Running CAD on a mac laptop
Hello!
I am going to buy a mac laptop on which I will be running CAD. What computer do folks recommend? I would appreciate any opinions or advice!

Hi Kelly,
as Steven says it depends on how much you want to use it and, I expect, which application. I only use CAD for hobby work, but it works fine on my Macbook, very rapid, no problems, and the screen is very bright and clear. I don't know much about it but I'd guess if I did 3D work it would be slower, as the Macbook doesn't have a dedicated graphics card. The Macbook Pro and the desktops (iMac and Mac Pro) do have this, so if you are intending professional use it might be worth thinking about paying that extra. Also if you want a large screen, well that comes with the iMac or you can buy large screens for any of the laptops (and use them in clamshell mode if you want, or as extra screen space if you prefer). I believe Dell screens are very good and much cheaper than Apple's.

Now it is clear which it wasn't before! We can't see what you have done or not so a good descriptions does help when communicating.
If you have done all you say and some restarts too I would advise you to do the install of 10.6 from the installation disc. Restart the computer and then install the 10.6.6 Combo update. You just install "on top" of what you have. No archiving or formatting. -
I have an apple iphone 4 that I want to download audio books from my library onto. I cannot figure out how to do that. The iphone does not show up on my mac laptop as a connected device. Does this kind of download have to run through itunes? Thanks
Yes it is done through iTunes. The iPhone will never show up in Finder as a device. When application quits - it's all forgotten and it self-resets to
unwanted configuration.Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software. -

I see all the upgrades as additional memory or a faster process?
Is a retina screen necessary, and why flash based storage against a 1TB hard drive, and a i5 instead of an i7
The main reason for this purchase is to play live and use backing tracks and record found sounds and make creative songs.
I hope you can provide some valuable feedback, as I am a longtime MAC user and see upgrades and changes happen regularly but the most important thing is the songs not the equipment.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select Airport/Wifi & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right? -
I continue to get crashes from my Mac Laptop Maverick. I was running Snow leopard without any hassles and have now upgraded to Maverick. I get continued crashes, on start up or if I am running a program like GoPro to edit video or Firefox. What to do?

You mean you don't want to dual boot to run the program in Windows?
Have you looked in the Boot Camp forum? you can run the software already natively in Windows. Parallels just lets you run Windows under or side by side with Mac OS (sharing memory and processing resources).
Parallels of course uses the SAME Windows partition you already have (usually, unless you want to buy and install a 2nd copy of Windows and create a VM). -

The 15-inch MacBook Pro is the best computer. It has got a quad-core processor, it supports 16 GB of memory that you can install yourself without voiding warranty, two graphic cards, etc.
You can also have a look at the 13-inch MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air, but they probably won't give you the performance you really want -
Min needed to run my music lib on a Mac Laptop?
I have lost my iTunes music library (including approx 70 CDs of songs, all 65 subscribed podcasts -- worse, which episodes I have listened to and which I haven't -- as well as all my purchased music and about 35 Audiobooks) twice since I loaded iTunes 5 on my Windows XP laptop. When I looked at the Apple site, I noticed very few (if any) troubleshooting recommendations for Apple computers.
So, as a possible remedy, what is the smallest/cheapest laptop I can get that will manage/hold my music collection, Audible books, keep up with my podcasts and sync everything with my iPods?
I am not familiar with the nomenclature of Macs (iBook, Powerbook, G3, G4, etc.) so any information would be appreciated.
I would like to get out of this cheaply (read - buying less than 'state of the art'), but I don't want to 'shoot myself in the foot' when it comes to functionality (i.e. I don't have 30 minutes for the iPod to sync every day because the CPU is a dog).Any Mac with "book" in it's title - e.g. iBook, PowerBook - is a laptop. iMacs are consumer all-in-one desktop systems, and PowerMacs are tower-type desktop systems. The Mac mini is a very compact system - about the size of seven CD cases in a stack - with a separate monitor.
The smallest and cheapest laptop would the 12" iBook G4. It should be fine for your music collection and will transfer to your iPod quite speedily, particularly if you use Firewire rather than USB.
But not to talk you out of a Mac sale, but if you haven't yet tried iTunes 5.01, you might give it a whirl first. Windows systems are complex beasts with a huge number of variables so it might not help in your particular situation, but it would be worth a try before you spend the cash on a new system (unless you were thinking about a Mac laptop anyway). -
Hello everybody, Im trying to update my ITunes on my MAC (laptop) to the newer version so I can then be able to update the latest updates for my Iphone-3G. I don’t require a complete reinstall just need to be able to update my itunes.
What I have tried so far is I had my MAC search for update’s and it said that I should update to (ITunes version 10 . 6 . 3 ) So I asked it to do the update but after 2hrs of waiting for it to download/update it then puts up a message saying the following- (In order to continue installation, please close the following application: ITunes).
When I tried to do this another message comes up that says- (The update ITunes can’t be installed. The following install step failed: run preupgrade script for Apple mobile device support. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.)
I have also tried to run the update while having closed ITunes before I even start the update but the same problem happens after waiting about 2hrs.
Some one that had the same problem said this might be happening in the older operating systems. But that does not make sense because surely Apple want customers who own a MAC and i-phone to still buy from iTunes.

Sorry, thought that was the body of the question, so the title is long. When I plug in my iPhone 4 (newest update) into my Mac laptop (current version of iTunes, Snow Leopard), it does not read the music, apps, etc., or open iTunes at all. It syncs the pictures, but it doesn't not show as a USB device, either. I have gone through the Troubleshooting assistant, restarting both comp and laptop, using different USB ports, etc. If it is of note, when I look at the option to Sync through Wifi on the phone, it says that sync will happen when my computer (by name) is "available." Not sure if this is a phone issue or laptop, leaning towards laptop, since iPhoto syncs. Willing to buy Lion if that will fix the problem! I would appreciate any help that is given.

You have written a very long story, and I admit I have skipped most of it. But I think the question is you are on iOS 7, and cannot get the latest version of iTunes (11.1.5) on your computer because your OS X is too old.
The fact that you chose not to update your hardware does not mean you could not update your software!
OS X 10.5 is very old (about four years). iTunes 11.1.5 (current version) requires at least OS X 10.6.8 to run. Very likely, you could upgrade your computer's software to at least OS X 10.6.8 and then download the current iTunes on it.
You would start here:

Then you would update the OS X 10.6 to OS X 10.6.8 over the air, then download iTunes (or update to a later OS X, as the current version is 10.9.2).
