Ruler Tool problem

I use the ruler tool a lot and hate the way it keeps reverting to the eye-dropper tool in the toolbar all the time! Is there a way to stop this from happening? If you use the ruler tool, then some other tools all seems okay until you save the image - at that point the ruler is replaced with the default eye-dropper tool. Therefore if you want to use it again you have to select it again which is a pain. Most tools seem to stay as they are when saving except the ruler. This was the same in CS3 by the way. I was hoping this might have been fixed in CS4.
I'm using CS4ext in Vista Business.
Thanks for any help.

Not as far as I know. People have been complaining about this for as long as I can remember.

Re CS5 Ruler tool has stopped functioning. How can I correct this problem?

First try re-setting the Ruler Tool from the tool's fly-out menu.
If that doesn't do it, then trash and recreate Photoshop preferences.
If you had at least indicated your platform, I could be more specific, but here it goes anyway:
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

  • CC 2014 Ruler tool Straighten button is dimmed in layered files (Mac and Win versions)

I have a Grayscale/8 bpc file with a Levels Adjustment layer.
In CC 2014 I use the ruler tool to drag out a line and the notice the Straighten button in the Options bar is dimmed whether I have the Background layer or the adjustment layer selected. If I flatten the image the Straighten button is active.
In CC, if I select the Background layer, the Straighten button is active. Not if I select the Adjustment layer. Same behavior in CS6. (So the problem looks to be in CC2014 only)
This is noted in both the Mac and Windows versions of CC 2014.1.0 (which would leave out the OS and hardware glitches.)
Tried a flat grayscale file, added an adjustment layer, and noticed the same problem in CC 2014.  (that eliminates a buggy file)
The fact that at least with the Background layer selected in CC and CS6, the Straighten button is active, so this is looking like something specific to CC 2014.
Before I call it a "bug", I would like to know if anyone is seeing this or knows  of a fix?

Ok, changing the background layer does activate the straighten button without having to flatten the document.
I'll keep this question open for more feedback before marking it.

  • Ruler tool-staying visible

The problem with the ruler tool is that when I select another tool the former DOES not stay visible. something I need.
For example, I make a measurement with the ruler tool, then select the move tool and the mesurement made dissapears from the document.
Is there a way I can fix the above issue?
    Thanks

No...this does not achieve what I want though. because even if I record a measurement, upon changing the tool, from measurement to select for example, the measurement line dissapears.
I want the measurement line be visible regardless of the photoshop tool selected at anytime.
Of course I do not know if what I am asking is feasible at all.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Ruler Tool- Error 48: File or folder does not exist

I am trying to use the new RULER TOOL in CS5 (64-bit mode) running 10.6.4 and I get the following error:
Error 48: File or folder does not exist.
    Line: 31
    ->  $.evalFile( g_StackScriptFolderPath + "Geometry.jsx");
    Any ideas?

i'm getting the exact error using Windows XP with CS5.5
error 48: file or folder does not exist
    line: 31
    -> $.evalFile(g_StackScriptFolderPath + "Geometry.jsx");

    hello ... anyone out there?
how do we get support for this error?

  • How do I add the ruler tool to my tools bar?

I don't see the ruler tool (for tilt correction, etc.) on the left bar display. How do I add/display it in CS5?

And for all that expand to show the nested Tools, there will be a tiny black triangle in the upper-right corner of the Button in the Toolbar.
I think that most Tools now have nested Tools in the group, so about all will have the little triangle.
    Good luck,

  • How can I get the ruler tool to show length in inches?

This doc says the units the ruler tool shows length in are changed using preferences:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/en/photoshop/using/positioning-ruler-tool.html
This document says the ruler tool always uses pixels unless you change measurement scale on a per image basis:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop//10.0/help.html?content=WS3D3EF585-502B-49d2-85F F-537E9DC25C21.html
So far, the latter seems to be the case, but that's horribly inconvenient. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there some setting somewhere that will make the ruler tool display measurement length in inches (or what ever I set in preferences)?
Note that I am not talking about the units shown at the top and left side when the ruler is in view, I'm talking about the ruler tool's position and length data, whether or not the ruler is in view.

    Trevor,
Unfortunately, that only changes the ruler units, not the mouse coordinates displayed when taking measurements using the ruler tool.
    gener7 nailed it though.

  • Laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0

today I just updated the system and my laptop runs dramatically hotter after that. I read the archwiki, it does talk about the laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0 but when I opened the file /usr/sbin/laptop_mode, the lines which the wiki mentions are not there. I had the problem but edited the line in /usr/sbin/laptop_mode and it worked. But thoes lines are not there anymore. I guess they changed it at the recent update of laptop-mode-tools.
Regarding your heat problem; is there any other thing you use to cut down power usage (from AUR  maybe)? I use acpi_call from AUR had to edit lines there aswell, but it should be updated by now.

ANSWER: out of the box installation on an XP Dell laptop resulted in NO installation errors but a missing subdirectory - or the in-application updates removed subdirectories.
re-installing the complete application installed the missing subdirectories.
hopefully those with the same error now have something to check on with their application directory structure.  there is at least one other who has this error on a Mac.
    thanks to all who responded.

    Which operating system?

  • CS3 Ruler Tool

According to Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book, there's a ruler tool hidden behind the Eyedropper tool. All I see are the Eyedropper tool, the Color sampler tool, and the Count tool.
    I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, v10.0.1
How do I get the ruler tool?
    Keith

    > What's a count tool? Dracula maybe?
A very simple, basic new tool available in CS3 Extended only:

  • Wierd Poly Lasso Tool problem

Hi, I just started using PS on Mac, and having a polygonal lasso tool  problem, when I make any selected area with the poly lasso and complete  the shape, say for instance a series of sun rays, it ends up with a bunch of boxes in the shape, that I didn't put there, I'll attach a  screen shot, any idea what is going on?

Hi, yeah, i tried that, have there been any bugs that relate to the polygonal lasso tool?
heres a post with the same problem, but no fix- this seems really silly

  • Is it possible to calibrate the ruler tool in centimeters?

I need to show specific ratios on the image, e.g., this distance is to this as that is to that. A measuring tool that works in pixels is pretty cumbersome. IS it possible to re-calibrate the ruler tool to measure in millimeters, centimetres, etc.? Pixels don't really make it for me.  It seems like an obvious choice, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Thanks, guys. You were right. And thanks for coming up with it fast.

  • Brush Tool problems

I am having an ongoing problem with the Brush Tool in my PSE9.
I have the question written out in Word Pad but I can't seem to copy & paste it into this box.  The 1st thing I need to know is how to copy & paste my simple text question here.
    Bob

    Barbara B.:
It has been several days since I heard anything from you on my ongoing Brush Tool problem. From your digging what have you found? In the past 10 days I have continued spotting B&W negative scans & trying to collect additional information on the propensity of the brush tool to create a line running across the image. Basically what I have found reinforces the 7 points/factors I outlined in posting #14 on 7/7/12. I'll go over & expand on those again here.
    1) When the line runs it always goes from where I am currently spotting to some point I previously clicked & put a spot. This is not necessarily the most recent spot. It can travel to a spot I did 30 sec. ago (& have done several others in the interim). It does need to be on the visable portion of the screen.
    2) As stated. The width of the line is the same as the width of the specific selected brush size. Usually between nos. 4 & 9. The tone of the line is the same as the tone selection (so far I have only experienced this with B&W).
    3) The more I spot the slower the computer's reaction time becomes. After spotting for an hour, or two, I will see several seconds between the time I click on a spot & the time the spot actually appears on the negative. I have tried turning off PSE & rebooting it. This seems to speed things back up for a while.
    4) When the situation in #3 occurs I obviously can't click rapidly.
    5) I still don't understand why this happens at all. I move the curser outside of the image frame towards the Vert. & Horz. slider as I get ready to move to a new part of the image. I place the curser on the slider control a left click (as though to move the slider). Instead of moving the slider it shoots one of these lines out onto the image from under the slider control & out onto the image field to some point where there was a previous spotting click. These lines will often run half way across the image field. I have saved some of these examples & could attach them to an email for you to see.
    6) Once one of these lines start appearing, or running, they seem to increase with frequency. Almost as though the software is developing a memory. As I say in #3, if I re boot PSE the memory either is erased, or at least reduced.
    7) The only time the original statement is not totally true is when a line runs from under the slider (which is outside the viewing area) out into the visable image field.
Here are some additional factors I have noticed:
    8) I normally begin spotting by setting the view drop down to "actual pixels". I notice that If I further magnify the image by then clicking once on the "zoom in" option I have a reduced frequency if these wild lines appearing. This may be due to the fact that when the image is larger I am working (stippling) at a slower rate.
    9) If I have a hair or scratch on the neg. (normally using a drawn line to obliterate) & I use a stippling/clicking pattern rather than a drawn line the frequency or chance of a free running line is reduced - not eliminated, but reduced

  • Fast selection of the ruler tool?

    Hi,
I often use the ruler tool. Its located below the eyedropper tools.
How can I bring up this tool to select it with one fast click - instead of long clicking at the eyedropper to wait the popping up the (sub)tools.
The shortcut "I" only selects the first of the tools.
    Thanks,
    Konrad

    What version of photoshop?
In both the regular and extended versions of photoshop one can change the Keyboard shortcut for the Ruler Tool using Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts
Are you using an extended version of photoshop and if so which one?
For example in cs5 extended one can set a keyboard shortcut for the Ruler Tool through Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts.

  • Anyone else annoyed by the location of Xcode4's move of compiled executables?
