Running BOINC - Rosetta on an iMac G5 OS 10.4.7.
Can anyone solve the problem of running the above Application. At present I only receive 1/3 to 1/2 credit for work done. They say it is because BOINC 5.4.9 is not optimized for PPC's so the work output is much less than theoretically possible based on the speed of the processor.
BOINC would appear to be a Universal application.
You can't run Rosetta on a PowerPC Mac. Rosetta is for running PowerPC apps on Intel chips.
If the software isn't optimized for the processor you have then it will run at a lower speed. Nothing can be done about it.
kind regards

Endianness when running under Rosetta?
Hi all,
I have a Carbon application which is reading binary data from a file's resource and then has to work with that data. I know the endianness of the data on disk so I used to do a byte-swap when necessary (after using ReadPartialResource() to get the data into my variable).
I dutifully converted all those unconditional byte-swaps to CFSwapInt32BigToHost() in order to make sure that things work correctly when running on an Intel machine (since the application is not universal, the app is running under Rosetta on Intel machines).
Today I tested the application on an iMac Intel CoreDuo (in my local Apple Store) - things worked just fine. However, even the old version with unconditional byte-swapping works correctly...
Does this mean the "Host" on in Intel machine is still big endian? Anybody can corroborate this or point me to documentation of this behaviour?
Thanks,
AndreasHi,
to support the other posters intention: I would not need an emulator, if any code could be run between to processor types. If I have an emulator, it has to give a complete emulation of one processor another. If VirtualPC would have used BigEndians, no wndows would have ever started on those. So the other way round I assume that Rosetta will think Big (in Endianess).

Forcing programs to run in Rosetta?
I'm trying to install a non-universal program (Borland's JBuilder Foundation) on my Intel-Based iMac. The installation will not complete and the program will not run, generating a message in the log file to the effect that my machine configuration does not support the "Java VM for PowerPC."
I was under the impression that OS X for Intel macs included a code-translation technology ("rosetta") that would allow it to execute code compiled for the G4, albiet more slowly than native code. Is there any way to force this program to run through Rosetta?Yes, that's correct, but some Java apps that use certain Java libraries will not work because these libraries are not universal binaries and will not work via Rosetta. Any Java applications that use the JNI libs will not work unless the developer provides universal binary versions of the libraries they use. Non-Java applications will normally work through Rosetta if they are PowerPC-only. Java apps that do not rely on the JNI libs should work normally.

What won't run in Rosetta?
Hi,
What type of Apps will not run in Rosetta?
MichaelFor one, Apple's own Pro software will not run on these computers, despite the fact that they are using Final Cut Pro as a benchmark on the iMac/MacBook product pages. Final Cut Pro or Express, DVD Studio Pro, Logic, Logic Express, Aperture... you'll have to wait until the Universal Binaries come out (supposedly in March), and then you'll have to pay to "upgrade."
I can't believe they are using benchmarks from pieces of software that won't run on these machines (yet) to sell them. Someone who didn't do his research would think these machines would be great for Final Cut, only to find out they don't run them, period. -
I purchased Apple TV yesterday strictly to mirror my desktop to my TV. Now I find out my desktop is not supported? How can I mirror my iMac to my Apple TV? I am running Mountain Lion and the iMac is a 2.8 GHz with intel core 2 duo from early 2008.
Thanks for your help! You cannot officially do this Apple's way as they do not support your computer for Airplay.
There is a software solution called Airparrot that you may want to demo:

Some people are pleased with it othes not so much.

I made a bootable disc on an external hard drive, with Yosemite on it. I am running Snow Leopard on my iMac. How can I open the Yosemite disc from the desktop on my iMac? Does the external hard drive need to be connected to my iMac by firewire to do that?
kahjot wrote:
Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere? -
I currently run Windows 7 on my Imac through a Virtual Machine format with the Parallels software. I now wish to remove Windows from the VM restore the Hard Drive to a single partition then install windows 7 using bootcamp. How do I go about it
The virtual machine isn't a partition on your hard drive, it's just a file. You can delete the vm by going into Paralells preferences or just drag t to the trash. Bootcamp will partition your hard drive for a Win 7 install.

What version of windows is best to run on an Early 2008 IMac?
What version of Windows is best to run on an Early 2008 IMac? And should I use Boot Camp, Parallels, or VMWare? My IMac will be a secondary computer now that I got a new IMac. The Early 2008 IMac is an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB memory, and 2.66 ghz processor speed. It is also running OSX 10.9.5 and Boot Camp is version 5.1.2.
I mostly want to do this so I can get rid of an old Windows machine that I just use to run Quicken on. I think I need to do this since Intuit does not support online bill pay for Apple versions of Quicken.
I am average with computers so any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks
RoccoBootcamp gives you access to underlying hardware on the iMac unlike VMware or Parallels. It does require reboot. Most VM engines let you take a Bootcamp Windows and run it as VM where a reboot can be avoided. With 2GB of memory, you should be able to Windows 7, but I would not recommend W8.

How do i run windows 8 on my imac
how do i run windows 8 on my imac ?
I have several engineering programs which have bee written for windows
I have heard that boot camp does the job. Does anyone have first hand experience?Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive. -
how do you upgrade OS X 10.4.11 tiger to a higher version of operating system such as OS X 10.5.6 as have tried running the upgrade disc on imac 5,1 with intel processor but only get message saying this cannot be installed with no further explanation ?
Retail Leopard disc looks like this;
(The disc itself has the same logo). If the one you've got is grey it simply won't work.
Given the retail and second hand prices of Leopard (usually some on Amazon MP), you'll probably find it cheaper to go directly to Snow Leopard, although there could be software updates and printer driver problems that could nullify the difference. -
I have two computers - iMac and PC. What is the EARLIEST version of Acrobat I can run on each system. I am running 10.9.2 on iMac and Windows 8 on PC. Thanks.
Adobe currently supports Acrobat X and Acrobat XI for Mac and Windows platforms. More details about base system requirements can be found here: Tech specs | Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and the changes to these requirements with the product updates can be found here : Overview — Acrobat and Adobe Reader Release Notes. So the earliest version would be Acrobat X and the Latest would be Acrobat XI.
Please let us know if that answers your query.

I am running Photoshop CC 2014 on iMac OS X and have recently had to reinstall the OS following upgrade to an SSD. I cannot update Photoshop as it says it is unable to extract the downloaded files (U44M1/2010). Should I reinstall Photoshop and Bridge from scratch or is there an easier way?@@ !
Sounds like you transferred programs from another drive? This isn't a very good way to do it. Yes, re-install the Adobe apps.

I am trying to upgrade two MACs to Maverick. I have been successful with My Power Mac but unable to get my Imac to load. I am running Snow Leopard on the Imac. When I go to the App Store it shows that it has been downloaded. Any ideas? Any ideas
You stated; " I have been successful with My Power Mac "
A Power Mac is incapable of being upgraded to Mavericks. It is a PPC Mac which can only run versions of OS X up to 10.5.8 and no higher. Any version of OS X higher that 10.5.8 requires an Intel processor to run.
Does the iMac meet the hardware requirements for Mavericks?

Two Glitches found in CS3 Running in Rosetta
Using either image size or print while running in Rosetta will cause Photoshop to crash. Running Snow Leopard on Mac Pro 3.8 Quad. Neither causes a crash when not running in Rosetta. Just FYI.
Yes.... some filters that haven't been updated yet. Not a hugh problem since I don't need to run it in Rosetta very often.
