  • Is it possible to run iTunes from a flash drive?

    Hi Everyone,
I just would like to know if you could run iTunes off a flash drive? It takes up alot of space on my hard drive and was hoping to free some up. I have an 8GB iPod and currently it's filled with 6.08GB of music. I purchased a 16GB flash drive and was thinking I could run it off there. See I don't access iTunes all that often and hopefully won't kill the drive. I guess the next part would be how should I go about it if it's posible?
    Thanks so much in advance!

You can certainly put your library on a flash drive, though I'd strongly, strongly recommend that you have another copy of your library elsewhere, as flash drives are easily lost, broken or corrupted. You cannot count on tracks always being available for redownload from the iTunes Store, if you have any such.
The easiest way to move your library is to just drag the entire iTunes folder (the _entire_ folder, _not_ just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location.
Note that this procedure assumes that all of your tracks are contained in the iTunes folder. If they're scattered around your volumes, moving them becomes much more complex.  And don't launch iTunes with the flash drive not mounted or iTunes will default back to the internal drive. If it does, though, just mount the external drive and launch iTunes with the Shift key again.
Don't delete the tracks from the old location until you've confirmed that they're working correctly from the flash drive.
    Regards.

  • Automatically mount flash drives in AwesomeWM

In Gnome when you put in a flash drive, it automatically mounts it in /media, and it's owned by me - so you can open a file on the flash drive in a file manager, the file isn't read only.  Is there anyway to do this in AwesomeWM?

You could just run thunar as a daemon and use it's volume management system.
    pacman -Sy thunar thunar-volman
    Start it with:
    thunar --daemon
It will automatically mount removable drives.

  • Auto-run file on USB flash drive

Is it possible to Auto-run a file on USB flash drive when it is first plugged in, or when it is clicked on ?

ok, clicking on the icon of a folder can not launch anything. what you can do is make it so that when you insert the flash drive then it plays that mp3. that can be done with a folder action but I would recommend using Do Something When http://www.azarhi.com/Projects/DSW/index.php for this. it works much better than folder actions and is easier to use.

  • MacBook Pro running slow after USB flash drive

I mount a Kingston USB flash drive to my 30 days old MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.4
My Mac didn't recognize, so I inserted another one and it did recognize it.
And I notice my mac was running slow, some task that I did the day before (illustrator cs6) were really fast.
But after that USB flash drive it went slow, I thought it was and error and reebot it, also cleaning out the Cache and other stuff with CleanMyMac.
But it continues to run slow.
Please if someone knows what I can do I will appreciate it.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Screen Capture Program Run Off of a Flash Drive

I am looking for a screen capture program that I would either be able to run off of a flashdrive, or something that I can easily move from computer to computer whenever I need it.
I do high end video work for a University and I am constantly being asked to do screen captures of a computer that is part of a technology demonstration. I love the features that Snap Pro X has, but the limitations of being able to only install on a HD with a running copy of OSX, and not being able to easily change the registered computer makes it to much for the hassle. Likewise, free apps like Jing work great, but are not easy to integrate into a FCP project.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that for most apps, you can just copy the .app file from /Applications/ to wherever you want-it may break some updating functionality, but that's the only way to have it in a different location.
    Good luck!

  • I'm trying to run win 8 on my Macbook Pro (running 10.8.5) is there anyway to run the software on bootcamp without using a flash drive?

I recieved a download of windows 8 OS Premium, and I'm trying to run it using bootcamp. Unfortunately it's trying to tell me that I need to run it off a flash drive. At this time I don't have a flash drive big enough to hold the OS and the required installer software. Any suggestions?

Apple only supports Windows on certain hardware.
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Apple provides their framework for Windows to run on a Mac, a piece of software called a Hybrid MBR that bridges the gap between how Windows reads the drive partition table (MBR) and EFI/GUID partition table that Mac's use.
It doesn't mean Windows can't run on your Mac, a third party solution called rEFIt will also bridge the gap and allow booting of more that just Windows, Linux as well for a triple booting computer.
Your hardware has to meet the other requirements the second and third operating system needs as as being able to install drivers that will work for your hardware, especially the fans or they will run loud and fast by default.
    http://refit.sourceforge.net/
This above is a advanced procedure which requires knowledge how computers and various operating systems, drive formats and so forth work.
I even admit I don't know everything myself, but I experiment on a separate piece of Mac hardware (out of warranty/AppleCare) designed for this purpose so in case something screws up I'm not taking down my only machine and can use the other to get online and find solutions.
There is a very high potential for losing your data if your using advanced/non-Apple methods to install Windows on your only Mac where Apple doesn't support it. Also one shouldn't be doing this on Mac hardware that is under AppleCare or warranty as it might be voided. Proceed at your own risk and education.

  • Run from a flash drive

Does anyone know if Illustrator or Photoshop can be run from a USB flash drive on the MAC versions ?

    No

  • Can't access usb flash drive while running a Linux OS

    Hello,
I'm a student taking a UNIX class at a local university.  I downloaded required Linux software for my class, called Knoppix version 4.0.2, on my Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5895.  The program runs fine but I cannot save the script I create to my usb flash drive.  The flash drive is a 4Gb Sandisk.  The light comes on the flash drive when plugged in but no icon is displayed on my desktop and the Knoppix OS won't recognize the flash drive.
I've discussed this problem with my Instructor and he can't identify what's causing the problem.  I've ran the Knoppix software on a friend's computer and it runs and recognizes my flash drive fine.  So the disk is good.  I've searched on the Internet and have had no luck discovering a solution.  I'm thinking now the problem could be with my processor, AMD Turion 64 X2.  But, I've been reading online, other computer users with an AMD Turion 64 X2 are having no trouble running Knoppix OS.  Below are the Knoppix system requirements and what is loaded on my computer.
    Knoppix system requirements:
    Intel processor (i486 or later)
32 MB of RAM for text mode, 64 MB for graphics mode
    Bootable CD-ROM drive
    Standard SVGA compatible graphics card
    Serial or PS/2 standard mouse
    My system:
    Toshiba Satellite L305-S5895
    Model: PSLC0U-01S01F
Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 GHz
    3.00 GB RAM
    32-bit operating system
Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2
Please give advice on what you think could be my problem.
    Thank you,
    Bradley

Try to manually mount it via Terminal.
Open Terminal and runs this command.
    >sudo /sbin/fdisk/ -l
That should list the available disks. They will be sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, ect. Usually the USB will be sdb if you don't have a second hard drive.
    Now run this command.
    >sudo mount /dev/sd*
Replace * with what the USB is.
    That should mount your USB

  • How do i install and boot mac os 10.4 on a usb flash drive?

i want to make a bootable flash drive for my powerbook g4 and i have a mac os 10.4 on a install disk.. i want to be able to boot from the flash drive.

At some point in the past, when the hardware was more recent, some said they
were able to make it work. To boot a PowerPC G4 iBook (USB2.0 ports) from a
USB flash drive memory device. The read/write speed of the USB flash had to
be optimal and the capacity large enough to accommodate the booting and also
the necessity for Virtual Memory to run on the USB flash drive, as with a HDD.
Some suggested they made a clone of a working system, boot from USB flash.
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=ibook+g4+boot+from+usb
There still are some bits and pieces of information pointing to discussions or
other topics of similar concept; some of the older sites aren't online any more
where claims and 'proof' were given that this worked out OK. Figuring the older
Apple portables were adapted to use CF or other camera memory cards, for use
in systems prior to OS X...
Sounds like a fun diversion, to take ones mind off weather, and other incidentals.

  • Can Onone softs DSLR server app be installed on a flash drive

Onone soft has an app to control your camera remotely using your iPod or Ipad. The sotware is in two apps: one app is installed on ios device and the other app is a server app that is installed on the Imac. Your mobil device connects to the camera over a local WiFi. When I take my camera to another location I would need to install the server app on the clients computer in order to remotely trigger my camera. It would be much easier to plug a flash drive in the clients machine with the server app on the drive. It would also allow me to have the Windows version of the server app as well as the Mac version on flash drives.

You need to ask the develper, if all you want to do is transport the app to another computer then you need to ask the developer if this is infringing on any of their licensing which I'm almost certain it is. If you want to try and run it from the flash drive this probably won't work.  You need a portable Mac such as a MBP or MBA.

  • Flash Drive

I made a new install of Snow Leopard ( with updates ) on my Oct 2009 MacBook Pro 13". With Bootcamp ( Windows ).
    Finally everything runs OK, EXCEPT:
The flash drive does not show in the finder. ( It shows in the hardware list, of course.)
Not in Mac OS, not in Windows.
( I want to use it, because the "shared folder" does not show in Windows.
And this would be my work-around. But that's another question I guess
( -> any comments for "filesharing on the same computer" is very welcome.)
    What can I do?

Yes, I did use the original CDs. And updated from there on.
But not from the built-in optical drive but from an external, as the built-in did not work always.
( At the moment it does! ).
Does Mac OS has a "scan for hardware" function or something?
I will pick up your suggestion, Tim, and try it from Windows 7.
I also could use the Boot Camp upgrades ... but it was such a hustle to make the 3.0 work ... that I will possibly avoid the risk :-).
I will get back and close the thread if I found a solution ...

  • Hard drive vs. flash drive durability

I want to buy one of the $249 iPods. Both the 8Gb Nano and the 30Gb Video are priced there. While it seems obvious to buy the larger capacity (size difference doesn't matter to me), I am concerned about the lifespan of the moving hard drive in the Video.
Can anybody compare their durability for me or point out any other points I am missing? I doubt that I will use the video capability very much.

I think it all comes down to how and where you plan on using it. If you plan on using it primarily while running or cycling, the flash drive would be a better option. If you care more about having lots of space (and you said you didn't) or about watching video, than the 30 gig would probably suit you better. Another consideration is size. Some people want a very small, pocketable device, other don't mind the larger, heavier 30 gig.
From your description of your needs, I say the Nano sounds right.
For what it's worth, I have a first generation 5 gig iPod that, though it really only works when plugged as the battery is shot, is still working. I used to run with it. The only iPod I've ever had to send in for repair was my 60 gig photo. The headset jack went bad while it was under warranty. I now use a first generation shuffle for running as it's just more comfortable than my 60 gig video. I don't treat any of them with extra special care. They've all been dropped (in cases) more than once.

  • Can I use a flash drive to run a virucide on a HP Notebook Mini 110?

My niece's HP Mini 119 1025DX notebook got infected with a false virucide program emulating MS Safety Essentials. As soon as the WinXP loads it displays itself. It has hijacked the computer and there is no access to the web or to restore the computer. She is a student and does not have a lot of money to fix it.
I can download the Malwarebytes software but there's no CD drive on the notebook to install it.  HELP!!!!

    Hi:
You can make a flash drive bootable and have the DOS files to run some commands, but whether or not it will work all depends on whether you can access the software's launch command from a DOS prompt. And you would need to know what that command is, like Setup.exe or whatever.
Here is a link on how to make a flash drive bootable and the applicable files.
    http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47812
If you can't get the program to run from a flash drive, you will have to obtain an external USB DVD-RW drive and run the disk using that.
I use the free Kapersky rescue disk to get rid of that particular malware.

  • Can I create MacOS on flash drive to run broken Imac?

So I've got an Imac that's all brokedy. Won't start up. I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard 10.6.7 on it from a boot disk, but got referred to Disk Utility. Disk Utility told me that the GB 500 drive was so fricked up that Disk Utility can't do a thing with it, I have to take it to a repair shop. But the Apple MacIntosh HD that's INSIDE the GB500 drive checks out OK according to Disk Utility.
It occurred to me that I could maybe install the Snow Leopard software into a flash drive and run the computer off of it, accessing the data and software on the MacIntosh HD via the flash drive, and at least being able to salvage important files that way. I'll need at least a 16 Gig flahs drive for that, no biggie, but my question is: is this feasible or some mad fantasy I've created out of an absurd desire not to get my wallet hijacked by Apple?

I think you'll find that your Hard Drive is failing, I hope you have some form of backup.
Your idea of creating a bootable flash drive could work but it will be useless if your HDD fails which according to your SMART status could happen soon.
I would make a full backup of your hard drive onto an external hard drive using Time Machine or another preferred backup method.
Then I would look into replacing the drive by myself or taking it to an Apple Store.
    Good Luck!
