Running iTunes 1, can I go straight to iTunes 6 and should I backup my musc

The Subject pretty much asks my question...I am running iTunes 1 and wish to upgrade as now I have a photo iPod and would like to include pictures on it. I need atleast iTunes 4 should i / can i go straight to 6 or must i download the in between steps. Also should I back up my current song files or will iTunes automatically load them???

That's a pretty big jump in versions. I would definately back up your iTunes Music Library .xml file. Your music files should be okay, but you might want to back those up as well.
If there's any difference in the formats that version 1 and version 6 use, at some point, some iTunes would have dealt with that. I've been using iTunes since version 1 (in os9) and have done nothing but install the updates as they came out. I've never backed up anything. But, again, that's a pretty big jump.
The big question you should ask yourself is are you worried about your playcounts, etc. If iTunes 6 has any problems locating your library, then you can always direct iTunes to where your music files are stored. I think the worst that could happen would be all your playcounts would be reset to zero.
Here's what I did when I bought my Mini and imported my library from my iBook. I backed up my .xml files from my iBook. Fired up iTunes on my Mini. It started up with no songs in the library. I closed iTunes and looked for the .xml file it created. I then replaced it with the backed up .xml from my iBook. Fired iTunes back up and voila! There was my library.
But if you have any doubts at all then yes, backup everything. But do not forget to back up your iTunes Library .xml file.

  • HT1923 I can´t reinstall itunes. I updated and after downloading the latest version and installing it the error message: "apple aplication support was not found. it is required to run itunes. uninstall and install again. Error 2

I bought an iphone 4s. After plugging it via usb to my computer itunes demanded to update version to 10.3 or higher. I uninstalled itunes, downloaded latest version (11.0.2) and during installation process on "activating services" it shows error message: "installation failed, verify administrator priviliges" which i have because i sign in as my pc administrator. I click on ignore and it tells me itunes has been succesfully instaled but when i try to run it it shows the error message: "apple application support was not found. It is required to run itunes. Uninstall and install itunes again. (which i have done several times) error 2 (windows error 2)." Someone please help me with this problem. Thanks.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • How do i share music libraries between an older Mac running iTunes 4 and a new one running iTunes 11?

I have an older G4 Mac laptop that I use exclusively for playing music.  Trouble is that it's limited to an older system and thus runs iTunes 4.  Much of my music is on my newer machine which runs iTunes 11.x.  I have made certain libraries available for sharing on my newer machine, but cannot see those libraries on the shared list on the older Mac.  How do I get both machines to see each other.  Note: they also do not see each other if I try to Go -> Connect to server -> Browse.  However, they will connect if I type in the address (e.g. afp...) of the machine that I'm trying to connect to.  Anyway, I'm hoping there's some soft of back compatability setting that I've overlooked.

  • Tried to run iTunes update and now my libary is corrupt.

My iTunes was too outdate to sync with my iPod. I couldn't get it to run updates or force an update so I downloaded iTunes again from apple website.  After the download finished I installed new version.  Now iTunes will not open and suggest that I need to run installer again. If I try to run installer it again it asks if I want to remove iTunes even though I'm clicking repair. I'm scared to do too much more with uninstalling etc because I would have to lose my libary.  I do have everything on my iPod so if the libary is a goner is there a way to get it back to iTunes?

Uninstall iTunes and any other components from Apple. Reboot. Reinstall. Your library should be fine...
In the unnlikely event that there is a problem with the library, read on.... (Actually read the bit about backing up anyway!)
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • I just downloaded and installed the 64bit itunes, but I get an error 2 "Apple application support required to run Itunes, uninstall and install again" I did that twice and got the same result

I am a Windows 7 user and everything has been fine, but when I just tried to open itunes I got an Error 2 message. "Apple application support not found. uninstall and install itunes again." I have done that twice with the same result. this was the 64 bit version.

Check this Apple document out -> Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Try following the steps in that article, which will have you remove iTunes and the other bundled Apple software. Then download and install iTunes 10.4.1 for Windows (64 bit).

  • Using 1 External HDD to store iTunes content AND Time Machine Backup

Ok, I don't know a great deal about external hard drives but from what I've read, I'm hoping there's an option to use a 2TB hard drive to store my iTunes content, and as a Time Machine hard drive for backing up. Is this at all possible?
I have an iMac and a MacBook (therefore this would be quite beneficial). If I attach a 2TB hard drive to an AirPort Extreme Base station can I use Time Machine on BOTH computers, linked wirelessly to the one hard drive?
Is it just a matter of partitioning, say, 500GB for storage and the rest (1.5TB) for Time Machine?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ry

The best way is to partition the drive - one for your iTunes and one for TM backups.
Using a drive connected to an AEBS for TM backups is not supported, but it can be done. Use Airport Utility to set up the TM drive and turn on File Sharing. You will have to "mount" the shared drive before you can use it with TM. Same with the partition you would use for iTunes.

  • When I run iTunes 10 and Safari 5.1 for a while my iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo slows down and iTunes grinds to a stop. It seems to be something about my data. The techs couldn't explain it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 2007 iMac slows and freezes while I'm using Safari and iTunes. The iTunes window freezes while music continues to play. Then music can begin stuttering. I have to press the power button to restart becuase I can't access the Apple pull down menu to force quit. The techs I use couldn't figure it out. It seems to be something about my data and not the applications. It's running correctly right now. Does anyone have any suggestions? They would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Itunes 7 and Multi Disk Backup Erroneous Message

iTunes 7 Backup feature gives a completely erroneous message when it completes the 1st of multiple (DVD) disks (tried and it did this twice). Message says backup failed but provides options to "retry", "cancel" or "next". First time I just cancelled. The second time it gave me this Microsoft Windows type message I just put in the 2nd disk (DVD) and it finished copying the next gig of data and finished the DVD and said backup complete. One wonders who was writing, reading or translating the message that should probably have said "insert next disk to continue backup". Has anyone else experienced this message?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

okay. i've seen four or five of these lately. it
seems to be associated with something to do with
external drives and/or drive letter assignments, and
can hit other programs than itunes (according to a
thread i found at the Microsoft Newsgroups).
here's a search on the error code here at
    Discussions:
    c0000013
... are any of the links in the various threads there
of any assistance with your manifestation of this?
Make that six. I am now receiving the exact same error message. My message makes iTunes completely inoperable and there is no way for me to get around it. Yes, I too have external drives attached to my computer. Anyone have advice on how to deal with this exception errort? I hope Apple has fix for us soon.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Can I import my emails from Outlook and  Outlook express backup to Mail

    Hi
I have saved a lot of my emails from when I was using PC, using Outlook. I have since just been using webmail.
I now want to import it into Mail, as I have an imac that I use all the time. Can this be done? If so how, and how easy is it?
Also is there a free way to do it, seen a few progs but have to pay for them.
    cheers

Ah i see, bit of a long winded way but if this is the only way then I'll have to.
I would have thought you ould go from Outlook/Outlook express to Apple mail straight away though?
Anyone else please? surely this must have been done when people became Apple Mac users? from PC users?
    cheers

  • I have a 1 TB hard drive on my Mac and I bought a 1 TB LaCie secondary hard drive. My Mac has lots of capacity left yet my LaCie backup is full and can't back up. I looked and it had backups of years past on it.

It seems that I must have the wrong settings in place but after going through my preferences, I could not find anything that gets rid of older backups. Its as if it is keeping every backup it ever made.

    Tommythinman wrote:
Thanks, I guess I always thought that Time Capsule did everything automatically and seamlessly.
Time Machine (the backup software) does, if it can, but that depends on the circumstances:
(A Time Capsule is a piece of Apple hardware combining a wireless router and hard drive.)
Effective with Snow Leopard (10.6), there's an option on the Time Machine Preferences > Options window to Notify after old backups are deleted.  If that's checked, you might see this message when the disk is nearly full (we don't know just how close it has to be):
Once it is out of room and Time Machine has to delete old backups, it will send this message (after the deletions and new backup are done):
If you don't want to see that anymore, either check the Do not show... box or the Warn after ... box in TM Preferences.  If you don't mind seeing it, just click OK.
If your backups fail with this one, the disk really is full, and TM can't delete enough backups to make room (it won't ever delete the last remaining one, though):
However, if you're on Leopard (10.5), the option is Warn when old backups are deleted and instead of deleting any backups, it sends this one:
Badly worded;  all you have to do is remove the check from the box in TM Prefs > Options; then it will delete old backups as needed.

  • Can't Install iOS4 onto iTouch! And How to Backup?

I have iTouch 3G(8GB). I synced my iTouch yesterday. Took it off the computer then I updated iTunes to iTune9. Then I replugged iPod in and hit the "Check for Updates" and the computer started to download the iOS4 software. Then it "Prepared iPod for Backup" and then "Backing Up iPod". I left it on the computer overnight. And then this morning I got the "Unable to Backup iPod, do you still want to continue? Your library and music may be wiped" message. I hit cancel and now I don't know what to do!!
Also I was reading other people's post and they say something about backing up.. What does that mean? Is it the same thing as syncing and how do you find the backup? Please help; thank you!

My wife and I were able to upgrade by starting the upgrade. When the "Backup" stalled for hours, we "Stopped" the backup, disconnected the iPod Touch, restarted iTunes, reconnected the iPod Touch, did a normal sync so iTunes and iPod Touch were in sync, then did a "Restore". During the restore, skip the "backup" step. The restore proceeded and when done, we had iOS 4.0, and all of our stuff from the most recent sync. This did take awhile (2'ish hours with all the time to restore 32GB of junk), but it did keep moving forward, and we had iOS 4.0, and we had all of our stuff when all was done.
One not nice thing was that there were a few items purchased on the iPod Touch that did not seem to want to sync back to iTunes. Those were lost. In my case it was some music I did not care about.
    Your mileage may vary.
