Run MBP with out battery?

My 2008 MBP battery has started to bulge meaning its time to buy a new one, only problem is I cant afford £120 at the moment so I was wondering if its safe to run the MBP with out its battery for around a month?

Just a word of caution... Without your battery, even a very brief power interruption will cause you to lose anything you may be working on... so, unless you have your charger plugged into an uninterruptible power supply... save often !

MacBook Pro (CoreDuo) sometimes runs hot, with short battery life

I am having a somewhat intermittant problem with my MacBook Pro (CoreDuo 15"/1.83/1 Gig). I keep track of the computer using the widget iStat Pro, as I have found CoreDuo Temp to be pretty unreliable as far as temperature is concerned. Now, usually, I leave the computer on, but asleep and charging. Twice now, when I have awakened the computer for use on battery, it started running very warm, and was using the battery charge very quickly. For example, a few minutes ago, the battery was at about 90%, and the time left on the charge was well under 2 hours, while the temperature of the CPU was about 78 deg C. This was using the computer for web surfing. About 10 minutes after a restart, the CPU temperature is down to 53 deg C, and the battery life is up to 2:46, with 77% charge, values that I am more used to seeing. Since this is the second time I have seen this happen, I am beginning to get a bit worried. The computer is under AppleCare, so any problems will be covered by Apple, but this seems to be pretty unusual behavior. Should I contact Apple about this?

First you ought to find out if you have any processes running that are hogging CPU time. Use Activity Monitor. Select All Processes from the drop down menu. Click on the CPU % column header to order a descending sort. Observe what processes may be using large amounts of CPU time when you observe the computer running very hot.

Depreciation Run fails with out providing a proper error

Hi Experts
I have some where around 14,000 assets in my fixed assets master in SAP B1. Currently it takes 15 hours to run the depreciation. But from December after it runs for 15 hours it shows the status as Posting journal entries but after a while it fails the run saying the depreciation run has been failed and cancelled. But there is no error description. When i check the log file in the %temp% folder also there is no error given.
How can i solve this problem this is critical to our operation, please let me know the settings that i have to check and everything

When we ran the depreciation in November it was successful, but in December we added some where around 2,000 more assets. After that only the depreciation started failing again. So is there any criteria that i have to check in the database.and is there anything that i can do to speed up the depreciation run.
Do you know any other third party add-on that we can use to manage the fixed assets because currently i find it very hard to trouble shoot.

Running MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. - Non Visible Dock Icons

Several Apple Applications are no longer visible on the Dock. They haven't disappeared - they are there, but there is a blank space where they are. If I open one, there is a blue dot underneath it.
Removing from Dock and returning it there and saying keep in dock do nothing.
They are there, just not visible. There is a blank space in between Icons.
In between Address Book and iTunes is where iChat is.
The specific ones ore iChat and TextEdit - so far.
Can someone help?

What were you doing when you noticed that your icons became invisible?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.

Can MBP be run with internal battery removed?

I'm trying to isolate a problem which I believe — but am not certain — is to do with the battery, so I'd like to take it out and boot the mac. Is this possible?
My old iBook G4 with the removable battery can be run without it, but can this be done on the MBP with internal battery, or is it needed to route the power supply?

In fact I have booted the MBP now without the battery in order to test whether that was causing my kernel_task problem (i posted about this in another thread), and it appears not.
Kernel-task is running at over 103%, I'm can't boot at all sometimes, with the machine taking 10 mins to give the login window but then no keyboard input so login is impossible (this also happens in safe mode).
When it does boot (one out of two or three times), it runs fine for about 20 minutes and then things start crashing. I've tried booting of my clone and the symptoms are the same, so its not HD failure.
Bit stumped here, anyone got any suggestions?
(I'm currently posting on my old 2004 iBook G4, slow battered and with a screen that feels like I'm going half blind, but god I love this machine!. As the old saying goes 'they don't make 'em like they used to...' )

Is it safe to run a mpb with out a battrey

hi my battrey just died so i replaced it with one that was sat on my shelf (i think it's dead becaues it not charging) so i was wondering if it's safe to run the mbp with out a battrey till i get a new battrey ?

I misspoke (wrote). Actually the MBP lowers the processor speed when running without the battery.

I have all my music on a external HD. How can I run iTunes on my laptop with out my EHD connected? when I open iTunes I get: Afolder containing "iTunes Library" cannot be found, and is required. Please chose or create a new iTunes library.

Once you get a complete iTunes folder on the external drive, start iTunes with the option/alt key held down and select the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive. You will also need to do this with your main computer or the libraries will become unsynchronized.
Alternatively you can make a separate library using the same media on the second computer. Start as you have been doing, let iTunes create a new, blank library file which will be on hte internal drive, set the media folder location in preferences to be the one on the external drive, then add the files to the new iTunes library. Unless you are a super-organized individual, or you don't care if your libraries do not have the same content, you are better off using a single library file that is on the external, not setting up separate library files.

How to run tasks with priority?

I want to run tasks with priority, i.e. among several simultaneous running tasks, the task with the higher priority will have more chances to occupy CPU time. I have the following 2 issues dealing with the implementation of such feature.
- To define each task as a thread or as a method? How to change the priority of each task dynamically when they are running?
- The priority feature of Java thread does not meet my requirement, since I can not define priority precisely. For example, I want to define that a task with priority A will occupy CPU time 3 times than a task with priority B.
I am wondering whether I can find similar open source projects or tutorials?

Aseet Data maintenance with out G/L Accounts

Hi ,
One of our clients is moving out from SAP to Pepolesoft. But they still want to maintain all the Asset Data with values in SAP only. They also want to run depreciation in SAP, but nothing should get posted in SAP. After running AFAB, system should interface to PS.
Is it possible to maintain Master in SAP with out G/L Accounts( But values should be captured in SAP ) and run AFAB with out G/L Account assignment in the Asset Masters ?

Thanks for the valuable inputs. But there are few more clarifications in this regard.
a) Interface to peoplesoft is secondary thing. We will be interfacing all the data including G/L, AR, AP, Assets to PS at later point of time. Hence this is not to be a concern at this point of time.
b) Now that, we have already posted entries in Asset Accounting in 2008 & 2009, we need to continue Asset Accouting for year 2010. But unless we close 2008, we cant use 2010.
Hence my concern is how to open 2010, with out cloising 2008. or can we run dcepreciation for 2008, with out posting any entries in SAP, so that once we run depreciation for all the periods in 2008, we can close that and open 2010.

Crazy idea: run your notebook *without* battery connected

I do this with my PC laptop: run it with the battery unplugged
I use it as a desktop machine - there's no need for the battery to be charged, used and recharged
Same with my Macbook - this a great idea - since it means your battery will have a much much much longer life
Problem: the magnetic power cored connector
Along with the iPhone and iPad, I think this is one of the genius inventions from Apple
But... for my strategy... this causes a problem - a small tug and power gone!
Power gone = laptop completely cut off = not good for the health of your hard drive + precious work lossed partially + currupted files
Just wanted to know what others thought of the idea?
+ A solution to the problem?

Let's say you have a brand new notebook
12months - 18 months later, your battery is now dead
A brand new one will cost £150 (just made that up - not sure of the exact cost)
Result: you will have to spend £150!
Now let's say you follow my ingenious idea...
18 months later... 24 months... 36 months... your battery could still have 50% life left in
I actauclly spoke to Apple yesterday and asked about the warranty of the battery
They said to me that it doesnt have 12 months warranty - it has a 1000 times charge and discharge warranty
(Not entirely sure if I misunderstood the message given though)
My laptops are *always* used as a desktop - only 5% of the time do I use on my lap
Surely I am not the only one in the world to do the same??

Init with out data transfer and DELTAS

Dear Gurus,
I created Generic data source using Function module on FAGLFLEXT table. Here i used TimeStamp for capturing DELTAS. In the first run while loading into PSA i selected INIT WITH DATA TRANSFER then it got failed. Again i deleted INIT Request in Schedular and RUN INIT WITH OUT DATA TRANSFER then it got Sucess. Again i run Delta then it also it got failed. Again i deleted the INIT Request and out FULL LOAD. IT got success. May i know why MY Deltas are getting Failed.even in R/3 side when i checked in RSA7 then in status column and in Current Status Tab it showing time stamp field like this . . : :.
I got Stuck up I dont know what to do............
Can one kindly give solution for this.

Debug your generic DataSource, using RSA3, to determine why the delta failures are occurring. It's most likely in the delta logic portion of your custom Function Module.

MBP with battery removed- CPU runs slow?

I'm working on a project today on my MacBook pro with the battery removed.. The battery kind of exploded and warped out of shape which I only noticed last night, luckily apple have a recall program that covers my model of machine so I'll get a free replacement in a couple of days. Anyway, meantime I'm working on a pretty intensive project with a lot of stuff going on in terms of plug ins and instruments etc. Running it in no battery mode with just the power adapter, I'm noticing the CPU bars are pegging pretty hard. I know it's a busy project but I could've sworn it was hardly pipping the CPU's before. Then I remembered reading somewhere that if you use a mac notebook with no battery plugged in the CPU max speed is automatically limited to 1ghz or something.. But I'm not sure if this was some kind of folk tale or actual fact. Anybody have any ideas about this? I don't get my new battery for a couple of days and i'd sort of like to have logic running normally in the meantime if possible...

4 month I was working without the battery in my new MBP, because I thought to preserve it when using the MBP at home. I was so dissapointed with the performance that I thought about selling the MBP again. Just by accident I found a note in a forum saying: if you remove the battery, the tact of the CPU goes down to 1Ghz. I went back home to put the battery back in and I had the power I was expecting. Suddenly all PlugIns were easily handled by the MBP. I was surprised that so few people know about this. So yes: take out the battery and you won't even have half the power (if you have more than 2 GHz).

perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

Are there any new 17 " MBPs with matte display out which run properly?

CD = Core Duo, the 1st generation of 17" MBP from way back in 2006. It was flawless when I got it. It's still running perfectly 3 years later. Only issue was a bad battery, and that was a known manufacturing problem at Sony that affected Macs as well as PC laptops. Apple extended the warranty to cover the issue, and replaced mine for free ~3 months after my one-year warranty expired. Two colleagues have the new 17" unibody MBP, one with glossy and one with matte, both are flawless.

Try to do a reset, if it doesn't work try remove recently added apps this may solve your problem ( like google app because it has happened with me)
Take a look at apps using your location service in privacy, it can cause battery draining.
