Run Mailsmith as a service?
I am running a Snow Leopard Server and was hoping to run my Mailsmith client as a service, so that it ran all the time regardless of who was logged in, if anybody, so I can process my mail at anytime. Currently I have to have a user logged in all the time to have it running. I use Mailsmith because it is the only product I know of that let's you download emails and strip the attachments off to a folder on the server. I use it in conjunction with a faxing service, so all my faxes get stored in a folder (as pdf's) and then I have a perl script that splits apart my multipage pdf's into single page items that can be stored as individual work orders and dumped into a database for storage and retrieval. Any help getting this to work would be greatly appreciated.
You can't just arbitrarily turn a GUI app into a faceless background application. Background applications need to follow specific rules with regards to how they're launched and how they run.
If it were possible at all, it would be a question for the Mailsmith authors.
About the closest I think you'll get is to enable fast-user switching and have the Mailsmith user log in and launch Mailsmith, then switch to some other user account, leaving Mailsmith open in the background. It's not quite what you asked for, but it might be enough to achieve your goal.

Having trouble when I launch iTunes (version 11.0.2) on my Dell Laptop running Windows 7 Professional (service pack 1). I get an error message indicating software required to communicate with iPod and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you? I normally respond with OK and it immediately tells me "could not be repaired. Please reinstall iTunes..." I have done this a number of times to no avail.
I also notice Quicktime is not getting installed at all.
That one is normal nowadays (ever since the iTunes versions 10.5.x).
The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you?
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.) -

I am trying to update iTunes on my desktop (running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3) and I continue to receive an error message stating that the update cannot continue because Bonjour and Quicktime are older versions and to contact technical support. I have tried repairing both and tried to uninstall iTunes and all of it's componants and still receive the same message. Any help getting this issue resolved as soon as possible will be much appreciated.
(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? -
'Not running in a hosted service or the Development Fabric' exception on deployed Worker role
We are getting this exception after a worker role has been operating fine in production for several weeks. Once this exception starts getting reported, it will keep getting it every time the worker role tries to access anything with the Diagnostics:

How do you create a program in Labview that can be run as a Windows Service?
I would like to create a Labview program that can be run as a Windows service. I have read the following Knowlegebase articles and have done what they say.
Creating a Windows NT Service Using LabVIEW http://www.ni.com/white-paper/3185/en
Running a LabVIEW Application as a Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2008/7 User-Defined Service http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/21BA0F671A63A60386256CB4004DF99B
When trying to start the service I get an error that says the program didn't respond to the start in a timely manner. I also set the "run when opened" parameter in the VI. I am programming in Labivew 2010, proffesional version. The server is running Windows Server 2008. Can anyone help? Is the ini file important in Windows Server 2008?I haven't looked through all those links. But I have created Windows Services from LabVIEW executables way back when WinXP came on the market.
The problem with services is that they have no UI. So you can't really see what is going on. Your EXE might be failing or hanging due to some kind of error (most liklely a security/permissions error), but you can't see the error. So my advice is to either:
1. Have your EXE write lots of info to a log file. Write info that log every step in the application. If an error ocurrs, have it write the error info to the log file. That is a very useful debugging tool.
2. Use VI Server functions to monitor the service to see what is going on. -
Running OC4J as a service in Windows 2000
I've been trying to have OC4J run as a service in Windows 2000, as having to be logged in isn't very flexible.
I've searched the net, and I found a tool by Microsoft called srvany.exe/instsrv.exe, which should install any program as a service. It works, but the service shuts down whenever I log off, which defeats the purpose.
What I've done is run the command line
instsrv "Oracle Application Server" C:\Progs\Service\srvany.exe
and then edit the registry settings under the newly created folder to
Application=C:\Progs\Oracle 9i AS\j2ee\home\java
AppParameters=-jar oc4j.jar
AppDirectory=C:\Progs\Oracle 9i AS\j2ee\home
Does anyone know this tool well enough to tell me what I'm doing wrong, or know something else I can use?
Brigt Olav VikHi
Have managed to run oc4j as a service as follows under xp pro
Download runexescv from http://www.judoscript.com/goodies/index.html
Unpack and run
Create service say OracleOc4j
Needs basic parameters setup
Cmdline and Home
My setup is
debug=false
cmdline=c:\ora9ias\jdk\bin\java - Dorg.omg.CORBA. ORBClass=com.inprise.vbroker.orb.ORB -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBSingletonClass=com.inprise.vbroker.orb.ORB -Doracle.security.jazn.config=c:\ora9ias\j2ee\Oracle9iDS\config\jazn.xml -Doracle.home=c:\ora9ias -DORACLE_HOME=c:\ora9ias -jar c:\ora9ias\j2ee\home\oc4j.jar -userThreads -config c:\ora9ias\j2ee\Oracle9iDS\config\server.xml
( all from startinst.bat )
home=C:\ora9ias\j2ee\home\
Save and close
Oracleoc4j will now be set up as service
Change service to auto and start service !!
Appears to be neat and easy way of setting up an OC4J service

Can we run itunes as a service on windows
Can we run itunes as a service? If not we really need the dev team to step up and fix it.
With the new option for sync over wifi we really need a service that runs in the background of our home pc's for the sync. As you know this takes place everytime you apply power, or when you hit the sync now button. So, unless we run itunes in its fullest all the time we can't count on the wifi sync to do what it is designed for. Running itunes eats up computer resources that some people need when doing school work, job work, and other important things. So please build a new version of itunes that allows it to run in the background and serve as a sync service.
Anyway this might be the wrong place for a suggestion but hopefully someone will get it to the right people.Take a look at something called java service wrapper ,
http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/introduct
on.htmlNot seen that one before. Ta.
Alexandria software used to support a simpler app called JavaService... google for that maybe if the above is too much.

All I found about this error is that it occurs if you start local Azure compute emulator with in-role caching and without administrative rights. But in emulator everything works fine and problem occurs only after I publish to staging environment. (if switch
to production, error remains).
I use cache for resolving routes like /username and /countryname etc. So available usernames and country names will be cached and updated on changes in database. I have static class with static DataCache object which is created on first request to cache. But
even home page doesn't start so error occurs before I try to create cache object.Hi Jambor, I don't have reference errors. I had them before but already fixed with copy local = true for few references.
I receive error only on azure host service. In local everything works great, app starts, cache works and I can see data in cache. Yes, in local mode cloud project is set as startup and VS runs as administrator.
I've added TraceListener creating code you suggested:
protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
System.Diagnostics.Trace.Listeners.Add(new Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Diagnostics.DiagnosticMonitorTraceListener());
and error code changed a little. But as I see problem is the same but caused when creating TraceListener from Application_Start instead of when initalizing cache:

Is it possible to run steam as a service in the background?
Now that Steam In-Home streaming works from a Linux host, I was wondering if was possible to get Steam t run as a background service? The idea being that I simply need to boot the host computer and can then play games on my laptop elsewhere without needing to log into the host box - or start Steam on it manually.
Apart from possible performance issues, users on the host computer need not even be aware that Steam is running.
Can this be done?MainStage is an application, not a plugin. So, no, it can't be used in Cubase.

I have two questions about running Tomcat as a service.
First, when I try to install and start tomcat 3.3.2 with the java sdk 1.4.0 using jk_nt_service, the service won't start. When I execute the following command, jk_nt_service -S Tomcat-3.3-2-Dev, I get a response of Tomcat-3.3.2-Dev failed to start. When I execute the following command, net start Tomcat-3.3.2-Dev, I get a system error 1067 response. Does anyone know how to get around this error?
Second, if we try to run Tomcat 4.1.27 as a service, we get very slow response compared to running startup.bat in the bin directory. Does anyone know why this is and what could be done to improve the performance?
Jim FieldI don't know the answer to the first question.
Regarding the second one: when you say "slow response", do you mean for every request you send to the service compared to sending the same request to Tomcat started with startup.bat, or are you referring to just starting the service?
Have you measured the response time for a number of requests to both the service and script-started Tomcat, or is this a subjective judgement? MOD -
Running weblogic as a service on NT
We are currently trying to run weblogic as a service on Windows NT. Yet the service
has hung once and run out of memory once. The hardware and software specification
is listed below.
Hardware
System Intel
CPU: Dual 866 MHz or faster
Memory: 500 MB
Hard Drives: 2 x 10 GB RAID-1 System Drive
Network: Static IP allocation and TCP/IP network protocolTwo Fast Ethernet 10/100
Software
Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Typical InstallBEA WebLogic Version 5.1 with Service Pack
8 and JDBC drivers for MSSQL ServerJava 2 SDK Version 1.3.1 RC 2
The WebLogic server has been using the srvany.exe and instsrv.ex utilities (part
of the NT Resource Kit) . Note that it is necessary to use the srvany utility rather
than the custom BEA service utilities in order to allow the passing of command line
parameters to the JVM. An important JVM parameter is –Xrs which prevents JDK1.3
applications which run as a service on NT from shutting-down when the user who started
the service logs out. This problem does not occur on Win2K systems.
1. Set-up a ‘weblogic’ user account that is a member of the Users group
and has explicitly assigned 'log on as a service' right.
2. At a command prompt install srvany with the command
INSTSRV WGO_server c:\winnt\system32\srvany.exe
3. Use the services applet (in the Control Panel) to ensure that the service will
run using the weblogic account and that the service is set for automatic startup
4. Use the Registry Editor REGEDT32.exe to configure srvany as follows:
a. Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentContrelSet\Services\WGO_server and
select Add Key from the edit menu.
b. The key to be added should have the name “Parameters” – the
class field may be left empty.
c. Highlight the newly created Parameters key and select the Add Value option from
the edit menu. The name of the value to be added is “Application” and
the type of value is REG_SZ. When you o.k. these options, you will be asked to provide
the string value representing the application to be triggered by servany –
type in the path to the startweblogic.cmd file:
c:\weblogic\WGO_server\startweblogic.cmd
d. With the Parameters key still highlighted, select the Add Value option from the
edit Menu. The name of the value is “AppDirectory” and the type is REG_SZ.
Set the directory in which the application runs by typing in the path
c:\weblogic\WGO_server
5. To start the weblogic server, return to the Service applet in the control panel
and start the service named WGO_server. To shutdown the service, first run the script
c:\weblogic\WGO_server\shutdown to shutdown weblogic cleanly, wait a few moments
and then stop the WGO_server service via the Service applet.
If anyone has experienced a similar problem please let me know
Thanks
JoI would look at all the other startup script you have on your machine already.
They are usually placed in /etc/init.d and these files are often linking into /etc/rc3.d
I suggest you google on how to setup a service for your flavour of linux as they are not all the same. -
Recommendations for configuring DSEE 6.3.1 to run as a Windows service?
Hi All, I need some recommendations for configuring DSEE to run as a Windows service. Currently I have CACAO, DSCC, and the Web Console configured and running as Windows services and this works fine. I would like to configure the directory itself to run as a Windows service so that it will restart automatically if the server reboots for any reason. Using dsadm enable-service --type WIN_SERVICE I configured this but initial testing indicated that the service will fail to start automatically on reboot. I can start it manually once the server is rebooted. This appears to indicate a dependancy of some sort with one of the other services like CACAO or DSCC but I did not see any documentation on this. Does anyone know the appropriate way to configure the directory to run as a Windows service? Thanks.
There is an entry in the application-management-common-agent-container log

Running WL as NT Service is not Creating Connection Pools?
We have something very strange happening here. We recently installed Weblogic 6.1 sp 4 on an WinNT 2000 box and installed our application. We are connecting to an Oracle 8.1.7 database using the Oracle 8.1.7 client drivers. We configured our connection pool via the Web Console. We also installed our application to run as a NT Service using "beasvc.exe" utility.
When we run our application after starting Weblogic from the commandline, our application runs fine. It creates the Oracle connection pool and everything is great.
However when we run our application by starting it under the NT Services window, our application fails to start the connection pool. Looking at all the logs, I don't see and errors or exceptions being thrown. I did notice that the connection pool was not created. But again, no errors were thrown.
Has anyone seen this behavior? To make things more confusing for me, this whole solution is working fine on another WinNT 2000 box with the only difference beint that we are using Weblogic 6.1 sp2. Anyone have any ideas??? Also, running the NT Service version of Weblogic in debug mode also worked! It takes the Oracle service quite a bit of time to start up. Make sure that you
set up the DependsOnService correctly in your registry so that Oracle comes up
fully before launching WL.
