Running Classic on my Powerbook?

I have the 17" powerbook, but I don't see where I have an option of running classic? Can anyone help me in getting classic installed?
Thanks

The installation disks that came with your PB should have Classic on it. You have to install it separately from OS 10+; it doesn't install automatically with OS 10+. At least that's the way it is with my PB's Panther installation disks. Not sure about that, though, if your PB came with a Tiger installation disk. It might not have Classic on it.
If you don't see "Classic" under the System heading in System Preferences, than you likely cannot use Classic with your OS. If "Classic" is listed, there, than it should be on your installation disk.

  • Want to run classic OS9 on a 17inch Powerbook. Mac OS 9.2.2 & 10.3 DVD

    Hello
Can anyone tell me where to get a copy of the Mac OS 9.2.2 & 10.3 DVD, to install on a Powerbook G4 17 inch, which is already running 10.4.8
I want to be able to run OS9 classic.
    G4 Powerbook 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

you should be able to copy functional 9.2.2 System Folder from another Mac and then just select it in Classic preferences in OS 10.4.8 to run it.

I have a PowerBook 145B but something is wrong with the systemfolder so it wont boot. I've downloaded System 7.0.1 from Apple and put it on Floppys with my Macintosh Classic. The PowerBook boots from the floppy but after a minute it just comes up a window thats completely white.
I've tried a lot of things, but my Macintosh classic (with original floppys) runs 7.0.0. And the PowerBook needs atleast 7.0.1 and did run 7.1.0 as original OS.
    How do I fix this?

Because your PowerBook 145B shipped with OS 7.1, it can't run an earlier version of the Mac OS, such as 7.0.1.  Unfortunately, Apple never made OS 7.1 available for download.  You can run OS 7.5.1, 7.5.3, and 7.5.5 on your PowerBook, but I'd recommend doing so with the maximum amount of supported memory - 8 MBs.  The 19-part download of OS 7.5.3 is segmented, so that each one will fit on a 1.44 MB floppy disk.  The problem is that the 19-diskette set isn't an installer set as such, having no bootable disk.  It's solely intended to be used to transfer the individual segments to the resident hard drive in the computer.  Once that's done, double-clicking the first .smi segment creates the OS 7.5.3 installer disk image on the desktop, which you drag onto the hard drive icon.  This produces a folder with the OS 7.5.3 installer in it.  I've done this before with an old Mac LC and it works.  You can also download the 3-diskette OS 7.5.5 Update and run that.  These downloads can be found on the same page where you found the OS 7.0.1 download: Older Software Downloads.

  • OSX 10.4.11 won't run Classic

I'm not the most computer-literate person, so this is probably a silly question. I have a Powerbook G4 that just crashed with all of my hard drive contents on it, so I had a new drive installed and my OS re-installed along with it. When I brought it back home and updated everything, I tried running a program that uses Classic with no success. When I tried to turn Classic on manually, I got a message saying that I don't have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. I never installed OS 9 to begin with (I assume it came with Tiger when I purchased it?), but I would like to be able to run Classic for certain things. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful. It's probably a quick fix, but I don't want to mess any settings up.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
pre-Gigabit ethernet Powerbook G4s came with 9.1 on their restore CDs, and could also take 9.2.1 retail. They can both boot Mac OS 9 and use Classic.
Their USB ports are behind a back flap between the hinges.
Gigabit ethernet Powerbook G4s came with 9.2.1 and could only use the software/restore CD to install Mac OS 9. They can both boot Mac OS and use Classic. Their USB ports are behind a back flap between the hinges. While booted into Mac OS 9, they could be upgraded to 9.2.2 for best Classic compatibility.
DVI Powerbook G4s are like the Gigabit Powerbook G4s, except the fact they already came with 9.2.2. 867 Mhz and faster versions of these can both use 10.5 and boot into Mac OS 9. Once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5, they can't use Classic except on a second Firewire hard drive or partition with 10.4.11 and earlier loaded.
Powerbook G4s starting with the 12" and 17" 2003 Powerbook G4s, and later the September 2003 Powerbook G4, will not boot into Mac OS 9, and can only use Classic. These had USB ports on the left and/or right hand side of the keyboard. Once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5, they can't use Classic except on a second Firewire hard drive or partition with 10.4.11 and earlier loaded.
To tell if at bare minimum Classic is installed, notice if there is a System Folder with the Control Panels in its contents. If it is, and you can't locate it in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic that System Folder may need to be blessed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929
If your Mac should be able to boot Mac OS 9, but won't after Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk loads the Mac OS 9 system folder and you hit restart, you may need to backup your data at least twice, and reformat to include the Mac OS 9 drivers:

  • Running classic on OS 10.4

I am in the process of purchasing a PowerBook with OS 10.4. Currently I am on 10.2.8. I have softwares that still run on OS 9. Which I still use. I was looking at OS 10.4 and didn't see a classic. Can someone tell me is there a way to run classic on 10.4? I don't want to have 2 computers. Thank you.

    Hi Sonia,
    Welcome to Discussions!
--> If you buy a new PowerBook, Classic system folders will be (most probably, I didn't buy a PB myself) situated in the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with it. They won't be preinstalled by default.
In some cases the Software Restore icon and everything else is all in one DVD.
In some other cases it's on a separate CD.
    Anyway,
to install Classic, you'll have to first boot from this "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" (or "Software Restore") disc, and follow the Custom Install prompts.
    So:
Insert the DVD or CD and restart with the C key depressed (not the Option key).
If you restart with the Option key depressed, choose the DVD or CD as a startup disk (well, disc, in this case).
--> If you just buy a Tiger DVD to install it on your old computer, you'll have to take Classic from your old computer's Software Restore disc.

  • Do I need System Folder to run Classic in 10.4.6?

I've just bought a new MacBook Pro last night, and in the process of transferring data from my old PowerBook via FireWire connection (the automatic way) it created a number of folders that said "[title of folder] (from old Mac)". In nearly every case, this was accompanied by another folder without the "(from old Mac)" text. One that was only from the old Mac was the OS9 System Folder. Do I even need it, or is all the code necessary to run Classic embedded in 10.4.6?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Steve;
Instead of Hypercard, you might want to check into Revolution. There was a discussion of that on this thread; http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2072745&#2072745

  • OS 9 unable to boot after running classic in OS X Tiger fro first time

I have this problem with dual boot on an iMac 400 after upgrading the OS X to Tiger.
After I install the Tiger, I tried to boot up from OS 9 is OK.I restarted in OS X and launch the classic environment, it performs some update to the System Folder and run classic successfully. After which I try to restart in OS 9 by selecting in Startup Disk in Syatem Preferences, once I click restart, it starting up showing the OS 9 mac icon but it change to disk with question mark immediately.
Have anyone tried this and having the same problem ?

    Hi Leonard!
How did you upgrade to Tiger?
    Simple Upgrade?
    Archive & Install?
    Erase & Install?
Which OS did you upgrade from?
There is some info here Computer Can Start Up From Mac OS X But Not From Mac OS 9.
    Quoted from that page:
It is likely that the disk was reformatted using Disk Utility for Mac OS X, and that the option to install the Mac OS 9 drivers was not selected. If you do this and then reinstall Mac OS 9 from the Restore CD set included with your computer, it will no longer start up from Mac OS 9, for example. Any time the Mac OS 9 drivers are not installed on the hard disk, you will not be able to start up from Mac OS 9.
    Does that pertain?
    Good Luck!

  • Can the new intel iMacs run Classic?

Hi just wondering if anyone knows if you can run Classic on intel
Intel iMac 17" 1 Gig of Ram 1.83 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The inability to (easily?) run Classic was a big and unexpected issue for me, when I upgraded from my PowerPC 7500 running OS 8.6 to an Intel iMac. Frustratingly, the iMac had lots of software and lots of Help suggestions about how to migrate from OS 8 or 9 to OS 10... but none of it was useful on an Intel machine.
After a fair amount of work and some third-party shareware, got it all to work. Moving (exporting then importing) Quicken records was the most difficult task. The most persistent problem is the absence of extension or type/creator information on the files I've moved, which renders them invisible to Spotlight.

Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do NOT have; yours is a PPC Mac) '''''<u>and</u>''''' OSX 10.5 or higher.

'''''The good news''''' is that Firefox 3.6.24 still supports OSX 10.4 and Macs with the PPC Mac architecture. '''''The bad news''''' is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

  • Will OS 10.4.11 update run classic?

    Hello,
I'd like to know if I update from 10.4.6 to 10.4.11, will I still be able to run Classic?
    Thank you for the information.

    Hi,
I need your help. I have a CD-ROM that I NEED to use for a college class. It requires Classic, but I have OS 10.4.11 on my Ibook G4. All I want to do is install a Classic emulator just until this class is over in 3 weeks. Where can I download a Classic emulator?

  • Running Classic Apps on Intel Mac

Hi, I'm looking for a free and legal way to install and use classic apps. I don't have an "old" mac that runs classic, so I need an emulator or an app that can open these apps. Does anyone know any solutions?

Old Macs that run Mac OS 9 are quite cheap these days, and much more legal to obtain. See my FAQ*:

  • Running classic on Mac OS X Intel Mac

I have a brand new MacBook, running OS 10.4.9.
I have some older programs that need to be ran through classic.
I know that you can't use classic on Intel systems, and that you need SheepShaver to use it. I need a place to download an old version of Mac OS, one that would allow me to use the classic environment. Of course, I want legal solutions only =P I heard that Mac OS 7.x something was legal for download, but where can I find it, and will it allow me to run classic applications?

I rember signing a petition online somewhere to have Apple release OS to the masses for free (since 7.55 is available). Alas, I don't know what ever came of that...
But in regards to your delema, the only way to obtain a classic version that would work is to purchase it. There's a great company here in the bay area called Mac-Pro. And they have a great staff and great prices on a lot of different items. Or there's also the ever classic eBay.
More likely than not, the applications that you have will need at least Mac OS 8.6, but 9.2 is going to be your best bet.
    Hope this helps.

I have a powermac Silver with mirror doors 867 dual processors running OSX 10.2 no problem there but I need to run Classic but when I try to install OS 9.2.1 I get a "THIS PROGRAM CAN NOT RUN ON YOUR COMPUTER" message.

Your G4 (MDD) dual 867MHz model Mac requires the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 which originally came with that machine. It can not use any other version of OS 9.
The model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 can be installed using the original disk set which came with that machine; that disk set boots to OS X 10.2, but the installer on it can install OS 9.2.2 (Classic) as an option.
There is no stand-alone install disk (such as a retail, i.e. white-label, CD) which can be used to install Classic on that model G4.
