Is it possible to install a app on IPhone and allow it to run in the background?

The iPhone does not allow background applications for performance and usability reasons. Background apps affect performance, and managing priority and resources for background applications can be a UI nightmare. This is discussed during the WWDC Keynote in more detail.
However, in the near future applications developers will be able to use an application push service to allow notifications when the application is not running.
I would recommend watching the WWDC Keynote for more details.

My iphone 5 battery has been very reliable so I had it replaced today. But I'm also running a system monitoring activity app which says my camera is running but when I click on home screen, the camera is not on the open apps list. Please help

If Apple replaced the battery, bring it back to them, your phone is still under warranty.
If a 3rd party repair shop did that, show them your device and ask them to fix it, Apple does not service devices that have been opened by other companies.

That's definitely strange, kzmidge. I want a working phone in your hands though. I noticed you mentioned you received the suggestion to complete a reset. Did you already do that? Is it working again? Are you receiving an error message?
If you hesitated a little longer to complete the reset, you can try to place your phone into Safe Mode http://vz.to/rxg0ii and see if you can access mobile sites from your browser. This mode will stop 3rd party applications from running, so you won't be able to use the apps you mentioned but we may be able to narrow down the trouble in Safe Mode. If the mobile sites work, that means the trouble may be in a recently downloaded application and you may be able to avoid the reset my uninstalling some of your more recently installed applications. If it's still giving you trouble, the reset http://vz.to/18wzOCi is the next best step.

Double click the Home button and "slide" the open apps 'UP" with your finger, they will disappear.

They changed it a bit, but you can still close apps. Double click the Home button to pull up the currently running apps. Side scroll over to the app you want to close, then swipe up on the app *window* (not the icon at the bottom).

Do you mean u have no idea what apps they are? You could try Activity Monitor, but be careful there that you won't close / quit apps which might be needed by your system..
If you have some apps which startup in the background when logging in, you can find it in system preferences -> Users & Groups, select your user and then select the tab Login Items.

I just updated to an Iphone 6, with the latest version of IOS. It's a great product, but for me there is one annoyance. There are times when my memory gets low. I find out that it's the apps that are running in the background. I personally don't use this. All it does is hog memory. Then, to close the apps, you have to close each one individually. I forgot how many apps I have open, I'm of the mindset that when I close the app, that it's "really" closed, not still running in the background. It would be nice if there was a way to disable this function. It doesn't seem to serve a purpose for me in the way I use the Iphone. I just "cleaned up my list of "behind the scenes apps" and I had about 20. It gets frustrating to have to go to each one to close it. Any comments or suggestions?

Some things that might help:
1. Only the most recently used apps actually occupy memory (used to be the most recent 4, but may have changed in the latest iPhones). After 4 (or so), IOS writes them out of active memory, as it does for even the latest 4 if there's no activity for a long time. So the business of closing all the open apps, apart from the most recent ones doesn't make a difference. Tis article has a good explanation:

2. There are settings about background app activity that might help:
- Settings, General, Background App Refresh controls which apps can update their data in the background
- Settings, Notifications controls which apps can tell you things, which they have to wake up to do.
- Settings, Privacy, Location Services controls which apps monitor your location - another activity that uses resources

Apps running in the background

It seems to be if you have the app linked to a watch complication or you have it on your glances page, then those apps loads much faster. I figure they are always running so the data can be displayed on the watch face or quickly at a glance.
So if you have every possible app on your glances page, then your battery life would drain much faster than if you have fewer apps.
I only have 3-4 apps on my glances page and I can easily get 20 hours of battery life, and this includes a 1 hour workout using GPS and HR monitoring.

Tbh, the biggest battery drain is your email push settings. I'd look at those before worrying about terminating background apps.
You can see everything that's running on your phone by using a "process monitor" app. I use one called "iStat". Unfortunately, iStat can only show you what's running, it can;t actually kill anything. It will definitely tell you which of the 1st party programs (browser, email, ipod) are running in the background.
If you actually want to kill one of these, the procedure is:
Open the app in question (e.g. launch the ipod app)
Hold the power/sleep button until the red slider appears.
Hold the sleep button for around 6 seconds (eventually the red slider will disappear and you will be returned to the home screen).
Whichever app was running (e.g. ipod) will now be forced to close.
** note: To close safari, you can simply close all the "tabs" down, and then exit. If you close safari when there are no tabs in use, it will completely shut down.

GarageBand running in the background with video app open

I was wondering if GarageBand will run in the background while I'm using the video app on the iPad. Basically, I'm looking to have my guitar running into my iPad with GarageBand running, while watching/following along with a guitar video lesson I also have on my iPad. Can the two programs run simultaneously, or will the video app eliminate the sounds I would get from GarageBand? Thanks.

Yes, I've done that while playing youtube videos with the youtube app (I'm still using ios 5.1).
Just go the wrench icon in Garageband and turn on "Run in Background".

Will not complete a sync without crashing and saying cannot read to the device or something to that effect.

Running Apps in the Background 2.1?

Now that 2.1 is out can anybody confirm that the you can now run 3rd party Apps in the background? They mentioned that ability back when they introduced the iPhone 3G but I haven't heard any talk about it recently with this update. Anybody able to install the update and confirm or deny this?

They must have. No apps have been able to run in the background even on 1g iphone. Maybe because Apple realize that the battery wouldn't last 2 hours with apps running in the background.
