Running a Hyper-v vm inside a Windows 8.1 VM

Hello,
I have a Windows 8.1 VM running in a Hyper-v 2012 R2 failover cluster. I need to run a Windows 7 VM inside the Windows 8.1 VM.
Can I do that? If so, how can I do this?
Thanks in advance
dmsousa

Glad that you have seen it with other hypervisors.  It will not work on Hyper-V in this configuration.
There is no way around it.
The exact same situation exists with xen / SenServer / OracleVM - and for an extremely similar architectural reason.
Hyper-V and xen do not emulate the physical layer.  As ESX and VirtualBox do.  Thus the VM inside of the nested Hyper-V Server has no CPU resource to bind to as it has absolutely no access to the physical processor virtualization extensions.
Could this be changed?  Possibly, who knows.  But that does not represent the current situation.

  • Ubuntu running under Hyper-V with high load

I'm running a VM for Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS under Hyper-V and with no web server or any other public server installed, the system load is 1.0
The VM is using a 75GB fixed VHD on its own partition (the hard drive is using raid 0).
Is this normal for running a linux OS under Hyper-V?
Here's what top shows (i restarted the vm for fresh numbers, but it still shows a load of 1.00 even after its been running for a day):
    top - 16:58:17 up 23 min,  1 user,  load average: 1.00, 0.58, 0.24
    Tasks: 235 total,   1 running, 234 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombie
    Cpu(s):  0.0%us,  0.0%sy,  0.0%ni, 98.8%id,  1.0%wa,  0.0%hi,  0.2%si,  0.0%st
    Mem:   4040336k total,   870384k used,  3169952k free,    13232k buffers
    Swap:  7812092k total,        0k used,  7812092k free,   225396k cached
The host OS is running Windows 2012 R2 and it too isint running anything else that would put a lot of load on the server.

    Hi Sir,
The following daemons must be installed manually for Ubuntu distributions:
VSS Snapshot daemon – This daemon is required to create live Linux virtual machine backups.
KVP daemon – This daemon allows setting and querying intrinsic and extrinsic key value pairs.
To install both daemons, please use the following command:
    Copy
    # sudo apt-get update
    # sudo apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init
    # uname –r
    <kernel release>
    # sudo apt-get install linux-tool-<kernel release>
    # sudo apt-get install linux-cloud-tools-<kernel release>

  • Hyper-V as User on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro

I believe I'm having permission issues when attempting to use Hyper-V on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro.  Hyper-V seems to install cleanly, and from an admin account I can use the Hyper-V Manager without issue and connect to a running VM.  However
if I attempt to use the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection application from the same account, it reports "You do now have the required permission to complete this task..." And attempts to run either the Manager or the Virtual Machine Connection result
in the same on a standard user account.
Standard wisdom seems to be to add the user account to the "Hyper-V Administrators" group but when I've looked in the Computer Management utility and the group "Hyper-V Administrators" does not exist. I've tried manually adding full
permissions to the WMI interfaces for CIMV2, StandardCimv2 and Virtualization namespaces through the WMI Control Properties interface. I've also added the user to the "Administrator" role for Hyper-V services in AzMan as a long shot.  Beyond
this, I'm not sure where to go next.
The end goal is to be able to run the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection Utility from a non-administrative user. Any advice is appreciated.
    -Matthias

Your question might be more general to Hyper-V and not specifically embedded. WE8.1 is Windows 8.1 with lockdown features so there is nothing special. Account level (Administrator vs. non-administrator) does effect what permissions are granted to access
    certain OS features.
Maybe the Hyper-V forum can address the account level -

  • 2008 R2 server running off Hyper V is reverting changes made by users to directories/ files that are moved.

We have a Windows 2008 R2 file server ( running off hyper V)
It has intronis and backup exec installed for backups.
Users are creating folders on the server and moving files, and sometimes ( not every time but about 20% of the time) the changes they made/ folders they setup will be gone and the files are back in the original directory they were in the day before.
There are some NTFS errors ( Event ID 55) that say to run a chkdsk,
which we have done ( chkdsk /r )
But we are still having the problem.
Should we just replace the drive? There is not much on google about this type of problem anyone run into anything like this before?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi,
Do you restore the drive from backups? Do all the folders and files have the same issue in the drive or only some specific folders and files? Does the issue occur instantly?
You could refer to the article below to troubleshoot the event ID 55 error.

I have Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V installed and Ubuntu 12.04 running on a VM.

From what I can gather VSS will be able to run without the need to shutdown the Ubuntu VM but the backups are not running when Windows Server Backups run?
How can I verify IF any backups of the VM have run successfully at all?
I am new to Hyper-V - but from what I can see , it seems that no VM backups are running . The normal Windows Server backups are running nightly. I would like them to run together without having to restart/ take offline/reboot the VM.
This is a production server and I need to avoid rebooting as much as possible-

  • Hyper-V replica for a Windows 8 VM possible?

    Hi,
I plan to maybe run 2 VMs on Hyper-V. Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and Windows 8.1 Pro. I plan to use a second server with hyper-V free on it. We'll make replicas on it.
I know I can use Hyper-V Replica to make a replica of the Windows Server VM every 5 minutes on the second server. Can we do the same for the Windows 8.1 Pro VM?
Also Can we use the Hyper-V server included with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials to replicate on a Hyper-V free server? Are they compatible? Or should we use 2 Hyper-v free servers so they are more compatible?

    Hi ,
" Can we do the same for the Windows 8.1 Pro VM? "
I think you can replica the client VM to another hyper-v host on technical level .
But it may involve  a licensing issue , for this configuration please contact to MS activation center for further assistance :

  • Loading Hyper-v devices drivers for Windows XP Task Sequence

I'm trying to create a Windows XP reference image using SCCM 2007 R3 with MDT 2010.   XP installs and boots up but video, mouse, etc do not load.   NIC is working so no network issues.   When XP comes up I can't use the mouse
(a huge pain).  From hyper-v client I can ""Insert Integration Services Setup Disk" but first, I have to close all the pop-up windows for "unknown devices".   Since I don't have a mouse, it is difficult close those windows.
Can someone please advise how to load the hyper-v devices  I have tried to make a package of the "vmghost.iso" then run "setup.exe /quiet /norestart" but this task fails in the task sequence.

  • Create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell searching on hostname

    Dear,
I’m a starter with PowerShell scripting an I’m looking for a script to create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell. The idea behind the script is that when I run the script its first searching for the hostname. I’m migrating 24 locations and each
location have a different hostname like xxx-SRV001. The script needs to use the first 3 signs from the hostname in this case “xxx” and create 2 VM's with below info:
    Virtual Machine 1 2048MB
    Virtual Machine 2 4096MB
    Location D:\VM\
I can create VM's with Powershell into Hyper-V so only a script to first searching for the first 3 characters of the hostname is enough.
    Example:
It's the intention that when the script runs it's looking for the hostname. As example we have hostname 000-SRV001
If the script see the first 3 characters of the hostname, in this case 000 he need to create 2 VMs with name xxx-SRV002 and xxx-SRV004
I think it must be something with
    $hostname = "Get-WmiObject -computername $Machine Win32_Computersystem"
But then when i'm asking for $hostname he must give me back the hostname and if the hostname is 1 of the 24 locations then he need to create 2 vm's in Hyper-V with above info.
Can you help me or do you have a script for this?

    Juste use :
    $vram = 1GB*$vRam
    You not need the "

  • How can I run a labview executable file inside a VI

How can i add and run a labview executable file inside the vi and grab the output of the executable file to be used in the vi?

    Hi cmdrb,
to run an executable you use SystemExec function.
To get the output of your (LabVIEW-made) executable you need to program some data transfer means: you may use network functions or file functions. In both cases your "LabVIEW executable" needs to provide that options…

This should get your itunes store connection working.
    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

After running bootcamp, DVD drive is detected by Windows 8. But after installing drivers, no longer can detect. Device Manager shows that DVD drive is unplugged! Drivers in Bootcamp “removed” the DVD drive. I think there is an issue because I reinstalled Windows 8. If I don't install driver, then I have reduced functionality (no Apple keyboard, no sound etc), but once I install driver, I lose my DVD drive.

Hi, guys, I have had the exact same problem since the summer of 2010. Here's what I was able to find out.
Deleting upper/lower filters, running all those Fix Ya programs and other Microsoft crap is useless. This problem is most certainly has nothing to do with registry of any software on your computer. I took my HP 9620us to a couple of repair places and, they tried a lot of things and it appears that the root of this problem is a faulty motherboard connection. Of course, it costs about 400 bucks to fix it so I'm not sure I want to pay this kind of money.
Anyway, if somebody was able to fix it PLEASE post here to let us know. Again I am 99 per cent sure it's some piece of hardware in the motherboard.
