Running Celeron 1.2Ghz CPU on a MSI 6163Pro v2.0

Hi,
I've been running the following system for three years now and am planning an upgrade of the CPU:
MSI 6163-Pro v2.0 (FSB at 133mhz and AGP divider at 1/4) 3.10 bios (latest)
Slot 1 PIII 550 CPU overclocked to 733mhz (133mhz FSB) - running rock solid all this time as it has a whopping big heatsink and two big fans on it
784mb of Kingmax low profile PC133 SDRAM
GeForce 2 MX 440 v/c
Creative Soundblaster Live DE SE s/c
assorted NIC's, and other cards, hdd's, drives, etc
I have picked up a generic OEM socket 370 -> slot 1 slocket and am considering putting the fastest socket 370 CPU that I can find into it (Celeron Tualatin 1.3Ghz CPU).
The 6163Pro should accept the slocket and the slocket will handle the 1.3 GHz CPU, but I have not been able to find any information as to whether the 6163Pro will accept the tualatin 1.3Ghz CPU on the slocket?
The CPU runs at a default of 100mhz FSB. If the mobo will run it at that speed, I plan to try overclocking it back up to 133mhz FSB through using a Pep66 Alpha cooler, again using the AGP divider of 1/4.
My question is, has anyone tried running a tualatin CPU in a slocket on the MSI 6163Pro v2 before? Will it work, or is there any reason why it cannot work? Do you think that the overclock will work?
Is there anything I need to be aware of (apart from the usual - voltage, heat, voiding warranty, etc)?
Regards
Anakha

I went into my BIOS and noted the following:
CPU Plug & Play III
Award Software v3.10
CPU speed: 733mhz
CPU multiplier: 5.5
CPU/PCI Frequency: 133 / 33mhz (On)
As the PCI frequency = the AGP frequency, the BIOS would appear to have a 1/4 divider. Is this an unsupported feature?
The upgradeware slocket that I mentioned in my previous post is significantly cheaper than the Powerleap one and from reading through several threads in the http://www.overclockers.com.au Intel forum, there are many happy users of it (upgradeware).
The upgradeware website lists the MSI 6163Pro v2.0 as being compatible with the slot-t slocket, so I will buy one and some 1.3/1.g Ghz tualatin celerons and let you know how it goes (will be travelling for a while, so it will probably take me 6 wks to get back to you about it).

Will Tualatin Celeron 1.4GHz CPU be working on MSI-6337?
    ========================================
    MSI 815ept chipset mainboard
I am planning to upgarde my CPU from Celeron 850 to Tualatin Celeron 1.4GHz
    But
All I find on MSI web is "N/A" according to the link below:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=15
Does it mean 6337 is not able to make it at all, or practically Tualatin Celeron 1.4GHz CPU works fine on 6337?
Do I have to use Tualatin Celeron 1.3GHz CPU instead?
the mainboard bios is already the newest.
Oh, thanks for any tip from you.

Tualatin celeron 1.4G CPU working on MSI 815ept stuff
    So sorry to touble you.
But I have to tell you something all about
Tualatin celeron 1.4G CPU working on MSI 815ept stuff
I bought a celeron 1.4 G cpu yesterday, and put it on my motherboard(815ept),
well, When I finished formating my harddisk and began to install windows xp pro.
    windows Setup program hung.
It stopped when program say "examing hard disk...stuff".
so I replaced my hard drive by a Seagate 7200.7 80G hard disk and the same thing happened. it just hung.....
It's confusing that to setup windows 98 is alright, not a slight error is reported.
and i have to look back into
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/m...tail.php?UID=15
    with that bold blue N/A
I think Tualatin 1.3G cpu would work on my motherboard. And tomorrow, i'm gonna change for a 1.3G one.

  • Whether sis648fx can support celeron 1.8GHz CPU or not?

I've bought the MSI 648FX Neo motherboard and wondering whether the board can support Celeron 1.8 or not after flashing the ne BIOS?

This mobo can't support any Williamette based CPU, so there's no support for your Intel Celeron 1.8GHz CPU even after BIOS upgrade.
Please follow this MSI 648F NEO CPU Support Page for more details.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the CPU on an MSI GX-730 laptop?

Hi.  I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to upgrade the CPU on an MSI GX-730 Laptop with an X2 Turion CPU currently in it?  And if it's possible, what other CPUs are compatable?  I was hoping to put in a Phenom mobile processor, but I am not sure if one would work in it.  Thanks.

The short answer is no, you cannot upgrade it.
The long answer is you might be able to upgrade it to a slightly better Turion, but I'm not really sure it will provide any benefit.

  • Activity Monitor shows a process running at 180% of CPU. How can that be?

Hi. When you go to Utilities > Activity Monitor, you see a list of the processes that are running on the Mac. Sometimes there is a process that shows it is running at 180% of CPU. What does this mean exactly? It is not possible to run at 180% of the capacity of the CPU, right? Thanks

And a process that is capable of running multiple threads of execution, can concurrently use more than 1 CPU, and thus consume greater than 100% of 1 CPU.

  • Fans running full blast and CPU

    Hi,
I have a late 2003, early 2004 dual 2.0 ghz G5,1 gig ram running OS x 10.4.7. Everything has been fine up until a few weeks ago the fans started running at full speed when the system was on, no variation, just full speed. I ran the hardware test disc and I get the following error, 28 seconds into the test,----2SAM/1/3:CPU B AD 7417 AD4 post/2176/0---
I have talked to a service centre close by and they have told me that the CPU is bad and needs replacemwnt to correct the fan problem. Everything runs normally as it used to, sleep, wake, all function fine. Do I need a new CPU or is their something else causing the problem??

    Hi DS,
Thank you for your quick reply and insight.
I do not have the full version of Hardware Monitor as of yet, just ordered it tonight so will have it very soon and then will be able to have full info. The demo version gives me the following info.
    1) CPU A die temp--28.8 degrees celsius
    2) CPU B Die Temp--29.1 degrees "
    3) Drive Bay-------24.0 degrees "
    4) Main Logic Board air inlet---24.0 degrees "
    5) Main Logic Board ambient--27.6 degrees "
    6) Main logic board backside--27.0 degrees "
    7) Memory controller heatsink--31.8 degrees "
    8) Processor Card A Ambient---26.5 degrees "
    9) Processor Card B Ambient---26.0 Degrees "
    10) Smart Disc Temp----26.0 degrees"
This is after the system has been running for the better part of an hour with the room temp. at 65 degrees Fahenheight. Programs running at the same time that these temperatures where taken are as follows-- Quark express, Garage Band, Aperature, MS word, Illustrator 10,Firefox, Filemaker Pro. With all those programs running activity monitor for CPU reads as follows--
    % user--3.5
    % system--2.0
    % nice--O
    % idle---94.5
System memory shows as having 330 mb free at the same time
Fan speed is a constant " turbo" sound, no variation in speed or sound, very loud.
It would seem that as you have suggested that I am getting a false reading from the Apple Hardware test as all readings seem to OK.What do you suggest that I try to do to bring the fan speed down to a normal level? It would seem that the dual CPU's are OK and that something else is causing the problem?? Would you agree? Appreciate any help that you can suggest.
    Thanks Much
Machine is a 2.0 ghz ,dual processor G5, I gig memory, ATI video, model #-M9032ll/A, late 2003, early 2004 production.

  • MSI 6163Pro & AGP support

    Hi,
    I've got one simple question
Can my MSI 6163Pro support newest AGP cards (Radeon 9000, Ti 4200). I've heard that knew AGP cards have (1,5V) but my MSI 6163Pro support 3,3V.
Please let me know if someone knew  )
    Pit

A GF2 or GF3 Ti200 are the most likely to work because of the lower power requierments, but with a good power supply and system cooling any of the mentioned cards should work.
A 128MB card is likely to conflict with the bios so a 64MB card is the best candident for upgrading.

  • Macbook Pro early 2008 won't go over 1.2GHz CPU speed!!! Help!!!

So I still have this thing and I install coolbook on it to see the cpu clockspeeds. It says 1200MHz even on full cpu load and 800MHz on no load. Then I opened the windows in bootcamp, and guess what task manager and cpu-z along with coretemp also reported it runs at 1200MHz or 1.2GHz on full load!! What's wrong? Help!

Since no one else is answering, I’ll jump in.
Your story is interesting indeed.  I’m not sure I can help you fix the Mac but it sounds like there is a reasonable chance of recovering the data.
I assume it came with installation disks.  Will it boot from them?  If so run Disk Utility from there and try to repair the system disk.
For the hardware problems on your Mac it is time to take it to Genius Bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
It could be your disk failing but it sounds more like flakey electronics in the system.  Let’s assume is is the system board until a Genius tells you otherwise.  If so, you can simply put the working system disk in an external enclosure, mount that on your other Mac and copy the data.  Here is a source for the inexpensive hardware you would need:
    Toolkit: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLKITMHD/
    SATA enclosure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2W/
There are multiple directions to go from here.  Let me know what happens when you try theses first options.

  • Various advice needed to overclock cpu using my MSI k8n platinum sli

Hey guys, i recently overclocked my amd 64 3500 cpu to 2.4ghz (from 2.2ghz) i was wondering if any could tell me how high i can get this cpu up to using the msi k8n platinum sli mobo.
At the moment the cpu's temp goes to 40-45 oC.
If i can overclock the cpu some more, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to overclock it as i'm computer newbie.
i'm using the standard amd heatsink and fan so i know that will comprimise the potentail of the cpu's overclocking capability, as i heard that some people managed to get their cpu up to 3.ghz with a high quality fan, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how high i can get my cpu frequency with a standard fan as i really don't want to risk damaging the cpu if i go overboard.
    Thnx in advance.

  • MSI KT8 Neo2 F board, upgraded cpu and used MSIs Live Update, now unstable BSODs

I've had this mobo for almost 2 yrs now with an AMD 3500+ cpu and recently upgraded that to the FX-55. To do that, it required using MSIs Live Update and needed newer chipset drivers. It has the latest bios according to Live Update.
It took a few attempts but finally booted w/o BSODs and has been running for over 1 week BUT is still not right. It's sometimes unstable and will crash (BSOD) just by starting up a browser. I had the bios settings at "optimized" and have tryed a few other changes but so far, I'm not gaining. Last night I couldn't keep it running more than a few minutes w/o it crashing.
I have the MSI manual for my board and plan to spend some more time playing with it tonight but might anyone here have any ideas? It's not running hot (reads 50C) and was stable before with the 3500+. I've tryed "Fail Safe" bios settings too but nothing's better that way either.
I'm hoping that someone here has a few ideas?
    Perhaps related?
After initially running this with the new cpu, I'd see the "searching for MAC address" message and it'd hang there on boot. Someone told me that was because it was trying to do a network boot, selected in the boot sequence SO I've unselected that and that's when things got worse (oddly as it shouldn't IMO). One can select the 3+ boot devices (floppy, USB, CD-DVD rom, HDD) and it use to see the HDDs (2) before but now I'm not (only floppy and CD-DVD rom) and if I unselect the ethernet option (boot other devices), it fails to boot at all and says "insert floppy" as if I was installing Win98 way back when (running XP Pro btw). Something's definately not right with my bios selections.

Let's go back to basics here for a bit. Start by posting your complete specs in your signature like we do. Make sure that your PSU values are also in there.
Let's also look at some tests to help determine where the issue is. I would recommend Memtest86+, OCCT, Prime95, and 3DMarks as a great first series. Also get CPUz and lets see what it shows for CPU and Memory.
If we can get an idea where things begin to fall apart then maybe we can determine if this is driver, hardware or some other issue without having to make the flash happen first. The reason why I am avoiding the flash at this point is that if things are mostly working maybe there is some other cause than Bios. We know that some FX's work with 3.x and some that don't. So I would like to try a bit of checking before we dive into a flash that could cause more issues than it solves if we get this wrong. As things are mostly working now we can assume at least for the moment that maybe the flash is not needed. If we don't see anything during testing that sheds some light then maybe we go ahead with the flash.
That is if your willing to take some time to try and sort this out and maybe learn some stuff in the process. It is of course your call and we will respect whichever decission you make here.

  • Reader X doesn't run fully, uses 25% CPU and hangs

Whenever I click on a pdf, the Reader starts but it's running fully. It draws the toolbars but not the body. The background is still whatever app is behind it. CPU is about 25% and the Reader is not responding. It hangs. Another pdf reader from another vendor works fine. I installed the latest version.
    Using Windows 7 64 bit with SP1.

I have had issues with Adobe Reader X hanging (not responding) due to a conflict between an antivirus program and the Adobe Reader X Protected Mode/Protected Viewer sandbox features.
Adobe has a recent(2012-01-09)KB article http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/860/cpsid_86063.html entitled "Protected Mode troubleshooting". There is a similar article (2011-09-12) http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/901/cpsid_90161.html entitled Protected View troubleshooting.
khwajakhurram replied to my query suggesting unchecking the default Adobe Reader X Preferences >3D & Multimedia> "Enable hardware rendering for legacy video cards" setting and this solves the issues!
What is surprising is that Adobe Reader X's 3D & Multimedia settings report that the alternative preferred renderer modes are either software or DirectX9 .....on a Vista machine with DirectX11.
The video card on this machine is definitely not legacy but a recent quality Nvidia produced card. That is also the case on the other machines with the issue I have reported.
I went a step further and I have found that performance is vastly improved by changing from the default preferred renderer mode of DirectX9 to the alternative Software setting.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/860/cpsid_86063.html mentions that "certain configurations of anti-virus software that have not yet white-listed AcroRd32.exe" are "Unsupported configurations for Reader running in Protected Mode". Therefore I have also excluded AcroRd32.exe from virus scanning.
I am now able to use both Adobe Reader X's Protected Mode and Advanced Security without issue and performance is vastly improved. I am certain that your issues will also be improved.

  • MobileDeviceHelper running @ 100% on one CPU Core

Hi, anyone suggest anything to fix one of my CPU cores runs MobileDeviceHelper (32Bit) at 100% consistently after iTunes is started.
The machine is a new build with Windows 8 64bit all updates and patches applied. All latest manufacturer chipset and other relevant drivers and every other part of the machine works perfectly. If I end the process, distnoted (32 bit) then replaces it and takes over with another core running at 100%. Ending that process and mobiledevicehelper comes back at one core 100% usage, then ending that and it behaves.
I have tried restarting the machine, installing updates, disabling the task in task manager, resetting the network adapter (winsock reset) and disabling ApplePush, and itunes helper at startup but am out of ideas now! I haven't even sync'd my phone to it yet.
Im fast thinking iTunes seems to be getting more buggy each release (I haven't been able to burn an audio cd on the new machine as it crashes while attempting to, but other software can burn the same playlist and file after dragging out of the iTunes playlist) yet iTunes on my Macbook runs fine!

oh and its iTunes 12.1.1.4 64Bit with Windows 8.1 Pro 64Bit all latest updates.
As a workaround I have found the two files, renamed them so iTunes cant call them and everything still works fine which begs the questions what are they doing that uses 100% of one CPU core! I haven't setup my iPhone as a remote, or my AppleTVs yet, hoping they don't rely on these services!

  • Mail running +100% of my CPU!

Every since I installed Snow Leopard and then Lion on Sunday, Mail has been taking up over 100% of my CPU.  Even when I go offline, when I turn off my wireless, it runs over 100% of my CPU.
I run a lot of RSS feeds through Mail - a couple hundred.  I like seeing web posts as I see mail - to have everything in one stream.  This was never a problem before I installed Snow Leopard and Lion - Mail was fast before.  Now when I open "Activity" it seems to check feeds much slower than before.
I turned off all sharing, no MobileMe.  It's making me feel like I'm working underwater, everything is sluggish and slow, mail is constantly not responding, and I get the spinning wheel all the time.  Why is this happening?
For what it's worth - Address Book is incredibly slow as well.

That's my CPU and ram use with itunes running a live even, mail open and safari for right you, also i have opeb twitter, skype, ichat and activity monitor and connect a external drive..
