RTF Files in Pages 09

I am having some issues using Pages to open and edit files with and RTF extension. I have no choice but to use an RTF file since our ERP system generates the file. My problem is Pages does not keep the correct formatting of the RTF file. If I open the RTF in Word or TextEdit the layout is correct. This only happens in Pages. Has anyone else experienced this? I would like to use Pages since I feel it is easier to use than Word and more sophisticated than TextEdit. How can Pages open the RTF file and retain the formatting? This seems pretty basic but I cannot seem to get Pages to open the file correctly.
Thanks, Rick

Hi kbixrwb
Welcome to the forum.
You have to be more specific and perhaps even provide screen grabs to show the problem. See the *Help &Terms of Use* to your right to see how to do that.
Sometimes we show almost psychic ability in determining what posters are talking about, but we have our off days.
My first suggestion would be to check the same fonts are being used.
The second would be to determine if there are any missing elements that have not survived the transition and/or features not supported in Pages.
The 3rd suggestion is to click on my blue name and email me the files along with a pdf of what they are supposed to look like.

    Why is there no support for RTF files in Pages?
    This is nuts!

    You are not alone.
    Actions speak louder than words, but Apple does manage to still distract many from what is self evident before them.
    I am astonished by those who swear that non-existent features, or features that pre-exist the current version make Pages 5.2 a major upgrade.
    An affect that does seem to wear off with familiarity, as each version of Pages 5 gets a boost in the App Store, only to see the disapproval rating surge back again.
    Pages was always one of the top purchases in the App Store, now it doesn't even rate.

  • Opening rtf files in Pages 09

    I am having trouble opening certain rtf files in Pages 09 - version 4.0.3 (766). It opens some rtf files and not others. Can anyone explain why? Tell me how to fix this? Thanks!

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for breaking me in easy on how this forum stuff works.
    The files I am working with are from a CD I purchased which contains resources for a church. For some reason I am able to open a document entitled "2010-02-17.ash_wednesday.rtf" but not a file "01ash_wednesdaysermon.rtf"! If I double click on the first of these files, it opens in TextEdit. If I drag it to my Pages icon on the dock, it opens in Pages. If I double click on the second of these files, a window opens which reads: The document "01ash_wednesdaysermon.rtf" could not be opened. If I drag it to my Pages icon on the dock, it does exactly the same thing.
    Since all the files on the CD I can open follow the same naming convention as the first one above and all the files on the CD I cannot open follow the same naming convention as the second one above, I copied the second one to my desktop and renamed it, but still got the same results.
    Other than this, I don't know of any differences between the files. If I take them to a PC, all the files open just find.
    Thanks

  • How can I quickly load up a very large ".RTF" file ? Pages

    Called a local Apple store and they were unable to answer the above question. Anyone possessing the experience in fast RTF file conversion to either Pages or Word would be helpful.

    Hmm, I thought "Using Apple Support Communities" was for questions about the forums themselves.
    Not that the OP needs it, but I would think App Store issues would go either to
    Using Mac App Store
    or maybe
    iTunes Store
    No worries though.  portogermano was directed to the correct place.

  • How can I open rtf files in pages?

    I just bought a "New iPad" (iPad3)
    I am am to succesfully sync .doc files from my MacBook running Lion over to pages on my ipad using itunes.
    Then I can sucessfully edit the .doc files.
    But when I try it with .rtf files, I can see them on my ipad, but it won't open them.
    I want to be able to move all my documents over to my ipad, but I don't want to have to convert each file individually to a .doc just so I can edit them on ipad.
    Thanks for your help!

    For iOS, what came before never supported .rtf.
    For OS X, what came before did support .rtf, but Apple decided to reduce its features to those of the iOS version.
    So Apple had a certain logic to what they did, it was just kind of backwards:-)

  • Word insert object vi only inserts first page of multipage rtf file?

    Hi,
    I need to insert a multi-page rtf file into my report template.  In Microsoft Word, this is achieved by selecting 'Insert, Object, Text from File', which inserts all pages of the rtf file.  How is this achieved in the LabView Microsoft Report Generation Toolkit?  When I use the insert object vi, it only inserts the first page of the rtf file?  I've tried other insert methods but insert object is the only vi that keeps the formatting (i.e. rtf file contains tables).
    In summary, I can insert an rtf file as an object to a bookmark, but only the first page of the rtf file is inserted.  Does anyone know how to insert a multi-page  rtf file?
    Regards,
    Allan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello Allan,
    It looks like that functionality is not included within the Report Generation Toolkit.  It is possible to produce the desired behavior through ActiveX commands.  I was able to create some sample code that successfully inserted a multipage RTF file into a report.  I did this by using the Word._Document reference to generate a Word.Range reference.  The Range reference has an InsertFile method.  This seems to input the file at the proper location.
    Could you give this a try and let me know how it goes?
    Also, just so you know, you are using an unsupported configuration of MS Office and LabVIEW.  Most of the functionality should work, but there might be some glitches.

    Does anybody know why it's not disaplying page border?
    Any help is much appriciated
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    Apparently, it's a bug based on the following thread. Workaround would be to use table as border.

  • The new Pages refuses to open RTF files

    I cannot open RTF files. Anything I get like that requires meto open it in Pages '09 to save to a .pages doc. Then I can get it open the new Pages. This needs to be fixed.

    Support for importing & exporting RTF is just one of the many, many features that have been eliminated or changed. Leave feedback for the Pages team using the link in the Pages menu.

  • How to display a RTF file in the browser?

    Hi there,
    sorry 'bout my bad English.
    My jsp page have to get a rtf file and show it. Just setting the ContentPage to text/rtf, is it a solution?
    If not just that, what code I have to write? Let me know!
    Thanks

    I'm not sure if this can be done through JSP. You may need to write a servlet and set the mime type of the response to application/rtf. Then output the rtf text to the browser. Please let me know if you get this to work - I'm having a similar problem. Thanks.

  • How to include preset in RTF import option while importing RTF files?

    Dear all,
    I created a script which will place text from rtf files present in a folder to an active document on different page based on match. I am using a preset name "myRTF" which i will use when i import rtf files without script.
    Is there a way to include this preset in script?
    I have checked many places....... but did not found.
    #target Indesign
    var myDoc = app.documents.item(0);
    var sourceFolder = Folder("/Users/admin4/Desktop/ec_txt");
    myFiles = sourceFolder.getFiles("*.rtf");
    var myFrame1 = myDoc.pageItems.itemByID(111076);  // switerland
    var myFrame2 = myDoc.pageItems.itemByID(111114);  // eurozone
    var myFrame3 = myDoc.pageItems.itemByID(111146);  // germany
    for (var i=0; i < myFiles.length; i++)
        switch (myFiles[i].name.slice (6, myFiles[i].name.lastIndexOf("_")))
            case "Switzerland_en":
            myFrame1.parentStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).place(File (sourceFolder + "/" + myFiles[i].name))
            break;
            case "Eurozone_en":
            myFrame2.parentStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).place(File (sourceFolder + "/" + myFiles[i].name))
            break;
            case "Germany_en":
            myFrame3.parentStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).place(File (sourceFolder + "/" + myFiles[i].name))
            break;

    Hi Dave, Peter,
    thanks for your reply. In that case i will check WordRTFImportPreference but not sure if customize style import can be done for paragraph style sheets.
    for example: word has "normal" and "head1" style but i want to map to indesign Body_light and H1 styles respectively.

  • How do you Place rtf files from LibreOffice into InDesign CS6

    I am new to InDesign CS6. I am having a problem Placing LibreOffice rtf files into InDesign.
    I am using LibreOffice 4.3.2.2, Lotus WordPro, and Windows 7. I am saving my work in rtf files. Each page has two columns.
    Placing rtf files from WordPro into InDesign works with no problems, but - I wonder just how long WordPro will continue to work with Windows 7 so I would like to switch to LibreOffice.
    When I Place a rtf file that has two columns from LibreOffice into InDesign, I get a loaded text cursor, but nothing loads. I can take this same file, remove the columns so there is only one column, and it loads just as it should. Further, if I load the one column file into a Master set up for two columns, the file loads into two columns with all the proper formating.
    Please guide me in how to Place the LibreOffice two column rtf files into InDesign.
      Thanks.
      Carole

    Thanks to everyone who read about my problem. I have solved it myself by using "RTF Import Options."

    Hi Scott
    Welcome to the forum.
    As you may know Apple does not announce anything it does before release, and we know as much as you do on the issue. Which is nothing.
    We are all hoping that Apple will release Pages 11 quickly and address all our issues. Based on long experience, I am not holding my breath. Eventually we will see some features which will look good in marketing and most of the real problems will likely be ignored.
    You are free to let Apple know of your issue:

  • RTF file Template Builder Clarification

    I have a custom report which uses XML publisher. The RTF file has constraint with page break. i.e. If total records exceeds 30 then print another page. The problem is 30 records are embedding in single page, but going into another page. so lot of pages are required to print the whole report. I updated the page count from 30 to 20 so that it will fit properly. But still it is not updating.
    here is the procedure I used to update the filed.
    Template Builder->Tools->Field Browser
    selected the Field, then in the edit box, I updated, I clicked UPDATE button, then REFRESH button and then CLOSE button.
    It is not saving the field rather I lost all XML end tags. I am not sure why it is happening. Is there any other place which we have edit/modify the logic.
    Since it is not saving, I am editing some column and trying to save it. But I am getting warning message after the execution of report. The reason is xml end tags are not present.
    appreciate your help.
    Thanks!!

    Sounds weird. How are you testing the modified RTF?

  • Receive error message when trying to open .rtf files.

    I have .rtf files I am trying to open for school and cannot view them in TextEdit, Pages, Word for Mac, TextWringler, or Openoffice.org.  I can open the original file but when I edit them I get this error when I try and open them:
    "The document 'xxx.rtf' could not be opened.  The file isn't in the correct format."
    In smaller text below it:
    "The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
    (To clarify, 'xxx' is not ****.  I replaced the actual file name with 'xxx' for this post.... just incase you were wondering)
    I have also changed the extension to .txt and .doc and the best outcome I get is format code.
    Any help?

    Well I solved my problem.
    What still doesn't make sense though is that dragging iTune audio files directly on to the iTunes application icon gave me the error message... which is why I originally discounted it as being a potential link problem. If I had been able to get files to open normally (i.e. without an error message) I would have known it was a simple link problem. Strange.
    Anyway... relinking my folder of audio files did the trick.
    If you don't already know how here are the steps...
    iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > click on the "Change" button and browse to the folder that contains all of your iTunes audio files... that's it.
