Rules Regarding Software Updates

I purchased a MacBook Pro in March this year and have been extremely happy with it. I have also been keeping up with the discussions on this forum concerning 10.5.7 and 10.5.8, and now understand that I need to do three key things when installing software updates: 1) back-up my system; 2) repair permissions before and after each update; and 3) download and install updates one at a time, so that if there is a problem with a multiple update, I have some idea which update caused the problem.
If I've understood this correctly, I now realize that installing updates is a significant investment of time and energy. Before I begin to make this investment, I just want to be clear - are these three steps essential for every single update that appears on my software update program? I have been slow and cautious about updating the MacBook Pro, but I have not had any problems with any so far.
Thanks for your thoughts.

The one thing you should be a little cautious about is firmware updates. If you have a full clone of your system and do a software update and find you have a problem, you can restore from an older image... this is not the case with firmware updates. In general, you can not go back to an older firmware. As a result, if a firmware update causes a problem, you're stuck until a new one is released. It's usually a good idea to wait just a few days after a firmware update is released. You can check out these forums to see what, if any, problems people are reporting and then you can decide if you want to go with the update or not.

  • Help needed regarding Software Update

    Hello,
yesterday I was downloading the OS X 10.6.2 software update (500mb+) and when it finished downloading it said that an error occured and that I had to check my internet connection.
My router was having some problems, so I figured that was it, so I started to download it again, but since it was already late at night, I canceled it and turned my MacBook off.
Today, when I tried to update my OS again and was waiting for the Software Update to "Search new updates" (idk how exactly its written in english, my Mac is in portuguese), it took longer than usual and a message appeared, saying that "The Software Update couldn't connect to the update server", and it also said "Make sure that your computer is connected to the internet and try again".
As I said, my router is kinda weird this days, so I connected my internet cable directly to my MacBook, but the same message keeps appearing.
What could be happening and what can I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pedro

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I won't try to address all the problems you're having, but you should be able to download either version of the 10.6.2 updater directly from the URLs:

  • WLC HA Configuration - Recommended Precedure for Software Update

    Hello,
just some best-practise questions regarding the new HA feature of 7.3 code:
With use of AP-SSO and the hot-standby controller, as I understand during software update on the primary controller the code is copied to the hot-standby controller in the background. In case of any failure (e.g. unsupported configuration or feature) there is no chance to use temporarily an controller running the old software version. Furthermore, with HA I loose the possibility to test a new software feature on an updated secondary controller.
Is this true or is there another possibility to "get some confidence" regarding software updates with HA? Any ideas are welcome.
    Thank you,
    Benjamin

Well, to sort of answer your question.  If your only WLC's you have is the two in HA, then you do loose the functionality of upgrading one and performing some test before you upgrade the other WLC and move aps to it.  Some companies I have done work with do have a lab environment with spare WLC's and they can do this.  What I would suggest is that you either post in the forum if others have upgraded their HA WLC's and see how long they have had it up and if they have had or seen any issues.  Even if you had another WLC and tested with that, testing with another HA pair would be the way I would go about verifying things work okay.  You never know if there is an issue with the code that just affects HA and that would be my concern.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Software Update through UNIX command

    Hey all,
Just a quick question regarding Software Update through Remote Desktop.
I'm running the UNIX command softwareupdate -i -a but it hang. I'm guessing it's due to our proxy, and that we have to login to the proxy server in order for the system to continue fetching the updates.
Basically, what I'm asking is if there is a way to bypass this, i.e. a command to follow the systemupdate -i -a command which will log me into the proxy?
    Cheers,
    Nick

    Hi.
    I tried the command:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://ip.address.of.server:8088/
    softwareupdate -i -a
but all I get back is this:

  • ?Virus ?Malware in my Software Update

    Hi Guys,
Being a little cautious - I like to run Little Snitch on my MacBook to see the network connections each program makes.
I've just noticed Software Update trying to connect to:
    1) swscan.apple.com (to be expected)
    2) b.scorecardresearch.com (??why ?malware)
    3) ds.serving-sys.com (??why ?malware)
If I block access to these domains (2 & 3) using Little Snitch - the software update still appears to work normally -so they are obviously not 'required'.
Does anyone else's Software Update on 10.6.6 try and connect to these sites. Any further info anyone?

    Hi WZZZ
    - yes, I have been using OpenDNS at the router level for over 12 months now
    - yes, it still confirms that I'm using OpenDNS when I go to http://www.opendns.com/welcome/
I temporarily removed all rules for Software Update from Little Snitch and ran again to follow what was happening. Little Snitch requested permission in the following order:
    swscan.apple.com (accepted)
    swcdn.apple.com port 80 (accepted once)
which interestingly on Little Snitch appears as a connection to 'ds.serving-sys.com'
(didn't ask to specifically connect to 'ds.serving-sys.com')
(didn't ask for b.scorecardresearch this time)
doing a TraceRoute on swcdn.apple.com ends up after 16 hops as akamaitechnologies.com
    16 a204-2-160-16.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com (204.2.160.16) 307.173 ms 298.943 ms 306.822 ms
doing a TraceRoute on ds.serving-sys.com ALSO ends up after 16 hops as akamaitechnologies.com
    16 a204-2-160-16.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com (204.2.160.16) 261.007 ms 352.034 ms 307.811 ms
After some googling, it appears akamaitechnologies.com is a CDN which apple may use (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/350920).
Running Software Update while only allowing connections to swscan.apple.com, completes the check but shows 'All Software Is Up To Date'.
Running Software Update while allowing connections to swscan.apple.com + swcdn.apple.com (appearing as ds.serving-sys.com in Little Snitch connection history) shows that there are Garage Band Instrument updates (which would be expected as I told Garage Band to download the other available instruments).
Perhaps it is just a CDN used by Apple for users (after all, I am in Australia). It still bothers me that it shows up as ds.serving-sys.com - especially given the nature of that company.
Any other Australian Apple users seeing the same appear on there Little Snitch??
Any other ideas? Am I just being paranoid?
    Thanks again for input guys.

  • HT204380 I have 8 mb of broadband and am unable to use facetime as it loses the connection. The same happens with Viber. This seems to have happened since the last software update. Has anybody else had this problem.Regards, Kevin

I have 8 mbs of broadband but it does not seem to be adequate for using Facetime or Viber. I lose the connection via Facetime every few minutes and Viber doesn't work at all. It always says that the network connection is poor yet it's showing a full signal on the phone. It was a lot better before the last software update. has anybody else had this problem.

CS2 is very old and reached its "end of life" a while back.  So probably won't run on modern operating systems.  If you can still run it, you'll need to uninstall what you have and re-install with the download link below to activate it.

  • HT201601 Regarding software version update in iphone 5S

    Hi friends,
    1) I got to know it from one of my friend that after updating the software version, there are few problems faced by the user.
    2) Pls help suggest me that i should update my phone to iOS 8.1.2 or not.
    3) Can user easily update to this version and no problems are being faced thereafter.
    4) How much RAM will be used after this updation.

You can't.  Now you have let it start the software update there is nothing you can do.  You'll need to install it because you won't be able to go back.  Nothing you can do.

  • Looking for easy to follow guide for building a software updates process.

I am hoping that I can get some general guidance here. I have responsibility for sccm 2012 in our environment. I also have to do exchange 2010, all Cisco networking and a few other large platforms. Needless to say it gets to difficult to get on a task and
stay focused for long periods of time. I tend to just sort of keep things running and that's all I usually have time for.
We have sccm 2012 and it's mostly used for OSD right now. I have been tasked with developing and implementing a process for critical updates across the organization. We have one primary site and three secondaries with about 2500 machines. There is no history
of doing updates here other than a previous person who used to do them via WSUS and GPO. But that has not happened for well over a year now.  My problem is that I have no familiarity with doing updates via WSUS or sccm. So it's all pretty new to me. I
got Kent Agerlunds book and like his detailed approach and was hoping to just sort of adopt that process and tailor it to this environment.
I do have WSUS installed in our primary location and the SUP point on our primary and secondary servers. Things seem to be syncing fine. Now I need to try to put together a process that is easy to manage and works.   The biggest problem I find is that
given I have primary ownership for a wide range of technologies in a company that is not a small mom and pop organization, it is difficult to sit down and get the necessary time to hammer this out. Everytime I sit down to work on this I feel I have to try
to learn it all over again. For some reason, probably my lack of experience with even WSUS or patching in general, they way this is supposed to work is just not sinking in effectively.
Can someone recommend a decent guide that is easy to understand and easy to follow? I find so much material out there on this topic that it gets a bit overwhelming and I spend what time I do have available jumping from document to document and not really
getting a decent foundation of how this is supposed to work.
Also, if anyone cares to chime in how they would maybe approach this task if assigned to them. Imagine and environment that has no software updates in place and basically never did. Machines are very, very outdated. I have disabled automatic updates via
a GPO ( this was recommended in the Agerlund book).
Also, since this is basically a ground zero environment should I have two focuses? One, just getting everything up to date, and then a second process for keeping things up to date?
I realize this is a really broad info dump that I'm asking for, but I find just googling and trying to figure this out ends up with a scattered bunch of links that I don't really feel help me just get started on the right track.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
You just need to deploy software updates to specific collections periodically, such as Automatic deployment rules, keep things up to date. Then monitor the status to make sure deployments are successful.
The following KBs describe how to plan software updates.

  • How to stop update notifications for specific software updates

NOTE: I apologize in advance for the extreme length of my post & hope that someone will be willing to read it all & then be willing to help... Thanks!
I have been continually getting a Software Update notification for "Migration Assistant Update for Lion" (described "This update provides compatibility for migrating to a Mac running OS X Mavericks.") for quite a while now. IMHO, I consider my Mac knowledge/tech experience level (on a scale of 1-10, where 10 is a Mac Guru) to be about maybe 6 or 7 on average (&von a good day maybe an 8). That's assuming, of course, something like this can be quantified in that way. LOL! ;-) Anywho, I digress... Back to my question... As a general rule I don't immediately jump & install every single new update that comes out for all of my technology/electronics, no matter if Apple or Google tells me to do so. Obviously, I take all notices regarding security seriously & immediately research (unless it's forced upon me) it thoroughly before installing. This is ESPECIALLY true for apps in Apple's app store or Google Play Store, & I read a lot of the user reviews, as well as trusted tech gurus on the Web. Because NOT EVERY update is truly an improvement (mostly b/c of the failure to FULLY test them before releasing, more like unleashing, them to the public...Microsoft has mastered this FUBAR technique to absolute 'perfection', or something like that...haha!) OY, I'm so sorry for continually getting off topic. Okay, seriously now, here's what I want to know:  Is there any way to tell Apple I don't want to install one of their recommended updates & also to stop bugging me about it? I'm specifically referring to the one I mentioned above. Everything I found online about Mavericks made me want to stay VERY FAR AWAY from it. I could be wrong or found bad info, but I don't think so. Please let me know if I'm wrong, because I really want to make the best/most informed decision possible. Thanks!
That being said, today I received notifications about Apple's latest security update (2014-001), plus one for Safari.  I plan to install the security update for sure  & most likely the one for Safari (even though I stopped using it months ago & started using either Chrome, Opera or Firefox - I still haven't picked a fave, but use Chrome 90% of the time... I'm open to suggestions about these apps too...)... But, I don't want to mess with the "Migration Assistant" one.
I would really love some help from my fellow Mac users... I apologize for being long winded & will try to reign in that nagging writing flaw in future posts. Also, I apologize if I've missed something that's totally obvious & easily found on this or other forums/sites, but I really did try to find an answer before posting my question here...
Thanks Mucho to all of you who were able to read through my mini-novel (& not fall asleep in the process) & actually found my question at the end!! I would like to say "THANK YOU!!" in advance for any & all help y'all are willing to provide!!! :-D
Hope you have a FANTABULOUS day! (^_-) Sincerely, Care ;-)

Wow, now that I see how extremely long my post is on screen, I'm a wee bit embarrassed... I'm hoping someone will be willing to overlook this annoying factor & provide a suggestion... :-/ Signed w/shame, Care :-/

  • Deploying 100% of available software updates during a task sequence

    Hi,
Can somebody tell me if it actually possible to fully patch a computer via an SCCM 2012 task sequence using the install software updates task? If you have managed this can you shed some light on where I'm going wrong? For me, this behaviour is exactly
the same as ConfigMgr07... It simply doesn't work as it should.
I've integrated IE9 into my image and then added in all available updates via offline servicing. My task sequence installs windows, installs Adobe Reader, Office 2010 and Visio Viewer 2010. I then reboot the machine and perform all my patching via the Install
Software Updates task (with it set to 'all'), then reboot again. I do this four times in total.
It downloads and installs some 24 updates in the first instance. The second, third and fourth time it doesn't download or install anything.
When the task sequence completes and the OS first starts up there are 10 updates waiting to be installed (including updates for Adobe Reader and Flash that I have published to the WSUS server via SCUP). After installing those and rebooting there is a single
hotfix available (KB2533552). After installing that and rebooting, .NET4 Client Profile is waiting for me. After that there another nine more updates are available (mainly .NET4). Reboot, .NET4 Framework, reboot 5x .NET4 framework updates.
Why does the software update task not install 'all' updates when that is what I've selected? I have an automatic deployment rule targeted to my OSD and Unknown Computers collections. The rule is set to include Windows 7, Office 2010 and Adobe products with
    all update classification types.

I don't have a pause in my script and have not encountered any issues with the scan not finishing before the Software Update installation step. This is true for my B&C TSs which install in the region of 200 updates, including custom trusted publisher
updates from SCUP 2011. So I can't really comment on that side of things.
With regards to the patching side of things: I tried removing the multiple reboot patches from my Task Sequences by excluding them from the Auto Deployment Rules that target the same containers as the task sequences by adding -KBxxxxxx in the ADR. Unfortunately,
due to me having the multiple reboot updates targeted up 'update' collections that are populated by hardware/software DB queries, any PC that is performing a 'Refresh' TS ends up with the offending patches being targeted for install anyway and the TS fails.
For a long time I was just removing the client record from the DB and recreating it so that the offending updates would not be targeted to the client. Once the client has been refreshed, a hardware inventory is performed, the collections updated daily, the
multiple reboot patches are detected and are scheduled for install for the following Friday afternoon. This used to annoy me as I don't like 'incomplete' clients being delivered to users' desktop.
Recently though I've been toying with offline servicing. At first I attempted to integrate every available update but this just ended up killing things too. A number of the updates that can be installed via offline servicing have a .net 4 pre-requisite
but because .net 4 cannot be slipstreamed, the prerequisite is not satisfied, Windows setup fails and so does the TS. So using this method there is a chance you'll end up installing a patch that will kill your image... Still not ideal.
What I have settled on is slipstreaming specific patches into my installation media using dism and then running a B&C TS to update my image.
This is the batch file I use (you'll need to change to suit):
    Dism /mount-wim /wimfile:D:\SCCMContentSources\Applications\Microsoft\Windows\7\Professional\SP1\64-bit\Sources\install.wim /index:1 /mountdir:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline
    Dism /Image:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline /LogPath:SourceAddPackagex64.log /Add-Package /PackagePath:D:\HotFixIntegration\Hotfixes\64-bit\Updates
    Dism /Image:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline /LogPath:SourceAddPackagex64.log /Add-Package /PackagePath:D:\HotFixIntegration\Hotfixes\64-bit\IE
    Dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline /commit
The first line mounts the image.
The second line slipstreams the following .msu updates:
    kmdf-1.11, KB2526870, KB2529073, KB2545698, KB2561285, KB2574819-v2, KB2592687, KB2617858, KB2670838, KB2726535, KB2729094-v2, KB2786081, KB2834140-v2, KB2847311, KB2855844, KB2862330-v2, KB2862335, KB2864202, KB2868038, KB2876284, KB2883150, KB2884256,
    KB2965788, KB2984976, KB917607, KB971033, KB976399, KB977944, KB981750
These are essentially just the multiple reboot patches and their pre-requisites, IE11 prerequisites, and a few KBs that not published to WSUS.
The third line slipstreams IE11 from the IE11 .cab file.
The fourth line commits the changes to the install media.
After running a B&C TS from this modified installation source there are no updates available to freshly deployed images (until the next patch Tuesday!).
Unfortunately this a manual process as I need to check the multiple reboot KB article each time updates are released but it's the only way I can put out 100% patched PCs and have a PC Refresh task sequence that doesn't fail.

  • Windows Update Agent rebooting systems after Software Update deployment

I have a software update deployment that is configured to install software updates on a collection of servers at 4:00 AM with a suppressed reboot. The updates get deployed and no reboot occurs as expected.  Then ~8 hours later WUA starts up and the
    servers get rebooted.
There is a maintenance window applied to the collection from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM to allow the updates to install.
I've read a few forum and blog posts on this issue and have implemented some settings via GPO, but the reboots are still occurring.  The settings that were applied are referenced in the link below.

  • Software updates after Disaster Recovery

    Hey..
i hope someone can help me. After a SAN failure we had to reinstall/recover our SCCM 2012 SP1 (most roles on one machine, there are 2 SUP Roles - primary SUP is on a remote DMZ Server and secondary SUP is on the SCCM itself).
I had the Default SCCM but no Fileservice Backup. The Database was not affected.
So i reinstalled the Server from Scratch, configured the prereqs  like iis, wsus wds etc. and started the revovery wizard. Everything went fine and the restore was successful. Because of the missing Fileservice Backup i redistributed all content back
to the DP. So now nearly everything is working again but the software update are driving me crazy.
Even if i create a new update package and deployment the Update does not arrive on the client. To get our SCEP Clients up2date i created an auto approval rule for scep definitions on the wsus and this is working. So only Updates deployed through sccm are
    not working.
The Client sees the Update as "missing" in UpdateStore.log but never starts downloading or asking for a location. The UpdateDeployment.log says "no service window" but the deployment is set to ignore maintenace window. I can not find
    any other importand errors.
In CCM_Messaging.log there is a "WINHTTP_CALLBACK_STATUS_FLAG_CERT_CN_INVALID" message but IIS Logs on the Server says the 2nd attempt after the error is OK and as described before everything else is working.
    Here are some logs:
    https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=6B65DBF2183A9C27!173&authkey=!ANDa-M-KDSNGez8
My last idea is to reinstall all Update related components but i am not sure if this will help.
    regards
    Philipp

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?
Since no one has answer this post, I recommend opening  a support case with CSS as they can work with you to solve this problem.

  • SCCM Software Update's / ADR questions

    Hello Technet/SCCM community,
after much scratching of the ol' noggin and lots of internet searches I have been left with a handful of questions regarding SCCM 2012 SP1 and its Software Update Point functionality with emphasis on Automatic Deployment Rules.
1.When creating an ADR if one ADR's updates are the same as another ADR's updates how can we avoid storing/downloading duplicates? Can I store the updates in the same folder and will SCCM be smart enough to share the updates rather than having two copies?
note: one way around the above would be to separate updates into different ADR's, here is my issue with this method: lets say I have one ADR for Win7 updates and one for Office2013/Silverlight etc. Now Im deploying multiple packages to machines causes a
larger update window and possible multiple restarts. So lets say I suppress the restarts, well when users get around to it they will still see the updates being applied and per our policy we have one window to push these and when we wander from the norm users
minds break. i.e. I don't want multiple ADR's deployed to the machines a month and I do not want to suppress restarts.
    2. Is there no way to only download the metadata of these updates? Currently updates for my environment are eating up 80 gigs of hard drive space. 40 gigs to the download location which then gets duplicated to the content library which sets me up for my
next question: Why are these updates in both locations essentially doubling the HD space you need for updates. My content library grows gig for gig with my SUP updates store.
    3. Scenario: I deploy updates month 1, 100 updates are downloaded and deployed and update group entry is created. Next month I deploy again this time 50 updates are downloaded and deployed, update group 2 created. Questions: Now if I delete update group
1 and do not have a date released or revised rule will the next deploy grab update group 1's updates again? In other words should I always leave the update groups in SCCM so it knows what updates have been deployed and wont download those updates again. And
finally if I should leave the update groups can I still delete the updates from the folder freeing up space but still allowing SCCM to know whats been deployed?
    4. Does anyone have an essential Windows 7 workstation updates ADR build they can share. For Workstations I like to deploy everything they need in one ADR, Office 2013, Silverlight, SCEP, and WIN7. So far Ive never come close to the 1000 limit. Server ADR's
    are a different story.

I appreciate your clarification of an ADR, I understand what it does and doesn't do, I'm simply using the term ADR to cover the subjects I'm discussing.
This piece of your response answers my questions in full and is very helpful.
"You can use the "Period of time for which all pending deployments with deadline in this time will also
be installed" setting on the Software Updates tab to group deployments together that have slightly different deadline times; however, Office 2013 and SCEP updates generally don't require a reboot."
I had previously set the deadline/restart window to "as soon as possible", I will utilize
the above to resolve my issues with my ADR deployments and I will also use the below for how I group updates.
"I generally configure an ADR for all workstation OS updates, one for Office, one for Server updates,
and one for SCEP. These all reference the exact same update package which I then change on a periodic basis like every 6-12 months. I also create new update groups month for each of these (except SCEP defs)."
    Thanks great stuff Jason:)
