Running hot after mountain lion install

Hello,
I just installed Mountain Lion last night. I had no issues at all. Checked out some of the different new features and all seemed to work fine.
But this morning after I turned my MacBook Pro back on is where I noticed something odd. I was using messages and also Safari. It was working great. My baterry was at 99% when I first turned it on. After about an hour of use I noticed the battery down to 67% and that Safari was not running as quick. It's not that it was not responding just running slow. Real slow. So I turned it back off and let it sit for a half hour and started it back up. Seems to running ok now. I even have a few programs open as well as the last time.
I just wanted to post here to see if anyone else had this issue. I think it's isolated and maybe some things didn't boot enough after install. Thoughts on this from anyone is greatly appreciated. Again it is runing fine and the slowing issue does not seem to be there now.
Thank You

Yes, me too. My Activity Monitor shows Safari Web Content absolutely destroying the CPU, exceeding 100%. Slows the whole system up just browsing.
Just compared browsing a facebook album in Chrome and Safari 6. Safari crawls through it with the CPU jumping immediately to over 90% while Chrome's processes barely ever reach 20%.
Also read this which suggests Spotlight's indexing is a potential cause but on my MBP (late 2011) Spotlight isn't shown as active:
http://gigaom.com/apple/is-mountain-lion-too-hot-for-your-mac-to-handle/
and also the CPU only runs hot while on Safari. Processor-heavy XCode consistently runs fine.
Assume a Safari bug. Anyone else experiencing this?
UPDATE: Restarting Safari makes a massive difference both to the real memory and the %CPU figures.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro running hot after mountain lion upgrade?

The fan is on high all the time and the system is running very hot. It also consumes the battery way faster than it used to.

Thanks for your links.  My MacBook fan was running constantly from switch on and the underside was getting very hot.  Using your first link, I followed the Activity Monitor instructions and found that Dashboard was using '117%'.  As soon as I closed it down the fan instantly slowed and after only a few seconds switched off..
    Thanks again..

After Mountain Lion install, my MacBook Pro's fan is running non-stop and you can hear the insides working extra hard. Is this normal? It's very loud and annoying?

  • Problem with mail after mountain lion install

Mail has become sluggish to locking up after Mountain Lion install.  I get the color wheel each time I start typing in an address to send an email.  I also get the wheel when i am typing an address or name in any web page in Safari.  Is this a Mail Problem or an Address Book problem?

It sounds like your computer needs to be cleaned up. Have your repaired permissions or cleared caches since you got the computer. Often times when upgrading operating systems permissions get screwed up and it causes issues.  Go to disk utility in your "other" folder in applications.  Select disk utility, then on the left hand side choose Mac HD then click REPAIR permissions in the center section. Wait for it to finish, restart your computer, then test.

  • After Mountain Lion install, my iMac powers off instead of just going to sleep. Help? Thanks.

After I installed Mountain Lion on my 2009 iMac, it will power off after I don't use it a while. It used to just go to sleep, I'd shake the mouse, and it would come back up. Now it powers off and I have to power it back up every time.
My Macbook has NOT had this problem since Mountain Lion install. It is fine.

Do these resets to clear errant commands:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Trackpad issues after mountain lion install

Since my Mountain Lion install, the trackpad on my 15" MBP will track, but won't select anything.  Hot corners aren't working, the dock won't appear, etc.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Got similar issues, no notifications and no switching between full screen apps (4fingerswipe). Some swipe features work, no secondary click in bottsom corners...Trackpad operational under Mountain Lion a total nuisance compared to Snow Leopard...PLease Apple, show some respect again to your faithfull customers and show some response!

  • Time Machine backup not working after Mountain Lion Install

Oh my.  It seems that Mountain Lion and Lion Server are different species and cannot be interbred!  Is this really true?
I am running OSX Lion Server on a late 2009 iMac with the main purpose of allowing the MacBook Pros in the house (both running Lion 10.7.4) to wirelessly back up to Time Machine.  All has gone well until I upgraded one of the MacBooks to Mountain Lion.  Now it appears that Time Machine via the server is no longer available on that MacBook.  Also, the Server Admin app is also disabled.
    My questions are:
Is it necessary to upgrade to OSX Server if I wish to use the server a Time Machine target for Mabooks running Mountain Lion?
If I do upgrade to OSX Server, is it also necessary to upgrade all the Macbooks to Mountain Lion?
Is OSX Server stable enough to bother with at this time?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Well I can have a go at answering you questions
Is it necessary to upgrade to OSX Server if I wish to use the server a Time Machine target for Mabooks running Mountain Lion?
I'm not sure about this one as it didn't check before I upgraded my server to Mountain Lion but I would be suprised if a Lion Server (10.7.4) could not back up a Mountain Lion (10.8) client
If I do upgrade to OSX Server, is it also necessary to upgrade all the Macbooks to Mountain Lion?
No, I am running a mix of 10.8 and 10.7.4 clients with a 10.8 server and they all backup with Time Machine.
Is OSX Server stable enough to bother with at this time?
This is a very subjective area - my server is running well using Mountain Lion, it's not used heavily as it's mainly for backing up a few clients, running the built in wiki, web server, calendar and contacts.  It's running fine and I like the additions enough to put up with the bugs [single sign on / kerberos is the one impacting me].  However if you search here you can find other who are having many more issues. This one is a personal choice you'll have to make.
For the server app, you have to run the same version across the server and the client to use it, you can always use screen share to get to the server and run the server app directly on the server.  This is what I do when using a 10.7.4 client.
Hope this helps with you decisions.

  • IMac 21.5" 2010 Running Hot with Mountain Lion

    Hello All -
I have a 2010 iMac i3 with 8GB RAM that I clean installed Mountain Lion on and the thing gets hot (very hot to the touch on the outside) very fast doing ordinary tasks (email, browsing the internet using Safari or Chrome, calendar). Temperatures on the hard drive typically stay below 50C but the power supply specifically can reach 75-80C when running full screen HD video (GPU will be around 55-60C at this time as well). The fans will increase to about 1500rpm for heavy loads and then go back to around 1000-1200rpm during normal tasks. I feel like Snow Leopard did not run this hot and perhaps because of all the iCloud and Notification Center processes running behind the scenes, ML may just require far more power than SL. Honestly, I'm really considering just going back to SL all together as I don't use much of the iCloud stuff.
Has anyone else noticed their iMac's running hotter after installing ML? I realize that it will run hot for up to a week after install because of Spotlight. I installed ML the day it came out, so it's been quite a while. I would really appreciate any feedback.

If you don't use iCloud, open System Preferences > iCloud and turn that off

  • Mac running slow after mountain lion

Mac startted running slower about a week after downloading Mountain Lion. Is that possible related?

Probably not but you haven't said anything about your system configuration so that may have a bearing on things. How much RAM is installed on your machine? If you have the 2GB minimum then you almost certainly could benefit by a RAM upgrade. Please complete your profile so we know a bit more about your system, it won't help on this thread because the thread has already begun however it will be useful down the road. For instructions on how please click Profile Update.
Another thing you can do is open Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and run Repair Disk Permissions, I'd recommend doing that at least 2X.

  • Thunderbolt is not working after Mountain Lion installed

I'm putting this discussion again because the problem didn't solve like I thought !
As you can see from the title that I have a problem already after I installed the new OS X Mountain Lion. I got my thunderbolt to Hdmi adabtor connected to an LCD TV and it was working great with snow lepord. But after the I installed Mountain Lion. it won't even recognize that there is something connected and I don't see the options in my System Prefrences> Diplays like before.
I already run software update and it's all up to date and also done a PRAM reset and nothing changed.
It only ok for a couple of min. if I restarted it and without the sound working from the LCD TV.
    Please I need help here.

Well I would have hit repair. This might be stemming from a deeper issue with the installation. I've never seen that dialogue box before, and if ignoring it and booting normally worked for you then I say you did the right thing.
    however
I would, go to disk utility and then select your boot drive and verify and repair disks and permissions.
if anything else WEIRD should occur, you may want to go to the recovery partition of ML (cmd+R while hearing the boot chime) and reinstalling ML. That dialogue box you mentioned is strange and should be noted. A reinstall will probably fix whatever issue comes up.

  • Iphoto disconnected after mountain lion install

After installing mountain lion can't access my iphoto library?
Error message claims" iphoto quit unexpectedly"?

you either need to run software update once more (there was a major update for a lot of iLife apps when ML came out for support with ML).
or you need to reinstall ML from the recovery partition after running disk utility and verifing and repairing disks and permissions.
hold CMD R to get into the recovery partition during the boot chime.

  • MacBook Pro runs slow after Mountain Lion installation

I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro with 2.2g Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB encrypted disc.
After installing Mountain Lion and the recent upgrade OS X 10.8.1 (12B19), the system runs noticibly slower than with Lion, which ran slower than the previous version.  This shows up in opening and closing programs, rate that drop down windows appear when something is clicked on the task bar,  rate that windows open and close, rate that the dock comes up and the icons expand when the curser is moved over them, etc.
Due to my type of work, I need to encrypt the disc.  I know this is costing me some speed.  I unencrypted the disc and it ran noticably faster, and when I re-encrypted it seemed to run faster than before unencrptying and re-encripting.  I have repaired permissions and verified the disk OK.
Somewhere in the build up to Mountain Lion release I thought I read where 4 GB of ram was recomended for Mountain Lion, allthough now the specs indicate 2 GB is OK.  In activity monitor, the pie chart for system memory seems to always remain less than about 40% of active memory (yellow).
What recomendations does the community have to increase the speed of operations back to when this system was new?
    Dave

I was having the exact same problem.  My MacBook Pro was seriously close to unusable how slow it was.  On a different thread, someone recommended I reset the VRAM and PVRAM (not sure about those initials).  Shut down computer.  Rebooted while holding down Command-Option-P-R all at the same time until I heard the second startup tone and then released.  I noticed an improvement in performance immediately.

  • Cannot select buttons in FileMaker after Mountain Lion Install

Because the installer claimed I'd tinkered with my partitions (I haven't, unless accessing BootCamp from Parallels counts), I had to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. That in itself was a pain because I could not successfully create an installer on a USB flash disk after several attempts. I had to boot over the internet. After successfully creating a virgin 10.8 system, I restored my system from Time Machine, last backup a few minutes before I started this process.
None of my mail configuration carried over -- rules, signatures, smart folders all lost. Also lost SignatureProfiles preferences, including the registration code. Those are all things I can painfully recreate. However, I am unable to use FileMaker Pro. When it opens, I am unable to select buttons in the format bar, buttons in my applications, and can't resize the window. I have removed ~/Library/Preferences/*trackpad* and *mouse* to no avail. Removed ~/Library/Preferences/*FileMaker* files (all the way back to FileMaker 5). To no avail.
I created a new account on my system and FileMaker runs fine.
    Which preference file is corrupt?

Okay, I logged out, logged in as root, copied all of top root level directories into the new account and changed their ownership appropriately. FileMaker works. I deleted my account, and renamed the new account using apple method to my old account name, and FileMaker fails. Renamed it again to a different name, and it works. I guess 'sbradley' is an invalid account name
Still wishing I could recover my rules and signatures.
