Runaway application switcher

I've been meaning to ask about this for a couple of years, at least.
On more than one MacBook Pro and with both Leopard and Snow Leopard, I occasionally have an odd behavior result when invoking the application switcher with command-tab.
What happens every now and then is that I hold down command and tap tab to get to the previously used application/window. I'm still holding down the command key, probably, but I quickly release the tab key.
Instead of stopping along the horizontal list of apps at the first app after the one I'm currently using, the switcher insanely cycles through the whole list, left to right, and it keeps going until I hit escape, I think. Releasing command and hitting command-tab again might fix it, but I can't remember and I can't set off the behavior at will.
Like I said, I have seen this happen on multiple computer and multiple keyboards. It just happened a little while ago on an external keyboard but I've also seen it happen on the laptop's keyboard.
My guess is that it has to do with a conflict with another utility program I have, like Launchbar. But I've never been able to narrow it down. Anyone else encounter this weirdness?

I've been having the same issue since 10.5.6. Downloading and installing the Combo Updater for 10.5.7 unfortunately does not fix the problem.
Deleting the Finder plist file is only a temporary solution, the problem will return.
Other people on different forums are reporting this as fairly wide-spread issue, but no one has a permanent fix. A restart is the best option at this point.
One question: Are you by any chance running TinkerTool?

  • Application Switcher Not Working correctly

Selecting a program opens desired program properly(as displayed in Menu Bar) but will not open the corresponding program's open windows until selecting program in a Mission Control desktop. After selecting the desktop to which the program is attached and clicking on the program then the open windows will be properly displayed.
Application Switcher seems to work correctly and open the corresponding windows within a desktop if programs are attached to a particular desktop but will not open the corresponding open windows if the programs are located on different desktops - i.e. Mail Windows will not open if Safari windows are displayed because programs are on two different desktops.

Cool. Learn a new trick every day... It works on my English keyboard (with the Q).
Maybe the "oddity" has been fixed and it is no longer A on the French keyboard, but Q, as it should be.

  • Application switcher not working as expected

I am using the French localisation of Leopard. Using Application switcher (ie Cmd-Tab) I was able on Tiger to quit a running app by pressing A (an oddity due to the AZERTY / QWERTY differences). This does not work any more and I cannot quit an application from Application switcher. Any advice?

  • Application Switching not working in Spaces

I'm having some trouble with Spaces and Application switching. Randomly the feature that switches the space to the right Application when you click on the dock stops working. The menu bar will change to the right application but the window and space will stay the same. Clicking the Window menu and selecting the window you want to go to doesn't work either. This problem also persists if you are in another Application like Safari and another application is behind it. You click the application in the dock and the menu bar changes, but Safari (or whatever program you were in before) stays in the front. The only way to switch is to manually click the spaces button on the dock and select the window you want which can get really annoying. A computer restart fixes the problem but I don't like having to restart my computer every other day or so.

Well, my mouse issue turned out to be a Logitech Control Center/ Leopard issue. It was resolved with an update from Logitech but Spaces is still buggin' hard. When I try to switch spaces using Spaces this is what happens:
I'm in Mail (space 3) and I wish to switch to Safari (space 1)
I open spaces, click on space one and things become slow-motion the menu bar switches to Safari but the window switches to iTunes (space 2)
This stops with a restart but eventually it starts happening again. I switch fine if I click the application icon in the dock but not if I use Spaces.
Irrelevant of this bug but another recent freakout occurred when iTunes stopped dragging and dropping so I restarted. I was greeted with a hang on the grey screen with the black wheel for several hours. I eventually got it to power down again. I then pulled the power cord from the back, reconnected it and it restarted. All was fine until the return of the SpaceBug a few minutes ago.

  • Finder, Doc, Application switcher all crash in 10.5.2

A few weeks ago I noticed that my lower ram slot in my Powerbook G4 15" 1.3G stopped reading the ram. I did a quick search and found that there was a recall for a similar problem in other powerbooks. I thought I could get away with buying a 1G chip and installing it in the upper slot. This worked for about a day.
I also recently downloaded the most recent security updates and printer updates and whatever else...
I'm not sure any of this is related.
Here's my problem now... My computer starts up fine, although it looks like the blue screen is up at startup for a few more seconds than it used to be. I then have a window of 1-5 minutes to work. During this window of time I can open applications (mostly Word, Excel, Firefox), work in them, switch between them, etc...
Every time after 1-5 minutes I stop being able to switch between applications and the menus in the menu bar stop working (the headers are visible, but nothing happens when they are clicked). When I push command-tab to switch I get an alert noise and application switcher does not come up. If I click on an open window for a different application or even the finder, it does not switch. When I click on other applications in the doc they do not open.
If I quit the one application that is allowing me to work in it, my menu bar disappears, and my computer is crashed. The ONLY way to get out of this, once it happens, is to hold down the power key and do a hard reboot.
Any help would be appreciated. I am completely stumped and want to hold onto this computer for as long as I can.

I am suspicious that your hard drive is bad. Can you boot from the OSX DVD and run some of those apps normally? Tried the Apple hardware Test (AHD) from the OS DVD?
If you had a clone of your internal drive on a Firewire external drive, you could boot from that to test. If you don't, I recommend you do as a backup of all your data as well as a trouble shooting tool.

  • Mail and contacts not showing in application switcher

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, mail and contacts are not showing in the application switcher.
So,  I have to re-open mail and contacts if I switch screens - it is absolutely infuriating because I constantly switch screens when I work.
Does anyone else have the same issue?    My mail and contacts are on exchange server,  which may have something to do with it?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Exposé / application switching broken

I seem to be having a bit of trouble with exposé / application switching, particularly when selecting reveal 'all windows'. Currently this command will reveal all 'application windows' (open within the current application), despite a few button / hot corner tweaks.
I think the problem lies deeper than exposé, as a list of my woes include:
    1. Failure to reveal all windows (as above)
    2. When 'cmd-tab'-ing, an open application often disappears from the list- this has lead me to cmd-tab twice to get to said application which is somewhat frustrating
    3. When cmd-tabbing (or using the dock) to switch applications, the background applications all hide automatically.
I have deleted the dock preferences .plist, and also the system preference .plist, but this does not alter the said erratic behaviour. The problem is specific to my user account- when I log in as someone else everything works perfectly. I do not use Spirited Away, or any auto-hiding add-on: all I use is Quicksilver and the problem persists despite shutting QS down.
In short, I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    Not so fast, Fiachra!
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.8 Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before updateand repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Can Application Switcher Be Assigned To The Magic Mouse ?

I have been a Might Mouse user now since it was released and it's been a very productive mouse... allowing me lots of options while I navigate my finder and files... and assigned Application Switcher to the track ball nipple was for me a must have feature... and now my whole workflow has now become based on this simple feature. I recently purchased a new MacPro 12 Core with Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. The Magic TrackPad I just can't get my fingers adjusted to... so I have counted that out... but the new Magic Mouse I like... I like the way it feels in the hand... I like the wireless feel about it... but the lack of the track ball is proving a difficult adjustment. I have started using CMD TAB but that's proving less effective as I'm sometimes getting mixed up with key stroke shortcuts for Adobe Acrobat... for Quitting etc...
I need to decide what mouse to use... as switching between both is even more confusing. Is the Magic Mouse the absolute future... so should I just stick with that... and adapt... or go back to me seamless Mighty Mouse workflow.
If I could assign the Application Switcher to the Magic Mouse I would stay with it I think.... it's the lack of support for the key feature is proving to be the deal breaker.
Anyone have any comments, advice, suggestions. All comments would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Anthony

    Hi-
Can't predict the future, but I understand the dilemma with regards to which is a better mouse.
For app switching, there is a way to do such, but at the cost of a lost function:

  • Application switching in 10.6.8

sometimes, when I attempt to switch between applications (using command + tab), the only application that appears is the finder. when this happens, I have to manually force quit the 'Dock' process within the activity monitor. why does that happen, and how do I fix it for good?

Not everyone is aware that the Dock hosts many processes in Mac OS X. For example,
in addition to running the Application Switcher, the Dock also runs all of the Dashboard widgets.
Perhaps some widget is causing a problem.
    Try deleting the preferences.
Check the Console logs, they may have some clues that could help this. Permissions repair's effectiveness in general is questionable, but you should verify the filesystem integrity as well to be sure.
    User account might be corrupt.
There are several third party application switchers, Here are a few:

  • Application switching disabled in OS X Lion

I installed OSX Lion and now application switching (command + tab) does not work. How do I enable it?

Well now it's up. But it's buggy. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to full screen apps. When I have terminal set to full screen as an example sometimes (not always) application switching will turn off.

  • Why don't all applications show up in application switcher?

I've got about 8 apps running on my Mac Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard, doing my usual thing, uploading a file with Filezilla, tracking expenses in Quicken Essentials, viewing changes in the weather with WeatherDock, managing fonts in LinoType Font Explorer, surfing in Firefox, making edits in TextEdit and running MagicJack for my home phone. When I tried to use the application switcher (command tab) to see my open apps and check on my file upload, Filezilla and most of my other apps don't show up (only WeatherDocl, Font Explorer and MagicJack). Hovering over the dock, those same apps do not show the white glowing ball under the icon to show they're active, but they ARE open and running. Force Quit sees them all. This is a weird development. Anyone else seen this? I would restart, but I don't want to suspend my uploading file.

If Facebook have support page or forum you would perhaps get answers there.
I don't use Facebook so that's about the best advice I can give.

  • Feature Request - adobe application switcher

In Photoshop and LightRoom,  an application switcher built into the top of the application. Like the  " B. Application bar  or C. Workspace switcher " area in Photoshop , much like the Bridge and Mini-Bridge icons in Photoshop Application Bar that allow switching to those bridge app.
I don't know where that might be in Lightroom, somewhere accessible. This would be so nice.  Actually why not all across the CS Apps too, at least as a preference.

    Hi Todd,
Sorry I replied to you in the Creative Cow forum. Just in case you didn't see my reply there, I'm reposting it here:
Essentially after following the tutorial video very carefully, modifying the shortcuts, making sure there are no traces of other instances of the old shortcut, I save the file then when I reopen AE, I get this window:
Then when I check the folder housing the shortcuts text file I see that my modified shortcut text file simply got renamed "old" at the end of the line:
See second line in window "Shortcuts.txt.old" -> that's the file I modified. It looks like AE simply spawned a new default shortcuts file titled "...Shortcuts.txt"

  • Application switcher - doesn't work right in Lion

Just switched to Lion on my MacBookPro. I used to use a four-finger swipe to get the Application Switcher to pop up -- Sooo useful for me, espeically to get back to the Finder quickly and sooo much faster than going to the Dock. Anyhow, now it seems like Application Switcher is only accessible via the cmd+tab keyboard input, and I can't find it in the Applications folder. Mission Control and Launch Pad don't do the same thing. I need to have a gesture for it, and not have to use the keyboard. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Melanie

You are welcome. Under Lion, the application switcher no longer includes hidden apps. I'm not sure if I like that or not, yet. In any event, when you look at Better Touch Tool be sure to check out it's own special application switcher mode in the tab predefined actions. Also, since you are into using the application switcher, take a look at Switcher Maestro (www.switchermaestro.com). I've just come across it and haven't installed it yet, but you might be interested. It appears to have a number of useful options.
    Good luck with Outlook!

  • Spaces and Application Switcher

My current workflow includes heavy usage of Expose, Spaces, and iOS's Application Switcher. I've installed a number of "helpful" apps in the last couple of days, and the behavior of the application switcher has strangely (and very frustratingly) changed. Now, whenever I command-tab to switch to another application, the application becomes active (evidenced by the application toolbar showing at the top of the screen), but the computer will no longer switch to the Space that has the active window for that application. The same behavior is exhibited when I click on an application icon on the dock - one click will make the application active, but a second click is required to actually switch to the Space with the active application window.
I suspected that my recent installation of Keyboard Maestro was the culprit (since it apparently uses its own "Program Switcher" tool that has similar functionality), but I've uninstalled KM and the same problems still persist. I just need to figure out how to restore the original functionality of the application switcher, where it plays nicely with Spaces.
    Thanks!

Turns out the solution is a simple little checkbox in the Expose & Spaces preference pane (under system preferences). Under the Spaces tab, there is a little checkbox at the very bottom that says "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application." Silly that that little inconspicuous checkbox caused me so much grief over the last month... But there it is.
