Running a little unusually...

My MacBook Pro...which is only 3 weeks old...is running a little strangely today. It's taking a few seconds longer to do things and when starting up the menu bar is slow in loading also.
I just wondered if I'd maybe picked up a bug already. And also wanted to ask you guys if there is an utilities on my MBP for maintaining the machine...i.e. Disk Defragment or Disc Clean up as with Windows.
Would be interested to hear any thoughts.
Many thanks..RICKY

Hey...
Thanks for that. However, me be the dumb *** that I am..I have downloaded 'MainMenu' but I'm not really aure how to work out. Their website doesn't really give you instruction either..
Just wondered (if it's not too much trouble) if you could give me a few pointers on how to use the app.
Thanks again..

  • Should I upgrade?  I have the Mac OS X MacBook Pro version 10.6.8, was wondering would it be beneficial to upgrade my laptop at this point, its running a little slow?  Thanks.

    Hi Everyone
I have the MacBook Pro OS X version 10.6.8 and I was wondering would it be a good idea for me to upgrade at this point?  My computer is running a little slow and I know it's not the internet connection.  Any advice?
    Best and thanks in advance,
    Shay912

    Shay912,
which model MacBook Pro do you have, and how much RAM does it have?
If its slowness is due to installed third-party software, then upgrading to Mavericks won’t resolve that problem. You could try downloading and installing EtreCheck, and including in your reply the output from a run of EtreCheck, to see if possible sources of slowness can be identified.

  • My mac is getting very slow, is there a way i can get it to run a little quicker?

my mac is running really slow, is there any way i can get it to run a little quicker,

You want to check out the drive to be sure it isn't failing.
Get free demo of SMART Utility to test
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
Probably has little to do with login items (which would usually only affect time to boot and/or login.) Don't waste your time with Permissions repair, either. Has nothing to do with it.
I have no idea which iMac you have or how old it is.
How much free space on the drive? Do CMD-I on the HD folder.
If the drive checks out, try running Applejack.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10334620-263.html?tag=mfiredir
Type in "applejack AUTO" at the prompt and let it run through the entire program. First boot after will be slower than usual, as it rebuild caches. May need several restarts to see benefits.

  • Can A 1.25 Ghz MDD be overclocked to run a little faster, but still stable?

    Just wondering.
Can't afford a new/newer Mac right now and was wondering if my G4 can be overclocked to run a little faster.
I am looking to eek out a little more performance out of my now 8 year old PowerMac tower.
If it can, how difficult is the procedure to do so.
Will overclocking cause any additional heat issues?
Are there any procedures on the web for doing this?

I agree with Allan. Overclocking is fun for a hobbyist, but you are putting your "work" Machine at risk. Sometimes you kill something.
    Creating a Boot drive:
IDE/ATA drives accessed at the same time on shared cables "lock each other out" when they read or write. There is no possibility of overlapping operation. One Big speedup used in the Mac Pro (which can have four independent SATA drives) is to isolate System, Library, Applications, and the hidden UNIX files on a Boot Drive, and move all the Users folders off to another drive.
There are two sets of cables in the Mirrored drive doors G4. The "standing up" drives at the rear are sharing an ATA/100 Bus, and the "lying down" drives toward the front are using an ATA/Bus. If you created a Boot drive and put it in the slightly slower Bus, it would make your work go faster.

  • [Solved] No grub installed. Now laptop running a little too hot.

I had fedora and crunchbang already running on my laptop so I had't installed grub. Now my laptop is running little hot even after installing Laptop Mode Tools
and there is no grub in /etc or /etc/default where I can change any values. If I install now and update after changes, will it affect my existing crunchbang grub?

derhamster At first I'd thought MatLab is the culprit. But then even with only leafpad running, the laptop was too hot.

  • Running A Little Hot- How To Test The Fans?

I left my Macbook on standby (on but closed) for a few days (not recommended, I know) and when I came back to it, it was rather unduly hot for a computer that hadn't actually been running. I opened it; it wouldn't wake up. I force-shut down by holding the power button, turned it back on, and it started up REALLY sluggishly. Now, it runs, but much quieter than it used to.
I appreciate the silence but a Macbook that died due to overheating is no good to anyone. So before I bring it into the genius bar for dead fans, I wanted to ask if there was any way to force the fans to turn on if they work to make sure they don't. (Or any other method of eliminating "paranoia" as a viable explanation for the silence.)

Perhaps the room was hot. Perhaps my (slightly) defective battery is responsible. Who knows? I could feel that it was hotter than it ought to be given the ambient room temperature. And it appears to have no fans, which is why I want to test them.

  • My Macbook Pro has been running a little slow lately.

Any suggestions on how to speed it back up? I have been deleting unnecessary apps, but I don't know what else to do! Thanks in advance! I have had it for about 2 years now and I am about to be heading to college so I can't have it run slow now!

Slowdowns can be software or hardware related.  The steps in the link below will help determine which it is.  The simplest steps are listed first.  Have you downloaded any new software or made an OS update lately?  If so that may help point to the issue.

  • Toshiba x205 s9800 running but little problem

i got a toshiba x205 s9800 it has been running fine for years now it was upgraded to windows 7 and started to give a few problems wich were fixed and then it was fine for years but now it is making a wierd noise on the right side when i tap on the laptop it stops is there any idea what this is i do not want this laptop to die out its an awesome laptop and it dont deserve the trash can. i personally do not like the newer toshiba laptop because there is very few usb ports on them and there slower and preloaded with a bunch of junk that slows it down,
and also can this laptop handle a dual boot i had ubuntu 9.04 on it before and im thinking on installing there new beta 12 along the side of windows.

Check the flow of your program.
It may be the case when you press enter( when ztest is empty) it may be going through the selection statements again and as there will be no records, it will display empty.
AYou can limit this by checking for initial condition of ztest.
    if ztest[] is initial.
    select * from etc....
    endif.
one more thing is you need to modify the ztest after you record input.
    so your code will be...
    pai...
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    loop at ztest.
    field ztest-check module pick-sel.
    endloop.
    in module pick-sel.
    MODULE pick_sel INPUT.
      IF ztest-check = 'X'.
        MODIFY gt_final INDEX tab_cntl-current_line .
    ENDIF.
    ENDMODULE.
Hope this will solve your problem.

  • G5 running a little slow

I noticed my g5 slowing down today, anyone know what is sufficient for running a g5 with logic pro 7.
How much free memory should be available and how much free disc space on my hard drive.I use an external drive when i record audio and my g5 comes with a 250 gb drive and i only have 50gb's left of space

Ok here's what I have learned.
Once you have a setup that works..... don't change it!! Don't update anything..... and if you have to update, read what are the changes that are going to be applied to the new update and how will it affect your current version of LP. Even if you have to email the manufactures to ask them painstakingly one by one if this update will affect A, B or C on your setup and if this and so and so is supported.... then you do it.
Why update if everything works, get to a point where you understand what each update is going to do. Take back the control of how fast manufactures are forcing you to buy and struggle with their development.
So if everything worked b 4.... trace which software update changed it, then go back to that setup. I say this cause I am assuming it's an update with battery 3 that changed something in your overall speed.
I remember when I still had my G5. I was on LP7 on a G5 and I had a ridiculous amount of freedom and power on it and the moment I moved to LP8.... it was like they wrote LP8 specifically to force me to get an intel mac...... which i then did. Since then I try stick to what works for as long as I possibly can, cause these updates are just not always necessary and besides they almost never have anything to do with the way things sound at the end of the day.
My advice, be it flawed in which ever way, try get back to what you had.... re-installing from the top I guess?
I know you can also have an entire secondary boot up drive to test stuff on before you actually use it, to check stability and performance etc. but that someone else will have to explain as I seem to have forgotten the finer detail.
Hope you get stuff fast again as I am sure it's very irritating to you.

  • My macbook pro is running a little bit slow. It's just 1 year old. What should i do?

It's taking time to load certain programs and to start-up compared to how it was before.

Hm...are you downloading anything? <- sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but my computer slows down a lot when I'm downloading something (even though it would not explain the start-up situation).
It is natural that a computer slows down after a certain amount of usage time but if it's a significant amount of time that it has slowed down, I really do suggest having the Genius Bar take a look.

  • I recieved anipod touch from my brother and it was running a little slow, so i restored it to factory settings but all it did was erase everything and not restore it.

When it's plugged in to itunes it keeps saying it needs to be restored, so i restore it but the same thing happens. It just never restores. Any hints/advice

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.

  • Os x firewall and little snitch firewall running at same time , can they collide or lead to system crash ?

os x firewall is very good , but it does not manage outgoing connections !
if running the little snitch and the built in firewall at the same time , can i ensure security without system crash (os x yosemite ) ????
    thanks

I normally advise against Little Snitch: it delves very deep in the OS core so it does not add to security and can more easily lead to security issues than without it.
You must be a power user with special interests to use such a software.

  • OS9 running in OSX - a little jerky

My eMac's are duel boot OS9 OSX. The OS9 video's and some OS9 programs run a little jerky when I launch them from the OSX side. Is there a way to smooth that out. When you click the mouse to answer a question in our english software, sometimes you have to do it twice as if the computer is not listening.

Sometimes it helps to "optimize" the Mac OS 9 System Folder for use as Classic. If you also restart from that Mac OS 9 System Folder directly, you can make another copy of the System Folder only for use as Classic under Mac OS X.
You can even put that Classic System Folder on a disk image. This keeps it separated from the System Folder that is used for startup. Just create a disk image that is slightly larger than the System Folder and copy the System Folder to it. While the disk image is mounted, go to the System Preferences Classic pane and select the System Folder on the disk image. Once it is selected, Classic even mounts the disk image automatically, if it is not mounted.
Optimizing the System Folder involves disabling extensions for functions that are handled by Mac OS X. There are several articles about the topic if you do a Google search on "optimize classic mac". Here is one that is very useful.

  • Since updating to FF 5.0, I can no longer access my MAMP server (Mac/Apache/MySQL/PHP) Wordpress development site on my Localhost computer (MacBook Pro, OSX 10.6.4). Why not? It's running EXTREMELY SLOWLY when I try to access the pages on my site.

PROBLEM WITH LOCALHOST SITE LOADING VERY SLOWLY (IF AT ALL) AFTER I UPGRADED FIREFOX TO 5.0 FROM 3.6
I have been successfully running MAMP, a personal Apache server with MySQL, on my MacBook Pro using OSX 10.6.4. This is so I can create a Wordpress blog locally to later upload to my remote website.
Yesterday, I updated my Firefox browser from 3.6 to 5.0 (and added the following extensions: Better Privacy 1.51, Bloody Vikings! 0.5.3, Copy as HTML Link 2.0, Firebug 1.7.3, Firepicker 1.3.4, NoScript 2.1.1.2, and Ultimate Free Stock Photo Search Add-on 1.0.1, TypeGauge 0.5, and Zotero 2.1.8)
Now, I'm having trouble: At first, MySQL database server in MAMP wouldn't turn on at all. I restarted both Firefox and MAMP a few times. Finally, MySQL turned on and MAMP started to load into the browser. But it got only as far as the top bar on the MyPHP page, and would not load the rest of the page. Finally, pages do load, but I'm getting a "Waiting for localhost…" message looping at the lower left screen for a VERY LONG TIME (30-60 sec?) before my localhost web page appears (sometimes it says "Read localhost…").
But even when the localhost pages appears, it continues to run VERY SLOWLY when the browser tries to load the pages (although it runs a little less slowly when I use only the backend Wordpress administration pages). In short, it seems that something is stopping Firefox from accessing the MySQL database properly so that my site can show up as quickly as it did before.
Since this mess only happened after I upgraded to Firefox 5.0 and added the plugins, and nothing else has changed on my computer, it seems the Firefox 5.0 app and/or an extension is the culprit.
Can you advise me ASAP about what to do? If not, I'll have to downgrade to 4.0 or something. I've got deadlines to meet.
    Thank you.

  • My Macbook Pro is running very slowly

    Problem description:
My Macbook Pro (2009) slowed significantly when I installed Yosemite.
I made some changes to settings of various apps and this helped but the system seems to be running increasingly slowly.
I have installed the latest version of Yosemite; I am now on 10.10.2. And the system has slowed a little more.
I have trashed a couple of Apps to make more room. Also a movie. System seems to be running a little faster now (or should I say less slow).
I suspect syncing between iPad and laptop may be slowing the laptop.
The Apple chappies at the shop said my battery needs servicing or replacing (probably the latter).
In particular the following apps are slow:
    * Chrome (altho slowness may sometimes be caused by slow Internet connection I guess.
    * iPhoto
    * MS Word is almost unusable because it is so slow. Possibly the version I have is incompatible with Mavericks?
I se that the EtreCheck report talks about Tuxera being out of date. I can’t find where it is on my system in order to uninstall it.
All help and advice gratefully received.

    A couple of suggestions:
Download EasyFind and use it to locate specific files. Often it will be successful when Spotlight fails:
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/easyfind/id411673888?mt=12
Delete Google Chrome and its various parts.  It is a resource hog and has a history of compatibility issues with OSX.
Install additional RAM.  Your MBP will support up to 8 GB>  The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.
