Running ARD 2.2 on OS 10.5

I'm trying to launch ARD 2.2 on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5 and not having much luck. It begins to 'install required components' but before it can finish it quits.
Found an article on apple's website that lists steps to use to install ARD 2.2 on Intel-based macs (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303128). In step 3 it says to select ARD in the Sharing preference pane but ARD isn't listed there.
Is ARD 2.2 incompatible with OS 10.5?
If so, what are my alternatives?
Thanks!

ARD 2.2 is not supported on Leopard. At least one user (raus), though, posted here that he got ARD 2.2 to work in Leopard. Here's what he did: from the Finder, navigate to:
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteMangement
From the folder, delete (or move) the ARDAgent v3.X file. Reinstall the 2.2 update for ARD on the Apple site. (This may be optional; the original poster just reinstalled the update to be safe.) You can reportedly now run Remote Desktop 2.2 in 10.5. This works for PowerPC and Intel Mac.
Note, though, that this is completely unsupported by Apple and may or may not work, or may cause issues. For proper support for Leopard, you need ARD 3.2.
Good luck.

  • Run ARD administrer from a remote computer

Sorry if this has been answered previously; searching with terms like remote and administrator doesn't restrict many responses.
I have installed ARD on one of my Leopard Servers and I would like run it from my desktop computer as I do the server applications. Is this possible or do I have to be sitting at the server run ARD? I have checked through the Administrators Guide but can't find anything about this but it seem like a natural thing to want to do
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Bill

If you don't need to run ARD from your workstation, you could have just the single copy of ARD on the server and take control of that via 10.5 screen sharing (that should still work with the ARD admin app running on the server, though I've never tried it) or VNC. Then you wouldn't need two copies of ARD. If you want ARD on your workstation as well, though, then you will need to purchase a second copy of ARD if you don't have two copies now.

  • Want to connect to client's server with ARD, and run ARD on the server.

Hi, I have Apple Remote Desktop and use it to monitor, update and service clients servers. I also have client's buy ARD to use internally to access, update and maintain computers on the network.
When I try to access/sign-in to a server with ARD, when it's running ARD, it will not connect.
What is the proper way to ARD into a server and still be able to run ARD on the server to connect with and work on other computers on the local network?
    Thanks in advance.

On the client server install of ARD, open ARD, select preferences, select security tab, and make sure "allow control of this computer when ARD is running" is selected.

  • I run ARD 2.2, have 2.0 disc, need to set up Intel Mac clients

    Hi,
What's the easiest way to do that?
One has tried to install 2.0 and it gets stuck while "finalizing" the installation (may have been on the computer before). The other I haven't tried yet, but he knows NOTHING about computers (thus the need for ARD).
What's the simplest way to get them both up and running?
They should both be on relatively current OSes (10.4.8-10).
I've seen many posts talking about getting the ADMIN up and running, but not sure what's the shortest, simplest, shortest way to get Clients going.
    They need the disc, right?
Then they need to install it (but that's where one of them gets stopped)
Then they need to NOT open the program once installed
They need to find the client update to 2.2 and install it
Then they can open up the program and enter the program code
Does that sound right or no?
Is a 2.0 client truly installed on machines to begin with? The one that may have had it before had a system that said it wasn't installed (in Sharing), but after the failed install, it said the computer did have it, but it won't work.
It gets stuck in the same spot in installation.
Why is it so complicated to support a product sold to me not that long before 3 was released? Shouldn't have to scrap the whole thing when I didn't really get a chance to use the product. Don't recall it saying Intel Macs not supported.
Thanks for any and all help.

    They need the disc, right?
Wrong. Any Intel-based Mac system already has the 2.2 ARD client installed, so all you need to do is activate it in the Sharing -> Remote Desktop privileges. You do not need to reinstall the client nor should you; reinstalling from a disk or downloaded updater will overwrite the Intel-native client with the PowerPC one and then it work work correctly. If you've already overwritten the Intel client on a workstation, you'll have to use Pacifist to extract it for reinstallation or (perhaps easier) do an Archive and Install reinstallation of Mac OS X on the Intel systems.

  • I'm running ARD 3.2 on Tiger 10.4.11

I'm running Tiger on a Macbook Pro, and also Tiger on an older G4 with Tiger also. I set up ARD 3.2 properly, as I was able to control the G4. But all of sudden one day I couldn't log onto the G4 as the MacBook Pro ARD would just hang at connecting to G4. It won't even time out, it'll just sit there trying to connect.
I can connect to that same G4 with my PC via VNC Viewer. So I'm not sure what's happened. I've uninstalled ARD on the MacBook Pro, but I'm not sure how to uninstall ARD on the G4 as I only use the client there. But I haven't gotten ARD to work since it suddenly stopped.
Thanks. Oh this is not over the internet, it's all local network.

Chicken of the VNC shouldn't hurt since it's a client, not a server (VNC terminology is the reverse of how the ARD docs refer to "client"). CotVNC doesn't install anything other than the app itself, so I doubt it would be the problem. The ARD client does indeed work as a VNC server; that's how the ARD admin itself does observe and control, via the VNC protocols. The problem would arise if you installed something like OpenVNC on the workstation you're trying to connect to; that would bollix up ARD.
How do you simply log in as sudo user, so I can just execute all the terminal commands without sudo(ing) everytime.
You would have to log in as root, as far as I know. Otherwise you have to use sudo.

  • Problems running ARD 3 with Lion

Ever since I updated to OS X Lion, my ARD will not start, it says "The Remote Desktop Administrator software does not match the installed Client software version."  Any ideas?

A further update on my problem with ARD 3.5.
Tried to use screen sharing and it too does not work. Old reliable Chicken of the VNC does seem to work but can be flakey. Tried to access the server (Mac Mini 10.7 ARD Client 3.5.1) from iMac running 10.6.7. Works ok.
Took a clean disk install ard 3.5 cannot access server just hangs. Will connect in observe mode but hangs if you try to switch to control mode.
    This is just crazy!
The hardware that doesn't work is a MBP 13" Mid 2009 model running 10.7. Server 10.7 is running on Mid 2009 Mac Mini and seems ok. Boy did they dumb down the server control interface!!

  • Getting  ARD 2.2 to launch/run on intel mac

Ive seen some posting on how to run ard 2.2 on a intel mac which suggest the following:
    uninstall ARD
    remove client software(RemoteManagement folder)
    install ARD
    upgrade using ard admim upgrader
but when i open ard it says it had to install some necessary components and does sucessfully then just up and quits...any workaround would be helpful-
    thx

    Hope you have a backup.
Reinstalling OS X should not have any effect on applications or user data.
Erase and Install will wipe out the disk clean.
Safari and Mail should not be deleted.
    Best.

  • ARD client running, but admin cannot connect

I am attempting to connect to a Mac OSX 10.4.11 client, but my ARD administrator does not even see that the target client is running ARD when in fact it is. I can see the client's IP address in the scanner list, but unable to connect. Help?

Just because it can see the IP address in the scanner list doesn't mean the client software is enabled. I can run a scan and see the address of every host on my LAN, including printers, NAS devices and Windows PCs.
Have you actually verified that the client is enabled and the appropriate access privileges have been given?

  • Half of my ard clients have gone rogue... (offline, sleeping, denied)

I have 18 iMacs on a Windows Active Directory network. At the end of the last school year I could control and manage all 17 (one new one this summer).
This year I can only control 8 of the 18. The other 10 say either: Offline, Sleeping, or Access Denied. For all 10 if I try to manage or observe any of them I simply get one of these messages: Connection Failed or Authentication failed.
What changed over the summer is this:
    1. We added subnets to segregate printers, switches, computers, etc from all being on the same subnet. The iMacs are all on one subnet
    2. We changed the iMacs from fixed IP addresses to DHCP. All of the computers have talked to the DHCP server and have valid IP addresses. They can also have their leases renewed without problem.
    3. We added the 18th computer which is a new iMac with Snow Leopard. All of the other computers have Leopard
    4. I have checked the security, network, and sharing settings for all 18 of the computers and they all match in the fields that I tried.
    5. I should add that when I set up the first 17 machines I had the help of an outside consultant who showed me how to connect to the domain, etc. I am still a rank novice and need help figuring out why ten machines decided to go offline as far as ARD is concerned?

I'm having a similar issue here at my job. I have 2 computers running ARD on our network. One of them can see and control every computer on the network fine. The other computer can see every computer on the network but 1. There is a lone iMac that doesn't show up in that computer's list of clients. If I choose to scan using Bonjour it will see the missing iMac, but if I try to "Get Info" on it, the info is very limited. If I try to "Observe" it, it fails to verify. If I try to add the iMac by IP address it fails to verify. The only difference I can see is every other computer has a "-" in the DNS Name column but this one. This iMac has the full computer name "Accounting5.local" showing.
Any ideas for me to try to get this ARD to see/control this iMac correctly again? I'm stumped.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

  • ARD no longer shows "control computer", only "screen sharing avail"??

I have been running ARD for well over a year on my iMac to manage several servers that are located far away from me.
I normally use the "copy" feature to push new zip files of our Web site to the server when it is updated. When logging into ARD today, I noticed all the servers are no longer showing "Control". Instead they all have "Screen Sharing Available" listed in the current status column. When I go to copy my files from my local machine to the servers, I get an error: "This Task Will Fail - The remote desktop software is not active on www.servername.com".
However if I select a server and then click the control button, I can still connect to the server fully and work with it?
This has never happened before and I am at a loss as to the issue. I have had some changes to my local setup recently that may be the cause of the problem.
    1) Linksys router died, replaced it with a Apple Airport Extreme.
    2) Keychain got corrupted. Deleted the login.keychain file to rebuild a new one.
I have restarted my iMac several times, and even restarted the servers to see if this would clear up the problem. No luck.
If I try and drag-copy my zip files to the servers from my local machine after connecting via ARD, the window that asks if I want to send the file ignores my click on the "send" button and does nothing? Before this problem occurred I could easily drag-copy items.
Does anyone know what could be causing this to occur or how I can reset/fix my ARD clients and servers?

Okay I have figured out part of the problem and fixed it, although one issue still persists.
I fixed the "Current Status" issue for my servers by adding port 5900 & 3283 to the port forwarding settings in my Airport Extreme via the Airport Utility application. I don't remember having port forwarding turned on for my (now dead) Linksys router, but I could be mistaken.
Now I have a different problem. When I go to "copy" a file from my local machine to a remote server, I get a message that says "This task will fail: A console user is not logged in on www/servername/com"
If I log into that computer first, I am able to copy items, but I remember being able to copy items to my remote servers before without having to first sign into them? Am I mistaken on this or have I uncovered another problem?
    Any help appreciated.

  • ARD 3.3.2 problem with connecting to 10.5.8 server

    Hi,
I am running ARD (3.3.2) on 10.6.2 client trying to Control a 10.5.8 Mac OS X Server system. The All Computers pane Name column shows the SACSI Server-Home, Current Status is Idle, Current Application is Finder, Current User is Server Admin 1, IP Address is correct, and Mac OS Version shows 10.5.8 (9L34), and ARD version 3.3.2.
Both computers are on the same subnet. Client Norton Firewall is disabled. Both firewalls (Mac OS X Server Firewall & Norton Firewall) on server are disabled.
When running other applications on the server, such as Server Preferences, the Current Application column changes to reflect its name.
From Terminal on the client system I can ssh [email protected] (Server IP address)
    without a problem.
In ARD when I click on Control icon I get a popup titled Control Computer with a "Connecting to SACSI Server-Home" message and a Stop button. Eventually I get another popup with the message "Connection failed to SACSI Server-Home" with an OK button.
    It always fails like this.
Anybody have any idea on how to fix this?

I can agree this behavior! As I have understood it is failing because of some issues with NAT handling lacks still in the software. This is actually very old, serious and large scale problem since basically it doesn't work over any home network configuration.
I have couple use cases where this works over VPN but I would love see it working without. And of course it works in the local network. But not good enough since I mean the purpose of the ARD is to be able to connect from anywhere.
Apple claims that 3.3.2 included some improvements:
+* Improved handling of IP address and port changes for clients accessed behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) system+
I can't still connect to my server from the outside. It says always +Connection failed+ as before the upgrade! ARD probably does use ssh tunneling methods a bit differently because if I do ssh tunneling manually, no problems at all. A bit weird.
This is how to test it. Choose "encrypt passwords and keystrokes only" from security panel of the ARD Admin and create a new connection by address. Address is localhost and remote management port is 7283 and screen sharing 7900.
    Then open terminal and type:
    +ssh -L 7283:localhost:3283 -L 7900:localhost:5900 [email protected]+
Port forwarding is in the form of -L local-port:host:remote-port. You could put -f to tell ssh to go into the background just before it executes the command. This is followed by the user name and server you are logging into. Sometimes it's also useful to put -N to not execute a command on the remote system.
Until Apple do the fix or some workaround...

  • Bizarre - iMac shows cog wheel and Apple Logo, ARD shows desktop

Here's a good one for you. I have two iMacs at home. One of them, a G5 iMac (iSight), had 10.5.1, all the updates, and no external drives or other 3rd party apps to screw things up. Ok, so I did the Apple Software Update to 10.5.2 there and after going through the install process and rebooting it is currently showing me the Apple logo with the cog wheel running. Now here's where the fun starts - on my other iMac that I downloaded the Combo update to and all is running well with 10.5.2 (24" Aluminum), running ARD, I can log into my desktop of the G5 iMac which looked normal (and I started to download the Leopard Graphics update). Then, I walked into the room and did a double-take and saw what I described above, the cog wheel going and the logo - yet on ARD it's the desktop.
Anyone else experience this? Any other admins out there with ARD?
I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see this for myself. I wanted to test both types of updaters to see what I may be getting myself into at work tomorrow with everyone else's machines.

    Hi bolisaf,
I'm having that same issue. It's annoying. It's seems to take forever, and unnecessary. When the desktop cames in the dock takes long time to show, sometimes...
Can i ask you how long your boot time is?
As you did not post anythong else, did you manage to work out a solution? Or there is not a solution for this?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

  • VNC not showing up in ARD 3.0
