Run 10.5 Leopard on your Beiges!

Hi,
Just a heads-up that if anyone has upgraded their Beige G3 with a G4 processor that it is possible to run 10.5.8 on it.
I can post more details if anyone is interested... there was a full how-to article I wrote on www.macmod.com - but that's currently missing in action...

Hi,
I've found the article (minus pictures) at:
http://replay.waybackmachine.org/20090422225844/http://www.macmod.com/software-m ods/mac-os/1571-leopard-on-pre-pci
In summary the easitest way of doing this is (with another mac):
* Install a fresh copy of 10.5.8 onto the Beige hard drive via another machine
* Install Xpostacto extensions to the installation
* Then also add specific extensions back-in - which Xpostfacto doesn't provide (see article - I can e-mail these):
* AppleCuda.kext (handles ADB mouse and power management function and sound)
* AppleGossamer.kext (PlatformExpert for Beige G3, B&W and Yikes! G4 - i.e. the platform driver)
* AppleHeathrow.kext (driver for the Heathrow chip on Beige G3 which handles IDE/ATA)
* AppleGracklePCI.kext (driver for the Grackle chip Beige G3/B&W which handles memory management and IDE/ATA and PCI slots)
* HeathrowATA.kext (driver for the ATA controller section of Heathrow chip)
* CMD646ATA.kext (driver for the ATA controller on the B&W)
If you only have a Beige G3 then you will need to follow the instructions on this forum: http://forum.macsales.com/viewtopic.php?t=3069
*Please note that this will also work all the way back to a PowerMac 8500 (with a G4 upgrade installed).*

  • My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, runs fine under Lion.

My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, even though it was originally written for Snow Leopard.  It runs fine on my Dev machine under Lion. But when I test it on my Snow Leopard Mac Mini the app starts but the window does not appear. Going to file, new window does nothing. My depolyment target is set to 10.6. Is there something I did to make my app lose Snow Leopard compatiblty?

Does your application use features only available in Lion?  Are you getting any console logs?

Well Lion does not support power PC applications.  They only way is to upgrade the application, or if your have SL disks, reinstall SL.

then had to find out (same as with this issue) that I presently have other software that will not run on Maverics.
You could create a clone of your drive with all your current software, so you could continue to work with your Snowleopard software by booting from the clone, and upgrade your main system to Mavericks, if your computer supports Mavericks.    This way, you could have both, if the new features of Mavericks are interesting to you -  e.g-, iCloud syncing of multiple Macs, new sharing features, and for GarageBand automatic drummers and arpeggiators.

  • My imac is currently running on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 How do I upgrade to install Mountain Lion?

My imac is currently running on Snow Leopard 10.6.3.  How do I install Mountain Lion?

Update your 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 using the :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=answerlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.apple .com%2Fkb%2FDL1399&answerid=16777216&src=support_site.downloads.search
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then make sure you meet the requirements for Mt Lion:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Now that being said, the 2GB RAM requirement will not leave you with a smoothly running system. Max out your RAM that your system can handle (more than 8 GB would be up to you) . Older Applications may no longer supported. No Power PC apps are supported past !0.6.8. Many other Apps will need to be updated or upgraded.

  • Running Tiger and Leopard togther?

I have a question and I'm not sure where to post it.
I am currently running 10.5.5 Leopard, but will be using a piece of software that requires Tiger. Is it possible to "live" partition my hard drive into a third partition (Leopard is #1, Windows via bootcamp is #2)and then change the startup disk mode to select Tiger with the install disks in the DVD (I have a legit copy...from my apple purchase)
Do I loose info? Does it ruin firmware settings for video/graphics cards, etc.?
If, instead, I create an external boot drive of Tiger, will I potentially mess up my computer with firmware stuff, etc...and ruin my Leopard installation when my computer starts in Tiger or restarts in Leopard?
I am confused. Does the firmware and other stuff get loaded each time OSX starts?
Is there another way to achieve my goal? Tiger running concurrently with Leopard but WITH LEOPARD INSTALLED IN THE MACHINE FIRST. This, after Google searches, seems to be important. Most installs describe Tiger being installed on the internal drive FIRST and Leopard installed on an external bootable drive.
    Thanks for an response.

OK, now I think I've got it...and I thank you for your patience.
I have leopard on osx disk
I have bootcamp partition already on the disk with Windows
I must start disk utility, select my osx disk and add a partition by clicking the add or "+" button.
Adjust the size I wish to make each partition size.
    Apply.
    Now, final questions:
    Why the mention of bootcamp...
because Apple doesn't recommend doing what you are about to do if the bootcamp partition is present.
is it just to allow the "option" key startup when booting?
No. that option is always there and has nothing to do with bootcamp.
    or live partitioning?
no. this has nothing to do with bootcamp either.
Can I resize my windows, bootcamp partition, before I make these adjustments and additions for Tiger?
no. if you want to resize it you have to either use 3rd party software like ipartition or delete the bootcamp partition completely using bootcamp assistant and create a bigger one after that. This will of course wipe your windows installation so you'd have to reinstall windows if you do this.
I also understand that creating this partition may be permanent until I reformat a hard drive.
    yes.
One last comment. make sure you have plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of free space when you do the partitioning. else the partitioning process will fail.
Thanks again for you help. And yes, my imac originally came shipped with Tiger disks and OS installed.

  • Our imac runs osx snow leopard but it cant find the hard drive or it is corrupt, is it possible to reboot it with osx lion?

our imac recently displayed the white screen and flashing file icon with a question mark on it, it runs osx snow leopard but i dont have the installation disc, can i reboot it off the osx lion disc? or do i need to buy the snow leopard disc and reboot it off that first.  thanks for your help in advance!

Yes you can. If the iMac meets the system requirements for Lion then you can boot it off the Lion disc (which is actually a USB drive, unless you download and burn it yourself).

  • Running OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I want to upgrade to OS X Lion, do I have to first update to Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac running OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I want to upgrade to OS X Lion, do I have to first update to Snow Leopard? And is it worth upgrading to Lion or should I wait some time?
    Thanks for your time!
    -JX

Yes you must first update to Snow Leopard if you plan on installing Lion. Apple is very clear about that in the Lion's Tech Spec's that say:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
I like Lion quite a bit and have been using it for several months now. I've found it pretty stable, of course I don't use all of it's features however I really like the additional swipe features however you need a Magic TrackPad to take full advantage of those. However other features like Launchpad I don't have any really appreciation for because I've used OS X for several years now. However if someone is considering their first Mac after using an iPhone, iPad or other IOS device they would appreciate Launchpad.

  • Message: You will run out of storage when your downgrade takes effect

In my email, I received a message today with the subject
You will run out of storage when your downgrade takes effect
I looked in my account and don't see anywhere where I've set it to downgrade. It's still set at the correct level. I checked the credit card to make sure it hadn't expired.
Any thoughts of what else I could check?
    Here's the email:
As requested, your iCloud storage will be downgraded to 5 GB on 02/27/2015. However, you are currently using 6 GB.
Unless you take action before your downgrade takes effect, backups to iCloud will stop, and apps will no longer be able to save documents to iCloud. You can either free up storage or cancel your downgrade to keep your current storage plan for another year.
To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, you can cancel your downgrade by selecting a different storage plan:
    1.
On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud
    2.
    Tap Account.
    3.
Tap your current plan, then choose from the options presented
For more information on managing your iCloud storage, please read this Learn how to manage your iCloud storage >.
    The iCloud Team

Sounds to me like you're not the original owner of the device.
Did you buy it secondhand? From where?

After a power failure while iPhoto was running, I get the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"  and iPhoto will not open???? held down the option and the command and tried to run what was ticked off and it just sits there with a spinning wheel and does nothing, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?

, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?
You could, but the error message is indicating that your iPhoto library needs repairing.
Check, if iPhoto will run, if you launch it on a new library. Hold down the alt/option key, while you launch iPhoto. Select to create a new library from the panel that will show. Can you create a new library? If yes, try again to fix the library. Which options have you tried from the Library First Aid panel, when you launched iPhoto with the option and command key held down?
If you have not tried "Rebuild"; do that next. But be sure to make a backup of your iPhoto library, before you try this.

  • Pages 4.2 update doesn't run with Snow Leopard

I keep both Montain Lion and Snow Leopard on the same computer, different partitions. After upgrading Pages this week, it no longer runs under Snow Leopard.  The icon changes and a launch message says I can't use this version with Snow Leopard. It looks like this is true of all the iWorks apps. This is the first time I recall the iWorks suite not being backwards compatible.
My advice is to keep a backup copy or older iWorks releases if you need to run Snow Leopard. The App store only has the Mountain Lion version so I can't just download the SnowLeopard compatible version.

The same exact thing happened to me. I have a thread on this same issue but no one has responded. Did you find a way around this?

  • Lightroom 5 doesn't run on Snow Leopard

I'm sure this is well know amongst readers here but I had no idea until after I purchased and tried to install. Now waiting for a refund. How did I miss this? I've used Lightroom for over 4 years. I read all the reviews of the beta and now the release of Lightroom 5. Somehow I failed to notice that the program won't run on Snow Leopard on the Mac. Amazing! I haven't wanted to upgrade my Mac OS for multiple reasons. Now I'm on a dead end road with Lightroom. I'll have to figure that out. My oversight but I wish that Adobe and the reviewers had made this fact more obvious. Maybe they did. I'm disappointed.

There’s usually a System Requirements section on the LR purchase pages.
Trying out the beta and trying out LR in Trial mode are the ways to avoid such issues.

  • Do I need to run pc clean before downloading your software

    clean scan report
What do you mean by this?  What results are you looking for?  List some of the results you would see in the report.
Are you saying you want to check the hd for problems?
    Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility.  On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
    Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid  Tab.
    Click on verify.
Hopefully your disk will verify.  If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

  • FYI: New version of Disk Warrior seems to hang when run with Snow Leopard

FYI: It seems that the new version of Disk Warrior hangs when run in Snow Leopard

I have been using DW 4.2 on 10.5.8 and the speed-up was the first thing I noted, too, so it isn't just SL.
Now if it would only 'come up for air' and respond to input to move window (so I can put it where I can see it if needed) I'd like that.
There is a 23 page review of Snow Leopard on Ars. On page 22:
People sometimes ask what, exactly, is wrong with HFS+.
Aside from its obvious lack of the features just listed, HFS+ is limited in many ways by its dated design, which is based on HFS, *a twenty-five year-old file system.*
To give just one example, the centrally located Catalog File, which must be updated for each change to the file system's structure, is a frequent and inevitable source of contention. Modern file systems usually spread their metadata around, both for robustness (multiple copies are often kept in separate locations on the disk) and to allow for better concurrency.
Practically speaking, think about those times when you run Disk Utility on an HFS+ volume and it finds (and hopefully repairs) a bunch of errors. *That's bad, okay?* +*That's something that should not happen*+ with a modern, thoroughly checksummed, always-consistent-on-disk file system unless there are hardware problems (and a ZFS storage pool can actually deal with that as well). And yet it happens all the time with HFS+ disks in Mac OS X when various bits of metadata to get corrupted or become out of date.
Apple gets by year after year, tacking new features onto HFS+ with duct tape and a prayer, but at a certain point there simply has to be a successor—whether it's ZFS, a home-grown Apple file system, or something else entirely. My fingers are crossed for Mac OS X 10.7.
If Disk Utility was reliable in mapping out weak sectors (it is not) and report/log errors. But it doesn't and I trust my data to other file systems when possible. We've come to expect and depend on 3rd party utilities and that Apple First Aid doesn't fix every possible error.
Scanning one drive for errors can take a long time. Maybe it needs to be done, maybe in the background. With 2TB drives it gets worse. Spending hours to scan for errors??? I've set TechTool Pro to concurrently scan anywhere from one to a dozen volumes at once.
An ounce of prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure.
