Running Disk Repair

I periodically run a disk repair, especially the permissions repair, however, when I now run the permissions repair, it runs through the script, repairs the permissions. Then I will run it again and it still has the same permissions errors. Why won't it fix the permissions? Any way to save the repairs?

Repairing permissions should only be done to troubleshoot a problem and not as routine maintenance.
Why won't it fix the permissions?
Any message containing ACL, SUID, or the first character in the permissions block being incorrect, such as lrwxr-xr-x as opposed to -rwxr-xr-x won't be repaired in this way. The third case is due to an item being a different type than expected, and usually means that you've installed recent updates from Apple.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
    Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
    the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
             with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
             After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
             a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
             and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
             (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
             username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
             Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
             install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
             Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
           it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

    try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
    diskutil list
    Please include in your reply the output from that command.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

    This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

    I am using an external drive for back up. Yesterday the backup failed and I received a message that the external drive( a passport drive) needed a 'disk repair", when I ran disk repair nothing happened it seemed to freeze. Suggestions? should i simply erase the external drive and start over-my computer is fine.

    Get a different drive for backup.
    In the meantime, once you are backed up some drive safe, then you can attempt to repair the backup drive using the repair the directory link.

  • Unable to boot from OSX 10.6 installation DVD to run Disk Repair

    I have something that is puzzling me. My MacBook Pro hasn't been giving me the best experience lately - the system just seems... slow.
    So I ran a disk permissions fix and it found some errors which I repaired. Then, I thought it might be wise to run a disk check on the System Disk as well.
    So I attempted to boot from the Mac OSX installation DVD - I tried both a "hold the "C" key" method as well as the "Set start-up disk preferences to boot from DVD" method. I even tried two different OSX installation DVD's in case one wasn't working.
    Then, I reset PRAM and I reset SMC (or at least followed the procedure as outlined by Apple - it doesn't really seem to give a strong indication of whether the process occurred or not)
    I just cannot get the system to boot from DVD. (I even tried TechTools Pro 5).
    I even let it "sit" for more than 4 hours in case it was just taking it's time.
    Can anyone think of what the deal might be? I'm REALLY wanting to run a System Disk check now!

    You learn something new every day here! I had no idea that I couldn't boot from a standard OSX boot disk and had to use the in-box one.
    It does raise the question of which version of Disk Check I will be using - as there has been several upgraded to my OS since I bought this MacBook Pro (it has 10.6.3)

    Absolutely not. If you lost your disc, call AppleCare for a replacement. If Apple doesn't have the disk, it is hard to find in the used and refurbished market*:

    One thing you can do is put your machine into target disk mode and repair disk from that computer. I would not do a software install from the host computer unless they are the same vintage and model. Another option is Single User Mode repair:

    Albeit this is not as thorough as booting off another disc to do the repair. As David Pogue says in one of his "Missing Manual" books, doing it from the same disc is like a "doctor performing an appendectomy on himself!"

    I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 model and upgraded to Yosemite. The performance on my MB is ok, but just out of curiousity I ran a disk verify, and was told I needed to reboot, hold down CMD / R and run disk repair. I did so and the repair failed. I was promoted to backup and reformat/restore.
    Now, I do backup everything using time machine (not sure though if Parallels image is backed up). I do not however have any install disks for Mac OS.
    My questions:
    1. Should I even bother reformatting my HD?
    2. How do I go about formatting the HD and then re-installing the OS and all of my apps, particularly given that I have no DVD

    If you have extra external HDD, make clone backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, then,
    1) boot from external clone backup drive.
    2) reformat internal HDD.
    3) restore from clone backup drive with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

  • Disk Repair For A DYI Fusion

    About 4 months ago I purchased a solid state drive and installed it with a regular drive (installed where the optical drive was originally located) in a Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4, 2.8 ghz i7 Core.  I followed directions provided by Other World Computing and created a fusion drive using the two disks. Everything has been working great and the fusion is smokin fast. 
    Prior to the fusion installation I always ran  the disk utility or disk warror to look for little glitches on my drive. The issue is when I boot from the recovery disk or a usb startup the two drives are shown seperately rather than one fusion drive. 
    So the question is can I run disk repair on each of the disks seperately without harming my fusion setup, or is there some other way to have a repair utility to recogonize the fusion set up on the two disks.
    I am not having major issues but in the past found that doing a check like this can be helpful.

  • Mac mini keeps crashing and scary messages apear in Disk Repair..HELP!!

    (I've already posted this on pre-2009 forum, but had no responses - sorry, but am a bit desperate!). Please help!
    I've been experiencing quite a few crashes on my Mac Mini of late. This usually starts with my web browser not responding, me trying to force-quit it, and then on shut-down it just sits there with the wheel turning, and i have to shut-down manually.
    Also, just now, on start-up it took ages to start-up...the blue screen was there for maybe 4 or so minutes, but my desk-top did appear eventually....
    i've run disk repair a few times, and it always picks up something, and have pasted the most recent log below. some items don't seem to be repairable.
    can you offer any ideas to make my mac well again?
    i have over 100gb of 160gb free, an external drive attached as well as a scanner, printer and midi-keyboard.

    ok, i didn't see D/FWs post before i ran the last repair/permissions from the install disk...
    have just run 'repair disk permissions' from the macintosh hd now (done it twice) and the log is below
    i really hope i can get o the bottom of this. if i can cure my constant crashes i'll be so relieved. not sure if it is connected, but itunes seems to go weird sometimes when burning a disk too. sometimes it'll just sit there doing nothing, othertimes it will just fail to burn disk and spit it out...and other times it'll be fine!

  • Disk repair on iMac

    i routinely run the disk repair utility on all my computers.  I runs OSX 6.8 on my iMac and when I run verify disk, i get this message "Volume header needs minor repair" and the verification run will not complete the verification.  I then run disk repair off the install disk and get message that everything is ok.  Have also run repair permissions and no problem shown.  Need some suggestions on what to do next.  I do not detect any operational issues but want to correct  before I run into a problem.

    No need really to bother with verification. If the repair using the install disk says everything is OK - it is!

  • Disk Repair Report Issue

    Hello!
    I am facing a problem.
    Every time I run Disk Repair, it does not complete the process. It stops in the middle of the process and the report does not conclude. The correct it was finished with a message GREEN or RED, informing or not an error. But every time it stops in the middle of the process, not informing anything.
    For the message to appear, I have to run it multiple times or restart the Mac into Recovery mode and run it by Disk Utility in offline mode.
    I did this same test in another Macbook Pro like mine and the same thing happens.
    See in first pic that proccess not was concluded, but the Utility finishid it.
    In second pic, I've runned the Utility 2 times to the proccess be completed. And see that the report not is the same!!
    Would anyone advise what might be happening?
