Running Disk Warrior *with* network access?

I have a machine with a bad drive that several people have stated Disk Warrior will have no problem fixing. However, the only drive I have with enough room to pull files to is in my own machine. That drive is shared on the network.
Reading over the DW documentation, and aided by their tech support, it appears the DW's bootup does not support networking of any sort. It *will* talk to a network drive if it is already mounted on the machine in question.
So can anyone think of a way to do this? I have a USB with the 10.7.4 installer on it, which (IIRC) boots into Disk Tools when you start off of it. Is there some way to access/mount a network drive in when booted this way?

The Disk Warrior support people may be able to suggest a method to use their product, however it was historically intended to be run from an operating system or a boot volume on a disc. A bootable clone in external drive (with DW installed) was a method I'd used some years ago on a Mac OS X far far antiquated.
Not sure if the Installer would be able to be used in that way, from the USB flash drive; it may be unable to choose the Disk Warrior. If the suspect failed computer has no built in optical drive, but can network to another which has one, a DVD media (maybe) could be run from another Mac. I've always used cables, and as fast as possible ports that support the OS X data flow and booting clones, etc. Some aspects of sharing require the system to work.

Running Disk Warrior on Time Machine Drive
is this recommended? I like using it on the Mac & other drives but am concerned that its optomizing may interfere w/ the way Time Machine Bkups get organized.
    Thanks
    DS

I'd be a bit inclined to leave it alone, particularly if you aren't actually having any problems. The TM machine folders are organized in their own special way.

How can i run Disk warrior on the system drive?
Can I load the utility on an external drive and boot up from that drive?
How do I boot the Macpro from the external drive?

Install an OS on the external drive and then DiskWarrior. If you have DiskWarrior on DVD, you may be able to use that as well.

  • How do I run Disk Warrior on new MacBook Pros?

I am trying to help my good friend who purchased a Late-2012 Macbook Pro 13-inch Core i5 2.5 GHz. It runs 10.8 ML. WIth reckless technical abandon, she swamped and corrupted her HD directory with repeated massive transfers of large-size photo files in and out of her laptop when the drive was already probably at least 95% full to capacity. She probably experienced repeated Out-of-Memory notifications as she would try to perform these ops while Photoshop was using almost all available free space on the same disk as Scratch Storage for its operations.
Suddenly she could not boot her MBP. She called Apple warranty support, and they convinced her the only thing she could do was to wipe the HD and reinstall the OS. Angry as **** about losing about 3 weeks of critical photo images since her last backup, she dutifully obeyed. She said the wipe operation took only a part of a minute.
So, with that background, I told her I felt the wipe was not a low-level erase at all, but just the most minimal erase procedure possible, and that I thought many of her old files may be recoverable with a tool like DiskWarrior if she did it immediately, before starting to reinstall applications and other content back onto the disk. Can anyone back me up on this?
Now, on to how I can try to do the recovery. She has considered sending the drive out to a "clean room" recovery service, but before doing so at great cost, I wanted to at least try a DiskWarrior directory repair. With no optical drive, she cannot boot from the Disk Warrior 7.X DVD, or create a bootable CD or DVD to run Disc Warrior for the same reason. How else can we force the MBP to allow the hard drive to be read by DiskWarrior? Can I load DW on a FireWire drive and use Thunderbolt-to-FW adapter on MBP to boot from it? Disk Warrior's website still says "The current DiskWarrior DVD cannot start up the new MacBook Pros introduced June 11, 2012. An updated disc that will also start up these recent Mac models will be released as soon as Apple, Inc. releases new startup files to Alsoft, Inc. and other developers." Do I still have to wait for something from Apple? Or can I put the MBP in Target Mode and run DW connected via FireWire (and Thunderbolt adapter) from my own MacBook running OSX Lion?  And hopefully repair her directory? Is there hope here?

You'll need to install Windows on your Macbook. This can be done by either using Boot Camp (free, from Apple) or Parallels Desktop for Mac (free trial, $80 retail). Either approach requires that you own an additional copy of Windows (Windows XP sp2 for Boot Camp) which you will then install on your Mac.
In brief, Boot Camp sets up your Mac so you can boot into either OS X or Windows (but not have both running at the same time; you switch via a reboot), and Parallels creates a virtual machine in which you will run Windows while OS X is running. You're correct that you can't run Virtual PC on your Intel-based Mac. Parallels will give you that functionality on your Mac (and be a lot faster than Virtual PC in the process).
You might want to start with Parallels' free trial and see if that meets your needs for these CDs. Parallels doesn't require that you make changes to your partitions on your drive; it just installs an application and creates a virtual disk which to OS X is just another file (albeit a large one), and you don't need to reboot to switch back and forth between Windows and OS X. If it works, you're set.
If you have graphics adapter-intensive Windows applications (e.g., games or something that requires 3D acceleration), you'll be better off with Boot Camp, because the current version of Parallels does not support DirectX or 3D hardware acceleration.
Hopefully that will get you started. There's other info in the Discussions comparing Parallels to Boot Camp, but feel free to ask if you have questions.

  • Disk Warrior with PC???

    Good Morning,
    I hope somebody can help!
I work in tech support for PC however I couldn't be any more of a mac novoice. My sisters Macbook Pro will not boot and I have gone through various diagnosis tips from various forums online.
The problem is with the following
    'Keys Out of Order'
    'Rebuilding B-tree'
The Volume HD could not be reapired'
The built in disk utility advises that I need to back up files and reformat/reinstall OS. The whole problem is that my sister has STUPIDLY never backed anything up and has files on there that are ridiciously important to her.
I have found a download for 'Disk Warrior' which seems like it could be a saviour, however the only other computer I have is my Windows Laptop and an extrernal hard drive...is there anything I can do at all??
    Thanks so much in advance

    ellengrac4 wrote:
Can I just ask, is this an actual hardware problem where a new hard drive is needed or if worst comes to the worst, would it be possible to format and reinstall?
Can't tell whether the drive has a hardware problem yet, but it could have.
How old is this Mac and what version of OS X is on it?
Can I just ask for my cards on the table and ask if her data/files are at all able to be saved and whats the cheapest/easiest way for a fix?
Maybe, but as the Mac won't boot this requires that you remove the drive and access it externally from this Mac (with a new drive fitted) or some other Mac.
She has an appt at the genius bar at apple on Monday..will they just say the same thing?
Again I can't tell what they will say, but they might. I do know that without a backup I would not let the Genius bar work on the machine (if the data is important).
Answer question 1 and we will look at some alternatives, but the version of OSX has a part to play in what can be done, so which version is it?

  • EJB with network-access-point exception "getServerChannel() not supported."

    Hi,
My task is to get a specific remote bean only to be available on a certain port (still using the t3 protocol). The bean is called MyRemoteBeanEJB. I have tried to accomplish this with the use of network-access-point In my weblogic-ejb-jar.xml:
         <weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              <ejb-name>MyRemoteBeanEJB</ejb-name>
              *<network-access-point>MyChannel</network-access-point>*
         </weblogic-enterprise-bean>
And on the AdminServer i have created a channel called MyChannel ( [Network Channel|http://i.imgur.com/3tss0.png] ). I'm running Weblogic Server 10.3.2 with EJB3.0.
The channel is active (from the debug output):
    <Notice> <Server> <BEA-002613> <Channel "MyChannel[11]" is now listening on 127.0.0.1:7042 for protocols t3.>
THEN from my fat client i look up the remote bean, everything works fine,
    MyRemoteBeanInterface remoteBean = ic.lookup(..); // t3://localhost:7042
BUT when i try to call a method I get the following output on the server:
    <2012-dec-05 kl 15:56 CET> <Warning> <RMI> <BEA-080004> <An error was thrown by rmi server:

If I remove the network-access-point tag it works (but I loose the point of restricting the bean to a certain port).
I decompiled the weblogic.rjvm.RJVMImpl class found in wlfullclient.jar (the client jar with all weblogic deps), and at line 769:

    throw new AssertionError("getServerChannel() not supported");
Google let me down and really, i have no idea what's wrong.... Maybe i'm not using it in an expected way or i'm missing something.
Anybody with any insights or even better, solutions?!
    Thanks!

    Syed,
First off, for voice, you will need -65dBm at the edge of the cell. If you are trying to cover outside areas then the 1500 or 1550 is your best choice if you can provide a mounting area and power. I don't know your coverage layout, but you can use the 1142's inside but not outside. You should also use the latest 1.4.x on the phone. It's tough to provide voice coverage outside unless you can place mesh AP's outside at given locations. You will also need QoS enabled on both the wireless and wired.

  • Time machine running slow and slowing network access

I have had and continue to have issues with wifi on my MBP.  Those are pretty well summarized in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5535320?start=30&tstart=0.  I've been able to make mt system usable with some of the less dodgy workarounds in that thread ( like keeping a ping on my router running )
That thread really doesn't mention the issues I've been having with time machine though, so I thought I'd bring this up here.  Whenever time machine starts up, Safari and mail become unresponsive.  It's worst when TM is "preparing" of "cleaningup", though barely usable during the actual backup.  Mostly, I can work around that too, but occationally, TM will find GB of data to be backed up and lock up my mac for a day.  Here's a recent example:

This is on an AC router.  My peak throughput shows 19 Mb/s on menu meters, so, not great, but not this slow.  Mostly, the network activity is nothing with short bursts of higher throughput.
I'm hoping this will be addressed in 10.9.2.  In the mean time, are there any workarounds to get past this issue short of turning off TM?
    Thanks,
    Horst

The Unix program dd is a disk copying util that you can use at the command line in order to make a disk image. It makes a bit-by-bit copy of the drive it's copying, caring nothing about filesystem type, files, or anything else. It's a great way to workaround the need for Norton Ghost.
Normally, in order to make a disk image, the disk you're copying from has to be able to spin up and talk -- in other words, it's OK to make a copy if the disk is healthy. But what happens when your disk is becoming a doorstop? As long as it continues to spin, even with physical damage on the drive, dd and Mac OS X will get you out of the fire.
We had a situation recently where a friend sent a disk to us that had hard physical errors on it. It would boot in Windows, but then it would hit one of these scratch marks and just die. We fired up dd, and it started OK, but stopped at the same physical error location -- complaining about a Hard Error.
So the workaround was to designate the dd mode as noerror -- which just slides over the hard stops, and to add the mode sync, which fills the image with nulls at that point. We did it on BSD Unix, but as long as you can get the hard drive attached to your Mac, the command is the same:
    dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror,sync
The bs=512 designates block size, and the if=/dev/rXX# is the UNIX path to the actual disk device. Make sure that the chosen directory (some_dir) has enough room to take the entire disk image -- which will be equal to the size of the drive. Since dd doesn't care about the contents of the drive, it copies every bit on the thing, so you get an image equal to the disk's capacity. A really big file. One workaround is to put it on a RAID array.
Once you've established the disk image (in this example, foo.dmg), you're almost home. Here's where your Mac OS X box is far and away the best thing to have. In this example, the dd output file is foo.dmg. You have to realize that this is an exact copy of a busted drive, but the "holes" are filled with nulls. As long as the damage isn't to the boot sector, though, when you double-click on it, Mac OS X mounts it without breathing hard ... who cares if it's FAT32, NTFS, whatever.
Due to the size of the image that we were copying, we put it on a RAID array, and had to access the image over the network -- it still mounted fine. In straight UNIX, if you try to mount a disk image, it complains that there is "no block device" and fails. Once your image is mounted, it appears in your Finder, and then it's easy work to retrieve the critical files from the image -- usually things like .doc files and .xls files and the lot.
Finally, since your disk is actually dying, once you have your image, you can drop it to tape or something and you've not only recovered your files, you've made a viable backup as well. Once again, that which destroys a Windows box becomes a play thing to a Mac OS X box.

  • Urgent Help with network access to FileOutputStream

URGENT HELP NEEDED GUYS...I am stuck on this past 2 days. I tried several alternatives but to vain.
I am trying to access a Folder on a user's computer which is lying in a different Domain.
For accessing this folder, I have the following information with me.
Domain name, PC name, folder name, windows username, windows password.
Note: This username and password will give me rights to read + write to that folder.
How to use these information to open a fileoutputstream ? Does the java.io package allow programs to pass a username, password , domainname, pcname and then the folder and filename to create/read/write files..
Pls. suggest code examples. Sometime back I posted this query but didnt get an answer to my satisfaction. I have tried at my end but unsuccessful yet. Help would be appreciated.
I am trying this on a Windows File System and Network domain
    THIS IS V. URGENT
    Thanks,

    Hi HJK,
I am referring to the last reply of yours.
" Hi, there are three approaches I can think of offhand:
    1) make sure the user-context under which you run the java app has the right to access the remote drive.
    2) Do the network connection in a batch or c program and call that at the start of your java app with Runtime#exec.
    3) Write some c/c++ code to open the connection and integrate that via JNI.
Let me know what (other) solution you came up with in the end!
    Regarding the 1st.
I am supposed to write a remote installation utility actually. There are around 200 PC(s) in a network on which I need to copy these java class files. My problem statement is such that at runtime I only have username, passwords, domain access. I am not supposed to map any drives. Its supposed to be done dynamically. No manual intervention required. :(
How do I do the network connection in a batch mode ? Let me know that?
If 2nd option can be done, probably I can think of action-3 at the moment I am quite blurr :(

  • Problems with network access after applying batch of updates

    Hi all,
Yesterday, I've applied a batch of updates to my Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V server. All went good, but after the reboot I was not able to access... Microsoft website for update download, or WSUS to Report and detect updates.
    For my troubleshooting I did:
    ping www.microsoft.com (DNS goes well)
With Wireshark running, did a http request to www.microsoft.com and I don't see any request leaving the NIC. This goes to *.microsoft.com
This happens either with or without Proxy set up.
I've reset Internet Explorer Settings, all with no luck.
When trying over our WSUS, I get error 80244019, and with wireshark I can see that WSUS may not be able to get the updates because it is replying with 404 not found.

Seems to me two issues here. One I might workaround with deleting the WSUS content, and let WSUS resync(may solve).
The other... It's strange because can't seem to have www.microsoft.com leave my nic...
As part of the troubleshooting, I have two nics teamed, 1 nic for live migration, 1 nic for cluster network, and teaming, obviously has itself a single default gateway.
What can I do to go forward?
PS: One last finding. In WSUS this server does not report since 13th January at 11:00 a.m. I've forced it to report, and still no update/report
    Nuno Silva

    Hi Nuno,
Do you mean that you can't see a HTTP request of
www.microsoft.com when you access it with Internet Explorer?
Can you successfully access the www.microsoft.com with the Internet Explorer? If yes, it should be normal. Because
    www.microsoft.com is a CNAME.
    >>but after the reboot I was not able to access... Microsoft website for update download, or WSUS to Report and detect updates.
Please try to update from Microsoft Update. Then post the windowsupdate.log here. It may give some hints.
    Best Regards.

  • Black screen after running disk warrior

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

let me elaborate. I ran DW and after it was finished, I restarted. This is the point where the screen stays completly black.

  • After running Disk Warrior on my 5G iPod it's...........

I decided to have DW take a look at my new 5G iPod.......So I ran the Graph part of DW and found that more that 51% of the items were out of order. I then ran Rebuild and afterwards replace. Low a behold the iPod seems to be more responsive (faster).

    never mind

  • Rebuild with Disk Warrior

My hard drive failed the other day. I ran Disk Utility on it and when trying to repair permissions, I got errors saying that Disk Utility could not fix problems because of a drive failure.
I tried Drive Genius to do some diagnostics, but it couldn't do anything to the drive.
So, I can rebuild the drive with Disk Warrior, but it can't replace it. It will let me preview it. So, I can move the files to another drive. But what do I do after that? I assume I have to wipe the drive and reformat it. But then how do I get the backed up info onto that drive? Can I use Disk Utility for that? I know there's a Restore feature. If I can get the files onto the drive, will it be bootable?
Also, the drive is healthy, according to Disk Warrior, but should this be an indication that it's time for a new drive?

Kurt, it occurs to me that Al might be trying to rebuild that drive while still booted from it. He didn't mention it, but you didn't ask. If that's the problem, Disk Warrior would, as always, return the message that it can rebuild the directory info but can't replace it.
I'm sure Al already knows this. However, even very experienced people get in a hurry and forget that they must boot (and run Disk Warrior) from another drive (or from the CD / DVD that Alsoft ships to purchasers, which has both Disk Warrior and an OS X boot system on it) if they want to actually complete a repair of their main boot HD.
If you boot from the drive that you're trying to scan and repair, Disk Warrior will play nice and scan  it, and can do various other graphing and diagnostic functions, but DW will refuse to whack, optimize and replace the directory & table files -- which is what performs the actual DW magic.

  • Issues with freezing and now, Disk Warrior.

My Mac keeps freezing (with the pinwheel).  I went to run Disk Warrior to see if that helped, and it told me to delete a file that didn't exsist (com.Alsoft.diskwarrior.prefs... or something like that).  I am at the end of my rope.  Please help.

OK thanks. With the exception of the Disk Warrior dialog, everything looks completely normal.
I recommend doing as it says - find Disk Warrior prefs and drag it to the trash. Most likely you will find it in your user's Library folder. To find it navigate to your Macintosh HD, open the Library folder, and open the Preferences folder. Find the suspect file and drag it out of there.
Yours will not look exactly like the following but you shoud be able to figure it out:
You should also find a way to get rid of Disk Warrior. It is not helping and may be hurting.
Troubleshooting this problem will also be hindered by not having an original system install DVD. Without it you will not be able to run Apple Hardware Test, you will not be able to repair your hard disk using Disk Utility, and you will you be able to reinstall the OS, which is one of the suggested remedies in the link I posted earlier. I recommend you buy a replacement disk from Apple if for no other reason than to be able to reinstall an unadulterated version of Snow Leopard. It is only $30.
There are some other things to try.
Creating a temporary user to isolate user-specific problems: Isolating an issue by using another user account
Starting the computer in "safe mode": Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Read about what Safe Mode does before doing it - particularly, it will take longer to boot and some things simply won't work normally. However, if running in safe mode stops the freezes it will be a clue we can work with.

  • Assistance with Disk Warrior and Flashing Question Mark

    Hello, guys!
I need a help. My computer was not booting and kept flashing question mark. I've tried First Aid, didn't help. Then I've checked with Apple store technicians, after all they reccommentd me to run Disk Warrior v.4. I did, but it couldn't create a directory for the files. What does it mean? What would be next step?
Thank you very much for any advice.

Hi, Olimpia. If your hard drive's directory is very, very badly damaged, DiskWarrior may not be able to reconstruct it. Did you see an error message in Diskwarrior that said something like that? If so, you have no choice but to use something like Data Rescue II to recover what files it can, and then erase and zero the hard drive and start over.
If you didn't see any error message, but Diskwarrior seemed to be taking a very long time and didn't appear to be doing anything, it was probably still working and just needed time and patience. I've seen several reports of Diskwarrior successfully rebuilding badly damaged directories but taking several days to do it, and one instance when it successfully completed a rebuild after *14 days* of continuous work. If it doesn't show any error message, just let it keep on working.
