RSTP question...

With RSTP, my slide says that its portfast (among other things) is building into RSTP.  I dont understand that statement, shouldnt we still have to use the spanning-tree portfast for the sw to know if its an edge port or not?
Thank you

  • SRW2008 failure in RSTP mode

We've been integrating and verifying some RSTP-capable hardware and have discovered what appears to be a minor bug in the SRW2008 RSTP protocol implementation. We've discovered that the SRW2008 switch fails to become the root bridge in spite of having a lower MAC address. In our testbench, we have an SRW2008 and another OEM's Ethernet module with RSTP (call it the equipment under test). The SRW2008 has a lower MAC address than the EUT and both devices have the default priority setting of 32768; yet the EUT becomes root bridge. Changing the RSTP priority from the defaults (by increasing the numerical value on the EUT or decreasing the value on the SRW2008) will result in the SRW2008 becoming the root bridge. The OEM hardware manufacturer has verified that it is a SRW2008 problem; while they didn't have any SRW2008 switches available, they simulated one by assigning the SRW2008's MAC address to a representative switch. In their set up, their simulated SRW2008 assumed the role of root bridge (without any change to the priority settings) over the same EUT hardware we're using in our lab. This demonstrates the problem is a failure of the real SRW2008 hardware and not the EUT.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior in the SRW2008? I do have the latest firmware v1.0.4 installed.
I realize that this is a discontinued product from the Linksys line.

No serious, if you are not facing spanning-tree issues (like reconvergence) with that until now don't shake the box :)

  • Rapid Spanning Tree Question

    All,
I have a question about Rapid Spanning Tree reconfiguration. I have to following situation:
As you can see 3 switches with RSTP, and 2 switches without RSTP (or any other spanning tree, just unmanaged).
The 2 switch will form a loop in my network. Switch 1 will block one of the ports and the other port will forward the traffic.
If I break the link "Just Forwarding", my second switch won't be able to cumminucate for around 40 seconds. It will take some time before the backup link will be up again.
Cisco has the Fastforwarding  mechanism. Will this help in this situation? I would like to shorten the 40 seconds time.
    Thans in advance.

I'd guess the unmanaged devices run legacy spanning tree, and rapid
pvst switches will run rapid according the "heard" protocol. So if it hears
the legacy bpdu, it will run regular spanning tree, hence the 40 second delay.

    1. The "500" and "48" parts of "500.51, .48.50" appear to be VLAN numbers on your device.

  • [RSTP] Modifying Timers to avoid link flap related issues?

    Hi All + ftallet :-)
    Assume the following scenario;
There are two links between two switches. The primary link fails, RSTP cuts over to the secondary link. Now, the primary comes up for 10 seconds, and goes down again.
    Question:
    1. Is there a feature that can overcome this problem? E.g. adjust some timer to say 60 seconds, such that the primary link has to be working for 60 seconds before reverting to it.
    2. Better still is there a feature that sends 'hello' style packets to check if a link is up for 60 seconds before reverting to the primary link? (like tracking in a 1800 series router )
I really only need to know if such features exist, and if they do, what are they called so I can search for it and read about it.
    Cheers
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
I don't know of any such protocol. It would not be so complex to implement something that plays around with the STP cost of an interface based on its recent history though...
STP's memory does not go beyond max age. Uplinkfast is able to prevent an uplink that went down from becoming active immediately for some few additional seconds, but there nothing configurable there.
Finally, there is a solution called "flexlink", that basically keeps an interface blocked as a backup for a primary. If the primary fails, the backup interface goes forwarding. If the old primary comes back up, it becomes a backup interface...
That's all I can think of, which is not much you see;-)

  • RSTP timers

    Hi,
I have few basic questions with RSTP..
    1) What are the max age and Forward timers used in RSTP..?
    2) Are they used in pure RSTP domain or only in the case of Shared links and interop with traditional STP?
    3) Does the port forward user data during the learning state of RSTP?  If NO, then how does it converge in sub second?
Please respond even if you are able to answer only some of them..
    Thanks

    1. not used, RSTP doesn't have to rely on the timer values of STP ( forward delay and max age).
    2. only in the case of  interop with traditional STP
    3. keep learning state if not configured portfast for user data when connection failure

  • RSTP operating mode

    Hi all
I've one question about rstp operation mode and could you answer me
We have a lot of equipment  and we have stp in our LAN,it is more than 20 cisco switch, my question is if in this network every devices work in rstp mode but one a couple of from them work in stp mode, Do all of them switch work in stp mode or there are rstp and stp same time?

    Hi,
They will be in rstp and stp mode, but both protocols are compatible with each other.

  • STP and RSTP Convergence

    Hi
I'm studying for the ICND exam and have a basic question for some one. After STP/RSTP has converged what ports recieve BPDU. Is it all ports on all switches that are part of the active topology or just the trunk ports. If there is a hub connected to the topology do all hub ports recieve the BPDU?
I wish I had a diagram to make my question clearer.
    I would appreciate any advice.
    Gavin

All ports forward\recieve BPDUs. If you use a network monitor\capture program such as Etherreal you can view the BPDUs that are recieved on your port. BPDUs are sent\recieved on active and STP disabled ports, the disabled ports just don't act as a forwarding port for normal traffic. This is so that spanning-tree can keep an accurate loop free topology.
    Hope that helps

  • Mstp question

    Hello,
I have looked around on the internet for an answer to no avail.
I just need some clarification on the below - for the sake of this question I am managing the customer switches I am referring to below.
    1. Lets say I have 2 switches, swA and swB - they are both configured with MST and in the same region (Region 1). I now connect a customer (SwitchX) switch to both swA & swB. I configure the customer switch to use MST and be part of my region also (Region 1). lets say he is only using vlans 10,20,30
         - For this particular connection can I configure the trunk interfaces to the customer to only allow vlans 10,20,30 and map vlans 10,20,30 to MST instance 1 on all 3 switches? I believe this should work  - The trunk between swA & swB is allowing all vlans.
    2. Now lets say I have another customer who also connects his switch (SwitchY) to my switch (swA & swB) If I configure him in the same fashion as the first customer, part of MST Region 1. Lets say he is using vlans 100,110,120. Is it possible to only trunk vlans 100,110,120 across the uplinks to his switch and map the vlans to MST instance 2 on all 3 switches?
    3. It is my understanding that for every instance within a MST region the vlans have to match on every interface, either by allowing all, or statically pruning each interface to the exact same vlan allow list for each MST instance? I can't find any hard evidence??
The connection between my switches (swA & swB) is a trunk allowing ALL vlans, however MST instance 1 has vlans 10,20,30 and instance 2 has 100,110,120 mapped. Is this accpetable?
AFAIK each instance within a MST region has to have the same vlans mapped across all ports, you should not prune vlans on specific ports or there will be inconsistencies in each MST instance.
    Thanks in advance

The VLANs allowed on a link does not have to map with the instance to VLAN mapping for the configuration to go through. However, as you noted if you prune VLANs manually you can end up blackholing traffic since MST acts by forwarding for each instance, it does not care which VLANs are created on the switch or are allowed on trunks. So it's dangerous to do manual pruning when running MST.
You need to allow the native VLAN on the trunk so that MST can send untagged BPDUs, by default this is VLAN1 and if you plan to connect to other STP domains such as regular RSTP it might be best to leave it at that.
Like you said you could put customers in different instances and create custom topologies that way but the customer must have the same instance to VLAN mapping or run multi region. Also be careful so that you don't blackhole traffic.
Did you ever try the configuration out?

  • RSTP expertise/suggestions required

I am new in Cisco...RSTP is a global function and it can't run on specific port, right or wrong...? So it means when I run "spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst" command then it enables RSTP on all 24 ports but will it also enable RSTP on Gigabit/uplink ports?
Secondly, can any one tell me the command to disable RSTP on any port?
Here, I want to discuss my Network topology on which I will run RSTP...I have Six 2955T-12 Industrial Grade Switches. Two of them are Core Switches (using Two switches to provide redundancy in case of one Switch failure) and Four Switches are Access Switches for LAN1 and LAN2 (Again for LAN1 we using two switches for redundancy and same for LAN2). We will connect all Switches to each other with their Uplink Gigabit ports.
One more important thing is that both LAN's Computers (i.e. LAN1 and LAN2) have Dual LAN cards so that they will be connected with their both access Two Switches with Two LAN cards (we using Two LAN cards in Computers b/c of redundancy) e command to disable RSTP on any port
Now can anyone tell me configuration of RSTP ...?
Also I want to know that how we can run/enable RSTP on ONLY Uplink Gigabit ports?
Lastly, can I create Two or three VLANs in Catalyst 2955T-12 Switches but all VLANs should be Up?
    Regards,
    Shahid

    Hello Shahid,
    partial answer for your questions:
You can create up to 250 vlans on your CAT 2955T-12, but I believe you are actually asking about SVI (interface vlans) am I correct?
Layer 2-only switches only allows for 1 active interface vlan where you can assign 1 IP.
Why do you need to enable RSTP only on the uplinks? if its for compatibility issues. You should check the following link, as RSTP can work together with other STP modes with no problems:

  • PVST+ and RSTP

    Hi All,
I am carrying a project where I and migrating lan for one of my customer using 3COM to Cisco. They are using 3Com 7700 as L3 and 4400 as L2 switch which all gets uplink to 7700.I have enabled PVST+ on my cisco 4506 and CST on 4400 amd its working as expected ( in lab env). Today I have enabled RSTP on 3COM 4400 (which is default) and I could see that my root bridge 4506 is still communicating with all the 3COM 4400 switches and working fine.
Question I have: Is PVST+ backward compatible with RSTP.
    regards,
    -amit singh

    Hi Amit,
The answer to your question implies a combinaison of the two following requirements:
-1-the interaction of PVST (whether it is rapid pvst or not) and a pure IEEE bridge, only running one instance of the spanning tree - I guess that's what the 3com is, I have no experience of this device.
-2-the interaction between RSTP and STP.
-1- can be discussed. Cisco has always been running PVST+, and it seems that it is working correctly with most third party devices. There are some configurations that are not possible though, because we are running an IEEE STP on vlan 1 only (the root bridge for the other vlans are necessarily on a Cisco device for example). Anyway, I guess that if PVST was working with STP, then there should be no issue (again, my ignorance of the 3com is a problem, I guess this CST is STP)
-2-If RSTP on this 3com is the Rapid Spanning Tree of the IEEE, then yes, it is able to fall back in STP mode and interact with Cisco's PVST (again, on vlan 1). RSTP is backward compatible with STP.
The only way to get rid of PVST in a Cisco box is to run MST (and MST is also backward compatible to RSTP and STP).
    Hope this helps,
    Francois

Your command doesn't work because it's made only for tha ports that has command "spanning-tree portfast" in them. Try change spanning tree mode at the HP switch to MSTP if this is possible.

  • MSTP and RSTP

Can someone pls tell me the difference between MSTP and RSTP...Any good url will be of great help..
    Thanks in advance..

    Hi Ammavan,
The following URLs are good for MSTP and RSTP.
    MSTP: http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/146.html
    RSTP: http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/147.html
RSTP is an evolution of 802.1d spanning tree protocol. The logical topology that the network converges to with RSTP/MSTP is the same as what the network would converge to with 802.1d. However, there are several changes in the RSTP protocol including a new BPDU format, port role changes, how switches handle the BPDUs etc. The above link gives more details on each of these changes.
RSTP builds just one logical topology for all vlans. However with the Cisco implementation, similar to PVST+, RSTP is implemented as R-PVST+. What this means is that we will run a separate RSTP instance for each vlan. Hence we can load balance in this way.
MSTP is built on top of RSTP. One key difference is that MSTP allows you to group a set of vlans into a particular instance. Hence if you have a thousand vlans, you can group half of the vlan into instance 1 and the other half in instance 2. Hence there will be two instances of spanning tree running in the network then.
Hope this is not too confusing. Please read the above links and if you have any questions, please write in and I will try and explain more in detail.
    regards

  • Question regarding STP domain separation

    Hi everyone,
I have the question about separation of STP domain on layer 2 network.
The following is the example of layer 2 network and the network is within one IP subnet, one VLAN.
    Looped-Area#1-----Cat3750#1-----Layer 2 WAN-----Cat3750#2-----Looped-Area#2
    <--looped---><-------------------No loop exist---------------><---looped-->
    <---------------------------------single VLAN----------------------------->
There are some Catalyst Switches in each of "Looped-Area#1" and "Looped-Area#2".
STP is needed to run in the network in order to prevent loop.
However there is no bridge/switch loop between Cat3750#1 and Cat3750#2, in other words, multiple
paths does not exist between Cat3750#1 and Cat3750#2 as shown above.
So I think both Cat3750#1 and Cat3750#2 do not have to participate the STP domain in order to
calculate STP topology; rather Catalyst Switches in "Looped-Area#1" and Catalyst Switches in
"Looped-Area#2" should belong to different STP domain. By separating STP domain, I think I can:
for example, configure "Looped-Area#1" uses PVST+ while "Looped-Area#2" uses RSTP
avoid to reach STP convergence to whole layer 2 network
for exmaple, I use one STP domain whole network and STP root and STP secondary root exist in
    "Looped-Area#1".
And when STP root changes to secondary root, STP convergence occurs and Catalyst Switches in
"Looped-Area#1" and also in "Looped-Area#2" must wait until STP convergence is completed.
During STP convergence, traffic does not across Layer 2 WAN, in other words, traffic just
    within "Looped-Area#2" is also affected.
If I use two STP domain on each "Looped-Area#1" and "Looped-Area#2 and STP root exist each,
traffic within each area is unaffected by STP convergence occurred on another area.
I have the following question and concerns about it, could you please advise me?
To do so what configuration is needed on Catalyst Switches?
Just configure different "VTP domain name" on Catalyst Switches in each aera?
Assume that I can create two STP domain, I think BPDU packets are forwarded through whole
network regardless of differenciation of STP domain because BPDU packet is multicast.
But BPDU packets from different STP domain are ignored and not processed by Catalyst Switch.
Also assume that I can create two STP domain, I think if I use PVST+ and RSTP on each area,
for example, "Looped-Area#1" uses PVST+ and "Looped-Area#2" uses RSTP, 802.1D BPDU packets
and RSTP BPDU packets are forwarded through whole network regardless of differenciation of
STP domain and STP type(PVST+ or RSTP) because 802.1D and RSTP BPDU packets are multicast.
But Catalyst Switches in RSTP does not fall back to legacy STP(PVST+) even through any RSTP
port receives legacy 802.1D BPDU because PVST+ and RSTP are configured onto different STP domain.
    Is my understanding correct?
Could you please let me know your advise?
    Your information would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Shinichi

    Hi,
    1. There is no "STP domain" concept available for PVSTP+ nor RSTP.
    2. VTP domain has nothing common with STP instances. VTP enables a comfortable VLAN configuration, but once a VLAN is spread (even through multiple VTP domains) STP si running independantly on VTP.
    3. If you are sure "there is no bridge/switch loop between Cat3750#1 and Cat3750#2, in other words, multiple paths does not exist between Cat3750#1 and Cat3750#2", why don't you simply configure
    spanning-tree bpdufilter enable
on the Cat3750#1 and Cat3750#2 interfaces connected to the Layer 2 WAN?
    See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750/software/release/12.2_46_se/configuration/guide/swstpopt.html#wp1033638
    for details.
