Run Windows on linux device?

Hello,
I am not a programer/developer at all and need some advice.
I own a Archos 5 Internet Tablet that runs android.
I have the option to convert it to a linux device for development.
The company says it has all the requirements for a linux computer, but portable.
So my question is, if I convert it to run linux, is there a simple way to make it run any windows on it?
Please let me know, it would be great if I could have a portable windows device without buying something new.

Your question is really better asked on a Windows forum as it's related to anything Apple or compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows, which is the focus of this forum:

  • Running Windows and Linux on my Laptop

    Hey all,
I own a Dell XPS 15, mid 2012 model. Last week I replaced my computers 750GB hard drive with a Solid State drive (240GB).
I have all the necessary discs in order to reinstall my Windows 7 operating system onto the hard drvie. After it's installed with all the drivers I am going to upgrade the operating system to Windows 8.1.
However, I am interested in running Linux on the computer. Right now I'm leaning between Ubuntu, Fedora, or Debian.
So my main questions I how do I go about installing a Linux partition on my computer with Windows 8.1 running on it as well? All help and advise will be greatly appreciated.

  • Considering buying MacBook, wish to run windows and Linux with VMware

    Considerations:
Which MacBook pro, do they all support virtualization? I7 MacBook pro Retina display was the device I was considering.
What are the other considerations, storage capacity, HD or flash, or simply size?
The operating system I assume would be mountain lion with the mac, I assume thats not an issue.
VMware was the virtualiszation software I was considerring, any others.
Just basic starting information needed, in order to even see if it's possible and which path to take.

Yes. And with these modern multicore processors, you can dedicate a few cores to the guest OS to improve performance. One thing you must have is lots of RAM; enough to keep both the OS X host and all the guest systems happy. Since a new Mac will sport Mountain Lion inevitably, 8GB is a minimum choice. Remember you can upgrade the RAM (and drive) with third party alternatives far cheaper than what Apple sticks you for it.
Virtualization options are Parallels Desktop (most expensive), VMware Fusion (intermediate) or Oracle VirtualBox (free). The two commercial options are naturally more polished than the freebie, but it is fast catching up.

  • Native WIndows or Linux on XServer Hardware

Does anyone know if I can run Windows or Linux on the XServe natively without Leopard?
    -Thanks

Hello Test Bed Fred, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
Assuming you are asking about Intel based current or recent Xserves you can run Windows using virtualization like Parallels Server BME, but you can't simply install it on the machine. You can also install and run a number of *nix flavors virtualized if you want to do that.
I'm sure there are *nix installs that can be run directly on the metal - the EFI boot is the only real technical hurdle that needs to be overcome. All that being said unless the machines are free I wouldn't generally choose to do this because you're paying Apple for software you won't use to get the hardware, but you can do whatever you want.

  • How to run an application on windows mobile 6 device ?

    Hi everybody,
How can you run an application on a windows mobile 6 device with the new SDK 3.0 ?
Can you launch a MIDLET like any other program ? or running your MIDLET on windows mobile 6 is only for testing while you are developing.
When you finished your MIDLET, can you copy the jar file to the mobile device with windows mobile 6 and to run it anytime ?
    Thank you.

Its simply a matter of opinion, but I'm 3-months-in, developing for WM5 + WM6 and the only usable solution I've found that has the correct look and feel on Windows Mobile as well as JSR support is IBM's J9.
It's not free, but I searched high and low, and it's the only product that I was happy with.
    Here's a [screenshot of it running my application on WM6 emulator|http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9hmP3Ho0t14/S7eDTXfkE9I/AAAAAAAAAa0/ISZ-HohZQDs/s1600/wm6.png] .
Here's a [quick article I wrote for it.|http://fatbuttlarry.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2010-02-16T11%3A34%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=7] Remember, it's NOT free. Pricing is very fair, but you'll have to license it to use and distribute it.

My iTunes suddenly stopped working and doesn't recognize any of my devices and gives me a AMD error. I've tried several times to uninstall all Apple programs and reinstall to no avail. I'm running windows 7 on a Dell laptop. It worked fine for years then I decided to update my iPhone 4S and it didn't recognize it or any other iPod or iPad.
    Can someone please help ?

I am having all sorts of problems with 9.1.1.Crashes and not only iTunes but I have to restart all the time.

"Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services"

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • How to run Windows on top of Linux

Just an idea for those of you who are using Linux but still need to run Windows XP or Vista for one reason or another.
When I bought my machine, I immediately reformatted the HD getting rid of Vista and all of that other prebundeled junk that made my system run like a sick 3-legged puppy. I then installed Debian Linux. The only thing that did not work was that silly "Winmodem" which I did not need anyway.
Now here's the really neat thing: I've run both Windows XP, Win 2K and other flavors of Linux as a "guest:" on top of my "host" Linux through Virtualbox which creates what's known as a virtual machine (VM) for the "guest" OS's (in my case Windows XP and 2k, and a couple of different versions of Linux). It works like a charm and it's free too!
The only problem is you can't play games through the VM, so you'll still have to dual-boot to Windows or use another machine for playing games. The same applies for any Windows application that requires hardware video acceleration. I can however play music through the VM and I can watch movies and run just about everything I still need that Linux does not yet provide (except for those stupid games, argh!). Supposedly there's a solution to the video acceleration problem, but it's not yet available for VBox and it's under heavy development so it's a new thing that may not work well.
One important note, for best VM performance you should make sure that you buy a CPU that supports either AMD-V or Intel-VT, but it'll still work without just slower (but still very acceptable) and you won't be able to run a 64-bit guest OS. Virtualbox will run under Windows, so you can do the reverse and run Linux through the VM on top of Windows, and you can also run any combination of supported "guest" OS's (eg, Linux on LInux and Windows on Windows is possible). It's great even for just experimenting with different system setups. For example, you can backup a whole virtual machine setup (it's only one file) and do tests that may irreversibly damage the Windows registry - if you completely break the system, no problem, you just restore from the back up and try again. This is a real big time saver for me.
There are alternatives to VBox, such as Xen, VMWare, KVM (requires amd-V or Intel-VT), and a few others. At this point I've only used VBox, so I can't say which is best, but VBox sure was easy to get up and running and it's been working great for me.
Well that's my two-cents. Have fun with it.

It works fine if the image is on a FAT32 partition but then you are limited to 4gb file size.

I would do 1 thing at a time:"now the micropohone is not working in facetime"
Here is what you can check to get your mike working in facetime:
    1. Hold down option while you click on the speaker next to time a. date,
under input Device see if your mic is marked. If not: ✔️
    2. Click the apple top left/System Prefs./click on the Sound speaker:
    under Input highlight microphone.
    3. When you have factime on go to video above scroll and see if your mic is marked ✔️
If that does not get it to work there is more you can check:
    (Utilities/Audio, midi setup)
For any other audio device you do this for input and output.
If you get stock post back

I will soon be purchasing a new PC running Windows 7. I need to know how to migrate my iTunes Library and apple devices to the PC. Is there a previously published support document on this topic? Thank You.

Connect a blank powered external drive to the PC.
Right click on the Disk in the File manager and choose format: exFAT
(if it's a XP machine, first install exFAT from Microsoft and reboot)
navigate to your user account folders on the PC and drag and drop copy (or copy and paste) to the external drive.
(if a program has your files, then export them out first)
Hook up the drive to the Mac, and transfer files to the desktop or to their same appropritate folders.
Import photo's into iPhoto program, import music into iTunes etc and they will manage those files.
You can continue to use the external exFAT drive between Mac's and PC's
Do not format the drive NTFS or FAT, NTFS can't be written too by the Mac and FAT can't hold over 4GB sized files.
If you format exFAT on the Mac, it likely won't work correctly on the  PC.
"Migration" type programs are a utter waste of time and effort between PC's and Mac's for the fact that only certain files (and no programs or anything else) will work between them, also it's a hassle and takes too long. So don't even bother with it.

  • Running Windows 7 via Bootcamp - USB Device Not recognized.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit via Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro (2012 non-retina display). USB devices are not being recognized within Windows 7 (USB Device Not Recognized error).
I have done some research and tried a few possible solutions but nothing has worked so far. Here is what I have tried:
    - Uninstalling all USB drivers within windows and then restarting to let Windows re-install the drivers.
    - Uninstalling Intel 3.0 USB Host Contoller and restarting Windows.
    - Repairing the drivers using Bootcamp setup.
    - Uninstalling bootcamp and re-installing bootcamp services.
The USB drives are working fine within OS X, just having issues in Windows.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

3.0 is on your OS X DVD. Clearly spelled out in the guide in Boot Camp Assistant, and here -
www.apple.com/support/bootcamp : manuals, look for 10.6 pdf version.
3.0 is pre-requisite for any other
OS X comes with Boot Camp Assistant and you access 3.0 drivers while in Windows.

  • Java program runs differently on Windows and Linux

    Hi!
I would like to run a java application (which is written and run on windows platform) on linux platform. I don't know wether it is possible or not, but I tired on the following way:
I have made a small java application. It worked correctly on windows (I developed it on windows). I copied first only the class file (Start.class) to the linux machine (which has exactly the same JDK as windows machine). When I type the command:
