Ruler and Info panel give different pixel dimensions

The pixel dimensions in Illustrator CS5's Info panel are wrong. Can anyone suggest why?
I have a web layout in Illustrator that I'm transposing into Adobe Muse, using Save for Web and Devices.
I want to use the X and Y coordinates and the dimensions of the objects in Illustrator to place them correctly in Muse, so that all the elements scale to the right size.
The Illustrator artboard is 960 pixels wide and the layout fits the artboard. Similarly, the site width in Muse is 960px wide.
The measuring units are in pixels in Illustrator, but something very strange is going on.
in the Info panel, a grouped object - a logo - is described as 16383 pixels wide and 211px high.
It's simply not possible, not least because the logo is taller than it is wide. But when I measure it with the ruler tool, it tells me that the logo is 136px high and 122px wide.
The problem only applies to this grouped object and it's not because it's grouped with some other thing that is 16383 pixels wide - the bounding box fits precisely round the logo when it is selected.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Badger,
What happens if you Copy and Paste that Group into a new Document (you may the rest follow if it helps)?

  • Why does my Macintosh HD and Utility Disk give different available space values?

My MacBook Pro (about a year and a half old) has started running extremely slowly out of the blue, to the point it is barely functional. I've tried basically everything, restarting, cleaning up the desktop, clearing out my downloads file, starting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, updating the operating system. Now my Mac HD says it has about 400GB free space out of 700GB, however today I was running utility disk to see if that would detect a problem and when selecting the first Macintosh HD option it says I only have around 18MB free, is this my problem? and if so how do I fix it? and why would I have two different values for available space? The second Macintosh HD entry does have the same available space in the get info page as is listed in the Disk Utility.

You open up the address in a browser and see all the files on the mirror and the dates they changed, there should be a file called extra.db.tar.gz which is the file listing what's on the mirror. You can also check mirror status on this page https://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html

  • How to reduce jpg file size, not pixel dimensions?

I am preparing images for the web and I really have 2 questions: one about gifs, and one about jpgs.
My standard procedure is to reduce the image to the desired pixel dimensions at 600 dpi
That gives me a crisp small image. then I either use it as is if the file size is low enough (I try for under 600 kb) or convert it to a gif with the save for web and devices tool.
So here are my 2 questions (I will count this solved with either answer)
    1) When I convert to a gif I have the 4 boxes: one with original size, the other 3 with options but often the options are too low res for me How do I change my 3 options to start at a higher gif res?
    2) If I try to reduce the file size of the jpg in the image size box I set the resolution lower ( 400, 300), which lowers the pixel dimensions and the filesize, but I don't want to cahnge the pixel dimensions. And  If I reset the pixel dimensions back to the size I want them, even though it is a lower resolution the file size doesn't change. How to reduce jpg file size using only the resolution, not pixel dimensions?  PS I have tried messing with checking and unchecking the 3 little boxes( scale styles, constrain proportions, and resample) but nothing has worked.

Gif is not a great filetype, especially if you want a crisp image. What are your pixel dimensions?
For web, it makes no difference what the dpi is, only the final pixel dimensions so once you have that as you want, use 'Save for Web and Devices' and you can lower the quality - 100% being max and 0% being lowest. I wouldn't save anything below 55%. For a 600kb image, your dimensions must be rather big.

  • BUG: Info panel displays incorrect Hue values

Recently, I've been doing a lot of work with color in Fireworks and came across the following bug, which appears to be a longstanding issue within the application. Rather than keeping it to myself, I figured I'd post it here in addition to submitting a bug report with Adobe. So here it is...
Hue values displayed within the Info panel (in HSB mode) do not consistently match the values displayed in the Color Mixer panel—including basic colors such as pure Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta. The values are 1 degree off—most often below the Color Mixer value, but sometimes above (as with Magenta). This holds true whether using with the Eyedropper tool or the Color Picker swatches eyedropper, and whether sampling from the canvas or from swatches.
For example, the following inconsistencies were observed when sampling the centermost horizontal strip within CS6's default Color Cubes swatches picker. Note that over 50% of these colors are affected by the issue.
The Color Mixer seems to display the correct values, while the Info panel's values appear to be incorrect. Note that this issue affects the HSB mode only; the RGB and Hex values are consistent between both panels.
This bug has been observed in Fireworks CS6, Fireworks CS5.1 and Fireworks 8 on Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
Here's the bug report submitted for this issue:
    Product name: Fireworks
    Product Version: 12.0.0.236
    Product Language: English
Your operating system: Mac OS 10.6.8 (Intel-based)
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: The Info panel displays incorrect Hue values for many colors—including pure Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta. The Hue values are usually 1 degree below the value displayed in the Color Mixer panel (e.g., 59 instead of 60 for Yellow) but sometimes 1 degree above (e.g., 301 instead of 300 for Magenta). This is true whether using the Eyedropper tool or the Color Picker swatches eyedropper, and whether sampling from the canvas or from swatches.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
In an open Fireworks document, open the Info, Color Mixer, and Swatches panels. Within the Color Mixer and Info panels, set the color mode to HSB.
Draw a Rectangle and set its fill to Yellow (#FFFF00) using the Color Picker.
Observe the Hue values displayed in the Color Mixer and Info panels.
Select the Eyedropper (I) tool, and sample the rectangle's fill color. Again, observe the Hue values displayed in both the Color Mixer and Info panels.
Results: In both steps 3 and 4, the Hue value for pure Yellow (#ffff00) appears as 60 degrees in the Color Mixer panel but 59 degrees in the Info panel.
Expected results: The Hue for pure Yellow (#ffff00) should appear as 60 degrees in both panels.
Note that this issue affects the Info panel's HSB mode only; the RGB and Hex values are consistent between panels. Also note that this bug affects over 50% of the "pure" hues within CS6's Color Cubes swatches palette. For more info, see the following forum post:

This bug has been observed in Fireworks CS6, CS5.1 and FW8 on Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

I haven't done anything other than add my footage to the timeline. I have 2 layers (1 targa seq and 1 png seq). As I move my mouse from the Timeline to the Comp Panel, the color values flash for a split second and go away. If I press Opt+1 (2, 3, and 4) the Info Panel displays the color for that one pixel but the values go blank as soon as I move my mouse. This happens in the Comp Panel mostly. If I open a Footage or Layer Panel, sometimes the values show, sometimes not. Never had this issue in previous versions.

  • Having the info panel open with curves open

    Hi,
Just switched from CS6 to PS CC. I usually set my white and black points using curves. Set the points then go to curves and adjust the points with the RGB channels. In PS CC, I cannot seem to have the curves and info panel open at the same time. Anyone know how to accomplish this?
    Thank you,
    Jim

Hi, c.pfaffenbichler, Here is a screenshot of the curves properties panel open. I would like to see the info panel open at the same time so I can drag the point on the curve to specific values of R,G and B. If I click on the info tab in this curves panel the info comes up but I do not see the curves properties anymore. I want to be able to see both open at the same time.
    Thank you,
    Jim

  • Displaying both pixel and inch dimesnsion in the Info Panel

Anybody else constantly switching the Info Panel from displaying inches to pixels and vice versa?
How to avoid having to do this? I either want to see one or the other, somtimes being able to see both simultaneously would be nice. While dragging out Rectangular Marquees, doing Transforms, etc.

I actually installed the trial of Flash Builder but did not get far before it expired, so I can only share Silkrooster’s suspicion that it may be possible.

  • In the Info panel, how do I display pixel values as values, not as percentages?

I'm trying to show, using the eye dropper tool, the actual values of pixels in an 8-bit grayscale image (Mode command confirms that's what's there). In the Info panel, the eye dropper tool displays percentages for every type of color information (K, CMYK), while the "8-bit" field remains blank.
I've looked at Properties and pretty much everything else that I can find with no luck.
    Photoshop CS6, 64 bit, Win7-64
    Thanks!

    Noel,
Thanks for your reply. I thought this had been fixed by recreating the Preferences file, but this morning I was back to percentages. I did have different settings in the Info Panel from the ones in your very helpful picture, and after I changed mine to match yours I now see 0-255 values in the R, G, B settings when using the eyedropper on this grayscale image.
Instead of RGB Color for the First Color Readout I had "Actual Color". This by itself causes percentages to be displayed. All options for the Second Color Readout all seem to produce percentages.
"Actual Color" is what I normally use for the first readout. In the case of a Grayscale document, it will display a K (black) value. For a RGB image, it will display R,G and B values. And so on.
When 8-bit is chosen for the value format, we expect a value of 0..255 to be displayed. As you know, that works fine for the RGB readout, but a Grayscale readout displays a percentage instead.
So if you set one of the readouts to RGB and 8-bit, you can get 0..255 values to be displayed for your Grayscale document.
When the document is Grayscale, the RGB values are a conversion from the document colour space to the RGB working space as defined in Edit > Color Settings. To get the true values of the pixels, the Grayscale document profile and RGB working space must be complementary (for lack of a better word). That's why, in my first reply, I said to use the following combinations:
Doc with sGray profile and RGB working space of sRGB.
Doc with Gray Gamma 2.2 profile and RGB working space of Adobe RGB.

  • Matching InDesign and Photoshop Pixel Dimensions

I'm attempting to use InDesign to determine pixel sizes of a baseline grid and typography that will eventually be used on a webpage. Since Photoshop doesn't have a baseline grid or a baseline grid snapping feature, I thought I might be able to make something work in InDesign.
Unfortunately I'm running into a problem, where pixel dimensions in InDesign don't seem to match up with pixel sizes in Photoshop. For example, with documents at 100% view in both Photoshop and InDesign, a 100px square appears larger on screen in InDesign than in Photoshop. It's as if InDesign is rendering the view at a different resolution than Photoshop.
Above you can see a square made at 42 pixels in InDesign viewed at 100% zoom (though InDesign insists on displaying the size as points) with the same square screen-captured and opened in Photoshop. The square is actually measured at 54 pixels.
How can I get InDesign to display the same pixel sizes as Photoshop?

True enough on both counts! Relative resolution and scaling is definitely helpful for print design (I learned early on what scale to view in order to preview onscreen at what would be actual physical size--the reverse of double-clicking the zoom tool now, I guess.)
But I see no reason why we can't have it both ways. Isn't that the whole point of "web" or "Digital Publishing" intent in document setup? Why not have Indesign switch to 1-1px scale when you create a document set to web intent? Wouldn't be any different, functionally, than what the script does, it would just revert to physical scale when I open a print document. Seems like it should be obvious that the preview scale when creating a web site should be 1 pixel is 1 pixel--my browser isn't going to display my website at 123.7% scale. Or that if you chose the "iPad" digital pub template, the display scale should be twice that of a (theoretical) Retina display iPad. It's functionally just a different number, right? That is, if I were writing a script, I could theoreticall specify any resolution I wanted to get the desired display scale.
Ok, so now I'm turning this into feature request, I know, and the question has been thoroughly answered. But it needn't be that complicated--all we really need is a place to CHOOSE what mode to opperate in, right? If Adobe really prefers not to open the output-intent-view-scale can o' worms, then why not leave an Acrobat-style resolution preference where I can type in a number? The obvious advantage of that over the script solution is that it's easy to set or reset.
Aside: while we're on the topic of having it both ways in regards to using Indesign for more than print work... Why not include the option to set the document color profile (most likely to sRGB) when I choose "web" intent in a new document dialog? Oh! And give me actual RGB black and white color swatches in "web" documents.
I'm just excited about the idea of Adobe taking a few more steps in the direction they've started with the whole document intent feature set in Indesign. A more inviting web design environment wouldn't in any way keep me from continuing to use Indesign for print work (all day every day). What is there to lose? Not like they're developing Fireworks anymore, and Indesign already makes more sense for web than Illustrator. ... I'm sure it's a HUGE internal debate at Adobe. Probably some Fireworks replacement app in the works that I don't know about.

  • Pixel Dimensions and File Size

Can anybody please explain the relation between pixel dimensions and file size?
Being naive, (or straight-forward if you prefer) I had assumed that pixel dimensions wide times pix dimension high = file size. Wrong!
For instance a .JPG file 374 X 500 has a file size of 41,275 bytes. But 374 times 500 = 18,700 so the two are different issues.

Thanks Rich. It kind of sounds like you know something about this.
I see 1 pixel, and 24 bit color would make 24 bits at 8 bits to a byte, so there's the 3 bytes.
I selected a certain photo and used the APPLE i command to see if could find if it had 8 bit color or, whatever. That infomation was not on the info function, but it did say something about RGB color profile.
Is 8 bit color a near certain bet in most applications, or was that just for the sake of illustration?
I Googled 8 bit color and go to a Wikipedia Article
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth
which explained a lot, but its more technical depth than what I'm prepared to deal with. The net net, as far as I can tell is that image size (before compression) is dimension times color depth in its native mode, but I suppose what the native mode is and what the displayed mode is could be separate issues?
I was under the impression that the compression in JPG formt files comes out, or is decompressed, when the photo is printed or displayed? No?

  • After Effects and Rotoscoping causes fps loss in info panel

    Hello,
I am pretty new to after effects, so please take it easy on me if this is an easily fixed issue or if I am doing something wrong. Here is my whole process.
I have a canon xl2, shooting in 24p with 2:3 selected. I then import the video from the camera to premiere using capture. This was filmed at 16:9.
In PP I open a new project, I use DV - 24p Widescreen 48khz. I have the time code set to auto detect in capture.
I then import the captured video to after effects. I am trying to get better at rotoscope brush, so this is where the problem is.
I import the file, drag the source to the new composition icon, then double click the layer in the composition.  I select rotobrush and brush the object.
I then select play, which will go thru and play the file, adjusting the rotobrush. As I view the file, my info panel is up and it begins by showing 23.976 (realtime). The preview panel is showing 23.98 fps.
After a few seconds, the rotoscoping fails and the info panel shows my actual fps vs the file fps.  SO in red it shows something like 7.005/23.976 NOT realtime.
I've tried to do some research on this, and I am not sure if everything is set up right.  I have read that its best to work on noninterlaced video in AE, i believe it is seperating.  In interpret footage it is showing under fields and pulldowns area: lower field first and then it is removing pulldown with WWSSW.  Showing a effective framerate of 23.976.  Under frame rate area i have selected [conform to frame rate] and 29.97 is in the window. Under pixel aspect i have widescreen 1.21.
I know this is a huge wall of text, but I'd rather swamp you with info then not have enough.  Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Why the fps drops out so much on the rotoscope? Also note, I am only losing fps after pressing play to have rotoscope find the edges itself.
Thank you for any help on this matter.
    further info:
Running window 7 pro - 64 bit, adobe CS5 production premium. At the moment its the trial version - get my copy in the mail tommorrow.
PC is i7 920 oc'd to 3.6, 6 gigs ram, 7200 rpm HD with 64Mb cache, gtx480 with 1500Mb Vram. Using the latest Nvidia drivers.
I believe I am using OpenGL for rendering, but not positive.

Ok, awesome.  Thanks a ton for taking the time to explain it to me and make sure that I understand the proper way to reference it.
With all this considered, is there any reason why someone would do the traditional rotoscoping vs using the rotobrush to create a matte?
To me it seems like the roto brush pretty much replaces traditional rotoscoping.  If thats the case, wouldn't it almost be considered a new rotoscoping method.
Like in the past, people used to dig holes with shovels and by hand.  Excavating holes this way was hard and took alot of time.
Over the years, technology made it possible to use a backhoe to dig holes, making it super easy. Both methods are excavating, one is just using an easier method.
I guess thats where my confusion came in, I guess the way I look at it, due to never having done the traditional rotoscoping method, I just considered it the same thing.
Anyway, I hope I dont look like a giant *** with my posts.  Cuz anyone willing to take time outta there day to help someone else in a courteous manner deserves all the praise I can give.
    Thanks again.

  • Info panel/height and width

When resizing or dragging a guide out the info panel or the height and width box dimensions ar enot live. They do not change until I let go so it is either guess or manually type in. is there a preference setting for this? If not what is the fix. Thanks!

Well I am going to answer my own question if that is allowed. I know there are ratings and such for right answers but I figured out what was wrong/sort of. I closed out and rebooted then brought the program back up and ticked info in the window menu area and voila it is working. So a reboot has done the trick I think.

  • Remove parent folder and all subfolders (custom info panels)

I'm writing a script to help users install custom info panels in the Folder.userData + '/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/3.0/panels' location.  I have a working script to copy files, but I also want to delete previous versions of the same info panel.   I also want to allow for the possibility that could be several older versions so I need to loop through them.  I know that I need to empty the files of a folder before it can be removed.  I can remove one instance of a ninfo panel, but not several - I'm having trouble getting the function to loop.
For example, if I have two old info panel version to delete (myPanel_v1 and myPanel_v2) can use getFiles (myPanel*) to get an array with the names of the two parent folders:
    ~/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/XMP/Custom%20File%20Info%20Panels/3.0/panels/myPanel_v1,~/AppData/ Roaming/Adobe/XMP/Custom%20File%20Info%20Panels/3.0/panels/myPanel_v2
What I can't do is the loop through the subfolders and their contents based on the index of this array.  Perhaps there is a completey different approach I need to take?
The code below does remove a single instance of my custom ino panel, but I can't figure out a way to make it loop.
    var CS5panelsFolder = (Folder.userData + '/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/3.0/panels');
    var xmask = 'myPanel*'
var xRemove =  (Folder (CS5panelsFolder).getFiles (xmask));  // returns an array with all folders with 'VRA_beta' in the name
    for (var i = 0; i < xRemove.length; i++) var xBin = (Folder (xRemove[i]+'/bin').getFiles());
    for (var i = 0; i < xRemove.length; i++) var xLoc = (Folder (xRemove[i]+'/loc').getFiles());
    for (var i = 0; i < xRemove.length; i++) var xRes = (Folder (xRemove[i]+'/resources').getFiles());
    for (var i = 0; i < xRemove.length; i++)
//Loop through array of xBin files and remove them
