RUN WINDOWS WITH DAMAGED GRAPHIC CHIP

Hi guys.  My macbook pro has a damaged graphics chip. (the high performance one.) This is no problem running ox lion as I picked better battery performance in settings.
However.  When ever I try installing Windows 7 via bootcamp the system crashes with a pixellated or multi coloured screen. I presume this is because its selecting the best performance chip on the mac (the knackered one)... Is there a way of running windows on boot camp and getting around this problem.. I ask because I have a need to run a custom program that only runs on windows at this time....

I've asked your question be moved to the Boot Camp forum, where someone is more likely to have experience with the issue.  I strongly recommend getting a motherboard replacement.
If you are in the U.S.  http://www.dttservice.com/ often is cheaper than Apple for out of warranty machines since they only replace the part that is malfunctioning.
http://www.ifixit.com/ offers some do it yourself options.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ does too.
And lastly, there is this tip on the multiple ways of running Windows on the Mac, which may offer a way less sensitive than Boot Camp.

  • System crashes after waking; problems with distnoted, graphics chip error

I am running 10.3.9 on a Dual 1 GHz G4, with 1.5 GB SDRAM, a GeForce4 Ti 4600 LCD display, and a LaCie 1394 external drive. I have recently started to put my computer to sleep at night, rather than leaving it running 24 hours a day (I also installed sleepwatcher, to allow me to put my computer to sleep remotely, and anacron, to allow the nightly system maintenance jobs to continue to run). This was working fine for about a week, but for the last two days, when I woke my computer up in the morning, I got kernel panics after a few minutes. First some aspects of the display would start to get mangled (e.g. strange lines appearing, some text that I typed not showing up, icons in the dock looking speckled, etc.), then some applications would stop responding, and then a minute or so later I would get the feared kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer" in multiple languages).
This problem only seems to occur after the computer has been asleep for a long time (I've only experienced it after it's been asleep for 12 hours or so, and not when it's only been asleep for a few minutes). The only thing I can think of that I've changed in the last few days is an AppleScript that mounts my external LaCie drive (using "do shell script diskutil mountDisk ...") before backing up my files - using FoldersSynchronizer - then putting my computer to sleep (before I was never UNmounting this drive, so I didn't have to mount it in the AppleScript - I was still using the script to back up the files then put the computer to sleep).
I have tried running Apple's Disk Utility (both to repair the permissions, and to repair the disk), DiskWarrior (to rebuild my startup disk), fsck, and TechTool Deluxe. None seemed to reveal any major errors except the "Surface Scan" in TechTool, which failed, presumably because of media defects in the disk (but my understanding is that fixing this would require reformatting my disk, something that I only want to do as a last resort).
My system.log shows the following, from the time I woke my computer to the time I restarted (I've highlighted some suspicious-looking lines). It seems like the problem might either be occurring in distnoted, or with the graphics chip. Any thoughts on how I can determine the cause of the problem?

Yesterday's crash looks similar, except that the Graphics chip error occurs 13 seconds before the distnoted error (rather than after the distnoted error), and rather than a crash of "MouseWorks Background" there was a crash of "WindowServer". Any thoughts on what might be causing this problem? I will continue to test the effects of changing various aspects of my configuration, but since I can only get the problem to occur once a day (after my computer has been asleep for a while), it might take me a few days or weeks to track the problem down through blind trial-and-error.
    Thanks!
Dual 1 GHz G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5 GB SDRAM, GeForce4 Ti 4600 LCD display, LaCie 1394 external drive

After a little experimentation, I've managed to narrow the problem down a little, but still haven't resolved it. My computer still crashes almost every time I wake it up after a long sleep (multiple hours). Things work fine for a few minutes, but then some aspects of the display start to get mangled (e.g. strange lines appearing, text becoming distorted, etc.), then some applications start crashing and the system hangs. Sometimes I get a kernel panic, but not always - but I always need to reboot to solve the problem.
The errors in the system log files differ from crash to crash, but the one thing that seems to be consistent is that I get a "Graphics chip error". Is this usually a hardware problem, or can it be due to a software problem? Sometimes this graphics chip error is the first error to occur, although sometimes an application will crash a few seconds before the graphics chip error is recorded in the system.log.
In my original post, I suggested that the problem might be due to an AppleScript that mounts an external drive. I have since determined that this is NOT the cause of the problem.
Any thoughts on what might be going on?

after upgrading to mountain lion i keep getting an error message saying my startup disc is full. it shouldnt be full because there is barely anything on there and i was running windows with bootcamp prior to this with no issues. my computer now freezes and programs close randomly. The usual command for opening windows with bootcamp doesnt work. once in restarted my computer after it froze and it rebooted in windows automatically. i really just want to know if there is a way to take the upgrade off my laptop because it is very annoying.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

Will running windows with bootcamp effect my macbook pro's overall speed ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In some cases, there may be slowness in OS X because of the lack of free space. However, you shouldn't note this and in most of cases, performance is the same in Windows and OS X after installing Windows, more in the case of a MacBook Pro with Retina display.
The only thing you have to worry is to give Windows the necessary space. The MacBook Pro with Retina display hasn't got a lot of storage

  • Compatibility with notebooks graphic chips

    Hello,
I am about to buy a notebook. Today I had a short conversation with the local stockist and I will talk to him tomorrow again. It's also part of a company that serves a lot of the local companies with IT solutions. They work with Linux systems too.
I said that I would not like an onboard graphic chip like the intel X4500. He said to me that they would cause less problems than the graphic chips by nvidia or ati/amd.
Since I used Linux, which is almost 4 years now I am very active on reading blogs, forums and other articles about Linux. I rather observed quite the opposite to this. Performance wise graphic chips by nvidia and ati are ahead, even a small middle class chip that's sure.
But that was not the main point we were talking about.
The most important point was compatibility. He said that ati and nvidia driver cause more trouble on linux than intel.
From what I read about it in the past is that all drivers, especially ati and intel are improving a lot. If I search different sources for experiences with intel, ati and nvidia graphic chips I find more problems with intel but that can just be a coincidence.
But overall I think in terms of compatibility it does not matter anymore what type of graphic chip you choose.
Can somebody maybe enlighten me a bit?
At the moment I am considering buying the Dell Studio 15 with an ATI 5450. This Studio 15 seems to be a decent relation of price and performance considering the fact that I don't want to use it for gaming in first line.
I hope some people can tell me a little bit more about graphic chips on linuxs.
    Thanks and Regards!

My experience is first of all, I would not recommend ati.  I have read that ati has gotten better but I have failed to see it in action.  I have a 9250 that support was dropped for long ago and an x200 in my laptop and support was dropped for that last year.  Thanks to the open source community I have a stable arch linux running with the open source driver.  However, no open source driver will ever give you the 3d acceleration that proprietary drivers will.  I have heard good things about new intel cards.  I have never owned an intel graphics card.  I read that the drivers are stable but not capable of 3d acceleration. I am not sure of the details on this. I will note that there was a particular release of an intel driver that was completely broken.  I had to use fbdev to get X11 up on that system.  I am not sure of the driver version or card, I only know I googled the problem and it was in fact a bug.  I have an nvidia 6200le and the proprietary drivers were much easier to setup than ati and it has been very stable for 3 years.  Although the 6200le is not a newer card nvidia is still supporting cards older than mine.  Thank you Nvidia.  So, despite all the rumors and reviews, if I am looking for a performance laptop, I would not consider anything except Nvidia.  Hope that helps.

  • Imac 13,2 with 3 RAM chips instead of 4 RAM Chips. Is there any hard data supporting the fact that the iMac will not run optimally with only 3 chips versus 4?

I have a imac 13,2 with 3 of the 4 memory(RAM) slots filled. Two with 4gb chips and one with an 8gb chip. Is there any reports or statistics to support using matching pairs(4 chips) of ram versus running 3 chips? Is the machine running optimally w/3 chips? Or does it not matter with these newer imacs as each RAM slot is fully iundependent of each other therefore getting the most out of each chip no matter if 3 slots are filled or 4 slots are filled?
    Thanks for any reponses.

There were some models which would not boot at all if a certain slot was not occuplied:

  • Antivirus for iMac running Windows with Boot Camp

I am running Windows on my Mac using Boot Camp. If I install an antivirus, will it protect me when I am logged into windows? Or do I need to install an additional antivirus when I am on Windows?

You only need anti-virus protection for the Windows environment, though this will likely bring out a fire storm of debate.
The most susceptible system is Windows so protect yourself there.

  • Can a mac running windows with Boot Camp be found by Find My iPhone

I'm running Windows on my MacBook Pro via BootCamp and I'm using the Find My iPhone iCloud app on my iPad. My MacBook Pro cannot be found by Find My iPhone, it's labeled as off-line, even though it's connected to the Internet.
So my question is this: is there a way for Find My iPhone to see my Mac while running Windows. Note, I've already got iCloud for Windows installed on the Windows side of my MacBook Pro (and Find My Mac turned on on the Mac side, and while on the Mac side, it's always found, no problem.)

If FindMyiPhone is enabled, even if the iPhone is off or not on wifi/3G, it will still show in FindMyiPhone under Devices, though it cannot be located.
If it is not showing No Devices, FindMyiPhone is not enabled.
If it does show in Devices and shows Offline, FindMyiPhone is enabled but it is off or not on wifi/3G.
This is one way to remove the activation lock if you do not have the device. Delete it from FindMyiPhone in iCloud.

I fell for what I thought was a Firefox update but since installing it, when entering a URL, I am redirected back to original computer log in / password entry box. If I use my browser window drop down list I can get into something like Facebook and move around but as soon as I try to type any letter into a 'comment' box, I am redirected to both a Windows Explorer type page showing my various drives and another Window from my Start/Run with the dialog box open with cmd entered in it already. Certain typed letters don't show up at all when trying to enter a 'comment' on Facebook while various letters get various different responses. It is impossible to enter any URL or use my browser other than the items in my drop down. Once there, say to my bank account, I cannot enter any password as I am immediately redirected to someplace else upon trying to type a letter or character. I don't know how to get my browser working. I have tried IE as well and the same thing happens. All started after the supposed upgrade of Firefox. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you.

  • Use parallels to run windows with iMac as monitor

This is a complicated question, so please read everything. I have a new late 2012 Mac Mini. On the Mac Mini, I had MS Windows installed with Bootcamp so I could run a 3d cad program. I want to use my iMac 21 inch computer in target display mode as the monitor for this. I hooked up the mini to the iMac with a thunderbolt cable and started both machines up. The Mac Mini is set to boot up in the windows side of the partitioned hard-drive. Because of this, the iMac doesn't respond to the mini when hitting the command/F2 key to try to place the iMac in target display mode. I could try to start up the Mini on the apple side of the partitioned hard-drive and see if I can get target display mode to work with the iMac, but that doesn't solve my problem, which is, that I need to use the windows side on the mini with the iMac as the display.
So, I'm wondering if I switch from Bootcamp to Parallels to run the windows partition, will this solve the problem. I'm thinking, that because you can switch back and forth between the window and apple partitions in Parallels without having to reboot, I can start both computers up, place the iMac in target display mode, then switch to the windows side and work there... all using a thunderbolt cable.
I've been on the phone with Apple support, and they don't know for sure if this will work, but they think it's worth a try. I'd rather do this than have to buy and use a monitor for the Mini. HAS ANYONE DONE THIS AND HAD SUCCESS??? IS THE CABLE AN ISSUE HERE? IF THIS DIDN'T WORK, DID YOU FIND ANOTHER WAY?
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed light on this.

  • What is the differences between running windows with parallels or boot camp?

I am a Drafting and Design student so I need Windows for AutoDesk programs Revit and Inventor. I have a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz 16GB.

    nkriss wrote:

A couple of differences which don't often get mentioned:
First, in Bootcamp, the size of the partition you create for Windows is fully taken over by Bootcamp. In a virtual machine, you can give Windows 100GB for the C: drive but if you're only using 20GB on it, that's about what gets taken up on your SSD - it expands and contracts based on actual use.
Second, a virtual machine is a file like most other files (actually, it's a collection of files in a folder) and that means you can duplicate it for backup purposes. You can also take snapshots to try things out and restore to the snapshot's state to eliminate everything done since the snapshot was taken. Try that with a real PC, or Bootcamp, which is pretty much the same thing.

  • Is Flash CS4 not compatible with Intel Graphics (laptop)? Really?

    Hi!
I'm graphic and animation designer. My company buys CS4 suite
including Photoshop & Flash. And I'm buying a laptop and now
choosing between one having Intel Graphics and another with ATI
Radeon. Intel has some features I need, but after googling, finding
    and reading this topic:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.59b6c473/0
till the end, I see it does not fully support Photoshop
CS4!!! I also need Flash CS4 working, so does it support Flash?
So can you still recommend me buying intel integrated-laptop
or should I take an ATI Radeon powered one? I need Flash working
without annoying compatibilites problems. I don't want to buy an
Intel one, if it is not Photoshop- and Flash- compatible....
    Thank you!

It's important you understand what "fully support" means in
    this
context. According to Eric Palmer's Dec 4 reply (12:11pm),
    Photoshop CS4
does, in fact, run reliably on systems with Intel graphics.
    Eric purports
to be an Intel employee, but obviously there's no proof of
    that.
Regardless, his assertion jibes with with I hear from
    colleagues with Intel
    graphics chips.
It's not as if Photoshop suddenly fails if you happen to
    choose, say,
red from the color swatches. It's not as if Photoshop fails
    to export GIFs
on Intel machines. The only thing you're missing -- and this
    is true for me
too, even though I don't have Intel equipment -- is
    functionality that
relies on OpenGL. One of these features, for example, lets
    you rotate the
canvas while you work on a file. I don't mean rotate the
    image itself ... I
mean rotate the actual work space without resampling the
    image, just as if
you were rotating the piece of paper on which you were
    drawing. Granted,
that sounds like a neat feature (I'd like to experiment with
    it, myself!),
    but it's not a deal-breaker.
As far as I've seen, the Flash CS4 authoring tool doesn't
    rely on any
    OpenGL-accelerated features.

  • Windows 8 Pro graphics card driver

Speaking for the touchsmart users who have the same issue, im using the Touchsmart 600-1050 we need to know if there is a graphics card update being worked on now. Windows 8 Pro runs only with the graphics card disabled but runs very choppy, the touchscreen works fine along with multitouch. There is no excuse for why windows 8 pro has no graphics card update from hp. Nvidia said that hp customises the g200 inside of the touchsmart pc's. Please reply with whether or not there is going to be an upate to the touchsmart pc, without any other comments like it hasn't been tested yet. We the customers tested it for you and demand the update that it can process. If my laptops intel hd graphics can run windows 8 than the g200 can run it on 3 monitors so it would only make sense to satisfy exicsting customers over finding new ones cause when windows 9 comes out im sure we will be right back to where we started.

    IMO..........
Windows 8 will be (is) what Vista was to XP.
Software matures every 2 generation, such as what Windows 7 is to XP.
    Afterall, W7 is Vista SP3........
All of you W8 people that are having problems, you jumped on the band wagon too quickly.
    You all are beta testers.
You REALLY should of skipped W8, and waited for all the software to develop and mature, become available, and went with W9 when it's available.
$40.00 for the W8 upgrade,,,,,you actuall paid them to test it so they could finish developing it and the nessary software?!
You couldn't pay me enough to do that for them......
Revert back to W7, sit back and enjoy a wonderfully working OS and software, let some other person go through the greef of testing it for them.
    IMO..........

  • Run Windows from External HD

I have a 15 inch June 2012 Macbook Pro Core i7 with 500GB. I want to run windows with bootcamp with an external hard drive. Is it possible to boot natively into windows with a bootcamp partition from a 500GB USB 3.0 External HD? I dont have the HD or windows disk yet because I want to make sure this works. If it doesnt with boot camp, is there a 3rd party app that can do this or is it possible with a SSD? I dont want to emulate this, I want native windows.
PS I dont have much space left on my internal 500GB HD, but I do have enough for some apps.

    Mr. Mayonaise wrote:
by emulate i mean i dont want it on vmware, i want it to run fast. If you can put the files on the external HD and if it runs fast, than ok, but i really want it to run fast. i want to play games.
If you search through this forum for MacBook Pros overheating, I think you'll find that the MBP isn't the ideal laptop for playing games. And from what I've read, temperature control is even worse when running Windows in BootCamp.
