Run software in older version of OSX?

I have a CD of a video tutorial program that runs fine on my older (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) MBP with 10.4.11, but won't work on my new (3.06 GHz C2D) MBP running 10.6.2
Any ideas for how to problem-solve getting the software to run on my new MBP?

Thomas,
if their:
I have a CD of a video tutorial program that runs fine on my older (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) MBP with 10.4.11
it doesn't need Classic. Because a MacBook Pro can't run Classic.
Thus the reason for something not to be compatible with 10.6, while it is compatible with 10.4.11 must have something else the matter other than Classic compatibility. Usually it means it may needs either Rosetta or 32 bit computing. Sometimes though it might need to be upgraded for driver compatibility for Snow Leopard.
32 bit applications may fail to work in Snow Leopard, if either the System Preferences, or the application itself is set for 64 bit mode. Go to Applications and click once on System preferences. Select Get Info, and check if 32 bit or 64 bit is checked. If 64 bit is unchecked, it is running in 32 bit mode. Same for the tutorial application.
If we had the name of the video tutorial application, we could probably tell you which of these it might require. Or you could contact the author of the tutorial program.
See my user tip about Rosetta & Classic:

  • Better to run with an older version of Flash (11.2) or with the latest with protected mode off?

The newest version of Flash (12) doesn't work correctly on my Windows 7 system(using Firefox). I tried  fixing the issue in many ways (reinstalled my video driver, disabled hardware acceleration, clean Flash install, etc.) without luck. The only thing that worked was the "last resort" (found that the bottom of this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493): disabling protected mode. My question is "Is it better for me to run with an older version of Flash (11.2) or with the latest version with protected mode turned off?" Thank you,

You should always run the latest version, with one exception, which wouldn't apply in your case (PowerPC Macs CAN'T run anything newer than 10).
That's with or without Protected Mode enabled.

  • I want to install an older version of OSX

I bought a used Mac Mini (Mid 2010) that has Mountain Lion installed.  I want to erase the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  How do I go about installing an older version of OSX?

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • How can I download "older" versions of OSX?

    Hi there
I have an old iMac that I would like to upgrade, but I don't seem to be able to find any older verson of OSX on the app store, like Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Only Yosemite is available and I as one would expect it's not possible to install that on such old hardware.
I have looked around and found some downloads from CNET etc. but they are all updates and not the full OSX version. Is really there no way to download the older OSX versions from the app store or somewhere else? The computer still works 100% fine and the only reason I want to upgrade is because I'm getting errors from the app store saying that newer version of OSX is required (mostly 10.7+) so even just Lion would be fine it seems.
    My hardware specs are:
    Model Name:    iMac
    Model Identifier:    iMac5,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed:    2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors:    1
    Total Number Of Cores:    2
    L2 Cache:    4 MB
    Memory:    3 GB
    Bus Speed:    667 MHz
What can I run on this, and more importantly, where can I get it from? I am loathe to throw out a perfectly functioning iMac and as this is my in-laws computer they can't really afford to buy a new iMac just because Apple doesn't allow "old" software versions to be installed... :-/
    Any ideas would be welcome
    Thanks,
      Jacques

You can install Lion but nothing later. You can get Lion from the Online Apple Store - the URL for the USA Store is
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
Or you can just search for Lion. You will get a code which you can use to download and install it from the Mac App Store (10.6.8 required).

  • How can I load an older version of OSX onto my iMac?

    Hey:
I have a Mid-2011 iMac running 10.7 right now.  I partitioned the boot drive, creating a new space so I could load up 10.6 (in an effort to be able to play my older Diablo II and Warcraft games) but my retail CD version is not working.  I did some research, and found that this is because my hardware is incompatible with the oldest versions of 10.6.  What I am confused about, when reading through threads, is how can I  get around this?  Is there a way I can load up a newer version of 10.6 (like 10.6.3 or newer) onto this partition?  Do I need an older Mac to do this (right now both my laptop and iMac are running 10.7 but I could always borrow my Mom's laptop for a bit since she is running 10.6.x)?  Since I have a legal version of 10.6 I assume there is a way to do this, but I am not sure how to approach.  I'm pretty knowledgeable with computers & technology, so I just need a general outline to get me started.
Any help from the community would be wonderful.  Thanks so much in advance.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.  I'm not looking to replace my current operating system, because I primarily need to work out of 10.7.  I just need the older version (basically dual boot, choose which operating system I want at startup) to occassionally play the games that are not supported in 10.7.  Actually, I had heard of lots of people doing this but the responses were all over the place and I was hoping to get a concise thought of what will work for my specific scenario.
Unfortunately borrowing my mother's computer is not  an option as she lives miles  from me and I would never know when I have the time or want to play.  Anyone who has played Diablo or Warcraft can sympathize, my mom would never see her computer again if I needed it to play these games.
Thanks again.  I might try the external drive scenario, but was just hoping to be able to dual boot into 10.6 directly with the hard drive(s) in the computer because my USB and firewire ports are all taken with lots of other equipment (I'm a graphic/web designer so have 2 printers, wacom tablet, external backup, 2 large die cut machines and so much more already plugged in).  I'm pretty tapped out on ports without using a hub and I don't like the way they work (too many years in technology knowing that direct connect is the best way to go).

  • My MacBook Pro is running on an older version of Mac OS X but will not allow me to upgrade to a newer version

My MacBook Pro is running on a 10.5.8 operating system but has not allowed me to upgrade. It has been fine for the past few years but is now getting to the point where programs are not functioning properly. What operating system should I be trying to upgrade to and what should I do in order for the upgrade to work? I have tried upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard but it says that I need 10.6 in order to upgrade to Snow Leopard. The only upgrade that has begun to work has been a 10.5.6 which is a less updated version of the operating system that I'm already using. Will downloading 10.5.6 allow me to upgrade to a better version? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

  • Can I run Safari 6  on an older version of OSX?

My wife needs to have a Safari version of 6 or above.  Here current version of 5 will not allow her to take part in an on-line discussion which she wants to join.
When Software Update is run it says all the software is up to date.
Can I download a newer version of Safari from somewhere and run on here Mac?  Or must I update her operating system first - I don't want to do this if I can help it!
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul

    Thanks Niel,
I had a feeling this was going to be the case.
If you don't mind answering another question please:
It sounds like I need to purchase an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  Then I can upgrade from that by downloading and installing further upgrade(s).
Please can you tell me if these upgrades are easy to do?  And will they keep the existing data files and E-mail etc. or does it imply a fresh install of the machine?
    Thank you.

  • How To Install Older Version of OSX on Second Account

I still use my Elements 8 Photoshop with a plug-in supplemental application called Essentials which is now not supported on the latest OSX mavericks business, and I’m sure Elements 8 isn’t to far behind either.
So is there any way I can put back one of my older OSX’s to a secondary account allowing me to switch when I feel like using Elements 8 ...being that I don’t see the reinstall on my time capsule for Elements 8 at all for some reason, humph.

Yeah ....I think I’m just going to stick with Mountain Lion here on out and drop Mavericks (I’ll look up on discussions on how to reinstate - I’m sure it’s there). Because come to think of it ...this Photoshop business or rather Adobe all going online will be an issue in the near future no doubt ...best quit while I’m ahead.
But the scoop I had at the time with putting iTunes on a partition was, increases performance ...I mean you can’t tell me that a hard drive full of applications will run just as fast with one that has only a few, right? I mean that’s the big push for Solid State Hard Drives, no? Running just as fast and “cool” when full, no?
I can say though having my iTunes on a partition; if making things run faster I can only speculate because I’m in no position to compare, it’s either one way or the other - has given me no trouble {I’m sure non whatsoever]. Instructions were found online, I think CNET making the suggestion if some peoples iTune collection was getting up there (movies and all). It was way more scarier than hard.
Any comments, opinions and suggestions are always welcome.
    Thank you in advance,

  • IPhone is not recognized by iTunes.  would like to backup/sync.  itunes is older version, using OSX.  itunes recognizes pics but not the device.  I am unable to DL the latest iTunes

Here is the deal, i have not been a good mac owner in the sense that i probably havent had proper updates throughout the years.  Hence, my itunes is out of date and my iphone doesnt get recognized by itunes (poor fella).  but the strange thing is that my other iphones were recognized.
Here is the kicker, my cloud has a backup on my iphone and my ipad recognized on the iPhone device taking up 587.2 mb.  IF i delete the ipad will it remove contacts and wreak havoc.

Your other phones were probably old enough that they worked with the version of iTunes you have. When you buy a device it requires the version of iTunes current at the time of purchase.  A new phone will require a new iTunes which won't run on your Powerbook.
I didn't think iCloud backed up to a device, the device backs up to iCloud.  Are you sure you aren't simply seeing backups in the Cloud and not something actually on your phone?

  • I have an older version of OSX ,I want to update versions but it keeps telling me I need OSX 10.9 yet i cannot find it can you help

I wish to update my macbook book. every time I try to update the software it asks for OS X 10.9
where do I find this version Of OSX

You first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. And, your computer must meet the requirements for both Snow Leopard and Mavericks.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • How can I access Address Book data from an older version of the application to transfer it to a newer version of Mac OS running on a second hard drive on the same MDD G4?

I installed a hard drive from one PowerPC Dual 1.25 GHz MDD into another one with an older version of the OS X.  all my Address Book data are on the older hard drive, from which I now boot the computer.  When I launch Address Book as an app on the hard drive with the newer version of the OS, I get an error message that says I cannot run the version of Address Book from the older hard drive on the newer OS.  How can I access the data on the older hard drive version of the Address Book app so that I can transfer it to the newer version of the app on the boot drive?  The "Import" functionality will not work. I will be grateful for any help I can get.  I would also like to uninstall the older version of OS X from the older hard drive.

Boot from the older version of OSX, then in AB use the File>Export>Export vCard after selecting all in AB.
Then boot from the new OSx & use the new AB to import that VCF file.

  • Can you run dreamweaver 11.5 with older versions of php?

I believe I understand from this group that dreamweaver 11.5 needs to run with php 5.3.  I have version 5.1.6.  Is there a way to edit a config file and run with an  older version of php?  And is so, could you please name the config file?
    Thanks!!

So i have code that was stripped down to 3 print statements.  Inside the print statements there is some html code.  With the dreamweaver 8, i see the output from the html code only as expected.  When I run with dreamweaver 11.5, I see the html code and all the "; print \n that was also in the statements like it is not interpreting the php correctly.  I backed out to dreamweaver 8 and it works again.  I'm at a loss as to why it stopped working with the upgrade.  Here's the code that's run on submit from the html page with the php in bold.
