RSS - Safari won't update unread count as articles are read
When I installed 10.5 yesterday a lot of old RSS articles showed as unread. After selecting each feed the unread counts were properly updated. Today a new article appeared in one feed, however no matter how many times I read that article it still shows as unread.
While this seems to be more of a work-around than a solution, try this and see if it works for you, it clears it up for me when I run into this issue.
Close Safari.
Navigate to YourUsernameHere/Library/PubSub ( denoted as ~/Library/PubSub)
Copy the Feeds folder to your desktop [option-drag] (just making a backup here for good computing practice), then throw the contents of the Feeds folder in the trash.
Empty the trash and restart Safari and see if your counts are right.
Like I said, you may have to go back and do this occasionally, but at least it works for a while.
Hope this helps.

Safari won’t update fromVersion 5.0.5 to5.1.7
I'm having the same issue. Tonight I did a clean install of 10.6.0 from the retail CD onto an old 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini. So far I have done nothing with it but run Software Update and reboot repeatedly, and now Software Update tells me I'm all up-to-date (I'm now on 10.6.8) but I still have Safari 5.0.5. (In /Applications/.) All of my other 10.6.8 Macs are on 5.1.x, including my white Core Duo MacBook.

I recently updated my blog but the rss widget won't update with the new entry, I've waited a full day. The rss feed address is: http://www.berrylibrary.com/Blog/rss.xml
Apple Mail, Google Reader, etc. all get the update but the iWeb RSS Widget refuses. I also took the widget out and put it back with no success. Here is my trick to get my rss feed fixed:
Make a change in the Inspector that only affects the blog (but all entries), like disabling comments and right away enabling them again in the rss window of the Inspector (I don't know for sure but this could erase your existing comments); that will return the images in the right places or put them back if they disappeared altogether. This will also clean up the rss feed.
Disabling comments crashes iWeb, so it is important to enable it immediately after having disabled it, so you click in fact twice in the check box, off and on again.
But you will have to do this each time you add a post to your blog, or to any of your blogs, because it seems a change in one blog or site may have a damaging effect on an other blog. -
Messages won't display unread count
Since the last update the unread count on the icon will not display. Anyone have any ideas? It's turned on in the notifications centre.
Hi,
That does seem odd.
I mentioned the Containers things as this is the Read and Write route that the app uses (normally to the aliases in the /Data/Library/Preferences that pints to ~/library/Preferences)
I also looked in those places but for IDS, SOAgent and IMAgent that are also involved but no luck.
On your Console Location for the Var Stuff I have this
See Path Bar across bottom. This pic of Dec 1st I had to open in Preview.
A Different view if it helps
I am not sure what to suggest at this point.

Safari won't update to 1.3.1
I know that I have an old mac, i've just inherited it from a family member and i'm trying to learn my way around it before I think about whether I want to get a newer one. I know Windows pretty much inside out, but Mac OS is still a mystery to me.
When I received it, Safari claimed to be v1.2(125), even though the OS wax updated to 10.3.9. I have seen mention of this online, but no solutions that seem to apply to me. I have used Pacifist to update back to 1.3 (by simply dragging Safari from the update package to my applications folder), but it still won't let me update to 1.3.1.
I have repaired permissions and rebooted since moving to 1.3, but still no luck.
My main problem is that Safari crashes every time I try to do a google search (from the top right box or from the google page). The crash report I get is below, can anyone tell me what the problem is?

You said you updated your OS to 10.3.9 - from what?
Your crash report makes heavy mention of Javascript (not to be confused with Java) and this could be the cause of the problems with Google.
Let's face it - you have a hugely outdated operating system on an obsolete computer. Don't expect it to be able to do everything on today's internet! -
Iphone 3g 2.2 mail (mobileme) not updating unread count
hello. i have an iphone and recently updated to 2.2 (not sure if this has anything to do with it) and have a mobileme account.
push works fine, and if i mark a message as read on the iphone (i.e. read it), it updates the mobileme web interface OK. but if i change the unread status on the web interface it doesn't update the iphone mail count.
the only way to update it is to keep opening and running the mail app - which seems pointless. I have set up to fetch every 15 mins and yet even after waiting an hour it still doesn't update the count to match the web interface!
I am obviously doing something wrong, can anyone help me please?I've found deleting and reinstalling the account in Mail.app and on the iPhone helps. Now when I read on the iPhone it updates very quickly on the desktop. But when I read on the desktop it doesn't update quickly on the iPhone. But it will if I launch the mobilemail.app.
Previously no amount of launching would help update the unread count on either application. So, I've gotten over half-way there. -
After Lion reinstall, Safari won't update
I have a MacBook Pro that's been having some slowdown problems. It's running 10.7.4. So I booted it using cmd-R, then reinstalled Lion. Everything went smoothly.
Upon reboot, I discovered that Safari won't launch -- it crashes on launch, every time. I checked its version number: 5.1.6. I tried to use Software Update to update it, but Software Update found a few other updates but didn't realize Safari needed the update to the current version (6.0).
As a test, I did the exact same thing on my Mac Mini (also running 10.7.4), and the exact same thing happened.
There doesn't appear to be any place on the Apple site to manually download 6.0. How do I fix this on both computers? Safari is totally borked.I reported this in Apple's bug reporter, and was notified that this is a duplicate bug, i.e. it's a known issue. No word on when it will be fixed, but at least they are aware of it.
I was able to partially work around it by getting a copy of Safari 6 from another computer, and moving it over to my problem computers. The moved copy of Safari *mostly* works but has a couple of quirks (specifically with Flash).
Unfortunately I'm forced to move to Chrome until this is resolved (and who knows if I'll ever come back, hehe ) -
Conky new_mails not updating when local mail messages are read
Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I'm new.
I recently installed Arch Linux on my eeePC 1005HA laptop with dwm, conky, and postfix (I followed the wiki to install postfix to send local mail). I'm using xsetroot to replace the "dwm-5.2" text in the upper right corner with conky-provided information about time, CPU usage, etc., and want to use it to see how many unread local mail messages are in my /var/mail/spool/USER spool. Using ${new_mails} seems to be the way to go, but the value reported by ${new_mails} only ever increases when a message is sent to the spool, never decreasing when new messages are read or deleted until conky is restarted. I'm only using the "mail" program to send and receive mail to the local spool for system notifications like "your battery is low, save things now".
I've seen other users use ${new_mails} apparently fine, but googling for this problem shows other people having a similar problem. However, I haven't found any forum, wiki, or article about how to fix this without using messy workarounds, and the conky IRC channel didn't know how to fix this, though they've heard of similar problems with mutt. Any ideas?Bump! I've tried reinstalling conky and postfix/mail, and not much seems to work. Is conky passé now in favor of something else?

My Safari won't update, Software Update says there's nothing to update but gmail does
According to my Mac all my applications are up to date. But when I go check my gmail it says safari is out of date and needs to be update, however my mac says that there is nothing to update. I have an older MacBook and I am not sure if that is the issue. I have "Mac OS X Version 10.6.8", its a MacBook, white body version. Any suggestions? It is not a big issue, Safari works for everything else except my gmail account now, but Mozilla works fine with it
You need to upgrade the computer's OS or switch browsers; if desired, you can keep using Gmail as is, but many of its functions will eventually disappear.

Safari won't correctly display a Wordpress article
Strange problem. Wordpress article displays correctly in Firefox, Opera, Camino and Flock. Mangled in Safari.
The article contains three embedded mp4 movies. But an earlier post, which contained one embedded movie using exactly the same code, displays perfectly in Safari.
Am using Wordpress but not yet upgraded to v2, the theme is Tarski 1.2.3
If any kind person has a moment, please check out

This is the archive page of the post which will soon be off the top of the front page.
I've checked and rechecked the code and can find nothing to explain this.
Any help welcome.
Intel-Pro powerbook 17" Mac OS X (10.4.9)Well in the end I resolved this for myself. It was one variety of the various methods for using the <embed>video content</embed> tags. It worked for all the other browsers but not for Safari.
Safari also, as remarked by many here, does not display certain icons in Wordpress - and I actually had the same experience using Movable Type with Safari. In fact I would like to ask, what is it that Safari actually does better than these other browsers, because I am damned if I can think of anything. -
Groupwise client is reporting 1 unread email when all are read
Hi Folks,
I have a rather strange problem that I'm hoping to find a solution to. I
have one user who's client is reporting that there is an unread email in
her inbox when all have been read. In fact, she has either deleted or
moved all mail out of her inbox to either a cabinet directory or an
archive. I had her log in at another workstation and the issue followed
her. I have run both an analyze/fix with all the options checked, and a
structural rebuild on her user database, and found no problems.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
KrisDo an "Advanced Find" with filter options "Item Status" "does not include"
"Read".
Now you should see any unread Item. If it's only one Item, it must be this
one you see in the Home View. Just delete it or move it to another Folder.

Safari does not display GMail/Google Reader unread counts in tab titles
To reproduce this, do the following:
1. Create a bookmark for either GMail or Google Reader
2. Click on the bookmark under Safari to load either site (make sure it has at least on unread item)
The text in the tab title will not display the unread count. Instead, it displays either "GMail" or "Google Reader". Firefox displays the unread counts for both sites in the tab's title text as follows: "Gmail - Inbox(2) - <email addr>", "Google Reader (2)".
This is the one of the main reasons why I will continue to use Firefox over Safari. Displaying the unread counts in the tab titles allows me quickly glance at the browser's window with both sites loaded in separate tabs to see if there are any unread items.I had the same problem and was able to find a workaround. The key insight actually came from another one of your (jkwuc89) posts where you mentioned:
Loading GMail or Google Reader from a Safari bookmark appears to behave differently when compared to loading either site from a link on another page.
The solution is to change the address of your bookmark so that it is similar to loading the site from a link on another page. When you bookmark Gmail, it's address will read:
https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox
However, edit the address of this bookmark to:
javascript:window.location='https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox'
This Javascript snippet will trick Safari to open Gmail as if you had clicked a link on another page and the tab will display the correct page title including unread count. You can follow a similar pattern with Google Reader or other sites that exhibit a similar problem. -
