Run dos command that starts program and program stay open

I'm running the following code,
string m_file= "c:\program\program.exe" ;// runs a program
Process myProcess = new Process();
myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = @programtextBox.Text.Trim();
myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments = m_file;
String m_arguments = myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments.ToString().Trim();
myProcess.Start();
It works fine except I need the program to stay open that this command starts. But it closes while it's in the process of starting.

I had a mistake in what I posted in my code. Here it is again with corrections, and more detail.
string m_run= "c:\my programs\adobe\photoshope.exe" //This is saved in the program and can be set to any program the user wants to use. it's saved in the programtextBox.Text noted eailer, which is saved to the hard drive.
string m_file= "c:\file\anypicture.jpg" ;// picture that is selected in the interface.
Process myProcess = new Process();
myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = m_run;
myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments = m_file;
String m_arguments = myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments.ToString().Trim();
myProcess.Start();
This is a windows form program.
It looks to me like you're either redacting or modifying your actual code before posting.  I could be wrong about that, but I'm pretty sure because:
If you were calling Process.Start() against program files/adobe/photoshope.exe I believe that you'd get a Win32 Exception since I don't think that file exists in any photoshop installation.
I sincerely doubt that you're actually working with "file/anypicture.jpg."
I'm confused by the declaration of m_arguments which is never used.  I assume it is in fact used somewhere in your code.
Finally, you have stated that the program to open files with is pre-defined, so I suspect that data is actually being pulled from a variable instead of from a hard string as in your "example."
If that's the case then you might as well go shoot yourself in the foot, since that would do exactly as much good as asking for help with broken code and then posting pseudo-code instead of what doesn't work.  It's like telling an auto mechanic your
car dies every time you hit 22 miles per hour, while delivering your bicycle for service.

  • Problem while running dos command from java program

    Dear friends,
    I need to terminate a running jar file from my java program which is running in the windows os.
    For that i have an dos command to find process id of java program and kill by using tskill command.
    Command to find process id is,
    wmic /output:ProcessList.txt process where "name='java.exe'" get commandline,processid
    This command gives the ProcessList.txt file and it contains the processid. I have to read this file to find the processid.
    when i execute this command in dos prompt, it gives the processid in the ProcessList.txt file. But when i execute the same command in java program it keeps running mode only.
    Code to run this command is,
    public class KillProcess {
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              KillProcess kProcess = new KillProcess();
              kProcess.getRunningProcess();
              kProcess = new KillProcess();
              kProcess.readProcessFile();
         public void getRunningProcess() {
              String cmd = "wmic /output:ProcessList.txt process where \"name='java.exe'\" get commandline,processid";
              try {
                   Runtime run = Runtime.getRuntime();
                   Process process = run.exec(cmd);
                   int i = process.waitFor();
                   String s = null;
                   if(i==0) {
                        BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new
                               InputStreamReader(process.getInputStream()));
                        while ((s = stdInput.readLine()) != null) {
                         System.out.println("--> "+s);
                   } else {
                        BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new
                               InputStreamReader(process.getErrorStream()));
                        while ((s = stdError.readLine()) != null) {
                         System.out.println("====> "+ s);
                   System.out.println("Running process End....");
              } catch(Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
         public String readProcessFile() {
              System.out.println("Read Process File...");
              File file = null;
              FileInputStream fis = null;
              BufferedReader br = null;
              String pixieLoc = "";
              try {
                   file = new File("ProcessList.txt");
                   if (file.exists() && file.length() > 0) {
                        fis = new FileInputStream(file);
                        br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fis, "UTF-16"));
                        String line;
                        while((line = br.readLine()) != null)  {
                             System.out.println(line);
                   } else {
                        System.out.println("No such file");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              return pixieLoc;
    }     when i remove the process.waitFor(), then while reading the ProcessList.txt file, it says "No such file".
    if i give process.waitFor(), then it's in running mode and program is not completed.
    Colud anyone please tell me how to handle this situation?
    or Is there anyother way to kill the one running process in windows from java program?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sathish

                Process proc = rt.exec(cmd);
                System.out.println("Executing.......");
                // any error message?
                StreamGobbler errorGobbler = new

                System.out.println("ExitValue: " + exitVal);
            } catch (Throwable t)
                t.printStackTrace();
    }when i execute the above code, i got output as,
    Execing cmd.exe /C wmic process where "name='java.exe'" get commandline,processid
    and keeps in running mode only.
    If i execute the same command in dos prompt,
    CommandLine
    ProcessId
    java -classpath ./../lib/StartApp.jar;./../lib; com.abc.middle.startapp.StartAPP  2468
    If i modify the command as,
    cmd.exe /C wmic process where "name='java.exe'" get commandline,processid  > 123.txt
    and keeps in running mode only.
    If i open the file when program in running mode, no contents in that file.
    If i terminte the program and if i open the file, then i find the processid in that file.
    Can you help me to solve this issue?

  • Running DOS command from JAVA

    Hi ,
    I would appreciate if anyone could tell me how to run DOS command such as "del" using JAVA language .Thank you.

    <steps onto soapbox>
    Surely for something like 'del' we should be advocating a non-OS specific method so we don't lose sight of Java's cross platform abilities.
    If it has to run an OS specific thing fine, but please look for a non OS specific solution first.

  • Firefox will not start and open a website from a Thunderbird email link. It will go to a link from Thunderbird once Firefox is open, but will not initially start Firefox and proceed to open the Thunderbird email link.

    Firefox will not ''start'' and open a website from a Thunderbird email link. A link from Thunderbird will open once Firefox is ''already'' started, but will not initially start Firefox and proceed to open the Thunderbird email link.

    I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
    When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.
    To the best of my knowledge, this problem started with the new update to Ver. 3.6.9. I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005

  • Running System 7.5.3 files and programs on OS X 10.5.8

    Hi all, it seems this might have come up before but I'm getting quite frustrated and I'm not sure how to proceed. I have an old PowerMac 7200 running System 7.5.3. I also have an iMac 7.1 running OS X 10.5.8. I want to be able to copy some of the PowerMac programs and files onto the iMac. I have copied the programs and files I need onto 100MB Iomega Zip disks, and I have an external Zip drive with a USB port that I can connect to the iMac. The problem is that the iMac won't recognise the disks formatted to System 7.5.3. How do get a copy of System 7.5.3 onto my iMac, and will it allow me to access and run the programs and files on these old disks? I've tried downloading emulators such Basilisk II and SheepShaver, but I have to say the process defeated me - I didn't really know what I was doing! I'd be really grateful for any thoughts.

    I don't want to get too far into the legal issues. However, I own a license for every mac OS since Apple II which had a command line interface, and I am therefore entitled to use any of the roms from my machines (I believe). I had no difficulty in assembling a package of all the items needed to run SS because there are extremely straightforward wikis available. I never did manage to make it print or join the network, although I did not try very hard because for me it was not useful.
    I have just looked at the link provided by Limnos. It appears to be true that Apple are indeed distributing free copies of the ROM and the Classic OS. There remains a minor issue of whether you can yourself distribute what you obtained free, and I believe you can not. It is probably best to let this discussion end at that.

  • Is it possible to run dos-command's in java?

    I have a small security problem. I have a dos-based java prog. with login at the start og the program, but I have problems hiding the password. I have managed to hide the password when it is typed, but when you press enter and get to the next menu, it is only to press the up-key, and dos recover the last typed sentence. (The password...) I have been able to fine the dos-command "doskey /reinstall", which will clear the memory, but I haven't been able to implemet this in my java-prog.
    Any tips/trics are appreciated.

    I doubt that calling that in your program would help.
    doskey is specific to the process. Running it by any means in java means that a new process will exist. You can verify this by open two console windows and running doskey in both. Nothing that you do in one will be reflected in the other.
    I don't think your problem is a program problem. That means that it should not be solved by software but rather by management. For example you certainly wouldn't expect your program to make sure that someone wasn't standing behind the user when they typed their password right? And what if someone installs a key grabber on the computer? In that case any program, yours included, would have all the key presses logged to a file.
    Alternatively if you might be able to solve it with one of the following...
    - Recode the application to use a GUI. If there is no console the doskey isn't going to get anything.
    - Write some JNI that bypasses the java input handling. If you handle the input directly then you can turn off echo
    - Inspect the java source code for the VM. There might be a hidden method to turn echo off. Alternatively you can find the code responsible for this, modify them, and use them with the bootclass option to replace the ones in the VM. This solution is not distributable. And it might not be possible solely using java.

  • Error while running DOS command in Java

    Hi all,
    I use "runtime" class to execute a DOS command "copy C:\\pathname\\*.* C:\\backupPathname\\". But I saw an error msg "CreateProcess: copy C:\pathname\*.* C:\backupPathname\ error=2".
    I did create a folder C:\backupPathname\ before running the DOS command.
    Pls help me all Java genius.

    I ended up writing a small 'c' program and pasing the command in to it from java. The problem seems to be that in dos, unlike unix, the copy command is not a program, rather the command is interpreted by the command.com program.

  • Running 5 commands using array elements and waiting between?

    Hi All,
    Trying to learn PS so please be patient with me ;)
    System: PSv3 on Win2012 server running WSUS role
    I am wanting to execute 5 commands using a 'foreach' loop but wait until one finishes before moving onto the next. Can you please check out what I have and provide some suggestions of improvement? or scrap it completely if it's rubbish :(
    Current code:
    #### SCRIPT START ####
    #Create and define array and elements
    $Array1 = @(" -CleanupObsoleteComputers"," -DeclineSupersededUpdates -DeclineExpiredUpdates"," -CleanupObsoleteUpdates"," -CleanupUnneededContentFiles"," -CompressUpdates")
    #Run the cleanup command against each element
    foreach ($element in $Array1) {
    Get-WsusServer | Invoke-WsusServerCleanup $element -Whatif
    #### SCRIPT END ####
    I am assuming that I need to use @ to explicitly define elements since my second element contains two commands with a space between?
    The cleanup command doesn't accept '-Wait' so I'm not sure how to implement a pause without just telling it to pause for x time; not really a viable solution for this as the command can sometime take quite a while. They are pretty quick now that I do
    this all the time but just want it to be future proof and fool proof so it doesn't get timeouts as reported by others.
    I have found lots of code on the net for doing this remotely and calling the .NET assemblies which is much more convoluted. I however want to run this on the server directly as a scheduled task and I want each statement to run successively so it
    doesn't max out CPU and memory, as can be the case when a single string running all of the cleanup options is passed.
    Cheers.

    Thank you all for your very helpful suggestions, I have now developed two ways of doing this. My original updated (thanks for pointing me in the right direction Fred) and Boe's tweaked for my application (blew my mind when I first read that API code
    Boe). I like the smaller log file mine creates which doesn't really matter because I am only keeping the last run data before trashing it anyway. I have also removed the verbose as I will be running it on a schedule when nobody will be accessing it anyway,
    but handy to know the verbose commands ;)
    Next question: How do I time these to see which way is more efficient?
    My Code:
    $Array1 = @("-CleanupObsoleteComputers","-DeclineSupersededUpdates","-DeclineExpiredUpdates","-CleanupObsoleteUpdates","-CleanupUnneededContentFiles","-CompressUpdates")
    $Wsus = Get-WsusServer
    [String]$Logfile = 'C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\ArrayWSUSCleanup.log'

    Get-Date | Out-File -FilePath $LogFile -Append -width 50
    Write-Output "Performing: $($Element)" | Out-File -FilePath $LogFile -Append -width 100
    . Invoke-Expression "`$Wsus | Invoke-WsusServerCleanup $element" | Out-File -FilePath $LogFile -Append -width 100

  • HOW DO I RUN DOS COMMANDS ON JAVA

    I SWEAR, I'LL PAY YA IF YOU HELP ME!!!
    Hi, this is the thing:
    have you ever run the "time" command on a DOS console?? if you have, you know that it shows the current time, and lets you set a new time.
    well, i need to make a java program to open a DOS console and execute the command, and making it able to write in information on the console so it sets a new time.
    MY PURPOSE IS NOT JUST WATCHING THE CURRENT TIME!! so please don't tell me to use System.getCurrentTimeMillis() or something like that; i explicitly need to run that DOS command. what's the Java code to do it??
    thank you!! and please attach your account # so you get a $50 deposit by the end of the week
    thank you!!

            at Tarea.main(Tarea.java:15)and it will come out the same shit over and over. The above case was thrown by the line Runtime.getRuntime().exec("temp.bat") where temp.bat is a file where the only thing written in it is the word "time". and you can change the string parameter of the method exec, and thats what will change in the stack trace above.
    I also tried "cmd", "command", and "command.com". With the last one, it opens the command.com application but it freezes and does nothing. With the other two, appears the same old shit from above.
    Please help me!!
    Thank you...

  • Run dos command

    Is possible to run a dos command by an AIR application and
    obtain the result? For example: can I launch "iireset /status" and
    obtain the status of iis?
    Grazie!

    You need to write a small Java Socket Listener, and you also
    need to create the Socket in you AIR Application. Before starting
    your AIR Application you need to start the SocketListener which
    sits listening to the incoming connection from the AIR Application.
    But you should use the same port at both the ends(Java and
    AIR Application end).
