Running iTunes media from a wireless NAS

I am having a hard time finding a clear answer as to how I can move and play my iTunes media from a wireless NAS. I would really appreciate help anyone can give.
Specifically, here is what I am attempting to do: In order to free up disc space on my laptop I purchased a LaCie Network Space 2 and plugged it into a Linksys e4200 router via ethernet. I then moved the entire "iTunes" folder to the NAS. My particular NAS has three share options, MyShare (Password protected), OpenShare (Publicly accessible to anyone on the network) and USB Share. I put the iTunes folder in NAS/OpenShare/Music/iTunes.
Question 1: Should I have put the entire iTunes folder on the NAS or do I simply need to put the iTunes Media folder on the NAS?
Next I deleted only the iTunes Media folder from my computer, leaving the rest of the iTunes folder intact.
Question 2: Should I have deleted the entire iTunes folder to clear out existing library files?
I then went into iTunes Preferences/Advanced and changed the iTunes Media folder location to NAS/OpenShare/Music/iTunes. Afterward, I dragged the iTunes Media folder from the NAS into iTunes. For some reason only purchased music was copied over. Any ideas what I did wrong?
Also, I have read a lot about iTunes not being able to find the NAS library or defaulting to the iTunes library on the Mac if you start iTunes before the NAS is booted. (ie, I open my laptop and run itunes while the Mac searches for the NAS via wireless)
I would much rather have iTunes take a moment to look for the files while the computer connects to the NAS than default back to the library on my computer.
Lastly, I do have the NAS set up to automatically launch when the computer starts/wakes. (If that makes a difference.)
If anyone could offer a step by step setup explanation I would be very grateful. ****, at this point I'd be happy if someone could just clearly explain what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks.

I seem to have resolved the issue, and of course it turns out it was not the Time Capsule, but the cable router that was causing issues.

  • Restoring iTunes media from backup on network disk.

I backed up my iTunes media from my Powerbook G4 to a hard disk on a PC over my home network. Recently, my Powerbook was stolen and I've now replaced it with a MacBook Pro. How do I restore my iTunes media to the MacBook? iTunes wants me to insert a disc prior to restoring from backup.
    Thanks!

I figured this one out myself! I copied the backup to my MacBook, then found the right folder in the backup to drag into my new iTunes folder. It just took a couple of minutes and I was up and running.

  • How can I access iTunes media from my iPad to my time capsule

How can I access iTunes media from my iPad to my time capsule with out a computer

Really not suitable.. The TC is a dumb hard disk in a router.. it is not a media server..
You can move your itunes library to the TC.. but if you do that.. one day the TC will die and take your library with it.. as well as giving slow response to every network device.. this is really not suitable.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • How do you retrieve iTunes media from many locations to one file

    I have all Mac devices.
The particular item I have a question about is my itunes media file.
Since I have a very large collection, I was advised by apple support to move my Itunes Media folder to the 1.5T wireless WD hard drive I have.
All was going well, until either itunes update occurred or my Macbook Pro OSx had updated that is when I started to notice I have many, many itunes media folders and I want and need to know how to stop this default from occuring and the hardest part is to accumulate all my media that is in itunes media files many on my MacBook Pro in subfolders and on my WD wireless Hard drive that essentially has done the same.
It has produced most cases many, many copies of each of media, and due to the many places that the media got switched to, some items need to be located to play.  Especially Movies.  None of the data is on cell phone, ipad or icloud.  It is mainly conflicts somewhere from files on my Macbook Pro and what is on my WD wireless hard drive. (I only save media on this hard drive)
I have attempted to organize itunes, but it seems to perpetuate the problem.
Is there anyone who knows the best way to find and consolidate media for itunes and place it in one folder.  Is there some App out there that deals ONLY with itunes media consolidating?
    Thanks,
    Tina C.

    What do you mean "retrieve"?
If you mean previously purchased music, then you cannot, unless you are in the U.S. Then you can use the recently released icloud ( beta version).
    Tap itunes, then tap purchasd

  • How do I access my iTunes media from an external hard drive?

I have a new MacBook Air and want to access my media files from an external drive. I previously had a MacBook Pro and had to move all media to an external drive because I ran out of space. I've tried launching iTunes, going to Preferences, going to the Advanced Tab and then moving the location to the external drive and got this question: Would you like iTunes to move and rename the files in your new iTunes Media folder to match the “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” preference? Should I say yes? If I say yes, will iTunes be able to automatically find my files on the external drive?

hey, basically i had the same problem as you. i had all of my itunes on an external hard drive and just bought a macbook pro, so here is what i was told to do....plug in the external hard drive to your MBA and then when you open itunes hold down the option button while you click and hold it down till you see a pop up window, it will ask you what library you want to use, click choose library and choose the itunes file that is on your external hard drive. and then all of your stuff will be in the itunes.
what i have seemed to run into though is, when the external hard drive isn't plugged in itunes won't open unless you choose another library or plug in the external hard drive. - my question is this, should i open another library on my macbook pro's internal hard drive so i can at least look at itunes when i don't have my external hard drive connected. my old macbook did this, it would point to another library on my macbook and i would still be able to see all of my media but couldn't play it without the external hooked up, is there a way to do this on lion?
i hope i was able to answer your question sam and hopefully can have my question answered too.
    thanks!
    - sorry sam, don't mean to hijack your thread but hopefully it will help us both - i don't want to store any media )movies, music, podcasts, apps, any of that stuff on my macbook pro's hard drive, so say there is a way to get itunes to open without my external hooked up and i can still see my media, or not see my media and i want to download a song or a app that i see when i am not near my external....what is the easiest way to get that file onto the external and not have it taking up space on my macbook pro's hard drive? sorry for all the long questions

  • How to move itunes library from winXP to NAS drive

Can someone point me to a location that has intructions on how to offload
my Itunes library from my XP PC to my IOMEGA media center NAS drive? I've
searched quite a bit and haven't been able to find a comlete set of intructions
yet. Just trying to free up disk space on my desktop. It gets a bit confusing sometimes when they mention music files and library files. To me, they are one in the same, but I think they are not. Would be nice if there was a flow chart of
how Itunes works and what each file component does. You know, like the difference between an .itl file and a .xml file?

First of all I still don't know how to post a question. There is nothing in here that asks me to do so. Therefore I can only reply to one already asked. My problem is that I followed the instructions in iTunes which tell me how to move the files from the C Drive to another location (which happens to be my D Drive). After doing that it then tells me to drag the old files into the recycle bin, however, it won't comply and tells me that the procedure can't be performed because of copywrite protections. Where do I go from here? Or at the very least, how do I post a question in this forum the normal way?

  • I'm trying to get my itunes media from two different PCs onto my iPhone

After purchasing media from iTunes (same iTunes account) on two different computers (1x Win Vista desktop and 1x Win XP laptop), is there a way to get all of this media onto my iPhone (3GS)? I was very dissapointed to see that you can only sync one computer at a time which surprised me because usually Apple products are a lot more user friendly and from my humble experience, I have generally found Apple products to just make since although this problem is seriously aggravating. I am trying to get all of the media that I bought on my laptop (Win XP) to sync with my iPhone (3GS) but since I have already been syncing with my desktop (Win Vista), it wants to erase everything that I already had on my phone, including invaluable photos that I have taken of my children and media that I have purchased on the phone itself. This process has already deleted all of the music that I purchased on my phone (I am assuming that I can't get this music back or at least the music that wasn't backed up yet to my desktop). Is there anyway to get all of my media onto this phone and keep the media that is on my phone already or should I just go back to using my HTC Tilt since it has proven to be a lot more user friendly? One would think that Apple would appreciate you purchasing media from iTunes anywhere that you could but it seems that Apple penalizes you for purchasing from iTunes from more than one computer. I have tried to access my iPhone through the "my computer" folder on my Win XP laptop but my iPhone does not show up in this folder (although it does show up in my Vista desktop "my computer" folder). Can anyone please point me in the right direction to find a solution as this problem has been extremely frustrating. I would very much appreciate all the help that anyone could give.

Will iTunes allow me to do this? I'm not really all that familiar with Windows computers. I have recently had to move to a PC because my $3000 macBook Pro died one month after the warranty was up. How could I get iTunes to accept media from another computer?

  • How do I run HD Media from an External Hard Drive?

I have a Macbook Pro, with Final Cut 7. I'm editing clips in HD shot with Canon 7d. I have a 250GB external Hard Drive. How do I set it up as my "Scratch Disk" and able to run all the media I'm editing from there too (for Playback, ect). And in the end is it going to effect how I export it for YouTube or anything?

I don't know how to pull media from the hard drive to edit with.
File>Import. Or drag the media from the scratch drive (after you copy it there from wherever) into your project.
But you are specifically talking about Canon DSLR footage. These files aren't huge...they are pretty small in fact. But what they are is a codec that isn't editable. You need to convert these to ProRes, THEN edit. You can use the Canon DSLR plugin for FCP to Log and Transfer them (therefore putting them onto your Capture Scratch), or use Clipwrap or MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert them to ProRes. Google "Canon 5D and Final Cut Pro" and find the wealth of people talking about this.

  • How do I run iTunes completely from my external hard drive?

    Here's my dilemma:
My laptop's internal C: hard drive is busting with data - it's full.  So in an effort to simplify and create space, I bought a 1TB external hard drive (F: drive) and moved all of my media, including iTunes, over to it for simplicity and the sake of freeing up space on my C drive.
I have pointed iTunes successfully to the Media folder on the external drive.  What's more, when I download through iTunes, all media is successfully saved to the external drive.  So far, so good.
HOWEVER, try as I might, iTunes keeps creating new library files under the C drive regardless of what I do.  Secondly, I downloaded a movie, which was saved to the external drive correctly, but created a copy on the C drive which I did NOT want.  Lastly, when I transferred an app from my iPad (where I purchased and downloaded the app) to my computer, it copied the app to the C drive which, again, I did not want.
Basically, I'm trying to organize and consolidate all iTunes media files onto JUST THE EXTERNAL DRIVE for simplicity and to remove the confusion of unnecessary duplication, but iTunes refuses to cooperate.
    Any help?!
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

That's not the way to do it. Instead of moving it yourself, you should let iTunes consolidate the new location.
HOWEVER, try as I might, iTunes keeps creating new library files under the C drive regardless of what I do.
You need to ensure the external is on, mounted and ready before launching iTunes.
Basically, I'm trying to organize and consolidate all iTunes media files onto JUST THE EXTERNAL DRIVE for simplicity and to remove the confusion of unnecessary duplication, but iTunes refuses to cooperate.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
Hold Shift tand launch iTunes, select Choose library and select the iTunes folder you moved to the external.
    Delete the original /Music/iTunes/ folder.
If you launch iTunes and the exxternal is not ready, you will have an empty iTunes library.
Quit iTunes, make sure the external is ready.
Hold Shift tand launch iTunes, select Choose library and select the iTunes folder on the external.

  • I moved my itunes media from one external hard drive to another. How do I change the shortcut on my desktop to open to the new external hard drive?

Ok, so i originally installed itunes on an external hard drive (G drive) and not my PC. So my itunes runs completely from my external and that how I like it. Well over time it got full so I bought and moved all my media over to a bigger 2TB external hard drive (D drive). I verified that all the media (music, movies, tv show etc) are all on the new drive and everything points to it. However the itunes shortcut on my desktop still points to the G drive external. If I unplug it and try to open itunes it gives me an error. So I have to keep the G external drive plugged in just to launch itunes and then use my new D external to get the media. How the heck do I change that? I tried moving the itunes.exe file over to the new drive but that didnt work. I want it to run exclusively off the new D external. Please Help Me!!! I am using Win 7 if that helps.

  • I want to install new Apple TV which can receive iTunes media stored in a NAS device connected to my router.  I would like to use both a PC and a Mac to manage this.  Is that possible?

I guess the real question is can a single drive in the NAS be shared by both a PC and a Mac.  I plan to access the network from both the PC and mac wrelessly but will ust CAT5 between Apple TV and router.

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

I purchased a new computer and now all of my music from the old one no where to be found in Itunes, How do I retrieve my music since I now have a new computer?

Restore it from a backup, or transfer it from the old computer, or use these instructions to redownload it through the iCloud if doing so is free in your country.

  • Is it possible to run iTunes playlist from external program?

I'd like to set up reminders in a planner program so that they open various playlists in iTunes. Is this possible, even though the playlists are buried in the library? I know I can do it with Windows Media Player, but I'd so rather not.

Oh, bummer. Would be much more convenient if I could just use iTunes for everything. Can't stand WMP. I wonder if WinAmp might be a good compromise?
