Run time error CONVT_NO NUMBER.

I am getting the following error when i have writing the data.
I have reduced my itab-GAMNG to 5 characters
and i have a data which is *5000.
whenever this type of data comes i get the runtime error.
to avoid this error what should i do.
for eg:
data:idaylt(5) tYPE c.
idaylt = idaylt + itab_rep-pday
           *5000 + 5428.
the answer should be in 10428, but because of the * i am getting a runtime error. to avoid this * which type of datatype shd i use.
please help and guide.

GAMNG is total order quantity and when you are converting it 5 characters..surely if the quantity is more than 5 char it is going to overflow, indicated by an asterix '*'.
So in your case the particular record the quantity cannot be accomodated in 5 chars and hence the asterix. If you try and perform numeric calculation on it...it is surely to fail. As in your example also please note that the value of the outcome would not be 10428 because 5000 is not the right value.
The <b>best solution</b> is to increase the field for itab-gamng to 10 chars and it should be fine. (using numeric for the field is a better option)
