS feeds so I guess I can't address your issue. As I said, I was trying to have other peoples' MM galleries show up in the list of screen savers, which I was finally able to do using my instructions (you don't need to belong to MobileMe to do this by the way, all you need is the username of a friend who does subscribe and has set up a MM gallery - for example, my username is "rbarline" in case you want to check out my "public slide show" gallery as a screen saver ... :~)
Now I am curious about picture-only RSS feeds and would like to try one as a screen saver. Can you send me a feed URL to try? Maybe there is a way after all?

  • Mail App and RSS and Snow Leopard

How do I add an RSS feed to my Snow Leopard Mail app?

I have done that and it does not seem to work. I have even replicated this on another MacBook with Snow Leopard. I don't think this is a problem with the ASA because it was working fine before. I think there is something wrong with Snow Leopard since I have tried multiple VPN clients and even the built in SL Cisco VPN client.

  • RSS Feed Errors in Safari 3.0.4 running OS X Leopard

Hello. I recently upgraded to LEOPARD. Since my upgrade, I am unable to access any of my RSS feeds in Safari (nor can I subcribe to new ones). The error message I receive is: -- Safari can’t open the page “feed://www.apple.com/main/rss/hotnews/hotnews.rss”. The error was: “Operation could not be completed. (PubSub error 203.)” (PubSub:203) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message. -- Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

OK, i finally seem to have solved my problem as well, though, amazingly, not in the permissions-changing manner described right above here...which i, of course, spent about 15-20 minutes trying to no avail.
what i did, and which is ridiculously backwards and old-fashioned, was to
    1. make a new admin user in system preferences/accounts,
    2. log this new temporary admin user in,
    3. load up safari,
    4. load up an RSS feed, which -- a welcome sight, indeed -- actually loaded and appeared as it used to, long ago...
    5. quit safari
    6. go to the new user's library/pubsub folder, and make a ZIP/compressed archive of that, and place it in a location where i could get it from my own account,
    7. log out the new user
    8. log myself back in
    9. delete my (troublesome) pubsub folder from my library, and replace it with the uncompressed one i had just created via the temporary admin user
    10. restarted. this is important, cos it's what finally worked.

  • RSS problem after snow leopard upgrade

I just upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 and my rss feeds get a "Safari can't open page" with this error message: “The operation couldn’t be completed. (PubSub error 203.)” (PubSub:203). How do I fix this?

I suggest you try the solution described here:

  • RSS + Safari = Super Slowdown Of Snow leopard

Ok, This actually is towards both Safari & Mail and using them to read RSS feeds.
I try to keep my system all in tuned, in the sense of, using what is available through the system first then, as a last resort, going to a third party for something.
    Keeping it simple, you know?
I currently use Newsfire for my RSS feeds and wanted to use Safari or Mail to read my feeds instead.
Problem is, When I had put them to Mail, it slowed my system down to a crawl and having them in Safari, you have to make a folder and have them as bookmarks ( this just makes no sense ) but I noticed a big drop in Safari when I did this.
Is there something I can tweak? Could it be from having 2 RSS readers or is this just a fault of Apples'?
    Thank you : )

    Carolyn Samit wrote:
RSS feeds through mail or Safari but when I tried to, it causes my system to lag, big time.
If the news feeds are coming from a third party app, that could be what's causing the slow down. Perhaps not compatible with the Mail app.
    Carolyn
    *Scratching head*
lol Of course they aren't coming from a third party app, that would be kind of redundant I would think?
I'm copying or simply clicking the RSS button when I see it in Safari.
In mail I was copying and pasting them into Mail ( Don't know why Apple didn't make this part easier, eh )
If it seems that "It is what it is", then I'll leave it there and appreciate your help.
Just wanted to see how "minimal" I could keep things is all : )

  • RSS feeds in Leopard Mail no longer work

Had been working fine until about a week ago, then they stopped being updated. Clicking on the error icon in Mail says the problem is "There was an error updating the RSS feeds. Mail cannot start a session with the system-wide RSS service. No RSS feeds will be refreshed."
I hadn't changed anything in Mail- didn't find anything in the discussions about this. I'd sent the error to Apple about a week ago- haven't heard/
    Thanks!

I cannot figure out why either, but this seemed to start two days ago. No updates that I know of, except one for Mac for Office (which obviously should not affect anything else). None of the links in my incoming email are working. Caused a work problem this morning when I could not access an online conference I needed to attend. Could not open the link in their email to get in!
Also, I have had intermittent "sending" issues where my messages seem to "hang" and give me an error message about the server.
I have used Mac Mail for years, same network, etc. and have never had any issues...now two issues seem to have cropped up at once! I'll try the restart again, as suggested. Does Apple know about this?

  • MacBook pro, snow leopard, iPhone and Bluetooth PAN problems

    Short Version:
I am having connectivity issues connecting my new MacBook Pro (MBP) to the Internet thru a Bluetooth PAN on my iPhone4. This has been working fine for a few days and then today it just stopped working responding that my iphone connection is not available, it's off, too far away or whatever. This is not the case. When I try to connect the iPhone to the MBP the iPhone is saying my MBP is not supported. I can pair the devices, but as soon as I try to connect to the Internet thru the iPhone via the MBP the connection fails.
    Long Version:
I received a shiny new MacBook Pro only a few days ago and I am having Bluetooth Paired networking issues as of today, 2nd, March, 2011. The MacBook Pro is running Snow Leopard 10.6.4, and is brand spanking new, unmodified, factory defaults.
The iPhone(s) I am using are iPhone 4's with iOS 4.1
On the first day I paired the MBP with both iPhones with ease, it was so easy my grandparents could have done it. So point and click and it just worked....
The iPhones are set up in iTunes with names similar to dave1 and dave2
On the MBP I can select which device I want to connect to the Internet by going to the Bluetooth icon and connecting to whichever iPhone I have handy at the time. Since the plans are limited connectivity, I do load share between the two.
Today, for no apparent reason, I have been unable to connect to my wife's phone just getting a basic "The Bluetooth network is unavailable" message telling me the iphone is out of range, not on, etc etc etc. Not true.
No problem, I just connected to my phone instead. Occasionally I tried her phone again, but it just never worked. I eventually got her to reboot it, still no joy.
Then, a couple of hours ago, while in the middle of reading my rss feeds, my Bluetooth connection dropped out. My phone is sitting right next to the MBP. So that's not the issue. No amount of reboots of either the MBP or the iPhone have fixed this. I have unpaired and repaired the devices (on both phones) countless times. I have removed the sim card and rebooted, I have disabled and reenabled Bluetooth on both, rebooting before doing this, and after and during, I have reset network settings. Nothing I try is working here.
Pairing alone is an event, but here's an example of what's happening:
I go thru the motions, the MBP shows me a number (eg, 451234) and the number is displayed on the iPhone. They see each other. The numbers are the same. Good. I click PAIR on the iPhone and MBP and everything appears good. But then if I go to connect to the iphone on the MBP I get the out of range error.
I have made both discoverable, and tried to connect to the MBP from the iphone, and got a different error message altogether: Connection Unsuccessful - "{insert my name}'s MacBook Pro" is not supported. W-T-F? It was an hour ago? What has changed?
Then, the only option on the iPhone is to "Forget Device". ok, forget it, and start again. Same same.
Neither the iPhones nor the MBP have been upgraded or changed in anyway today, or even recently. In fact, as mentioned earlier, I was actively using the connection without any issues for a number of hours when it just stopped for no apparent reason.
Not that these matter, but I am in Thailand (live here for the time being), I'm on the TrueMove network, which offers 3G coverage in my area (Patong Beach).
This could easily have been filed under MacBook Pro, iPhone, OSX and possibly many other discussion headings, because the issue can be any or all of the OS, the MacBook Pro Bluetooth adapter, the iPhone Bluetooth, (iOS for that matter), or some other unforeseen conditions...
My head is sore from pulling my hair out. I am open to any suggestions (reasonable or otherwise!)
For further info (not that this post is long enough already, or anything, but), I thought it was interesting that the phones didn't fail at the same time, so I pulled out an old iPhone 3GS and set it up, but after pairing, the two can still not connect.
I know its not an issue with the data plan on the iPhone since I'm here surfing now without an issue, so it's not a data problem.
    Open to ideas....
If you've read this far and you're ever in Phuket, give me a call... I'll shout you a beer

Ok, now I do wish I could edit....
I forgot to APPLY the network settings for the USB cable to work. Connected thru USB I can tether.
So, I kept playing, and playing some more...
I had previously unpaired everything, and gone as far as removing network devices HOWEVER...
I didn't remove the Ethernet, Firewire or Airport Network devices.
Now, I have done so. I REMOVED EVERYTHING
    No pairing, no network devices.
Bluetooth was already turned off, and I rebooted.
I turned off tethering and rebooted the iphone.
I turned on bluetooth (on the MBP), I turned on tethering. I browsed for the iphone. It said I was already paired???? Ok, repair AGAIN, and THE IPHONE SHOWED MY BLUETOOTH TETHERING BLUE BAR at the top of the screen!
I opened a web page, no go... d4mn, I was close...
Opened network preferences and the created a new bluetooth PAN and voila! Internet back on the MBP. I am about to reinstall the ethernet and airport (I can live without firewire for now) and see what happens.
Basically, the link I posted two posts ago, I had already done that, but I NEEDED to remove ethernet, firewire and airport as well...
So MAYBE it's fixed, we'll see for how long. I'm not going to mark this as answered for now, because basically, it has failed for no reason, and I want to know why...
Hopefully someone can come up with something, but having to delete and reinstall all pairings and network devices (to me) is not really a solution, it's a workaround (at best).

  • Is there a way to get out of using RSS in mail.app and go back to Safari?

    Hello,
I am a big RSS user and have a pretty huge and unwieldy subscription list. When Leopard shipped, I started using mail.app to read my RSS. I went so far as to delete all of my subscriptions from Safari and rely entirely on mail.app.
As some of you may have noticed from other threads in this forum, RSS in mail.app seems to be not ready for primetime. Specifically, if I leave mail.app open for more than about an hour, the RSS feeds stop updating entirely or update sporadically. It is at this time when I will also invariably find a Database.sqlite3 file in my trash can (which prevents the trash can from being emptied, too).
If I restart mail.app, the feeds start updating again BUT INCLUDE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OLD ITEMS. This happens every time I restart mail.app now. I have read all of the other threads that suggest that perhaps dot mac bookmark synching is to blame. This cannot be in my case since I have it all turned off and am not a dot mac member. I have no plugins installed in mail.app or safari.
I have come to the conclusion that RSS in mail.app is too buggy and unreliable to be used and I would like to go back to Safari. The trouble is that when Leopard shipped, the idea of RSS in mail.app made perfect sense to me and I got so enthusiastic and "there's no going back" that I deleted my enormous amount of RSS subscriptions in Safari. Is there anyway to export my RSS subscriptions from mail.app so that I can import them into Safari? I REALLY don't want to try and add them again one by one.

here is a link to macosxhints.com that tells you how to output all of your feed URLs to a terminal window. from there you can cut and paste them into your new feed reader of choice...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080319094830396
and if you are in the marked for a new reader may i suggest David Watanabe's excellent NewsFire. he had just recently made it totally free as a gift to the macintosh community.
    best of luck.

  • How can I get my RSS feeds to show up on my iOS devices from iCloud?

How can I get my RSS feeds to show up on my iOS devices from iCloud?  The RSS feeds now show up just fine on my iMac.
On my iMac the appear in a category at the same level as In Box, Sent, etc.  However the term RSS is in lighter grey like Mailboxes, On My Mac, Reminders.  I use Snow Leopard 10.7.5.  Any help will be appreciated as I'd like to read the feeds on my iPad 2 and iPhone 5 when I'm away from home.
    Thank you.

This is helpful, but how do you get both devices to communicate to this single calendar via the iCloud?...
You did not mention that it must be through iCloud.  But then, it can't really do so if you want to maintain separate Apple IDs.
So you just set up an additional calendar on your devices.
iPads, iPhone, Macs can show multiple calendars simultaneously.  I have my work calendar and several personal calendars all showing simultaneously on my iPad, Mac Mini and Macbook Pro.   In the case of my client, they didn't need multiple calendars.  They just were going to use the one shared calendar.  But I did setup the shared Google calendar and separate personal caldendars on their iPhones.  (e.g.: Husband's iPhone = husband's personal Mac Cal + shared Google Calendar.  Wife's iPhone = wife's personal Outlook for Windows Cal + shared Google Calendar.)
