Running classic apps in 8600 under OSX 10.3 ?

Hi all
Not sure if the subject question is right but here goes. I have all my graphic apps and plenty of third party plugins running fine under OS 9.2 in my PM8600/300. Before I loose my apps and settings, is it possible to install OSX 10.3.9 in my 8600 without loosing and/or moving any of my apps, plugins & settings around?
I thought I'd ask before actually doing the install process.
Thanks
web dude

You won't like the performance, because the 8600 has a very slow 50 MHz system bus speed. Even a G3 processor upgrade card won't change the nature of the beast. Software developers really optimize their product to run efficiently on the current hardware's capabilities, so there's a reason why installation on older computers isn't recommended or supported. If you merely want to see how slow/bad it really is, you could go for it. I'd recommend saving your $$ and not bother maxing out the memory, because it's the remaining hardware limitations of the motherboard that will create a persistent bottleneck, affecting overall performance.

  • How to run classic apps on a Macbook

I do not know where to post this, so excuse me if this is OT. But I ran into this page
    http://www.applelinks.com/index.php/more/sheepshaver23_enables_you_to_run_classic_macos_programs_onmacintels/
I suppose this is a shareware app (not a commercial app) that allows one to run PPC apps and 68K apps on a Intel Mac. Is this correct? If it is, does one need a ROM image? If so I am out of luck as all my PPC native Macs
(well with the exception to my ibook G4) have been given away (could not get a penny out of the Performa's).
Also can I run this app on my ibook? I have a old game created in 1989 that for whatever reason cannot run in classic mode (the game ran fine in my Performa 6360 under 9.1). I have tried to get the developer to create an upgrade, but he refuses, and the company that owns the copyright to the game is out of the Mac business, and besides they would not be too happy about him updating the game to run under OSX. So it looks like since I lack a native OS 9 Mac, I am out of luck.

This is an open-source project. You can get more information here:

You do need a ROM image to make this work.

  • Classic Apps Disabling Monitors Under Mac OS X?

I'm running into an annoying display issue with some of my Classic applications when running them under Mac OS X. Somehow, these apps are able to break Mac OS X's ability to access certain displays the next time I boot up the machine.
The only way to restore access to my displays is to first boot into Open Firmware using the "Command-Option-P-R" key combination, followed by going to the terminal and entering ' sudo nvram boot-args="romndrv=1" ', and then rebooting a second time.
What's disturbing me about this issue, is that it seems like Classic apps still have the ability to alter system level settings when running under a parent OS. This seems like a huge security risk to me.
    Any thoughts?
My setup is a Power Macintosh G4/400MHz AGP with an OEM ATI card and an IXMicro twin turbo card, running Mac OS 10.3.9.

Hi! You may like to check that Open Transport TCP/IP extensions in the System Folder have not been disabled or moved. While Mac OS X does provide network services to Classic, Mac OS 9 running within needs to have the Open Transport extensions in order for networking to work in Classic.
Another thing you may want to try is to set up a new location and reconfigure your network details in the Network system preferences. Classic should pick up the changes and run with it, so to speak. If the change jogs Classic into working, you can kill the old location that you used previously.

  • Running Classic Apps on Intel Mac

Hi, I'm looking for a free and legal way to install and use classic apps. I don't have an "old" mac that runs classic, so I need an emulator or an app that can open these apps. Does anyone know any solutions?

Old Macs that run Mac OS 9 are quite cheap these days, and much more legal to obtain. See my FAQ*:

  • Running Classic Apps

    Hi all...
Anyone advise me : how can i run my old OS9-applications from my iMac-intel based running 10.5???
please help me in few and clear words so i reach the stuff without reading a lot of webpages or help-articles....
    Many thanks....

Your profile is a bit confusing, Can you list in your profile the computer(s) you have, including the one about which you are posting?
    Dear Corneluis.... i have :
    1) An Old G4 (Power Pc coming with MacOSX10.2 Original CD).
    2) An Original Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger DVD that i bought after.
    3) My Current iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (with the Original Mac OSX 10.5.x Tiger DVD coming with), and i am running now OSX 10.5.3
i really need to run the Classic over My iMac for many reasons ... So, i am asking if i can install the Tiger on my iMac (or in any external or internal linked HD) in order to Run Classic Via Tiger ...
You cannot run OS 9 or the Classic environment on an Intel based Mac. You need a PowerPC Mac, either G3, G4 or G5 or some earlier Macs.
Is it really impossible to Run Tiger on My iMac in any any way???? Using internal or external linked HD ??
    Using any other Way??
    Thanks

  • Running Classic apps on newer systems

Since Classic Environment no longer works with Intel processors and newer OS X versions, what would be the best way to run an OS 9 application on a newer system? Are there emulators out there that would work well?

I don't know of any way to run Classic on an Intel Mac. You could probably pick up a PowerPC Mac for not too much money and use it.

  • Running Classic - depends on OS or on computer?

I'm a little unclear on this, so I hope you can help.
I have an iMac G5 (PowerPC, not Intel) purchased in 2004. My OS is 10.3.9. I can run Classic apps on it.
Soon I will be upgrading to Leopard.
It was my understanding that Classic support was gone for the more recent crop of Apple computers (MacBook, MacBook Pro, Intel-based iMacs, etc.) Since my computer is rather old (as far as computers go), I thought I would still be able to run Classic even after upgrading to Leopard. But someone told me that Leopard has no Classic environment. Is this true -- that ANY computer running Leopard is Classic-free?

Allan, you must have been reading my mind. I just posted my question about tweaks; and lo and behold, there was your answer.
Good advice. I'm perfectly happy to run everything in OS X, so Classic is not important to me. But it's good to be forewarned. I occasionally work with some files in a couple of pre-OS X versions of software. Now that I know about Classic's status in Leopard, I've exported these files to formats that will open in OS X or that can be imported into an OS X version of their original program.

  • Cursor disappears while running Classic

We have one machine running Tiger and two still on Panther that have disappearing cursors when they run Classic apps, specifically QuarkXpress.
I saw several posts on this problem but didn't see any answers. Does anyone have one?

This sounds like an old problem, fixed a while ago, by nVidia.
Visit the nVidia web site and download the latest drivers for your video card.  Hopefully it's modern enough that they'll have new drivers for it that will solve your problem.

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it.

  • OSX 10.4.11 won't run Classic

I'm not the most computer-literate person, so this is probably a silly question. I have a Powerbook G4 that just crashed with all of my hard drive contents on it, so I had a new drive installed and my OS re-installed along with it. When I brought it back home and updated everything, I tried running a program that uses Classic with no success. When I tried to turn Classic on manually, I got a message saying that I don't have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. I never installed OS 9 to begin with (I assume it came with Tiger when I purchased it?), but I would like to be able to run Classic for certain things. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful. It's probably a quick fix, but I don't want to mess any settings up.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
pre-Gigabit ethernet Powerbook G4s came with 9.1 on their restore CDs, and could also take 9.2.1 retail. They can both boot Mac OS 9 and use Classic.
Their USB ports are behind a back flap between the hinges.
Gigabit ethernet Powerbook G4s came with 9.2.1 and could only use the software/restore CD to install Mac OS 9. They can both boot Mac OS and use Classic. Their USB ports are behind a back flap between the hinges. While booted into Mac OS 9, they could be upgraded to 9.2.2 for best Classic compatibility.
DVI Powerbook G4s are like the Gigabit Powerbook G4s, except the fact they already came with 9.2.2. 867 Mhz and faster versions of these can both use 10.5 and boot into Mac OS 9. Once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5, they can't use Classic except on a second Firewire hard drive or partition with 10.4.11 and earlier loaded.
Powerbook G4s starting with the 12" and 17" 2003 Powerbook G4s, and later the September 2003 Powerbook G4, will not boot into Mac OS 9, and can only use Classic. These had USB ports on the left and/or right hand side of the keyboard. Once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5, they can't use Classic except on a second Firewire hard drive or partition with 10.4.11 and earlier loaded.
To tell if at bare minimum Classic is installed, notice if there is a System Folder with the Control Panels in its contents. If it is, and you can't locate it in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic that System Folder may need to be blessed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929
If your Mac should be able to boot Mac OS 9, but won't after Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk loads the Mac OS 9 system folder and you hit restart, you may need to backup your data at least twice, and reformat to include the Mac OS 9 drivers:

  • Mail 1.3.1 under OSX 10.4.3?

After six weeks of trying to live with it, I'm still finding Mail 2.0.5's user interface considerably less configurable and more annoying than Mail 1.3.1. I'd like to go back to Mail 1.3.1, which I found in my "Previous System Folder".
However, double-clicking Mail 1.3.1 produces no result. The application doesn't launch. Showing package contents, navigating to
Mail --> Package Contents --> Contents --> MacOS --> Mail and double-clicking Mail brings up a Terminal window that gives me the following:
    % /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail; exit
    dyld: Symbol not found: _DeleteSeenPOPMessagesCompleted
    Referenced from: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
    Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Message.framework/Versions/B/Message
    Trace/BPT trap
    logout
    [Process completed]
In contrast to this, when I navigate to the same place starting from OSX 10.4.3's Mail 2.0.5 (Mail --> Package Contents --> Contents --> MacOS --> Mail) and double-clicking Mail launches Mail 2.0.5 immediately and produces a Terminal window that says the following:
    % /Applications/Mail/Mail\ copy.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail; exit
Is there something I can add, subtract, modify or tweak to allow the older version of Mail to launch and run under OSX 10.4.3?
    Thanks in advance...
    PB-15" G4/1.5, G4-867 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It's not the new look I dislike (much), and I do not need assistance managing my mail.
What's bugging me is the grossly reduced functionality. I can't choose whether the mailboxes are to be on the left or the right; Apple has decided I didn't really want them on the right, even though I foolishly thought I did. I can't reliably selectively delete text by highlighting and hitting [delete]; Apple has decided that when I do that, I really mean to delete the entire line of text and not just the selected words. I can't start with a narrow search (only in a particular box, only in a particular part of the message, for instance) and widen it as needed; Apple has decided I always want to start with the widest possible search and narrow from there. Very, very obnoxious: I'm smart enough to have a good enough job to be able to afford several recent-model Macs, but Apple feels the need to treat me like a six-year-old and not trust me with the ability to make my own decisions about how my own machine should work. I cannot find a single, solitary thing that's better or easier about Mail 2.0.5 than in Mail 1.3.1.

  • Tiger / Classic app icon wont change

I can normally use get info to select an icon and paste a new one to an app or folder.
I have a classic os9 app that wont let me select the icon in the get info, permissions are fine.
    How can I force this?

I figured it out. there are some invisible files that hold this info in os9
I was copying the app from a unit running os9 and another running classic.
Only the app was copied so it did not carry over the resource.
When I copied the folder from os9 to the other unit then the invisible files carried over.
I noted the files with a usb disc formated in osx copy as unix and show the invisible files, while with a os9 formated usb disc they copy properly
