Running Classic applications in Mavericks

Hello.  Is there a way to run Classic (MacOS 7) applications in Mavericks?

I haven't tried them in OSX 10.9.x, but...

  • Running "Classic Application" in Mac OS X v10.6.2 Snow Leopard

Hello, I'm trying to run a Classic Application on Mac OS X v10.6.2 Snow Leopard... goes by the name of "Titanic Adventure Out of Time." When I go to install it I get the message "You can't open the application Titanic because the Classic environment is no longer supported." I'm wondering how I will be able to get this to work on my MacBook. I've read a few sites which talk of some sort of emulator, or mounting it with Roxio Toast? Is this correct?

Believe it or not you may have an easier time running that program in Windows on your Mac! That game was made for Windows, and there is better old Windows support for Intel Macs than there is Mac OS 9 support. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
    And see http://www.macmaps.com/macgamepages.html
to see if there are any patches to make it Mac OS X Intel compatible.

  • Running classic on Mac OS X Intel Mac

I have a brand new MacBook, running OS 10.4.9.
I have some older programs that need to be ran through classic.
I know that you can't use classic on Intel systems, and that you need SheepShaver to use it. I need a place to download an old version of Mac OS, one that would allow me to use the classic environment. Of course, I want legal solutions only =P I heard that Mac OS 7.x something was legal for download, but where can I find it, and will it allow me to run classic applications?

I rember signing a petition online somewhere to have Apple release OS to the masses for free (since 7.55 is available). Alas, I don't know what ever came of that...
But in regards to your delema, the only way to obtain a classic version that would work is to purchase it. There's a great company here in the bay area called Mac-Pro. And they have a great staff and great prices on a lot of different items. Or there's also the ever classic eBay.
More likely than not, the applications that you have will need at least Mac OS 8.6, but 9.2 is going to be your best bet.
    Hope this helps.

  • Powerpc applications on mavericks

is there a way to run powerpc applications on mavericks 10.9 ?
i cannot run SimCity 4 deluxe on my mac. I get a message says PowerPc app. are not supported.

Contact SimCity Support and see when they will make an update to there software this is  not unusual when installing a (NEW OPERATING SYSTEM). This is not the fault of Mavericks, there is not a lot you can do until the developers make a fix to SimCity.

  • Help! Why do my Classic applications refuse to run?

I don't know if this is the best forum for this problem but hopefully someone here will either be able to help me or tell me where I can look for help. I have been using Classic mode with my G5 to run Microsoft FrontPage, which I use for my website. For the last 8 months everything worked fine, but recently I have encountered some problems that I don't know how to deal with. When I try to launch Frontpage Explorer I get the message "server timed out". If I try to go straight to Editor I can open individual pages, but when I try to save the page I get the message "out of memory". At that point I not only have to save the page without changes, but the page is then erased!
I have tried the following. First I removed the OS9 system folder from the G5. Then I removed the FrontPage application. I shut down the computer and after restarting I reinstalled the OS9 folder and the FrontPage app. However, the results are identical. Fortunately I have the web pages backed up in several locations so I have not yet lost any data, but I am no longer able to update my website, which is a critical part of my business.
Does anyone have any ideas for anyting else I can try? Could this be some sort of virus? Everything else seems to work fine, only my Classic application has been affected.
    G5 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Another "symptom" to report. I decided to use my old G3 that also has Frontpage installed to update my site. But I got the exact same error messages! I even booted the G3 in OS9, but still was unable to launch Frontpage; or to be more accurate I was unable to get Frontpage to open up my web pages.
I thought that perhaps the number of webpages I had stored was too much for Frontpage to handle, so I moved ~90% of the pages to a separate folder and then put the folder in a different hard drive. No luck, same results.
I did try rebuilding the desktop on both the G3 and G5, but it made no difference. Any suggestions will be very gratefully accepted!

I have an early 2011 macbook pro 13" running 10.6.8, if i upgrade to osx mavericks 10.9.1 will I still be able to run powerpc applications?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the last Mac OS X version that supports PowerPC applications, so if you upgrade to OS X Mavericks, you will lose the ability to use PowerPC applications.
I recommend you to look for upgrades to those apps, but if you cannot or any of your apps are not available for Intel-based Macs, a different option you have is to create a second partition and install OS X Mavericks there, so you can still use your old apps by starting up into Snow Leopard. To create the partition > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html

  • An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running the application again

I Have erased the hard drive of my MBP in order to perform a clean reinstall of OS X Mavericks, according to these instructions.
When I tried to reinstall, my internet connection stopped (was broadcasting via another MBP and the cable from that one got disconnected), so I restarted the erased MBP to try again. Holding command+R, it booted in internet recovery (as the recovery partition was erased along with the rest of the hard drive), but could not connect over the broadcasted WiFi, so I created a bootable USB flash drive according to these instructions on the other MBP.
This installation went smooth without any hiccups, but due to an oversight I had to do it again the next day.
I took the same steps, with the same bootable drive (I did not create a new one the first time) but this time I couldn’t get through the prepare to install phase. At the end, where the “about a second remaining” message stays for about 20 minutes, I get the “An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running the application again” message. When I quit the installer (only option at that stage) and return to Disk Utility, the internal drive on which I tried to do the installation is not visible anymore.
I tried this (after a reboot every time) with a new bootable usb drive with the same download of the OS X Mavericks installer and with a new one, each ending with the same error. The installer was downloaded on an MBP on which Mavericks is also installed, with the same Apple ID. The App Store did not allow me to change Apple ID for the Mavericks download. Can this pose a problem? It did work the first time, though.
Note that this error occurs at a different stage than the one with the same message due to the wrong date (this discussion amongst others). I also checked the date in terminal and this appears to be correct, when I consider the timezone.
Here are a few lines from the installer log (omitted similar lines and lines that could contain personal information). The most important line is the last one, indicating the error.

    Jun 22 02:45:55 localhost Install OS X Mavericks[423]: Got error in writing to /Volumes/schijf/OS X Install Data/minstallconfig.xml
That last line indicates the error that occurred. (The internal drive on which I try to install Mavericks is called “schijf”, it also already has been called Macintosh HD, with no effect. This time I tried another name during the reformat to see if and when the installer renames the disk. Does it do this, or should I call the disk “Macintosh HD” myself?)
By now I also got past the internet recovery issues, being able to get the progress bar under the spinning globe and the option to install Lion (not Mavericks, but I suppose that’s because the MBP shipped with Lion). When I choose this option, the installer first spends a few hours downloading additional components. This eventually took less time than first indicated, but still about 4-5 hours. After this, the installation of about 24 minutes starts, but this takes much longer than the indicated 24 minutes, each minute taking about 15 minutes. When it was less than a minute, the internet connection got disconnected (but I don’t suppose it still needed an internet connection at this stage, having downloaded all additional components) and now the “Less than a minute” message has been there the whole night (about 9,5 hours), the last 9 hours with a spinning beachball on the screen after I accidentally clicked somewhere on the screen (nowhere in particular, he shouldn’t do something because of the click. After unplugging the power adapter, the battery icon on the screen wasn’t updated, and the WiFi icon simply disappeared, instead of showing no bars like it should when there’s no connection).
Does Anyone know how I can fix the error, because I would prefer installing with a bootable drive. Is it worth it to continue waiting on the current, apparently stuck Lion installer to finish or should I force a reboot?
Can I try using the Recovery Disk assistant (OS X Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0) to create a recovery disk with the other MBP? I think not, as this might cause trouble with 2 different MBP's using the same license.
    Thanks in advance!

Since this thread seems to be gaining more speed than the other one i'm working on, i figured i'd add these images to help you all out detailing the exact problem.
I'm having the same issue and I wanted to provide some info specific to my mac, and some info in general to help with diganosis.
    First, my specs
Secondly, I am running an aftermarket 500 GB drive.
Third, not sure if this is realated, but this screen suggests the proress will take 3 minutes, then it abruptly umps to the restart phase after about 1.5 - 2.5 minutes.
And finally, here is the seeminly unavoidable error message.
Also, other things I've tried now are
installing it from the "show package contents area",
mounting said DMG and trying to install from there.
installing a package file called "upgradeos.pkg"
    no luck.

  • Will After Effects 5.5 run on OS X Mavericks?

I have the OS X Mavericks GM (that was released late last week to us Devs), and I was wondering if I was able to run AE 5.5 on the new OS.
My work requires 5.5, but I would like to install the OS. In doing so, will it break AE?

We have just released a fix for the After Effects CC (12.0) crash on Mac OS X v10.9 (Mavericks):
    http://adobe.ly/AE_CC_1201_Mavericks
IMPORTANT: The After Effects CC (12.0.1) update fixes a crash on Mac OS X (v10.9). There is no need to install this update on any other operating system. After Effects CC (12.1) is coming soon for all operating systems and includes this same fix plus many more features and bug fixes.
Be sure that you are signed in and have activated the software—i.e., ensure that you are not running After Effects in free trial mode. The update will not work if you are running the application in trial mode.
This update is only available as a manual download (not through the Creative Cloud automatic update mechanism) to prevent users on versions of Mac OS X other than v10.9 (Mavericks) from installing it unnecessarily.
Adobe After Effects CS6 (11.0.3) was released a little while ago with this fix, plus fixes for many other crashes and bugs. Details: http://adobe.ly/AE_CS6_1103

  • Throttle bandwidth per application in Mavericks

Hello. Is there a way of limiting bandwidth use per application in Mavericks? I use both wifi and a 3G stick to connect to the internet, depending on where I am. I would like to be able to limit the bandwidth for Skype and FaceTime when running on 3G so that video calls don't eat away my data plan. I sometimes need to make video calls with Skype or FaceTime, but I don't need a full HD resolution. A lower image quality would be perfectly fine, as long as the sound remains clear. So I'm looking for a front end application or Terminal command that would allow me to cap bandwidth for  specific applications. I tried NoobProof, WaterRoof, PFlists and Entonnoir, but they have not been updated to 10.9 and LittleSnitch either allows or denies connections, intead of limiting bandwidth. I'd be grateful if you have any suggestions that could solve my problem. Thanks a lot!

You can use Ice Floor firewall and limit an outgoing port. That's as close as I've come to solving this issue. Since Skype and FaceTime use unique ports this would work in your situation.

  • Trimming OS9 to minimum and still run Classic + 10.3.9?

    Hello all,
I've read many topics concerning deleting OS9 completely but have had difficulty finding info concerning what actually can be deleted from the OS9 system folder and OS9 applications folder and still be able to run Classic. I have an older version of Adobe Photoshop that I need to run (5.0) and a few games still that I wish to be able to run.
What exactly can be deleted and still safely run Classic?
I know that OS9 takes up a small amount of space but running 10.3.9 on my old iMac G3 350 with only a 7GB HD is at the minimum so I thought trimming OS9 might help some. Or should I just leave well enough alone?
Any thoughts and tips very much appreciated,

Your profile is a bit confusing, Can you list in your profile the computer(s) you have, including the one about which you are posting?
    Dear Corneluis.... i have :
    1) An Old G4 (Power Pc coming with MacOSX10.2 Original CD).
    2) An Original Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger DVD that i bought after.
    3) My Current iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (with the Original Mac OSX 10.5.x Tiger DVD coming with), and i am running now OSX 10.5.3
i really need to run the Classic over My iMac for many reasons ... So, i am asking if i can install the Tiger on my iMac (or in any external or internal linked HD) in order to Run Classic Via Tiger ...
You cannot run OS 9 or the Classic environment on an Intel based Mac. You need a PowerPC Mac, either G3, G4 or G5 or some earlier Macs.
Is it really impossible to Run Tiger on My iMac in any any way???? Using internal or external linked HD ??
    Using any other Way??
    Thanks

  • Running Classic apps on newer systems

Since Classic Environment no longer works with Intel processors and newer OS X versions, what would be the best way to run an OS 9 application on a newer system? Are there emulators out there that would work well?

I don't know of any way to run Classic on an Intel Mac. You could probably pick up a PowerPC Mac for not too much money and use it.
