Running a Mac OS 9  (Classic)  on Tiger OS

Hi Guys
i have a software disk that when i insert it tells me that i need to run on Mac OS 9 (Classic). but i am running Mac OS 10.4.6 on my Power Book G4.
This is the final Error i keep getting:
You do not have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. Install Mac OS 9.1 or later (Classic Support).
For more information about installing this support, click the Help button.
i have hit the help button and did not come up with any helpful things,
does anyone know how i can install the OS 9 (Classic) or where i can get it from?
Thanks

Hi macingaround,
you can install Classic from the install disks that shipped with your computer. Depending on the original system version the procedure might be slightly different. Click on "Support" on top of this page and then enter "reinstall classic" into the search-field. From the results select the version that fits your original install disks for detailed instructions.

  • HT2431 How can I best run old CDs written for Mac OS 9 (Classic)on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7 with VMware Fusion

I have some old CDs of medical drawings and other references that were written for Mac OS 9 (Classic). These are still excellent resources but I now  have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7. I also am running VMware Fusion.  How best can I run these programs?

MacBook Pros & OS X Lion don't support classic operation.
Suggest you buy an older Mac that will run OS 9 or run in classic mode while booted into OS X Tiger or below.

    Welcome To Discussions John-macOwner!
    Here is some additional info.
Review this page for functionality and capabilities of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some additional online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD on them.
    Explanation is in these links.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.

  • A "Script" is slowing down my computer. I keep stopping it, but it keeps coming back. I cannot update my browser, because I am running a MAC 10.4.11 (tiger) operating system.

I keep getting a message that a "script" is running on my computer. I am given the option of discontinuing it--which I do. It works briefly, then the "script" comes back, I get the message again, choose to discontinue it, etc. I cannot upgrade my browser, because I have the MAC OS 10.4.11 (tiger). I don't know what to do. Do you have any advice? Thanks, and have a wonderful day. Jane

It's from Apple (Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD). I have never gone to an outside source for repair or software (outside of Microsoft Office which is no longer on my computer since I have had these issues).  This is the first time I have required help since my Apple Care ran out.

  • Lost MAC OS X 10.4 Tiger installer..Pls help

I completely clean my hard drive this afternoon, then Re install Mac OS X. I did not notice that I'm installing MAC OS X Panther. My problem is i don't know where is Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger installer since it was a long time. How can i upgrade my 10.3 again to 10.4 without it?

BDAqua or Rysz (both of you seem extremely knowledgeable):
This is not a reply to a problem, but a new problem - hope one of you can help. I have an iBook, running 10.4.11. I can afford to upgrade to a Pentium processor MacBook, but choose not to, because of thousands of dollars worth of software I have that work only on OS 9, and I'm sure you both know that 10.4, on the old Motorola processor, will run both X and 9-Classic.
So much for background. The problem is that I had a previous iBook and woke up one night to the sound of the hard drive making a grinding sound. Of course I immediately shut it off. I then shipped it to my son, who is also a Mac devotee. He not only picked me up another iBook at a reasonable price, but took the HD out of my old iBook, put it in an external USB hard drive case, and it worked fine, so he sent me both. The iBook worked great, both in X and 9-Classic, so I began transferring everything over from my old hard drive to the new iBook. After I had finished, I tried to start 9 Classic - the 9 screen would pull up and the progress bar would begin to move, but freeze after it had filled in roughly 1/16 of an inch. I could leave it on all night, but it still wouldn't load any further. I noticed I had SoftWare Restore in the Application Support folder of my OS 9 System Folder, and thought restoring my 9 software might make a difference, but discovered 9 has to start up before the restoration app can be used, so I'm back at square one.
I'm usually very knowledgeable re Macs (still have an old LC, as well as 2 Bondi iMacs), but this has me stumped. I'm betting I pulled something over from my old hard drive that I shouldn't have, and it's creating a conflict, but I can't imagine what it could have been. I've tried starting up with extensions off, but that doesn't work either. I can't use any of my OS 9 software, and could sure use some recommendations.

  • Printer Driver for HP Photosmart 7520 for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.3 and 10.5

I just purchased a new HP Photosmart 7520 printer.  One of my Macs at home is an iMac G5 that is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.  It connects to the HP printer via Wi-Fi.  HP does not provide drivers for Mac OS 10.4 for the Photosmart 7520 printer.  I tried all sorts of old HP drivers and finally found one that worked, so I figured I would post here to help out anyone else who is trying to solve the same problem.  The driver download you need is the OS 10.4 driver for the Photosmart C7250 All-In-One printer.  Here is the link to the download page:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-55650-2 &cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=219&product=3382185&sw_lang=
After downloading and installing the drivers, I ran the HP Printer Setup Utility.  It was not able to detect my printer.  I had to go to System Preferences on my Mac and add the printer manually in the Print & Fax control panel.  The Print & Fax control panel was not able to auto-select the correct driver to use, so I selected "HP" from the "Print Using" drop-down list, and then selected "HP Photosmart D7400 Series" from the "Model" list.  That worked for me.  Good luck!
According to the driver download page, this driver will work for Mac OS X v10.3.9, v10.4 and v10.5

Thank you very much, I just bought this printer without paying attention to the compatibility of my Imac. Thanks to you, I just install it without too much difficulty. Thank you again.
Merci beaucoup, je viens d'acheter cette imprimante sans faire attention à la compatibilité de mon Imac. Grace à vous, je viens de l'installer sans trop de difficulté. Encore merci.

  • My Macbook Pro with 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo (Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger) can convert to Lion?

my Macbook Pro with 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo (Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger) can convert to Lion?
    Toyoo

These are some of the most common Questions (Q) and Answers (A) about Lion:
Q: What are the system requirements of the Lion upgrade?
A: Core2Duo, Core i3, i5, i7, and Xeon Intel CPUs with 2 GB of RAM in a Macintosh computer with 2 GB of RAM, and 4 GB (7 GB after installed) for downloading from the Mac App Store (Available in 10.6.6 and later). Unofficially, past upgrades have arbitrarily also required an additional 15% of the hard drive to be free for data.
Q: What applications are compatible with Lion?
A: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table provides a nice third party editable listing for people to include the compatible applications. Many of these compatibility entries came from before Lion's release. Please verify they are correct now that it has been released, and help edit it for more accurate data. Be sure to include any update version of Lion post release that you have found is or is not compatible with it, for the help of others who may be upgrading to Lion the first time. Additionally, as it was released, there is no Rosetta. This means any application that is stated to be PowerPC in the System Profiler, will not work with Lion, and needs a comparable application or upgrade to be compatible. The System Profiler is in Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info. Intel and Universal applications are on the whole supported, though may still need some tweaking before every feature is compatible.
Q: Are there any pitfalls to watch out for?
A: With all upgrades, backing up your data at least twice has been a given. Hardware can fail independently of downloads and upgrades, though may happen simultaneously. Software may be found to be incompatible that has not been tested with the new upgrade, or combination of other software that might be installed with the upgrade. It is also strongly recommended once your backup is complete, to shut down your computer, remove all but Apple wired keyboard and mouse (notebooks remove all input devices). Then once done, reboot, and go directly to the upgrade distribution system available. Third party system tools, modification, and "maintenance" applications should be verified as compatible, or removed until known to be compatible. Check with developers how to remove if it is essential to use Lion before those applications become compatible. Most "maintenance" tools that deal with system cache, prebinding, are not really maintenance tools. Ask on forum when are the appropriate times to use them before assuming they should be used for upgrades or otherwise.
    Q: How can I get from 10.4 or 10.5 to 10.6.6?
A: Purchase a 10.6 retail installer from an Apple retail or third party reseller. It has a picture of a Snow Leopard on the DVD, and does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM. Install it, and then install the 10.6.6 combo update from:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
Q: Is it true that I can only get it from the Mac App Store?
A: Presently this truth is based on current documentation as of the writing of this article. It may change, but we can't speculate as to its change. It has a better chance of changing if users request something different at:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Q: What limitations might one encounter if it doesn't change?
A: First off the 7 GB space limitation on the hard disc after it is installed. Secondly, the size of the download file requires significant time, unless you have a high speed broadband connection. Times expected are below -
    4 GB at:
    5Mbps is 2 hours.
at 1 Mbps is 10 hours.
at 384 kbps is 27 hours.
at 56k kbps is 184 hours (nearly 8 days).
If you include the 10.6.6 combo update of 1.06 GB
add 29 minutes for 5 Mbps
    145 minutes (2 and 25 minutes) for 1 Mbps
    6 and a half hours for 384kbps
A 24 hour day and 15 hours (for a total of a minimum of 39 hours) for 56kbps
Remember the retail 10.6 currently does not include the App Store, and those upgrading from 10.5.8 or earlier will need to both buy the retail 10.6, and download the combo 10.6.6 update, not to mention ensure they have the correct processor and 2 GB of RAM. Finally once it is available, you'll have find out how long approximately it takes to install after the download is complete.
These times do not include installation time, which on a MacBook Pro 3,1 15" installing on a Firewire 800 Newertech Voyager with WD10ACS-322J80 drive, 10.6.7, took 1 hour and a half to complete the installation from double clicking the install command to the registration screen. These times may vary by connection speeds from a non-dedicated connection, or background application usage of the internet. Any applications running when the installation process begins might interfere with the installation itself, and they should be quit first.
The installer just before it starts has in its package contents an InstallESD.dmg file a DVD burnable image to install on additional computers in the home without downloading over again. So if you desire to reinstall without an extra internet download, extract that file, by selecting the installer in the dock, and control-clicking it, and revealing it in the Finder. Next Control-mouse click it, and select show package contents. Inside that folder is a Shared Support folder. That's where you find the DMG.
Q: If I purchased a Mac recently, can I get it cheaper?
A: Yes, visit http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ for details.
Q: When will Lion become available?
    A: It became available July 20, 2011.
Q: Which Macs can run Lion?
A: Look at Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info, and see if you meet the Machine ID and RAM requires under the hardware. 2 GB is required for all These Machine IDs will run Lion:
    Mac Mini 2,1 and later
    MacBook 2,1 and later.
    iMac 5,1 and later.
    All MacBook Air.
    MacBook Pro 2,1 and later
    All MacPros.
The Macs with the Machine IDs below will not run Lion (x can be any number):
Mac Mini 1,x or PowerMac x,x
    MacBook 1,x
    MacBook Pro 1,x
    iMac 4,x, 3,x, 2,x, 1,x

  • Is it possible to run two Mac operating systems at one time?

I am running snow leopard on my MacBook but have an older version of Photoshop that can only be run on tiger. Tiger is already installed on an external hard drive so I could just boot up into that bit would like to save some time. Is there software that allows simultaneous running of  mac OS like parallels desktop does for windows on Mac?

It would seem reasonable that you might be able to do it.. use Disk Utility to create a new partition for the other MacOS and install it to that partition. You will treat each partition as a separate disk, and select the boot disk thru System Preferences. But this approach treats them as separate OS installations requiring separate boots and cannot be run simultaneously.
I opened Parallels 6 on my machine and noticed Parallels will allow you to create a Virtual Machine with another OS and not just Windows.  I think you'll have to install MacOS from scratch though using the install MacOS DVD. I  haven't tried this approach but it seems like it might be succesful. Not sure what happens when Parallels "translates" between MacOSs though.
I don't think you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to install a MacOS to a Parallels Virtual Machine though.

  • INstallation of Mono project on MAC OS X v10.4 Tiger

    HI Team,
I'm new into the world of MAC OS. But have interest for MAC other than windows. We have a requirement to run C#.net 2.0 application in MAC OS X 10.4 Tiger. For this we have adopted Mono project. After browsing thru the website www.mono-project.com/downloads we found the mono installable package of extension ".dmg". Do we need to download this and install the same.
What generally will be the installation procedure of s/w on Mac and how these can be uninstalled?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    B. Ravi Kiran.

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
On Mac OS X, installation are quiet simple, the .dmg file you can download on that website is the standard disk image on Mac OS X, you open it and it mount a virtual disk on the desktop. Sometimes you will have to agree to a license before the disk actually mounts (it's not the case here).
In the virtual disk you may have one of those two possibilities :
    - You can have a .app file or a folder containing the app, in that case (and it's generally written in the window) you just have to drag the folder/app on your hard disk to install it.
    - Or you can have a .pkg/.mpkg file, it's an installer package, you just double-click on it to launch the Installer app, you follow the instructions agreeing the licenses, entering your password to install the app and then the install will begin. For the mono project you have that solution. here it will just install the framework Mono.framework into the folder /Library/Frameworks.
After installing you'll should be able to use any Mono compatible applications, well hopefully, but I can't guaranty you anything. I would rather saying that trying to make a C#.NET app to work on a Macintosh is counter-nature if you don't use an actual Windows (using BootCamp or virtualization apps like Parallel or VMWare), especially because Mono didn't port the whole .Net framework (I think it misses WinForms for instance).
However, if you actually need to make that app work on Mac OS X \sight than it'll be the only solution.

  • Mac executable file won't run on Mac

I am trying to get a mac executable file to run on a mac. It has been authored in Captivate 5.0 PC version.
I have tried to run it on a Mac book, about 5 years old and nothing opens at all and same on an old G4. I have had no other opportunity to test it on another mac.
The the html/flash version plays ok in safari, but not .app or PDF. All files designed to run on PC run ok.
I am a complete novice on mac's, but assume that opening the .app file like an .exe file on PC will launch the program.
The package I have made is about 96 mb as a .app file and is about 80 odd slides long and also contains an number of flv files.
I have been looking very hard to see if anyone else is has experienced the same or similar problem and have found nothing useful.
I would assume it has nothing to do with flash player as everything that the program needs should be self contained in the executable.
    Thanks

The G4 is running OS 10.2.3.
I created a test Mac projector in Director then tested it on the same Mac and the .classic and .osx files ran ok.
Do you think it is an issue with Captivate .app files not being compatible with early version of OS?, or something more fundamental with the .app files and the OS.
I guess there is no realistic way to convert the Captivate .app file directory to a .osx file?, as there may well be occasions when the package will be used on older Mac OS systems.
I will try and get it tested on a  later OS System.

  • I have a Mac OS X 1q.4 Tiger that I would like to upgrade to Firefox 4 is there any way to do this?

When I tried to upload my Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger system to use Firefox 4, I was told it couldn't be done. Is there any way this can be done? How dangerous is it for me to continue using Firefox 3 until I figure out what to do?

Version 3.5.19 is the latest in the 3.5 line. Version 3.6.17 is the latest in the 3.6 line. I think both of those are currently up-to-date, but that 3.5 won't be getting new updates.
To get the latest version 3.6, go to this page: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
Regarding Firefox 4 on MacOS X 10.4, no, I don't think there's any easy way to make it run on your OS.
