Run two versions of Mac OS Simultaneously

I'll skip the reason, as to not confuse the issue.
I have Mavericks installed on my Air, and Lion installed on an external drive. I can boot into either one, but I would like to run them both simultaneously. Is there VM software or something similar, that will allow me to run them both at the same time and switch back and forth?

Within the limits of Apple's End User Licenses, VMware Fusion will run everything from Snow Leopard (Server) to Yosemite.
Exactly what I am doing right now. I have VMware running two OS plus the host. Mac OS X *forbidden name* as the host, Mac OS X Mavericks and Windows 7 as VMware. I can tell you this, when you install the Mac OS X on the VMware, it will have a 4:3 resolution. In order to fix that, you'll have to manually install VMware Tools. For Windows VMware machines, it's installed automatically.
However, I do agree with the other two on battery life and RAM space needed. I can't tell you where the cut off point is, because I am on a Mac Mini with 16Gb of ram. So I haven't ran out... Only lost power but so did my whole neighborhood. If that was caused by the Mac Mini... I'm in trouble. lol

Yes, there is: on two separate computers.
You cannot run two versions of Dreamweaver simultaneously on
    the same
computer. They can coexist side by side, but the operating
    system will
not let you run them together.

  • Running two versions of java, is it possible?

Hi everyone, I've got two applications, both incorporate applets, but one uses 1.3 and the other uses 1.4. Im stuck as I need to run these two programs at the same time. The reason I cant just use 1.3 is because one uses JTree's which were introduced in 1.4 (am I correct?) . SO if thats the case, is there anyway to use two versions of java on the same machine.????????????
    Thank you

  • Does anybody know how to run two independent instances of Calendar simultaneously?

I've enabled the Debug mode, and have 2 windows open at the same time but can't get them to operate independently. Anybody done this?
The situation is that I work for a music school that uses iCal to keep track of music lessons for multiple tutors in real time, which sync to relevant tutor's iphones. We've just opened a second premises and would like to use the same system, but be able to monitor everything from either school.
Debug mode will let me run two instances of Calendar simultaneously, but removing tutors' calendars from one of the Calendar windows removes them from the other.
Basically I need one Calendar window open for each school, and for them to be independent from each other.
    Any takers?

How about creating a new "Calendar" with in the same Calendar app?
    Calendar App---> File---> New Calendar
Name each Calendar for each business location. Example if the original location is on Main St, name that Calendar Main St and the second on Broadway, name that calendar Broadway.
The other solution could be the same as above, but File---> New Calendar subscription. But I have no idea how that works though.

  • Running two versions of Firefox?

Some web-based applications that I use will not work properly with Firefox 3, but will work with Firefox 2. Can I have both versions of Firefox on my iMac and select between them, or will they interfere with each other? Would it help if I put one on my external hard drive and run it from there (if that is possible)?

you can have two versions of FF but you can't run them both from the same account as they will interfere with each other.
You can make a new user account and run FF3 from your main account and FF2 from the new account.
Would it help if I put one on my external hard drive and run it from there (if that is possible)?
no, that would make no difference at all.

  • Can I run two versions of the Mac operating system on one computer?

Can I designate one hard drive to run OS 10.6.8 and another to run Mountain LIon and switch between the two?
I use software that would not run on Mountain Lion and would break the bank to both upgrade and  buy a new Mac.

The EFI/firmware generally prevents you from running older OSX than what was shipped with the system.
My system can do what you propose because it came with SL, and can also run ML.
A new system that was designed to run Lion or ML will need to play very special and marginal tricks to run SL.
Some systems un der the Apple refurbished list are olde enough to run SL but new enough to run ML, and come with 1-year Apple warranties.

  • Running two versions of Safari

The 1.3.2 version of Safari that I'm running on OS X (10.4.9) is not compatible with the Blackboard classroom application that I need to access for a conference next week. The Blackboard website offers no solution. Is it possible to download an older Safari version while keeping the newer version? If yes, how do I download an older version, where do I find it, and where should both versions be stored? If no, what might be the issues involved in replacing a newer version with an older version?
    G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I access Blackboard fairly regularly with no issues, and I use Safari. What version does it say you need? Currently, I am using the Safari Beta with no problem. But before that I used Safari version 2. Does your version of Safari have a debug menu? If so you could try using the user agent, and selecting the browser the site calls for under that. Strange your running the latest version of OSX, but an old version of Safari. You could also download a free application called Tinker tool and enable the debug menu if it is not there.
Thanks for the advice, Hawaiian_Starman. The
Blackboard site is very specific about which versions
of Safari or Firefox it supports. Some of the oldest
versions are unsupported, but so, too, are some of
the newest. I will study the links you included, and
I will try the install DVD tomorrow. I'll let you
    know how it all works.
Again, many thanks for the ideas.

  • Running two OS on mac

Please can anyone help? I have a Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon running Snow Leopard, I have partitioned the drive using disk utility and I am trying to install OS 10.5.1 (Leopard no snow) on the 2nd partition, but I cannot get the OS Leopard disk to show/install.
The 2nd partition I created shows on the desktop, but not in the startup menu.

If the version of the OS you try to install won't support your Mac, it won't matter where you install it. You can use Mac OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs to see the minimum OS version & build that your Mac Pro will support.
For instance, if you have a Mac Pro (Early 2009) model, you may be able to install & run 10.5.6, build 9G3553, but no version earlier than 10.5.6 will work, period. Moreover build 9G3553 is only available on the system discs that shipped with some early 2009 models, so even the retail leopard disc that installs 10.5.6 will not work with it.
The reason for this is that earlier OS builds do not include hardware support for models released later. There is no workaround for this; the partition or HD, internal or external, must have a version capable of supporting the hardware installed on it or it will not be capable of running the computer stably, if at all.
You can verify this with Apple support UK if you still doubt this. Just make sure they know exactly what model you have, & refer them to Article: HT1159 if necessary.
If you do not know exactly what model you have, the simplest way to determine it is to go to Apple - Support - Technical Specifications & enter the serial number of your Mac in the "Search Tech Specs" box, then press return. Alternately, go to Apple - Support - Check Your Service and Support Coverage & enter the serial number there. Either method should show you the official name of your model.

  • Running two versions of OPA/OPM suite concurrently on one PC

    Hi all,
On my current project, I have a couple of rulebases in version 10.1 which have been deployed. However, a new business release/ stage in my project has started which means we are going to work in OPA 10.3 from this point on. The 'old' rulebases (10.1) will be integrated into the new environment eventually and will be maintained in 10.1 for the time being. So here's my question: would it be possible for me to run OPM 10.1 AND 10.3 next to eachother on my PC (without a virtual machine or something), so that I can view the old projects in 10.1 style and the new ones in 10.3? I don't want to simply upgrade, because the old rulebases need to be maintained in version 10.1 as well.
    Thanks & regards, Els

Different versions of 10.x cannot be run side-by-side on the same machine. Need to use virtual machines if you want to use different releases of 10.x.
See the note at the end of the 'new release' announcements for recent releases:
10.3.0: New Release: Oracle Policy Automation 10.3.0
10.3.1: New Release: Oracle Policy Automation 10.3.1
"Please note that Oracle Policy Modeling v10.3.0 cannot be installed side-by-side with previous releases of Oracle Policy Modeling v10.x"

  • I seem to be running two versions of firefox at the same time help!

I seem to be running an older version and a new version of firefox at the same time. I run the new version from startup (it forgets previous tabs from last session) and this sadly does not let me use back and forward arrow buttons so its a bit useless. Strangely when I pop an email window up, the older version of firefox appears with the last few tabs I had browsed.
disabling plugins stops browser starting in new version and back and forward arrows work ok.
    any help much appreciated!

You can install them both but there are a few steps to take.
When you install Firefox 4 use the custom installation option and choose a different location to install Firefox.
In order to use both versions, you need to create a new profile for Firefox 4 (Firefox stores user data in the profile). Using the same profile with different versions can cause problems. Once you create a new profile you can copy certain data such as bookmarks and passwords between them. You can also use Firefox Sync to keep the profiles synchronized. Finally, you will need to set up shortcuts to launch the correct profile for each version.
The following links show how to do this:

  • Is it possible to run two versions of fcpx ?

    Hi there,
I am running fcpx ver 10.08 and my OS is Mountain Lion 10.8.5.
After upgrsding to Maverick, can I run both fcpx 10.0.8 the 10.1 ? If I can, then I do not need to update/convert the existing projects and events library to the new structure ...
    Thanks

Hi there, I saw some youtube video, it says that after we update, FCPX will ask:
"Do you want to move the old projects and events to the trash ?
If you no longer need the old versions of your updated projects and events, click Move to Trash, To save them, click Save"
    So, the question are:
    1) if we click Save, our old Events folder and Projects folder will be saved in another folder ?
    2) if we click save, will this cause our disk drive to be doubled ?
    3) does this mean this is another chance to copy/backup the old Events folder and Projects folder ?
    4) after clicking Save, where will the files be saved ?
    5) after clicking Save, will the files in the Events folder and Projects folder be in hte form of old/exisiting structure or new structure ?
    Thanks

  • What is the best way to install two versions of Mac OS?

I am needing to install Tiger alongside Leopard on my computer. I have heard that if I install Tiger on the same HD as Leopard I will have to partition the HD. That would be an enormous pain since I would have to first erase my HD. Would it be ok to just install Tiger on a USB drive? I am only going to use a small amount of space since I will only need to install the OS and a few images files.

Hello, yes, you need either 2 different Partitiopns, or two different drives, but PPC makes don't boot OSX from USB drives as a rule, only Firewire drives.
The small amount of space isn't really true, OSX needs lots of Free Space for it's own use, less so with 10.4 than 10.5 though/
You can install another SATA 1.5 Gb/s compatible drive inside your G5 though quite easily...

  • Running two versions of iLife and keeping iMovie 6

    Actually two questions.
Is it possible to keep iLife 08 and also install Life 09 in the same computer.
And MOST importantly if I install the iLife09 package will I loose iMovie 06 which I have used so much and have so much material I am working on?

iMovie 06 won't be deleted but iLife 08 will. You could copy them to a separate hard drive and copy them back after 09 installation. But iLife09 will upgrade iPhoto library and iMovie project files, so chances are iLife08 won't work correctly.
