Running a worklfow in Keynote

Does anyone kno how to run an automator workflow, or app from within keynote?
I am trying to make it possible for users of my presentation to be able to enter their contact details during the kiosk presentation. As there is no way for keynote to accept user input i was planning on writing an automator workflow or applescript to ask the user for this info. However I don't know a way of running that workflow from the presentation. I was hoping that there was a way of making a hyperlink open it.
Any ideas would be most useful - thanks.

Have you given any thought to writing a Dashboard widget? You could have a "contact information" widget that wouldn't have to bother Keynote at all. I've seen a couple companies with that set up at Macworld.
I'm not sure it can be done IN Keynote as scripting within apps like that usually lead to security risks (which is why Office has had so many in the past).

I have MacBook with OS 10.5.8
Is there any way for me to install and run Keynote on this machine? Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Keynote '09 is compatible with your computer, but you won't get the latest Keynote version running that version. As you have an Early 2008 MacBook, first I recommend you to update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard to get newer versions of all applications but without losing any applications > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Make a backup before upgrading.
The DVD contains Mac OS X 10.6.3, so after upgrading, open  > Software Update to update to 10.6.8. Then, you will get access to the App Store.
However, the Keynote version available in the App Store is only compatible with OS X 10.7.5 or newer, so now you have two options:
    1. Upgrade to OS X Lion and purchase Keynote from the App Store.
    2. Keep Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, and buy Keynote on a DVD in eBay or Amazon. Note that you won't be running the most recent Keynote version, but it doesn't mind (the latest version only adds iCloud support)

  • Can you run a presentation on a screen using keynote

Does anyone know how to run a presentation using keynote a large projector? If so what do I need to accomplish this for a large meeting?

You need the proper cable to connect to the projection. The digital AV (HDMI) allows charging the iPad and supports mirroring the iPad's screen. There is also the VGA cable that also supports mirroring. There are also component and pmposit but those do not support mirroring and have poorer resolution.

  • Scheduled shutdown no longer works in Keynote 4.0 iLife 08

Those of us using Keynote, a large LED monitor and a Mac Mini as a Digital signage system have found that the new Keynote 4.0 in iLife 08 will not allow a scheduled shutdown. This worked well under the old version.
We had been on iLife 06 and 10.4.9. We found that Keynote crashes every few days when you try and run a show 24/7 so we had used the energy saver settings to have it shut down at 1AM and restart at 2AM. This was working well, the only trick was to always name the current slide show the same thing and have Keynote auto launch at startup and run the slideshow.
Last week we reimaged a Mini with 10.4.10 and iLife 08 and put in place of the 10.4.9 ilife 06 mini, the first time it was suppose to shutdown it hung, there was an error on the screen that said "Keynote had canceled shutdown".
    Testing proved the following:
Schedule shutdown does not work at all when a Keynote presentation is running. You get this error.
"The application Keynote canceled shutdown. To try again quit Keynote and choose shut down from the Apple menu"
It will auto shutdown and startup IF a Keynote slide show is NOT running.
It will do a scheduled shutdown if just the Keynote App is running.
If the Keynote app is running a normal shutdown command will work.
Does anyone know a work around or a fix?

The thread "Keynote Cancelled Shutdown: how do I troubleshoot?" has recently posted a possible solution but is there an explanation or a fix planned?

  • Is there a way to toggle to a web browser while in Keynote presenter view?

I teach at a number of research classes at a University and I prefer to use Keynote as a teaching tool. My teaching requires that I access websites regularly throughout the the class.
Here is what I'm currently doing:
    1. Before the class starts, I open each website we'll be using during the class as window and assign the window to it's own desktop. So if I have four websites the students will be accessing during class, I'll assign those four websites to four distinct Mission Control desktops (I'm using the 10.8.4 OS X).
    2. I run my presentiation from Keynote using the play key, but without access presentation mode.
    3. When I need to access a website while teaching, I [ALT]-[TAB] out of Keynote, select the appropriate page from Mission Control, and demo that page.
    4. When I'm done, I simply click the Keynote icon in the dock and resume my presentation.
This system works and I have no real complaints with it - except that I cannot take advantage of Keynote's presentation tools. I've tried any number of ways to toggle to a web browser while in presention mode without success. While in presentation mode, if I [ALT]-[TAB] out of the presentation, it simply stops the presentation and the web page doesn't appear on the projection display (because I'm not mirroring my displays) and the only way to get it to work is to re-mirror my displays.
I tried using the X command in Keynote, which is the toggle between displays, but no matter what I did, I cannot get the webpage to show up on the projection display.
Is there an easier way to do this? Bear in mind, I'm not merely showing webpages, but I'm actually interacting with them (performing research on these pages) so they have to be operational. Right now I'm assuming presentation mode is just not going to work for this kind of scenario.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

place as many shapes as you need on a slide and create a hyperlinks to your website
Keynote preferences > slide show;    select  >  allow Expose and others to use screen
select the shape and in Inspector > Hyperlink; select the enable as hyperlink box, then type in the address
use alt > tab to go back to Keynote
before playing Keynote, open and move the web browser on to the projector screen to position it ready for use

  • Can Mainstage 2 drive Apple Keynote, or other video/slides?

    Greetings fellow Keynoticians...
I've used Keynote for years in concert, and am looking to upgrade to '09. I'm also a Logic 8 newbie, and am looking to upgrade to 9, mainly for Mainstage 2. I'm a one-man band. Years ago I used to have a full-blown MIDI show with a simple footswitch driving sequencers, keys, drum machines, and complicated lighting all via a very cool setlist feature in a program called MasterTrax Pro (rest it's soul...they went out of business years ago, as did the support for newer OS's). I'm looking to resurrect this idea again in concert, and I'd like to add video/slides, if possible...
I'm looking to use a footswitch (Apogee GiO or Roland FC-300) to control Mainstage 2 in concert to call up/launch: Playback audio, guitar patches, do live looping, drive keyboard MIDI instruments & fx, and lighting cues via MIDI. I'm really psyched about this. (Looks like this will all work via MIDI control changes with Mainstage, and one of the above pedal boards connected to my MacBook Pro via USB, right?).
Here's my dilemma and main question: Is there any way that Mainstage 2 can drive Keynote (slides/video/text) via MIDI control/patch changes, or via some other protocol? (i.e. Hit a footswitch button, and it jumps to a specific slide/sequence, based on a MIDI control change, or other protocol?) Or, is there any way to drive other multi-media programs (Quicktime, Powerpoint, Mediashout, etc.) via Mainstage? My goal is to hit one footswitch which will launch both the audio (Mainstage) and video/slide-show (Keynote or other program) via MIDI-mapping in Mainstage, ideally both playing on the same computer, or 2 Macs synced, if necessary.
Seems simple enough, since there are programmable hand-held remotes that control Keynote (forward/back one slide, pause, blackout, etc.), I'm just not sure what protocol they're using (I'm not a programmer). Makes sense there would be a way to map MIDI control data thru the Mac OS to control Keynote (forward/back one slide, or ideally, skip to a specific slide/sequence, like with a MIDI program change), I just can't find anything on the support sites for Keynote, Mainstage, Logic, or the GiO or FC-300, or anything else with Google. Anyone try this before? Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
    Shawn

Thanks, Brian, I appreciate it. I think you're on to something...I don't think I'll need to actually see Mainstage, or anything else other than Keynote, so it might all work.
    To Follow up...
A friend from the Mainstage forum pointed me to Alien Apparatus Show Control application and footswitch. (www.alienapparatus.com). Below is my dialogue with their tech support. I will post again after I've had a chance to try it with Keynote, and/or Mainstage. I think my biggest question now is if Show Controller and Keynote running will work w/Mainstage at the same time (I really want to use it for the guitar rig, I think). Does anyone know if Show Controller will work with Mainstage and Keynote? Could someone test it for me if you have them? I don't have Mainstage 2. Here's the tech support dialogue:
So...here's my questions... Can you tell me:
+1) Can you use Show Controller to control Keynote specifically? Have you done it? Can you program Show Control to trigger the "keystrokes" in Keynote? Are "keystrokes" the same as "hotkeys", or is the a Mac OSX command? Can you email me some documentation/links about this? If not Keynote, is there any other program you can recommend that will play photo slide shows, video, lyrics w/beautiful transitions, that will respond to keystrokes and/or MIDI program changes from Show Controller that I can call up specific scenes from your foot controller with?+
Yes, you can control Keynote with the Hotkeys feature. Just to make sure of this, I just called up Show Controller and Keynote and did it. Yep, it certainly can be done. In fact, you can download the demo of Solo Performer Show Controller from our web site and you can give it a go yourself. Hotkeys are really just keypresses that you can send to other programs. In this case I sent right arrow keypresses to advance the Keynote slides. In the Hotkey editor of Solo Performer Show Controller, there is a field where you type in the keys to send. In this case, I want to send a right-arrow key. This is a "special" key that does not show up when you type in the field, so what you do is type "<right>" into the field. These "special" key commands are documented in both the manual and the online help. If you ever get stuck, just fire an email to me and ask.
+2) Can you run Show Controller on the same computer as Keynote? The Keynote Help in Keynote '08 talks about "Using Other Applications During a Presentation": To use Exposé, Dashboard, or other applications (such as Remote Desktop) while you’re playing a slideshow, you need to set a Keynote preference. Choose Keynote > Preferences, click Slideshow, and select “Allow Exposé, Dashboard, and others to use screen.” Selecting this option may cause your slideshow to run more slowly and animations to display poorly." Have you done this?+
You sure can run Show Controller and Keynote on the same computer. I just did it. One thing that I should point out, though, is that Keynote tries to take over your entire screen. If you have a second screen or projector (as you have indicated that you do), then you should be fine. Otherwise, you will only see Keynote unless muck about with Keynote's preferences as you've pointed out. If you're displaying on a second monitor (or projector), then you don't need to worry about any of this.
+3) Can you run Show Controller to drive Mainstage 2 and/or Logic, to take advantage of all the live audio capabilities (i.e. Pedal Board, real-time fx, soft synths, etc.) Have you done it?+
I've never done it personally. Generally I just run all of my audio form Solo Performer Show Controller. But you very likely can accomplish what you want. Solo Performer Show Controller can send MIDI commands that most audio programs will respond to. You can send MIDI commands to the IAC bus. This is how you send MIDI to programs that are running on your computer; its an "internal" MIDI chain. You just set up the receiving program to watch for MIDI on the IAC bus.
+4) Can Mainstage 2 be used as a slave to Show Controller? Can you run them both on the same mac? Have you done it?+
I've never done this, but I see no reason why it can't be done. Solo Performer Show Controller can send either MIDI or hotkeys out that Mainstage should respond to.
+5) Can you run Show Controller and Mainstage 2 on the same machine, or do you need 2 macs?+
You should be able to do this with one Mac.

  • Actions defined in Keynote are supported in iPad iBooks and not in iPad Keynote itself...

When I use actions in the build of slides produced with Keynote on my Mac, they work well on my iPad when I integrate this Keynote presentation in iBooks Author using the Keynote Widget.
But strangely enough actions used in a Keynote produced on my Mac, are not supported and ignored when I want to run that presentation in Keynote on my iPad.
So there are actually some Mac Keynote features that work in iPad's iBooks but not on iPad's Keynote.
Can anybody explain these inconsistencies between Apple apps please?

I came across this discussion and thought I could share something that I discovered today. This may help so here goes:
When creating a keynote presentation on the MAC OSX (Hyperlinks ONLY) (I use Lion 10.7.4), then sending to brand new iPad (Version 3) via iTunes, many of the Hyperlinks did not work as well. Heres what I found out by process of elimination, and you might try.
It turns out the Hyperlinks DO NOT WORK on the iPad when the hyperlinked item is part of a "Group" of items. The odd part is if you ungroup the items and then select ONLY the one item to be hyperlinked, then go to the tools, advanced, "Interactive hyperlinks" the hyperlink created on the Mac already shows up correctly, becuase it was there the whole time ! Bizzare, dont you think. For some reason Keynote on an iPad does NOT like any of the hyperlinks to be part of "grouped" items with any other items or they DON'T work !
MY solution is this (A slight paint, but it worked 100%) Create your entire presenation, then make a copy version of the file, then enter the new version and make sure  ALL hyperlinked items are ungrouped. Then resend to iTunes, and import into Keynote on iPad and Voila !!
    I hope this helps.

  • Keynote files deleting after update to 10.8.4

I performed a small edit to a Keynote file today after updating to 10.8.4 last night (used the combo updater).  The file crashed during a presentation and I though "no big deal, I'll just re-open it."  When I went to find it, it was completely gone.  Vanished.
I booted up Time Machine back at the office, restored the file, and chalked it up to some fluke.  Then I edited a different Keynote file.  It kept popping error messages about not being able to locate media files and I eventually closed it.  Again, I went to find the orginal file to re-open and it too has dissappeared.  This time, Time Machine wouldn't even let me restore it from a backup.
I ran disk utility and it found minor errors in the volume bitmap and free space remaining.  So I booted to the recorvery partition and repaired successfully.
I'm up and running again, but my Keynote file is still missing.  I'm afraid to open Keynote again for fear of this happening again.
Is there any known issue with 10.8.4 corrupting the file system, particulary when opening and editing Keynote files?
(15 " Retina MBP, latest model with 768 GB)

    GordonGecko9:
    - First, make sure you back up all remaining Keynote presentations. Hopefully, you have a backup of the one that got deleted.  I had to get a copy from another folder. Once the file was deleted, Time Machine suddenly thought it was never there in the first place too.  That's right, the deleted file was also deleted from Time Machine--even months back.
    - Once you have backups of your files, run Disk Utility and see if there are any errors.  I had a few, so booted into the Recovery partition and repaired.
    - Remove all your Keynote .plist files from the directory: /Users/your username/Library/Preferences.  Your Library folder will be hidden unless you hold the OPTION key and then select the GO menu at the top.  You can just move these files out of that folder and keep them elsewhere if you want them again.
    - Check your console log to see if any errors were reported about the time of the crash.  I had some message about Flip4Mac confilciting with another video codec, so I deleted Flip4Mac.  Not sure if it mattered, but I didnt' really need it anyway.
    - Since you have backups of your files now, you can start playing around with Keynote again to see if your problem is solved.  Here is what I found:
    > After deleting the .plist files, I sill had issues after editing presenations.  The changes would take, but then when I went to save the file, I got an error message that the location couldn't be found.  When I chose "Save As" isntead, Keynote crashed.  However, when I rellaunced Keyonte, the file was saved in its orginal location. (Before I deleted the .plist files, the presenation was gone after Keynote crashed).
    > Subsequent edits and saves worked normally on the same file.  As I opened other presenations from the same folder in the finder, I got the same errors (crashing and file not saving).  But then, upon relaunch everything seemed fine.
It seems that something with 10.8.4 is causing directory errors with Keynote files.  When you go to save an edited presenation, it gets confused about where to put it and the file gets deleted instead.
Please keep me posted on if the above "fix" works for you and if you notice anything else.

  • Keynote Crashes When I Move Objects With Arrow Keys

    Subject explains it all.
This happens on both my 2.4GHZ Intel iMac and G4 powerbook.
Machines are running OS 10.5.2 and Keynote 2.0.2
I've bought both Leopard and Keynote and installed all the software from the CDs.

The advice I would take from the last post would be used only to isolate the issue as it might relate to a system wide issue or a user specific issue. In other words, can we determine Keynote's behavior as being related to your home account and those files in your folder or the System (OS) level files? Read on please…
If, after creating a new user account and logging into and Keynote continues to behave the same way, then potentially there is file outside your homefolder responsible for this. The file in question would, I'm sure you would agree, be a file related to Keynote's functionality and is accessed while Keynote is in use.
When Keynote is attempting to follow your instructions it may be accessing a file that it relies on.
A program which you can download to troubleshoot the issue is called appzapper, you can visit the developer's site here: http://appzapper.com/
My suggestion would be to download this little app. Install it>drag and drop Keynote onto AppZapper. AppZapper will do its' best to find files relevant to the Keynote application and give you an opportunity to trash them.
If you are curious as to the files AppZapper associates with Keynote, copy the name of those files and do a Google search to find out more about those files.
In most cases the list of files, AppZapper associates are harmless if trashed, just make sure Keynote is not open while doing this or Keynote may sort of ask itself what is going on and behave oddly, a quit and relaunch should fix that if you forget to quit Keynote.
Good target files that AppZapper might find are what are known as .plist files, plist as in PropertyList. .plist files typically store application preferences. So if you have ever gone to the preferences for Keynote in this case and modified the settings that .plist file would have stored those changes you set. If you move the .plist files to the trash, Keynote, upon a relaunch will say to itself, oh look, my .plist files are missing and simply regenerate those .plist files.
The point here is if the .plist files were corrupt and Keynote was accessing those file(s) it would try to read the file and say to itself, hey I don't know how to read this and in this case, shut itself down.
AppZapper may find more than just .plist files, investigate any files you feel hesitant to trash using your our old friend Google to learn about what it is you are going to trash.
In most cases what AppZapper finds is safe enough to trash, just be sure to close Keynote before running this to keep Keynote from running into any unexpected surprises. It would be like yanking candy from a child's hand - that wouldn't be too nice.
Finally if the issue persists, using DVD1 that came bundled with your mac, you should be able to install the bundled software only.
Reinstalling Keynote or iLife should also be considered as a solution.
An entire OS purchase or OS re-installation is definitely overkill and not an elegant solution, not to mention the downtime.
The solution I am proposing hopefully makes common sense to you and gives you an overview in terms of understanding that there are files other than the application file related to any application's overall function.
AppZapper is a small download and may help you locate that stubborn file causing you grief.
That being said, creating a new user account on your mac and logging into it to isolate issues as being system wide or user specific is indeed the way to go to isolate issues in those terms.
    Keep us posted.

  • Can't upload my '08 keynote presentations to my iPad 2 '09.

I have multiple talks that I've made using my MacBook 2006 running snow leopards and keynote '08.  I would like to have my presentations on my iPad 2 for several reasons - it's easier to carry around my iPad 2 and the talks are more accessible on the iPad; they open more quickly.
I've connected my iPad to my MacBook and added the talks under apps successfully, but when I go to the iPad Keynote app to copy the presentation from iTunes, it starts to download, but then I get a message stating that only presentations saved in iWork '09 can be imported.  Now here's the rub.  I decide to update keynote '08 on my MacBook to '09 by going to the App Store, but when I try to purchase the new app, I get a message stating that keynote '09 is only compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 aka lion.  Ok.  I go to download lion, which I learn has been updated to mountain lion (I know I'm a little behind, but I really use my iPad 2 more now), so I go to download mountain lion, but I get a message that it's not compatible with my MacBook.  It's compatible with MacBooks made post 2007.  So, I've actually been contemplating buying a new MacBook, but as mentioned, I really want to use my iPad more.  The main reason to buy a new MacBook would be to be able to use keynote '09 so I can save my keynote '08 talks in keynote '09 so I can get it onto my iPad 2, which would then negate the need for a MacBook.  WHAT SHOULD I DO!

Buying a MacBook purely to convert some files does not appear to be an economic investment.
There are many friends and colleagues would convert the Keynote files for me, my local Apple dealer would also do this fro free.
Ask around and see if the files can be converted, then import to iPad and save on the MacBook purchase.

  • Keynote hyperlink to new file

When a hyperlink is set to open a new file, is there a way to automatically close existing file when new one is opened?

    Welcome to the forums, ChrisEsch.
Having no hands-off (or even cursorless) solution is a real problem. You might export just the music-laden presentation as a high-res full-screen QT movie, and embed that as a full-slide video on the first slide of the "second" presentation. Or, if the presentation will loop continuously, a better solution might be to export both the Keynote presentation and the soundtrack into iMovie, edit the video to the audio, and create a Quicktime movie.
You might also be able to cobble something together in Applescript that automatically runs the second presentation when the first finishes, and keeps looping until stopped.
As for the black between presentations, I'm not sure there's a good answer for that within Keynote, at least not one that isn't terribly cumbersome (such as running two copies of Keynote and switching between them again using Applescript). Again, exporting one of the presentations as a movie that runs on a single slide of the other would solve this.

  • Can I run a presentation without the presenter display?

Here's the setup: Mac Mini in the office attached to a 32" Sony Bravia on the wall outside the office and a 19" LCD locally. I'd like to run a slideshow out on the Bravia, but maintain my desktop inside. I can disable the 'Use alternate display to view presenter information' from within Preferences, but that blanks out my local screen while running the slideshow on the HDTV. I want to be able to run the presentation within Keynote, but keep the ability to work on other things on the desktop. Anybody done this?
PS, i know I can export the slideshow as a QT video and drag it to the second display and loop it, but I'd like to be able to change slides on the fly without rendering a whole new movie to play on the second screen. Thanks for any input!

Under Keynote preferences, there is an option for "Present on Primary Display", or "Display on Secondary Display". Does this not work when you choose secondary display and nave it leave your primary display as your Finder window? Just curious, since I don't have two displays to try it.

  • Keynote animations malfunction

    Hi commers,
First post so bear with me. I checked similar questions but while I found similar issues my search didn't turn up any solutions.
I'm having trouble with the damnable Diamond DisplayLink WPCTVPRO, software version 1.0, on my office's Macbook Pro running OS 10.85.
I know that DisplayLink doesn't support 3d OpenGL hardware acceleration, and even with their software version 2.0 for iOS the problem still remains, (I haven't actually tried it. I just checked the release notes and saw that the issue persists with 2.0. I think they are waiting/urging Apple to fix this). In any case I'm thinking that there might be some workaround within Keynote but my familiarity with the program is limited. Possibly "dumbing down" keynote's display properties in some way. Can I turn off hardware acceleration? lower the hertz? a specific animation toggle box hidden deep within a menu rabbit hole? I apologize if this is horribly vague. I will happily answer any questions or clarifications if needed. I would really appreciate any help or if anyone else has had an experience with this, found a workaround, etc that would be amazing. You would honestly make me the hero of the office and I would happily share the glory with you.

ARGH (why did they get rid of the edit feature?!)
to state my problem specifically (sorry) what I am running into is that Keynote animations/animated slides are not displaying properly or at all (mostly at all) while using the DisplayLink adapter on a Macbook pro.

  • How to connect the iPad to a VGA projector

I read the comments about using the iPad with a VGA projector for presentations, but those were for the original iPad. My association is asking me to present a live demonstration of the new iPad 2. I tested the iPad 2 with the digital connector to HDMI on my TV and that works great. I can move around all the screens on my iPad and even play Angry Birds.
But what about connecting this iPad 2 to a VGA projector? All the earlier comments referred to that process as "very limited" with only a few apps running on it, like Keynote. That won't do for my presentation. Is there a solution or does the new iPad 2 fully support a standard (read old) VGA projector?
    Thank you for your replies.
    Jean Feuillet

It is my understanding that the dgital adapter will give you full video mirroring over HDMI from the iPad 2, although there are some reported models of TVs and projectors that have issues, but that analog signaling, such as VGA, is limited to apps specifically written to provide access to that type of video connection.
