Run Windows CD-rom on MacBook Pro

I've received an interactive CD-rom from my new employer that contains a lot of training material. I assume there will be videos, audio files, and quizzes inside, but I'm unsure since the CD-rom didn't come with any literature to what's going to be inside. Without literature, I'm unsure whether it's a PC/Windows-based CD-rom, but I can only assume since it's not working on my MacBook.
I have a MacBook Pro, 13-inch, bought August 2012, OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2. When I insert the CD-rom, it shows up in my Finder Window sidebar but it doesn't open or run anything. I can see the contents of the disc, but again—nothing happens.
I've read many places online about installing Windows through the BootCamp assistant, but I don't want to go through all those steps (and purchasing Windows) simply to use this CD-rom for a couple weeks (at most).
Is there some sort of application I can download (preferably free) that will run the CD-rom on my MacBook?

Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. I'm planning to use my macbook pro to record music, but some of the programs I will be using are only compatible with Windows. I was told that it was possible to install & run windows XP onto my macbook pro by using Bootcamp. I just don't know how fullproof or problematic this might be, or if it has even been successfully attempted yet. Please help!

You can use XP with 10.7.x by installing XP when the Mac is operating from OS X 10.6.8. It can then be up graded to 10.7.x. Below I have reproduced the "Hatter " method instructions that I have used successfully. If your MBP cannot boot from and install 10.6.8 then it is a no go situation.
Upgrade 10.6.8 to 10.7 or 10.8
Use a maintenance utility like Yasu or Cocktail to prepare existing internal Mac OSX HDD.
Clone the internal Mac partition to an external HDD with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Restart from the cloned external HDD and select it as the startup volume via System Preferences / Startup Disk.
Install 10.7 or 10.8 on the cloned external HDD replacing 10.6.8 or 10.7.x.
Install 10.7.x or 10.8.x updates on the external HDD
Restart the updated 10.7.x or 10.8.x external HDD and test and adjust the preferences if needed.
When satisfied, clone only the 10.7.x or 10.8.x external HDD back to the existing internal Mac HDD replacing 10.6.8 or 10.7.x but don't include the recovery partition.
The Boot Camp partition will not be altered as to drive id which appeared to cause problems for a few people.
The recovery partition will be on the ext HDD and can be used for trouble shooting. A more convenient way to have the recovery/reinstallation environment is to create a Lion install USB thumb drive.

Native resolution problem on Boot Camp running Windows 8.1 on Macbook PRO 15 (2011)

Couple days ago I purchased a DELL U2414h display, and I came across some problems while trying to use it with Windows 8.1 on Boot Camp.
Everything works like a charm on MAC OS X and I get 1680x1050 resolution on my 2011 15 inch Macbook PRO, and 1920x1080 on the external DELL display.
The problem starts when I run Windows 8.1... I get my native resolution on the Macbook, but the maximum usable resolution on the external display is 1776x1000. There's an option to choose 1920x1080, but when I do that, the screen looks blurry. Is there any way to overcome this problem?
I'm using HDMI Adapter, and I installed all the drivers which were downloaded while installing the Boot Camp

No I haven't, but could it be the case? The same display with the same adapter works fine while running the MAC OS X.
But yeah, the adapter converts the mini display port to HDMI (as far as I know)

I really need to set up my macbook pro with the ability to run windows. This is primarily for the need of my job (i need to use Microsoft Publishe2003). I'm swamped with work and I really don't want to have to sit in my stuffy office this weekend to work. I know it's possible to do. Can someone point me in the right direction on this? I am getting my first MacBook Pro tomorrow, and i am just curious as to how i could run Windows only software on it. It will only be a couple of games and music software, but i dont have the OSX version, and i dont really want to buy a new version. I'd rather get a free program that does the same thing as Paralells, but if there is any other paid software that is reliable id like to know.

Problem is virtual machine software is about 1/5th the performance of booting directly into Windows via Bootcamp, this doesn't matter that much of your games are 2D, OpenGl driven and light weight, but 3D games you either want to direct install Windows via Bootcamp...

or better yet, get a Windows 7 64 bit tower with 4GB of RAM expandable to 8GB at least, this way you can upgrade your own video card.
3D video games advance, require video card upgrades, with the Mac platform there are either no video card upgrade ability or options. You can 3D game for a short time on a powerful Mac, but once the game gets updated your slow again and become fragbait.

If you are going both Bootcamp and virtual machine software, then I recommend VMFusion or Parallels Desktop, they have the ability to copy the installed Bootcamp Windows and use it as a another virtual machine Windows, also they have more options, ease of use and abilities than VirtualBox.
Edit: Wine is a opton, however you must check to see if the software your using will work with Wine, not a lot will or if it does it's glitchy.

Can I partition an external hard drive to run windows games on my Macbook Pro

I want to play windows games on steam but I am not sure if I want to partition my Macbooks hard drive. I heard you could partition external hard drives but didn't know if you could run games on that external hard drive. I have a lot of files on my computer and don't want to take time to move my files to the external hard drive, so can I buy the external hard drive and then partition it to run window games or do I have to partition my actual default hard drive?

Hi! If your macbook doesn't have a cd drive you need to have Windows 7 but an ISO image, you can't just copy the contents of the copy into a USB and expect it to work. Depending on the specific features that you think you need in a Virtual Machine, you should research the paid "Parallels" and "VMWare Fusion", and the free yet very capable "VirtualBox". I personally use VirtualBox because it does NOT include all of the Mac-to-VM interactivity features that the others do. For performance and security reasons, I specifically do not want my VM to be able to interact with my Mac OS host in any way other than copy and paste.
On your Windows VM, if you are running windows 8.1, and are not logged in as an administrator as your primary account, then the built in Windows Defender is a perfectly suitable for anti-malware protection. If you are running Windows 7 (or 8.1) and want additional protection I would recommend "BitDefender Free" as it has great protection yet has a very light-weight performance hit.

I know this doesn't help you much, but, I think you have to see if your Mac pro does audio out via HDMI. I don't even know if mine does via DVI. I think it may have to do with the adapter. Try going into Audio MIDI and setting the digital out to multichannel
and using the toslink cable for now. Lemme see...apparently DVI does not carry audio at all. Hm. apparently monoprice could be helpful? If I understand what you're saying correctly: you want to take DVI and multichannel audio via the Toslink and have it all go out over HDMI, right? Apple provides their framework for Windows to run on a Mac, a piece of software called a Hybrid MBR that bridges the gap between how Windows reads the drive partition table (MBR) and EFI/GUID partition table that Mac's use.
It doesn't mean Windows can't run on your Mac, a third party solution called rEFIt will also bridge the gap and allow booting of more that just Windows, Linux as well for a triple booting computer.
Your hardware has to meet the other requirements the second and third operating system needs as as being able to install drivers that will work for your hardware, especially the fans or they will run loud and fast by default.

This above is a advanced procedure which requires knowledge how computers and various operating systems, drive formats and so forth work.
I even admit I don't know everything myself, but I experiment on a separate piece of Mac hardware (out of warranty/AppleCare) designed for this purpose so in case something screws up I'm not taking down my only machine and can use the other to get online and find solutions.
There is a very high potential for losing your data if your using advanced/non-Apple methods to install Windows on your only Mac where Apple doesn't support it. Also one shouldn't be doing this on Mac hardware that is under AppleCare or warranty as it might be voided. Proceed at your own risk and education.

You have several options.
1, Use a Virtual Machine like Vmware, Parallels etc... to Create a Virtual Windows Installation and Run your program in there. A Virtual MAchine will runn in a Window on your Desktop and share your Mac's resources RAM HD space processor. Your MAc desktop will still be available while you run Windows install.

My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
- My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:

I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:

The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ? Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.

And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a mac-model device ID string that specifies yes. An unnecessary hurdle.
