Run imac9,1 from an external hard drive?

Can I run my imac9,1 from an external hard drive??

Mac's cannot run a version of OS X earlier than what was shipped with the machine. For example if your iMac shipped with 10.6.4 it cannot run 10.6.3 or earlier on either an internal or external drive.

  • Running itunes from an external hard drive

    Hi there,
My itunes library is getting a little too large for my iMac to handle (nearing 500gb of my 1TB hard drive, leaving little space for all my other software and documents) and I'd like to move the itunes library and run it from an external hard drive.
I've read the following link and am clear on the procedure...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Sure, I can go through the process and see what happens, however, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has done something similar and am curious as to whether they encountered any issues / have any words of wisdom to impart?!
I have an Apple TV which syncs with my iTunes, as well as an iPad and an iPhone.  The iPad and iPhone sync when connected, but the Apple TV syncs over WiFi...
Will I have any side affects by moving my library to an external hard drive?
I plan to purchase a drive with FireWire 800.  That said, I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule, but I cant seem to find any decent information on how to use it as an external hard drive...(even though, I believe, it says you can do so in the 'sales bumf' on the Apple store)
    Your thoughts/advice/comments wold be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    D

  • Can i download and run itunes from an external hard drive

can i download and run itunes from an external hard drive?

The iTunes application should be on the boot drive but you can keep the iTunes library on an external.
hold Shift when launching iTune sand select Create library and select the external.
This will create an iTunes folder on the external with all the library files and all media will also go into this folder.

  • When I download an app while running iTunes from an external hard drive, the app is automatically saved to the my music folder on my desktop.

Also, when I move an updated app from the my music folder to the external hard drive, it no longer automatically deletes the old version of the app in the folder.

Hi, I was waiting for somebody with experience to pipe in, but as I understand it it'll be that way for upto 5 users if your Sharing iTunes.

  • How do run iPhoto from an external hard drive?

I've moved my entire iPhoto library to an external hard drive and now can't remember how to open up iPhoto from that drive.

  • Why can't I move my iTunes library and run iTunes from an external hard drive?

I've been having issues with space on my Macbook pro, so I wish to move my music in order to free up more space. I have been following the instructions on how to run iTunes from an external drive, but each time I attempt it only the 'Automatically Add to iTunes' folder copies to my drive - which has nothing in it.
    What is going on?

Which exact set of instructions?  Just about all of them are wrong, even the ones that specifically say how to move your library.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

  • Can I run applications from an external hard drive

Hi I am a sort a new Mac user and I would like to run Lightroom from an external drive. Is this possible on a Mac?

Yes, but it will load a little slower. If it does disk I/O from the external then that will also be slower.

  • Can I run iTunes from an external hard drive?

My laptop's hard drive is getting pretty full. Collection of movies, songs, pods and pictures are taking up most of the space. Can iTunes be reinstalled into an external hard drive dedicated to my Apple iPods and iPhone stuff? Whenever I want to sync or visit the Apple Store, then I can just turn it on. Would appreciate any advice on how to manage a big inventory of files.
    Thanks.
    Priscilla

I just did this the other night....
I plugged in my hard drive, and copied the ENTIRE ITUNES FOLDER onto my hard drive. This is the folder you see when you open my music. It has all of your playlist and rating information in there. After that is finished, you have to go into your advanced preferences, and change the location of your itunes music folder. once you do this you should be set. it worked for me.
    hope this helps!

  • How do I run users from an external hard drive?

I used to have a 2 TB hard drive in my iMac. One of the users contains all my music, photos and videos. It's a very large file, of course.
I have just swapped out the 2 TB drive for a 120 GB SSD and reconnected the 2 TB drive as an external HD. The problem is, I've only got 60 GB of space left on it and that's not enough room for my media user. It's sitting on the external drive but I can't figure out how to access it.
I would like to be able to (1) run the media user from the external drive or, if that's not possible, (2) move the media user to the SSD but store the music, photos, video etc. on the external HD.
    Any tips? Thanks!

OK, here's how to do it on Photo Booth. It's a little different for every app, it seems.
On Photo Booth, you don't use aliases. The app doesn't like them. Instead, start by deleting the Photo Booth Library file in the new user. (You only want to do this if you have no photos in Photo Booth, I assume. Remember I've started with a completely new user.) Then launch Photo Booth. It will tell you there's no library and ask you to either create one or point to one.
Then point to your Photo Booth Library file on your external drive. (Again, permissions have to be set to allow the SSD drive access.)
By the way, I am not an expert in any of this. There may be better ways of doing all this, but I couldn't find them on discussions so I'm recording them here in case they help people in future. Feel free to chime in with a more elegant solution, if there is one! But this all does seem to be working so far.

  • Running Apps from an External Hard Drive.

Is it possible to download a massive app from the app store like Bioshock Infinate (30 Gigabytes), copy it from your applications folder in finder to the hard drive, and then run it from the hard drive?

    What folder?
    As above;
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external drive.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder on the external.
so where is this folder that i should trash?
Delete /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal drive.

  • Can I run Mavericks from an external hard drive while keeping Snow Leopard?

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook 5.2 which runs ok with Snow Leopard but I was wondering if I should upgrade to Mavericks now. Because I'm not sure how the new operating system will run on my machine I thought I could install Mavericks on an external USB hard drive and boot from there to evaluate if it runs fine for me.
Not sure if this is possible as I understand that 10.6 and Lion/ML/Mavericks have different filesystems etc... Don't want to upgrade, realise that 10.9 is not running smoothly for me and having to downgrade to Snow Leopard again - which if I remember well what I read a while ago it is not a straightforward operation....
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks
    Mike

Yes it's possible and quite easy.  However, do not install on a thumb drive - I've tried this with a 16gb and it's slower than a bread wagon with biscuit wheels.
Now I'm running a lacie external 500gb drive (partitioned) and a firewire 800 cable on macbook pro with Mavericks.  Now it's smokin fast, faster that running my base hard-drive on snow leopard, however the external drive with mavericks osx is still dependent on the guts and performance of the macbook itself.

  • I'm trying to boot my new iMac running Mavericks from an external hard drive with Snow leopard but it fails with a window telling me to power down manually. It works with my old iMac.

I have made a bootable copy of OS 10.6.8 onto an external G-drive from my 2007 24" iMac with success. I can't boot up my my new 2013 imac that has Mavericks installed. Any suggestions?

  • Run iTunes from the external hard drive?

I've been going through the posts and I don't think any recent ones are talking about what I want to do. I have a Macbook Pro (OSX10.5.8) and a desktop G4 (OSX10.4.8). I have extensive iTunes (and iPhoto) collections on each one. Is it possible to install iTunes and iPhoto directly onto the 1T LaCie hard drive and move my entire collection over to it? I already backup all that to various hard drives, but I would like to go to one place to access my songs and photos.

The applications cannot (or at least should not) be moved. But you can move your tracks and photos.
For iTunes, drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Shift key (Windows)/Option key (Mac) while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Note that this procedure assumes that all of your tracks are contained in the iTunes Music folder. If they're scattered around your volumes, moving them becomes much more complex.
    For iPhoto, see:

  • Can I run plugins from an external hard drive on Logic?

    Question above

Yes.. the plugins themselves must reside on the system drive... in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.
If you have a small system drive.. or you are running out of space on your System HD (and you should keep at least 20% of the total space free to give your OS X some 'breathing room" for it to work effiecently...you can always install another copy of your OSX on, and then boot from,  an EXT HD... which you then can install Logic on along with all the Plugins..
Just make sure that Ext HD is a 7200rpm non green or power saving model and it is connected via FW800 or TB (or a FW800 drive via a TB to FW800 adapter) or UBS3.. but do not try using a USB2 HD.. or a 5400rpm model as they tend to have performance issues..
Those that have smaller SSDs as their System Drives often find this approach to be the best solution

the internal is small and I use itunes mainly for downloading podcasts which creates a quickly growing library

You do not.  iTunes like all programs must be installed on the main drive of the computer, typically the C drive.
The media, apps, and other content can be stored on another drive.  Is that possibly what you intended?
