Running in Safe Mode - are there any implications. ( a sub section of Rebooting problem continued...)

As with others I have become frustarted by my 9720 rebooting at random sometimes mid call and often at annoying times. I often have to take out the battery too, otherwise it will not restart. I have wiped, rebooted and even tried the 4hr 15 min trick all to no avail.
I am now running in permanent safe mode - the blackberry works fine and I hope I may have found a solution. Nobody seems 100% sure what the problem is caused by, if I have found a cure I'll be pleased, if however there are issues with running in Safe Mode I would be pleased to know.
I don't want toi change phones but the last few days have been very annoying.
Rogero

Safe Mode is not intended to be an "answer"...rather, it is a diagnostic tool to try and root out the cause of issues. It's sole intended purpose is to try and determine if any auto-running add-on or 3rd party apps might be causal to a situation, by suppressing the auto-run at boot up of those items. But, it is not intended to be part of any "normal operation" of the device.
If the results of Safe Mode are that the behavior continues, then other diagnostic steps must be conducted to try and determine the proper course of action. Quite often, there never can be any true diagnosis...but, rather, attempting a series of different remedies until the behavior is cured. For example, if OS corruption is the root cause, it can't really be diagnosed (especially at an internet distance)...rather, reloading the OS might cure the corruption and re-establish good operations.
But, reloading the OS might also cure other causes, so truly knowing exactly what the root cause is quite often impossible. And, if the issue is hardware (as with your suspicion of the battery), then no amount of OS or software "fixes" can truly be a remedy at all.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Are there any implications on changing a dense dimension to sparse?

We have some calculation performance issues where our calc is taking a long time to run. We have 6 dimensions, Scenario, Period/Months, Years, Currency, Market, and Accounts. Market and Accounts are the only Sparse members. We tried to make Years sparse (through research, although all the years have data), and the calculation time improved significantly. My question is, will this change have any implications on retrieval or data load?
    Here's our calc:
    Agg(Accounts, Market)

The short answer is 'yes', it may have implications, and you will have to test to figure out what they are.
'Years' is a classic candidate to be a sparse dimension (as is 'Scenario'). But your cube design sounds unusual, at least in my experience, which may or may not be for good reasons. So it's all but impossible to make predictions or recommendations without knowing more about the cube and the input dataset.
Incidentally, the simple fact that all years have some data doesn't in itself make Years a candidate for a dense dimension (which is what you seem to be implying). Within reasonable limits of block size, you want to select dense and sparse dimensions such that when data exists at a sparse intersection, the largest possible proportion of dense combinations are populated. Just for example, if you have Product, Region, Account and Period dimensions and your company sells only a small proportion of Products in any given Region, Account and Period are likely good candidates to be Dense dimensions: Where data does exist for a Product / Region combination, many Account / Period combinations are filled. Region and Product are likely poor candidates for Dense dimensions, because almost all Region / Product combinations are empty even where data exists for an Account / Period. So the simple fact that all Products have some data doesn't make Product a good dense candidate.
Hope this is of some use... :)

  • 12.02 vs 12.1, are there any big changes

We are running 12.02. Are there any major changes with 12.1 and would there be any benefit to upgrade? I can't find any information / release notes with sufficient information on 12.1 and CDH. I wish Oracle would publish more documentation on CDH, because as you can see from this forum, unless you have worked with the product the information on Oracle's web site is very very vague.
    Thanks

There are no major changes as far as the architecture is concerned. However, there are some enhanced features and some new profile options added for CDH flexibility. Some of them are listed below:
    *1. Percentage based threshold values*
    - Match Threshold and Override Threshold values can be specified as a percentage instead of a raw score
    *2. Address validation across firewall*
    - The third party address validation adapter can be implemented within the standard firewall configuration
*3. Improved Performance of Create Merge Batch Process*
    - A new Profile "Enable DQM Merge Suggestion" created in the Create Merge Batch process
*4. Improved Performance of System Duplicate Identification Tab*
    - The System Duplicate Identification Tab will show only the Batch details that are created by the Login User instead of all All Batch Details
    *5. Web Services*
    - New Web Services are based on the existing Business Object APIs
    - Spoke applications can leverage CDH Web Services to integrate with the Customer Data Hub

Are there any ventilation issues with running a macbook air in clamshell mode?

    ...that makes sense to me.
but, why do so many MBA users (on this forum and others) claim that ventilation occurs through the keyboard?  Is this claim based on an old macbook design?
for example, here's a related discussion (although fairly old):

A common misconception of unknown origin. The intake and the exhaust for the cooling fan on the 13" MB and MBP are both located on the rear slot at the base of the hinge. In fact, you can actually see the divider that separates the intake flow from the output flow. If it were through the keyboard crevices, then an awful lot of overheats would result from people using impermeable keyboard covers, as well as Apple's warranty department would be flipping out over the Apple store carrying such covers. iSkin ProTouch FX Keyboard Cover for all MacBooks - Black Printed Keys on White - Apple Store (U.S.)

once again, I've tried a few of these keyboard covers. the Moshi keyboard cover is the ONLY one I can recommend. the others are too thick or change the keyboard experience too much.

Re: Is it safe to use MBP with screen lid closed? Leave charge on always?
    1. Closing the cover will cause more heat. This is not because of covering the keyboard very much (though it does help some heat be retained). It's mainly because of the shape of the hinge and the fact when closed it covers up the back vent a lot more. For the best cooling, it is best to have the screen open. Just run it as a dual monitor, but make the external the Primary monitor, and if you don't want to use the built in, just turn its backlight off and don't use it.
    2. The thing you plug into the wall is not a battery charger. The actual "charger" is built into the computer. It knows when to charge and when not to. If the little light on the power plug is amber, then its charging your battery. When its green, its just powering the laptop and NOT charging your battery at all.

Re: Is it safe to use MBP with screen lid closed? Leave charge on always?
I'd leave the lid open, at least partially...yes it may be fine not doing that, but you are making heat dissipate worse, of course could even theoretically hurt the screen.
As for the battery...well there's really only two choices, have it plugged in or not. As others mentioned, you can't overcharge the battery. It can be damaged a bit from heat, but of course the number one thing that's going to damage it is discharging it...so it's a no brainer-use it plugged in whenever possible, and try to charge it whenever possible when it's not plugged in.

Nope. Apple would disagree with you on that one. Any "closure", which is, when compared to the amount of CFM, is insignificant. In fact, the opening size remains the same. it is only deflected at a slight angle when the lid is closed. Tilt your MBP and see. As well, shutting down the display lowers the heat being generated, even in the lower case. As I said, if it were a problem, Apple would not be selling stands designed to operate your unit in the closed position as the original poster of this thread proposes to do.

  • I have an imac G5 with a power PC chip running os 10.5.8.  and using safari 5.0.6. are there any security threats i should be aware of?          s there a

are there any security concerns using my PPC imac g5 running OS 10.5.8 and using Safari 5.0.6?

You could use a browser that does not use Flash or Java, as a safety measure when visiting sites; the Safari browser has no support or recent updates. TenFourFox v 24 is fairly good, and uses later Mozilla code, is compatible with powerPC computer limitations. SeaMonkeyPPC has a similar code, but acts a little different; and there still is iCab, a good browser that will run free, but asks you get a $20. license.
The Safari browser can be used to set a different browser up as system default, so it won't launch and open attachments or web pages; it has a setting in its preferences where you choose another browser as default. As I have four or five browsers and one dedicated to gmail (launched as signed-in, through notifier) that is how I've used the default, otherwise mine are all in the Dock.
There is no new upgrade for Adobe Flash plugin player, etc; but the one in their site for vintage is still available at getflash player at Adobe. Most prompts online are to get you something else, even adware loads up from some not-so-clever efforts to get people to install junk. So go to the source. Someone wrote a patch that is supposed to allow a later version of Flash player to work in older 10.5.8 PPC Mac, but I have not tried it.
The thread of security is mostly based on the user and their caution to avoid odd free software and also avoid some sites that try to get people to load cleanmymac or genieo, or other adware malware voluntarily. Those are troublesome and hard to remove, and can waste processor cycles, slow the computer & mess it up. Mostly from a browser the adware issues arise. For those you see The Safe Mac and read up on the adware removal guide, among others linked on the page: http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/
So anyway, there is really nothing new on the face of it for obsolete OS X systems users.
    Good luck & happy computing!

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • I want to run Lexware on my imac and was told I need bootcamp / parallels for this. Are there any downsides to this?

Hello, I need to run bookkeepting/ bill writing/ store management software on my imac and would like to use Lexware's German product (equivalent of Quickbooks), which can directly link to the German tax autorities. I was told I can do this from my imac via Bootcamp (they dont do a mac version).
Is this advisable and are there any downsides? Is it simple enough? Do I need to be online to use the Lexware software (I live in the deepest countryside with a wobbly connection!).
Thanks a lot for any hints or advice.

There shouldn't be any issues as Boot Camp allows installation of Windows which runs natively just as if you were on a PC. The only downside is that you have to buy a Windows full install disk. Be sure it is the right version for your software.

To answer the obvious question. No. None that I've seen. But it may depend on what you mean exactly?
Connecting to file sharing service - None that I've seen
Connecting to Open Directory (assuming proper configuration) - None that I've seen

I can say the same about anything else the Server may or may not be offering.

  • I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010?

I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Quicbooks Pro 2010 is not responding or opening currently. Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore.  I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?

QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time.
