Thanks for the reply, Noel.
But strange, I never thought of using ACR to do the DNG conversion, so I tried it. Updated ACR to the curent 6.5 version first. My timing results were the same as using the DNG converter.
Again, a random batch of 40 raw files read from a compact flash card on a USB 3.0 card reader. A total of about 388mb. The DNG converter does the batch in 47 seconds, and ACR does it in 48 seconds. Identical times given the degree of error in my punching a stop watch.
If I copy the raw files to hard disk first and then use either ACR or the DNG converter to convert (HDD to HDD) I get the same 47-48 seconds.
So I'm curious why my ACR times are the same as DNG converter while you say ACR is twice as fast on your system. For what it's worth, my system is Windows 7, 8GB memory, on an intel I5 quad core processor.
The DNG files created by ACR are all about 50 to 55kb larger than the DNG files created by the DNG converter. But I noticed looking at the metadata in Bridge than the DNG files created by ACR have Camera Raw data in the EXIF, while the same files created by the DNG converter do not. I imagine that explains the few extra bytes. But loading the two files into Photoshop and doing a "difference" blend mode proves they are identical.
In any case, I've learned that USB 3.0 gives no advantage over USB 2.0 in this application.

  • Thunderbolt Adapter and USB for Backups to Time Capsule?

    Hi,
Would there be any [speed] benefit in using the Thunderbolt port on my iMac (and MacBook Ar ) with the appropriate adapter to backup my devices to a Time Capsule, rather than just the network port, please?
I appreciate it would probably be better with my MBA over a wireless network, but the TB port doesn't seem to work :-(
    Thank you.

Besides additional monitors, ThunderBolt is also for having high speed access to data. In order to do that the storage can't be just plain disk drives. They are so slow that many other bus structures can be used for them. In order to get the full functionality of ThunderBolt you must use things such as RAID Arrays that are able to move data faster.
For backup there is no really little or no need for speed and in fact the expenses involved in the high speed access would just be wasted on backup. It is really working with the data what that expensive is worth while considering.

You can only add songs to your iOS device from iTunes via Wi-Fi sync or via your cable, not Bluetooth.

That's an entirely different issue, unrelated to your iOS devices.

  • Lenovo X131e doesn't work with Prolific PL2303 based USB to Serial Adapter and Windows 7 x64

This is sort of a bug report. A Lenovo X131e with Windows 7 x64 and the PL2303 driver including 1.6, 1.61 and 1.7 will not successfully install the driver - Windows always reports "Driver Install Failed" on plug in to USB 3 or USB2 ports. However, putting a USB2.0 hub inbetween the USB to Serial Adapter and either USB port type makes the adapter work fine. This was not the case with the X130e. I'm not sure where to report this beyond this posting, but more of an FYI.

If the USB can be used for other equipment,
That may be compatibility issues for USB and Prolific PL2303.
Don't plug Serial Adapter when installing the driver,
Ofter installation, Connect serial adapter to see whether it is working normally.

  • Can you connect a usb SuperDrive if you use a lightning to usb camera adapter and a usb hub?

I was just wondering if ypu could connect a usb SuperDrive if you use the lightning to usb camera adapter, a usb hub, and then plug the SuperDrive into the hub. Will it work to play disks, or movies, or something?

No, drive consume too much power.
Try using a wireless flash drive.

    I'm using new 13-inch MacBook Air early 2015. OS X 10.10.3.

Thanks Malcolm - Do you think it might be worth trying to flash the firmware on these cases - there seem to be updaters available on Prolific's website. Obviously I'd have to do it on a PC. I've emailed Prolific asking them about my problem. No reply as yet, and I'm not holding my breath! Do you know if there are any other posts on these boards relating to Prolific? Stupid question really - I'll just do a search...
Thanks again for your post. Cheers from Bonnie Scotland.

  • Can I use the Ipad Wall Adapter and my Iphone USB cord to charge my Iphone 5s?

I heard that the IPad wall adapter will charge an IDevice faster, so I was wondering if I used my IPads wall adapter and my IPhones USB cord to charge my IPhone 5s, will it be okay?

You are welcome.  Knowing which chargers are interchangeable helps when traveling, I only carry the iPad charger now since it works fine with the iPhone.  The other way around will not work, however.  You cannot charge an iPad with an iPhone charger, the power rating is too low.

  • Lightning usb adapter and connecting devices

I purchased a lightning usb adapter and when i connect my wi drive to it, a message comes up sayin "device requires too much power" how do i fix this?

There is no "lightning USB adapter", per se. If you are referring to the Camera Connection Kit, the iPad does not support direct connection to external storage except for flash drives containing photos, and then only if the drive is set up in a very specific way. Please tell us what specific adapter you have and what this "drive" is that you are trying to connect.
BTW, you posted in a forum intended for 1990's era hardware. I've asked the Hosts to move the thread to the iPad forum.
    Regards.

  • While charging my ipad when i plugged in the adapter, the adapter and the usb port gets very very hot... Is this normal? I replaced my ipad and adapter but the problem still exist.

While i charge my ipad with adapter the adapter more specifically the internal round cell of adapter and the usb port becomes very very hot... And ultimately my ipad back starts heating a bit. Is that normal?

Take your charger, cable & iPad to an Apple Store for evaluation.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.

  • 4th Gen. ipod. No longer charges from wall socket. Still can charge from computer. Wall power adapter and cord both work fine on other devices. Wall Why?

4th Generation ipod. Used to charge fine from wall socket (cord and USB adapter) and could also charge on the computer. Suddenly stopped charging from the wall. The same cord and adapter still work for my iphone, so there is not problem with either of them. What has changed? Why won't the ipod charge from the wall anymore? Is there anything I can do about it?

Thanks! It didn't actually work with the one I was using to charge the computer either. We had tried the computer cable with the power adapter, and it didn't  work to charge the ipod, though it does charge my iphone. Following your idea further,  I waited for my husband to get home from a trip and tried one of his extra cables he keeps in his backpack. That cable worked in with the USB  power adaptor. I had thought that because the cable I use on my computer charges my iphone through the USB power adapter or the computer, and that it charged the ipod through the computer that it was fully functional. Apparantly not.  Thanks again.

  • Attaching VGA video adapter and Firewire device

I'm using the VGA video adapter to attach my brand new Mac mini to a VGA screen. As the space between video port and Firewire port is too narrow with the VGA video adapter attached I can't connect any Firewire cable!
Anyone who knows how to connect VGA video adapter and Firewire device at the same time?

The DVI-VGA adapter I got with my last mini was barely wider than the video port on the back of the mini and since a firewire connector is also barely wider than the FW port itself, there was no problem connecting to both at the same time, with a small but distinct space between. Indeed, it's about the same space as between the adapter and a cable plugged into the nearest of the USB ports on the other side.
If you're having problems, you might find that connecting the firewire cable first might help, but otherwise either the adapter or the connector on your firewire cable is non-standard. If you still can't connect both, take the mini, along with your firewire cable and the DVI-VGA adapter to an Apple store and ask them to try.

  • I recently got a iPad camera connection kit hoping to directly download my photos from the memory card for my camera, a Sony Cybershot. When I put my memory card in the adapter and plug it in to the iPad nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I recently purchased an iPad camera connection kit hoping to directly download pictures from my camera to my iPad. When I put my memory card into the adapter and plug it in to my iPad nothing happens.  My camera is a Sony Cybershot and the memory card is a Sony memory stick PRO duo 512 mb.  I don't think I am doing anything incorrect.  Is my camera/memory card incompatible with this adapter?

The Camera Connection Kit works with SD cards, not Memory Sticks.
Maybe you can find an MS to SD adapter, or use the USB connection with the USB cable that came with the camera.

  • Displayport and usb

Hi, I'm planning to buy displayport or/and usb adapter/conventer between my macbook pro and LCD monitor(s). If I plug displayport/dvi or hmdi between LCD monitor AND plug usb conveter vga/dvi to other old monitor. I already use my mouse in my one of two usb. Will they affect/damage my mac? If yes, I'll only use displayport to dvi LCD. (no hmdi) And will plan to buy the new LCD monitor with hmdi and dvi.
My mac displayport/dvi to LCD monitor
                                                                    > at same time. Damage? or won't work? for my mac.
My mac (other) ubs/vga to old monitor
    Thanks in advance.

I have been using the display for several years, connected to my G4 PPC Mac Pro. Now that I have a new MacBook Pro, I was thinking of getting rid of the tower and simply using the laptop.
The cord coming out of the back of the display is connected to the tower with both the DVI plug and two USB plugs. It didn't occur to me to look on that cord because my understanding was that there was a port on the display itself, and I always think of that cord as simply a power cord.
I understand getting a DVI-to-Mini DisplayPort converter cable, but the Cinema Display is apparently powered by the Mac Pro tower. Would a laptop be able to power the Cinema Display? And would I have to connect both USB plugs to the laptop? That would take up both of the MacBook Pro's USB ports.

  • Firewire adapter to USB, correct one

I'm still working on the old G4.  We do have in our parts bin a dvd/cdr writer player but it is USB.  What specs do I need to look for to use an adapter between the firewire and USB of the drive.   Walmart has several on their site but the specs are lost on me.

Most should work if they are USB 2.  Note, the pre-September 2003 Powerbooks only support USB 1.1, which is really slow at only about 15 Mbps.  Use
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413 to determine your Mac's age.
For all 15" and 17" Powerbooks there are USB 2 PCMCIA cards if they are older, though they likely won't give enough power for computer powered optical drives.
Not all DVDs are readable.  Some formatted Joliet or UDF may only work with other software:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3003
Some optical drives will require a special firmware to work with iDVD, or other Apple DVD based applications.
Some DVD interactive content is only available to Interactual's DVD player for the Mac.   VLC Client offers some DVD compatibility that Apple's own does not.
http://www.macsales.com/ sells external dvd drives that work with all Macs and all Apple software.
As others indicated Mac OS X won't boot from USB DVD drives.
