Running Airport utility wirelessly, doesn't see my basestation

Here's a possibly stupid question, but I hate to mess around with my Airport Extreme setup once i have it working.
When I try to run Airport Utility connected wirelessly from my laptop, it does not see my base station or the express I have extending it.
if i connect directly with an ethernet cable, it sees it just fine.
I can scan for the station but it just won't see it unless I plug in the cable.
What do I have set up wrong?

The Windows Firewall and or anti-virus program on the PC is likely blocking the wireless connection atttempt.
Probably best to leave things alone unless you are familiar with creating "exceptions" in the Windows Firewall and/or anti-virus programs.

  • Airport utility v6 doesn't see old airport extreme 1st ten

Using new version 6 Airport Utility, does not see older Airport Extreme (1st gen) that is on my network.  It sees my newer AP extreme and shows the ID for old machine yet I can't get to it to change configuration.

You will need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to be able to access and make changes to any of the older AirPort products. AirPort Utility 6.0 only works with newer "n" devices.
You can use the more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure all of your AirPorts...old or new.
Just keep both versions on your Mac and use the one that you want.

  • I'm trying to activate my Airport Express to a wireless network powered by an Airport Extreme.  I get an error message that says I need to Use Airport Utility 5.6.  My system is currently running Airport Utility 6.1

'm trying to activate my Airport Express to a wireless network powered by an Airport Extreme.  I get an error message that says I need to Use Airport Utility 5.6.  My system is currently running Airport Utility 6.1

Is your AirPort Express an older 802.11g model? If so, you will need to install v5.6 if you are running OS X Lion or 5.6.1 if running OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, the iOS version of the AirPort Utility cannot administer these older base stations.

  • After port forward, airport utility can no longer see my time capsule

I tried to forward public port 1025 to private port 80 on a raspberry pi using  airport utility. But after I did that,  the airport utility can no longer see my time capsule. Wifi still works correctly. Are there any conflicts about port 1025? How to fix that other than resetting the time capsule?
    Thanks,
    Michael

It doesn't sound like a port that is used.
From the standard google search.. nope.
    Reboot the whole network..
No luck tell me what OS version you are running the utility on and what model and firmware TC???
Note with Yosemite, anything can and will happen.

  • Airport Utility can no longer see my Airport Express Base Station.

    Hi all the problem I have is as follows;
I've set up my Airport Express Base Station some time ago to print wirelessly from my HP Photosmart C4280 and it was working fine.
However recently when I've gone to print a document, even though the printer is working fine and the Airport Express Base Station is showing a green light nothing happens. I've gone into the Airport Utility and its say's it can't see the Airport Express Base Station (even though it still has a green light showing). If I unplug the Airport Express and plug it in again, the Airport Utility can suddenly see it again.
I've successfully gone through the reset process but after a few minutes the Airport Utility can no longer see the Airport Express Base Station which means I can't print a document wirelessly. I've repeated the reset process several times with the same outcome.
Everything was working fine up until recently, has the Airport Express Base Station developed a fault? or is there something I'm not doing.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're comfortable resetting all settings, unplug it, hold down the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug it back in - keep holding it for another 10-20s until the amber light flashes
Then, open airport utility, now you should be able to see the device either on-screen or in the upper left under 'other wi-fi devices'

  • After any settings update, Airport utility can no longer see airport

I see many complaints on the internet, but no solutions.
If I go into the airport extreme via the utility and make some changes that require the airport to reboot, it becomes invisible to the airport utility. Therefore, anytime I want to make changes, I have to make them all at once and redo everything if I ever need an additional change.
I see that Apple support wants $29 for a call, however I have an extended warranty from the store I bought it from. It is probably a waste of time and money for all parties involved, but I could just bring it back every time I get a chance and get a new one until a new firmware update arrives.
Does anyone know if there is a fix -- like reverting to older versions of the firmware or the utility?
Details: Connection: wired ethernet. Utility version 5.4.2 Firmware 7.42
Sometimes a soft reset works to restore visibility and my settings survive. Sometimes a hard reset is required. Other than that, it appears to work just fine. If I didn't need to regularly maintain port mappings I probably won't care -- but I do and this is the most expensive router I have purchased for home use by far. The problem is easily repeatable so this is definitely a bug.

I have the same issue. I used to be able to get to my Airport Extreme by going to the File menu in Airport Utility and typing in its IP address and password but even that doesn't work anymore... What's going on Apple?
I'm accessing my AE over ethernet due to wi-fi bugs in Snow Leopard.

  • Leopard 10.5.2 - airport utility app doesn't detact anything

I'v got an airport extreme, by which I'm connected to the internet (wireless or ethernet, no problem here). But my MacBook can't find find any airport (airport utility app). So I can't configure my airport (ethernet or wireless). I can't use airdisk nor my printer. I rebooted both devices, have got all the latest updates, ...
    any ideas?
    thanks a lot,
    Pieter

Thanks for the help and sorry for the delay, been too busy and WIFI still worked, but now I really want to use airdisk and my printer. I resetted multiple times. When I reset, airport utility app detects the airport extreme, but hangs on reading the configuration.
So I switched to a windows laptop and Windows had no trouble finding the airport extreme, nor configuring the airport. I set the channel to 9, but no use. Pretty desperate right now, maybe I should switch to Windows to use apple hardware? Another strange thing is that I have the same problem from Windows on my macbook (running VMWare Fusion). Maybe this is an hardware issue, but I have no problems with WIFI, just with the configuration of my airport extreme.
    kind regards,
    Pieter

  • After configuring my airport express, airport utility can no longer see it.

Configuring airport express seems to make it invisible to itunes and the airport utility that configured it. This seems to have started happening since Yosemite.

Sorry, can you explain what you mean by the AirPort Express is invisible to iTunes.
In any case, it sounds like something glitches when setting up the APE. Reset it using these instructions, then configure it again to see if that helps:

  • If someone can access my airport timecapsule wireless can they see my backup files too?If someone can access my airport timecapsule wireless can they see my backup files too?

I have 4 iMacs in the office and we are using the Airport Time Capsule 3TB to wirelessly back them up.
It is connected to the main wireless modem router.
I'd like everyone in the office (iMacs, PCs and guests) to connect to the internet through the Airport Capsule. (As I may have to move the main router out into another room to connect it to the built in ethernet cable network).
I'm concerned, though, that anyone who can access the wireless internet functions of the Timecapsule will also be able to see and copy the backup files on there.
    Should I be worried?

In normal operation, Macs can only "see" the backups that have been made from their own Mac. They cannot "see" the backups made on another Mac. Try it and see.
With some tricky workarounds that only a devious person would use, it is possible to "see" the main backup file of another Mac......but they would also have to have the user name and password for that Mac.....or actually be using that Mac to see inside the main file and access specific backups.
A bit safer and probably more reliable approach would have a backup hard drive connected to each Mac.
But, even then someone who really wanted the files would probably just take the hard drive.

  • Cannot connect my new nook to the airport utility wireless

I have a new nook and am trying to access the wireless to purchase a book and cannot do so.  I think I know my password, but am not sure.  I called Apple and they told me they did not have it and now I am studk.  Help! Thanks!

I have the same problem.  I can connect at the Barnes and Noble store and in my office, but I cannot connect at home.  Other people can connect to Airport with MACs and PCs.  Both my iPhone and iPad2 have no problems connecting.  Is there anyone out there who can help?

  • My Airport base station doesn't see the cable modem

I know I have internet upto the Wan Port. I can get online if I connect directly to my laptop, put not if I try to connect through the airport. Any ideas?

Are you completely powering off the cable modem....pulling the power cord from the back of the device or the wall plug.....and then leaving it powered off for at least 30 minutes?
Then, connecting the AirPort to the modem?
If no luck, see if the modem has an accessible battery that you can pull as well for the power down session.
Some providers take even longer to reset the connection back at the equipment at the cable company, so try powering off the modem a few hours if 30 minutes does not work.
Finally, it may be necessary to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort to start all over again.

  • AirPort Utility Can't See Extreme via Non-Apple Bridge

I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station serving my network. Connected to the APExtreme I have a non-Apple brand wi-fi router that's in bridge mode so that a few devices in another room can still get wired network and the upstairs section of the house that's too far from the AirPort can get Wi-Fi via the non-Apple router's Wi-Fi.
It all works fine and speeds are fast. However, my MacBook Pro is one of the devices hooked up to the non-Apple via wired Ethernet. When I open the AirPort Utility it doesn't see the APEXtreme.
Is this as expected or should it still be able to find the AirPort through the Bridge? If the latter is true, what's keeping mine from seeing it? Any suggestions?

You need to spell out the connection.. is this non-apple device connected by ethernet or is it a universal wireless repeater/bridge.
What is the make and model of the box that is acting as repeater.. also if 3rd party firmware tell us clearly what you are running.
In most wireless repeater, client bridge setups you have a big problem.. as all clients behind the repeater look like the same device to the main AE. It cannot tell what is who.. and is also likely to have bonjour issues.. which is essential for things like airport utility to work.

Try a manual access. Find the IP of the AE.. from something that is plugged into it.. if normal default router mode it will show, 10.0.1.1
    In airport utility have you
    1. Changed over to ethernet.. nothing will show without doing this.. it always defaults to wireless. In an extremely odd way ethernet devices are shown under Other Wi-Fi Devices.. isn't that completely obvious!!
    2. Ensure you have ipv6 set on ethernet to link-local only.
    3. If nothing shows up do it even more manually and type in the address you already discovered.
No password is needed if defaults.. but also type in your access password if you changed it.
You should then get the full summary screen.

I just purchased a new computer that runs windows 8 and it doesn't want to recognize the time capsule as an external hard drive (ie doesn't show up under my compter).  I've downloaded and run airport utility, but it seems to have a hard time finding the time capsule...maybe one out of 10 times it will find it.
What's more, when I look under network infrastructure under the control panel, it shows my Broadcom ADSL centurylink Router...so I'm wondering if my modem/router combo is overriding the router function on my timecapsule and the time capsule is not being used as a router...
    Any help much appreciated!

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

  • Installed the latest update, now Airport Utility doesn't see Airport

I ran the latest update, now my Airport Utility claims to not see my Airport Extreme although I'm still on my network.? Any suggestions before I completely reset the AE to factory settings and start over.

I purchased a new Airport Extreme last week, I run a home network with a G5 desktop and a G4 Laptop running 10.4.10. It took me a while to set it up as I entered the wrong password for my ISP SBCGlobal. After I finally had it going I had a couple of occasions where Airport Utility did not see Airport but I still had the solid green light on Airport. I am not sure what I did that resolved the problem but I know I did a restart one time and my Airport showed up. I may have also reset my base station and re-entered my info but I no longer have the problem.

  • Cannot see Timecapsule in Airport Utility on Windows XP

Just purchased a 2T TC and can connect MBP and Macbook air ok.
I also have a Lenovo laptop with Windows XP that uses TC for internet access that works ok. When I run Airport Utility (v5.5.3) on Windows XP it cannot see the TC. I have Bonjour Printer Services installed as well
Main reason I want to connect to TC is to access a Canon MP800 MFP printer connected to the TC via USB.
Appreciate any help or suggestions ( and I know I should upgrade to Windows 7 or Mac OSx however that is not an option at the moment :-).

Hi I dont think it is a ethernet/wireless issue - wireless on XP laptop works in other networks and in fact can connect to TC router - I am just not seeing the TC when I use Airport on the Windows XP machine.
Taking a different approach - I have been able to set up a local pinter on the XP laptop using an IP port that points to the USB printer connected to the TC and this works.
I am still intrigued as to why Airport on XP cannot see the TC however the workaround is fine
Thanks for the ideas LaPastenague - much appreciated
