Rumor: Nokia to reveal new high end smartphone soon

Forbes is reporting from anonymous source that Nokia is going to announce a new high end smartphone at the start of MWC (2/27).  No word if it's a Windows Phone device or not.
Speculation on some of the posts throughout the interwebs is that it might be the 801 running Belle

John,
Neither is an ideal machine. 64MB VRAM (and other video card factors) is not sufficient to run all Photoshop features. But the G5 may also need a video card upgrade (check Adobe's list of appropriate cards), which may or not be practical. And more and more apps are being developed for Intel only, so you are buying dated technology either way.
I'd be looking into a more capable Intel machine, either second-hand, refurbished, or as a lease (if for business).

  • Original Mac Pro vs. New High End iMac

I need some advice on whether to upgrade my system, based on the new iMacs just released. Here is what I currently own:
Mac Pro with two Intel 2.66 dual-core processors
    (Early 2007 edition)
    16x SuperDrive
    6 GB of RAM
    1 TB HD
ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512 MB)
    23" Apple Cinema Display
I'm thinking of selling all of that and buying the new high-end 27" iMac...
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB of memory (I'd upgrade it to 8 GB)
    2 TB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card
    27" display (included)
I've done the research and I would roughly break even. Cost is not a concern. The following factors are under consideration...
What is the performance difference between the 4 cores I have in the 2.66 Xeon vs the 4 cores in the Core i5?
My X1900 graphics card is not supported under Snow Leopard's OpenCL. The new HD 4850 would be.
I'd like to have the larger display (27" vs. 23") and the built-in video camera for iChat video conferencing.
I am not a professional user. I consider myself a high-end consumer user, primarily doing HD video editing with iMovie, some video encoding with Handbrake, and "prosumer" work with RAW files in Aperture. The rest is basic use- such as email, internet, etc.
I would love to have some objective advice on this decision!
    Thanks....

If performance of the current system is acceptable, I would keep it and use it as long as possible. You have the capability to do things like replace the display (with a new one of your choosing), upgrade the video card, and add additional internal SATA drives. Having additional internal storage at SATA speed, and using separate drives to store OS/apps and user data, will increase your system's productivity.
When performance of your Mac Pro is no longer acceptable, get a new Mac Pro.

  • Migrate the Production APPS and DB to New High End Server

    Hi,
    current Low end server:
Single Node Installation: DB & APPS
    Version: 12.1.1 (11.1.0.7)
Operating System: Redhat Linux 5.4 (x86-64)
We have bought new high end machine with more cpu, RAM anad More Hard Disks.
We are going to move everything from current low end server to new high end server.
    1. Install Linux 64 bit on New High End Server with required RPMS, Kernel Parameters, User Limits etc etc
    2. Make partitions on this server as same as current server ( Mount Points should be same as current server)
    3. Make users and groups and assign proper permissions on partitions
    4. Maintain same hostname and IP Address in Target Server
    5. Run Preclone in both DB Tier and Apps Tier in Source Server
    6. Take backup of current server and copy it to Target Server
    7. Shutdown the Source Server
    8. Run config clone on Target Server
    9. Start the Services in Target Server, after clonining, Make sure that all services are running including concurrent managers
    10. Configure Printers at OS Level with same in Oracle Applications Printers Screen
    12. Copy the Backup scripts from source to target server
    13. If tape drive is configured at current server, configure it new Server as well.
Please let me know, if i miss anything....
    thanks in advance......

    Hi oraDBA2,
It's been long time, how are you doing?
Your steps are correct and I would say there is nothing missing. Please note the mount points on the target node(s) do not have to follow the same naming you have on the source node as you are going to run postclone on the target server(s). However, keeping it the same would make it more straightforward. As long as you have all pre-req. OS packages and software installed and you are going to keep the same hostname/domainname as well as IP Address, you should be good.
An alternative would be restoring the files on the target node(s) without running preclone/postclone but this requires relinking as per the following documents.
Note: 356878.1 - How to relink the whole Applications 11i Installation
Note: 131321.1 - How to Relink Oracle Database Software on UNIX
Note: 407055.1 - Process To Upgrade the Operating System and Oracle Database Server
Since Rapid Clone is your option (which I personally prefer) you can skip this part as relinking will be done by Rapid Clone, so you do not have to worry about it.
    Good luck!
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • What will the new high end 15" Retina Macbook Pro be like for gaming?

With Nvidia Geforce GT 750M 2GB GDDR5, what kind of performance can I expect? I must stress that this is not my main concern, but I would like to know that in my down time I can enjoy myself and not got worried about frame rates etc.  So what sort of standards for the "average" game will I see? I will be using Windows 7 via bootcamp.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Read some benchmarks in the Internet > http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-750M.90245.0.html They will tell you how games would work with this GPU, but note that this may change depending on your screen resolution, GPU drivers...
In general, you shouldn't have any problem with that GPU to run games in medium-high settings. Be careful with the MacBook temperature, as it may get hot quickly

I was however cautioned to pay the disputed amount or I would have to deal with collections - BRING IT!!!  As soon as I can find an attractive bundle with COMCAST I'll cancel Verizon - it's the worst decision I' every made.

  • New high end MBP when connected to 27" monitor gaming has a pulse type lag that is unrelated to FPS. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

    Please help!

    Hi,
thanks very much for taking an interest and sharing your experiences. I'm glad your problem seems to have been resolved.
For me, none of the tricks you mention really solve the problem. As far as I understand, all of them come down to forcing the macbook pro to use the nvidia graphics (instead of integrated graphics) to run the monitor. When I do this, the amount of flickering is reduced dramatically, but it's still there - instead of constant flickers, I get them usually a couple times a minute, sometimes a few minutes in between. While that's an improvement, it's still very annoying, and distracts from doing work or watching movies.
Again, the MPB 13 doesn't have this problem in any circumstance.
I've posted a little video illustrating this: http://picasaweb.google.com/kevinjorissenpdx/ComputerProblems20101008?authkey=Gv1sRgCPad7e7M3qas-QE# and choose the last file.
You'll see the screen flicker like crazy, then I press shift-control-eject, which puts the screen to sleep, then I wake it up again - the mbp now knows it has to be on nvidia just as after you rebooted - and in the remaining minute or so, you can see it flicker twice (this is boring to wait for ;)), of course it did it again right after I switched off the camera . This is a 'best case' ; usually, the disturbances come every 15-20 seconds. I don't know why it varies.
if BSteely or anyone else has a way of submitting my reports to Apple, please go ahead. I'd like to finally get my monitor working right ...
(As an aside, I've noticed that 'Spaces' (with 4 desktops enabled, as is standard) and the external monitor don't work together smoothly & seem to get confused.)

  • Is Nokia ready for high end market?

It is the time of smartphones.  With the introduction of 3G, distance and speed are not a barrier at all.  Prediction is that, we will see a shift from laptop to smartphones, something we experienced a few years ago when laptop replaced desktops. So, is Nokia really ready for this competitve market?  I believe they are still not ready looking at the way they support N series and E series.
My horror story started the day I purchased my N96, exactly 4 months back.   I have been watching the developments of N95 and wanted to own one.  Nokia released N96 by the time I made my decision.  The problem started when I started seeing low memory errors.  To my surprise, I noticed that Nokia uses phone memory for messages and N-gauge.  Configuring "mass memory" as the storage for messages didn't solve the problem completely as it failed to move all messagesI searched for some file explorer kind of applications to explore and clean phone memory.  I wish if Nokia had one.  The solution given to me by Nokia support was to reset the phone.  And, that cleared all data from my phone.  So, here are a list of my pain points
    - Does Nokia expect us to reset phone for every small issues.  Note that, these are not just phones, but smart phones.  More than contacts, I have my personal data, bookmarks, configurations, rss feeds, video feeds, radio stations, podcasts, GPS locations, blogging tools, applications etc. installed.  Getting back the phone in the same state will take days after a hard reset.  Do I agree if my laptop service center tells me that they have to format my harddisk everytime I take my laptop for servicing? Nokia Care's standard answer is to update the firmware (though I have the latest firmware) and reset the phone for any issues.  I only wish if Nokia trained their technicians to handle smartphones.
    - N96 reboots when I use GPS 50% of the times (when you use it for longer duration either with google map or Nokia map or sports tracker)
    - Phone hangs when you move from wifi hotspot to other places while wifi scan is going on (I don't see this issue after upgrading to 12.043)
    - There is no way to restart the phone when the phone hangs.  You have to take out the battery and put it back.
    - I get disconnected frequently when I'm on long calls.  Though I can blame my network provider, I know its not completely because of them.  My N70 doesn't have this problem.
    - I have been having a long battle with Nokia support and bluetooth issues.  I tried to use Motorola HT820 headset with this phone.  Phone hangs or reboots 90% time when I turn on the headset.  Nokia's standard answer is that Motorola HT820 is not a supported accessory.  I agree, but is it acceptable if phone reboots or hangs when I tried to use an unsupported accessory?  Only way to reboot the phone when it hangs is to remove the battery and place it back.  Why can't they give a reset switch hidden somewhere if they can't write bugfree code (and nonone can).  I have been doing this for the last one month while trying to convince Nokia that they have a problem with their bluetooth stack. I can prove that it happens only with A2DP profile.  I have been using a plantronics bluetooth headset without any problem.  I'm also using HT820 with my Nokia N70 which supports only HSP profile. Unfortunately, N96 doesn't provide an option to choose what profile you want to use when you pair a bluetooth headset.  I could have listened to music from my laptop (A2DP) while the headset is connected with phone (HSP), and I don't miss any calls.  I'm pretty sure it is a bug in their bluetooth stack; only if I could talk to one of their developers and explain the problem.
    - You know the commotion Nokia created when they removed VoIP stack from N96.  Thanks to Fring, I use VoIP and skype with N96 today.
    - The NetWork stack is so cumbursome.  Each applications have to define their own access points and rights.  Why can't it be in the platform level? Just imagin you doing this on your laptop for each of the applications.
    - Its better not to talk about the battery.  It comes for less than a day for me.  But, you can always blaim the usage.
How do we make Nokia listen to issues?  Do they have any customer feedback forum (please, not through the Nokia Care centers)?  I wish if they improve, after all, I still love my phone (Yes, I paid a good amount for this phone)

    N96, FW: 12.043

    Hi Jaimon,
I'm with you - I've had my N96 nearly six months and am VERY disappointed.
I just bought a Parrot Party Bluetooth speaker. A GREAT little unit. Needless to say, the implementation of A2DP leaves a LOT to be desired on the N96. Basically, it's like listening to a CD that skips every 10 seconds. The N96 cannot keep up the stream of data fast enough. It's VERY annoying.
I checked to make sure no other apps were running to make sure it wasn't something else running that was causing the problem, but no, it's rubbish (I have firmware 12.043). Other people in my office can connect their Blackberries etc... no problem. Plays back beautifully, but my N96? Piece of garbage.
Nokia have a LOT to answer for! Like you say, a phone that costs more than a laptop and this is the level of service we get. I have written TWICE via their online customer service form, and on each occasion received an email saying I can expect a response in 72 hours. I've never received ANYTHING!
Also, I had a Plantronics headset - Explorer 340. A nice headset. Same problems as mentioned elsewhere, would intermittently be disconnected and reconnected - very annoying. Last week, it paired but would not connect. Plantronics' support was wonderful! So efficient. They're exchanging the unit with a newer model (brand new) because they cannot replace the old model. Maybe that will work better. Meanwhile, because I NEED a headset for driving (and the supplied stereo headset is pathetic - cable too short, microphone ends up around your waist (USELESS!)) I bought (*gasp*) a Nokia BH-101. Paired fine with the N96 (as one would EXPECT), but the headset itself is lousy - such a poor design. I challenge anyone to make it fit in their ear comfortably enough as to be able to HEAR the bloody thing while driving. I have to keep one hand on it to keep it in my ear. USELESS NOKIA!
What is it WITH this company?! Why have they lost the plot?!??!

You could try disabling hardware acceleration. If you are unable to access the setting in Options > Advanced > General, you could change the setting for "layers.acceleration.disabled" to true in the prefs.js file in the profile.

Anyone know the TDP of this board?
In a comparison it looks practically identical to the 125W G46-970a.  Except the G46 has a sound optical out--the features list says the Gamer board doesn't--and the board pics confirm that.  Board looks to have better software than the G46--possibly better sound output, maybe.

  • Request: Small high-end luxury smartphone

I am an avid supporter of Windows Phone, and Lumia line in particular... Switched from Titan II. However, my wife wants an iPhone, she currently owns a Lumia 900. She keeps talking about it because the 920 is too big and heavy. She really wants a slim and speak phone with high-end luxury features.
For me, being 6'2", the 920 size work great...feels substantial and sturdy. In my hands, I feel like I'm going to break the diminutive iPhone.
I think many people with less monstrous hands would prefer an iPhone sized Windows Phone with the high end luxury of the Lumia 920.
I hope the Nokia officials follow this advice.

  • Time to upgrade hsdpa to 21mbps on high ends

htc and samsung now produces high end phones with 21mbps hsdpa capability so i think nokia should upgrade next symbian^3 phone with hsdpa 21mbps downlink and 5mbps hsupa uplink capability rather than usual 10mbps hsdpa and 2mbps hsupa

I currently have a Droid Global 2 and while I enjoy the expanded features of a smartphone, I miss my Env2 terribly for one main reason :  The keyboard was the best!.   The Droid Global 2's slide-out keyboard lacks dedicated number keys and is a bit cramped compared to the Env, but much faster/accurate than an iPhone.
I will be upgrading to the DROID 3 as it now has dedicated number keys and a larger screen.
While I really wanted an iPhone, the lack of a physical keyboard was the dealbreaker.  I test drove a friends phone and made so many errors in email, texting, dialing #s that I knew it wasn't going to be acceptable for me.  It took forever to do basic texting...and I have very small hands/fingers!   Can't imagine how big 'man hands' would handle the iPhone.
If keyboard accuracy/'speed is not a big deal the and iPhone will work for you.  The iPhone is much lighter as it doesn't have a physical keyboard....some people just have to have Apple regardless.
    Good luck on the Apple

    Hello,
It's time to upgrade to a new phone for both me and the wife, she needs a new phone now as her LG env3 is acting up.  I'm a looong time Apple user, and of course the Apple iphone is a natural to pick, however It'll cost $350 for 2 when we use the last $50 credit for new/every 2.  The new Droid 3 looks very interesting and we can get 2 for $149 for both with the credit and the BOGO sale going on.
So which should we get, mainly use the phone for talk, texting and will of course check emails, etc once we get a smart phone.  The Env3's we have now are good at texting with the keyboard and of course good for talking.
If we go for the Apple, I could get her the iphone 4 for her and I can wait for the iphone 5 if it's actually coming out this year.

  • My iPod Touch is damaging my high-end earphones. What should I do

3 weeks ago, my Sennheiser CX-300 started to acting weirdly on the right channel. With each listening period passing by, the volume was going lower and lower, till to the point that this channel was barely audible. I tested them with different sources and I faced the fact that this problem couldn't be undone. Even if I threated them carefully during a whole year, I could just say now that they are completely dead, due to some sort of driver failure.
So, I rushed out to buy a new set on earphone and I decided to pick a higher end one, a brand new pair of Shure E4C. God I was happy, having finally sound in both of my ears. I listened to them during a 2 hours period. When I was over, I folded them back in the carrying case.
The day after, after plugging them back in my ipod, I just wanted to cry : the left channel was inaudible to a point that I needed to boost the sound to the maximum in order to ear something in the left channel. I tested them back in different sources and the same thing happened. After 3 hours of testing on different sources, I thought they were completely damaged.
So , this morning, I tested them back in my macbook and, to my suprise, they are working 100% like the first time I tried them.
Now, I'm thinking, could my ipod have some sort of voltage problem that could do such irreversible damage to an high-end earphone ? I just can't find another explanation.
Should I go to the genius bar or ask for a repair online ? I just don't know how to prove this awkward problem to a genius at the bar.
I won't be plugging my shures in this cursed ipod , that's for sure !!!! I don't want to lose $200 + over this.
    Please, help me.

I don't think it is damaging your headphones (including the CX-300), I think the headphone jack on your Touch is damaged. Headphones don't heal so if the Shure E4Cs are working on your macbook they are in working order.
Take your Touch and headphones to the Apple Store and make a Genius Bar appointment.
