Running iTunes within a WinXP guest system on Linux host

Since I don't think Apple will release a Linux iTunes version I am thinking about running WinXP as a guest on a Linux host (VMware). Could I safely use iTunes within this virtual machine, buy songs from the iTunes Store,... or would the digital rights management of iTunes fail to run in such a guest system?
Thanks!

I'm trying to do much the same by using VirtualBox on Ubuntu 7.10 (easier to setup networking than VMWare). I haven't bought anything from the Apple Store but I do know that importing CDs though a virtual WinXp doesn't seem to work with iTunes. Other CD/DVDROM apps seems to work OK.
So there may be some fundamental problem with trying to virtualise iTunes.
I know it doesn't work under WINE or CROSSOVER.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk

There is no built in function to make this happen.
    Your options are:
    Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system.

  • Is it possible for a guest system to spy host system when using virtual maschine?

    Hi all,
I want to prepare virtual maschine which will be used to connect through vpn with one of my clients. There are some other programs and devices that I have to install in order all of this to work. However there is a security concern. On host system I've mailbox and other stuff from my corporation. Is there any way
that guest system will successfully try in any way to monitor what is happening on host system (for example by reading emails, checking network trafic, doing screenshots and so on)?
    any help appreciated

  • How to listen to iTunes through two separate stereo systems simultaneouly?

I was thinking of buying two Airport Express units in order to run iTunes to two seperate stereo systems in two different rooms. Can this be done, or is there a better way to accomplish this?
    thanks for any help!
    pjo
    iMac G4, 800 Mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Pjo,
Yes, you can listen to iTunes through two separate stereo systems simultaneously. The current version of iTunes allows you to stream your music to multiple Airport Express units. At the bottom of iTunes, where the different Airport Express units' names are listed, there is a "Multiple Speakers..." option; select this to choose from one or more of your units.
    Hope this helps.

  • Feedback on XP Pro (guest OS) installation under VMware 5.5 on Linux host.

I successfully installed 10g XE on XP Pro (32 bit - with service pack 2 ) guest OS under Linux host (RedHat 4.0 ES - update 2).
The initial attempt was unsuccessful because of the MS Antivirus program (as some suggested on this forum). I then shutdown the listener service from command line, cleaned the registry for oracle entries (oci.dll was used by some application - I found it was Microsoft Transaction Server), then removed the oracleXE directory , set the oracle listener service to manual start (in services window), and then rebooted the machine. When logged back in, verified that the listener was not up, stopped the antivirus program and then reinstalled 10g XE. This time the installation was successful.
Realized the sys and system password is the same and by using the sql command tool as sys, you can create new tablespaces, new users, etc. (I could not find any other way to create a new tablespace or adding a new datafile to the existing users tablespace , from within the html_db based administration tool. I am a DBA, so I used the command line from the "Run SQL command line" icon (link). It displayed the SQL> prompt and then I connected as sysdba.
Next week, I will try installing 10g XE, on a Linux virtual machine (guest) running on XP 64 bit host. I will update this posting then...
    I hope this proves useful.

    Understood.
I will just create a simple document for our end users explaining and including related sql scripts - or better yet - I will configure, install XE on Linux to a specific directory and then do a cold backup - make a bzipped tar file to distribute to the customer (I know this type of distribution/installation is not supported but it is working and tested with Forms 6i c/s runtime with proper patchset). This is why I will support the XE Linux version only - you don't have to deal with the "registry".
For our application XE will serve real well - for a simple scenario creation, they can use XE and Forms 6i C/S runtime on Linux. If they want to use our real time game support which will populate the data in close-to-real time and uses iAS EE forms services, then they need the install standard edition.
I will update with Linux VMware virtual machine installation feedback as soon as I finish installing.

Hi there, i had the exact same problem and posted a thread a few above yours, and these forums wasnt much help nobody replied, so i did a bit of research and followed all the intructions on this site: http://www.gearsoftware.com/cfknowledgebase/articledisplay.cfm?articleid=296
If you follow the steps very carefully and do as each says, this will solve your problem.. Now i am very happy i can actually install iTunes and use it for my iPod.
Remember to be carefully with the steps as the things you will be deleting are very important to your comp.

  • Is there a way to run iTunes on startup minimized directly to the system tray?

Ive been trying to tweak registry and even created a .bat file in order to fix this but still not working.
Since iOS 5 can sync wirelessly, is there a way to run iTunes on windows startup minimized directly to the system tray?
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Correction...
It's a bit of a kludge, but copy the following two lines and paste into an empty Notepad window. Click Save As, change the Save as file type to All files and call the script MinimiTunes.vbs. Place the script or a shortcut to it into your startup group. iTunes will still open as full screen but will minimize shortly thereafter.
    Set iTunes=CreateObject("iTunes.Application")
    iTunes.Windows.Item(1).Minimized=True
Alternatively, download the script MinimiTunes from my site.

  • When using Apple TV, is the system running iTunes forced to handle the media?

I've got an Apple TV, a PC running iTunes with Home Sharing turned on, and a NAS (network attached storage) device. All of the iTunes content (music, movies, etc.) is stored on the NAS. When I first set up the Apple TV, everything worked well. I recall watching a movie (stored on the NAS) on the apple tv and seeing little to traffic on the PC's network card. i.e. the apple tv had (apparently?) determined where the movie was located and pulled the content direct from the NAS. Note: the apple tv and PC are both connected to the network wirelessly but the NAS is hard-wired to the switch/wireless access point.
Flash forward a few months (and a number of ATV updates) and the apple tv has been running VERY slowly to the point where it's essentially unusable. It works fine for NetFlix or YouTube or other content coming from the Internet but can't pull and present any local media.
I've wiped the apple tv unit and set it back up. I've wiped iTunes (full uninstall and removed original library) and had it re-find all of the media. I now even have the media location referenced as \\server\share\path\file instead of <drive letter>:\path\file
But it is still running horribly. After some more checking, I now see that when I'm asking the Apple TV to access media from the NAS, the PC's network card is working furiously. For some reason, it appears the PC is being forced to pull the content from the NAS and then forward it to the ATV. This is terribly inefficient and is making a mess of what was an otherwise great media center experience.
Anyone have any thoughts? If this setup never worked, I think I'd be fine. But the fact that it once worked the way I expected it to but now doesn't is very frustrating. Obviously, the PC needs to be involved upfront to share the catalog and notify the player where the files are located. But, after that, it should be able to step out of the picture (no pun intended) and let everything work.

I'm not surprised at the 50-60% (if that's when it's working ok) as AppleTV will take the media stream faster than the rate it needs to play back.
Are you maybe playing HD now and SD in the past?
    AC
Nope.  Made sure the PC was nice and quiet and off of a fresh cold start.
As for the SD/HD question - no to that as well.  The content hasn't changed.  Same files on the same NAS.
Posted my question to facebook last night to see if my friends had any thoughts.  I was surprised to hear that two other friends with ATVs had pretty much the same problem I was describing (worked great after initial setup but slowed down considerably recently).  And they both experienced the issue around the same time (starting about a month ago).
One fixed it by resetting the ATV and setting it back up again.  That hasn't worked for me.  My other friend said the problems cleared up after adding iTunes as an allowed application in Windows firewall.  So I'll see if I can fiddle with some settings there.  Don't recall there being too many options but it's at least an avenue of attack.  I'll report back if I learn anything.

  • HT1222 I was trying to run ITunes 10.7 update on my Mac Pro with Retina display but the message appeared "An error has occurred" so I can proceed with the update. I dont' see any other messages. Any ideas what could go wrong?

I was trying to run ITunes 10.7 update on my Mac Pro with Retina dispaly but "An error has occurred" and I was not able to proceed with the update. The message says "The operation was cancelled. (3072)." I have no other messages. Any ideas why I cannot install this update

Scott's solution fixed the problem.  It would have been helpful if the update message in the App Store had reported that.  I had first tried B Noir's solution -- and received a helpful warning message that a guest user was still logged in to iTunes.  I switched over, logged the guest user out, switched back and the update within the App store worked perfectly.
It seems to me that Apple should invest a little time and effort in making their error/warning messages easier to decipher.  I have to come to the forum every time something happens.  Why not simply have a dialogue window that opens up to explain the most likely issues?

  • 10.6.7 Freezes when attempting to run iTunes 10.2.1

I have just updated to 10.6.7 all Apps (e.g. Mail, Safari, Parallels) tried so far work fine except iTunes. Every time I run iTunes 10.2.1 I get as far as the window displaying correctly then within 20secs the machine freezes and is unresponsive to anything other than a forced shutdown via the power button. I have fixed disk permissions with the same result.
Anyone else experiencing the same? Any suggestions as to a fix?

It's a check to ensure that you can reinstall iTunes 10.2.1 in 10.6.6, since you can't in 10.6.7. Then, try installing the 10.6.7 COMBO update. If that also breaks iTunes, then if you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Anyone have experience running iTunes off of a NAS instead of their machine?

I recently installed a 4T NAS and would like to actually run iTunes off of it since the music takes up too much space on my MacBook Pro hard drive.  I moved the folder to the NAS successfully and pointed iTunes to it.  I also Organized the Library, but I am unable to make playlists or any edits.

    hi,
thanks for your reply, i am going in on the guest account but i can access all the files, the buffalo is set up on a new folder for all the itunes/images and a seperate folder for time machine .
we have 4 terrastations at work and i have learnt intranet type scenarios through using these,
if apple/buffalo cant sort this issue soon ,i will need to buy a time capsule to back up my time machine , spending money where it should not be needed is a right pain but i need to back up,
i will contact buffalo and try to get some sense out of them on the afp issue but , they are only helpfull up to a point and always deflect the issue back to apple as the "fixer".
I have never taken out one 2 one or apple care on any of our systems and have learnt as i go along,
Is the hack going to effect my gaurentee  on the buff NAS ?

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes & Disk Utility - Recognized by System Profile

I have a 40GB iPod Clickwheel (4th Gen?) that i'm trying to fix back to life since my mini was just stolen and i'm out on the road on tour all the time. my iPod actually powers up by itself just fine, the battery life is just peachy, and it can run independently without songs (i'm able to look around just as though i had songs on there - i can play games, alter settings, etc etc.).
    However, there's a few things i've noticed!
When i go to the iPod's about menu (when disconnected from the computer), it shows there's no songs, that there's 0 capacity, 0 available - shows that the version is 3.1.1, the serial and model numbers, but the format is unknown.
I've tried plugging the dang thing into my computer to much avail - IF iTunes recognizes it, it says it needs to be restored -- GREAT! so i try to restore the iPod, however, i almost instantly get an error: The iPod cannot be restored because it is currently busy. When i clicked the help tag, it says it's a common problem in iTunes 7.0 - great, i have 8.0.2; and i've tried running everything from a restart on the ipod to a restart on the computer, updating all my system files, running the iPod in disk mode, etc, but nothing seems to make it want to restore.
when i look in system profiler; it shows that the iPod is hooked up to my USB port (which is just fine, and i've never had problems running a click-wheel iPod through that before); however both Disk Utility and iTunes do not acknowledge it's existence. what gives?
is my iPod a goner? how would i go about restoring this so i can use it? I've tried it on my Power PC (Specs below) as well as trying it on an iBook and iMac; with the same results every time. i know it's not the cable, because the iPod actually charged via that cable last night!
    any help!?

If you can get it to show up in Disk Utility, try reformatting (erasing) it in Disk Utility. If that process completes without stalling or errors, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. Immediately attempt to do another Restore to install the iPod's software and initialize.
If the iPod does not erase successfully (it should take less than one minute for a standard erase) in Disk Utility, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty.

  • I am havign huge problems getting itunes 11.1.4 working on my windows 7 laptop. I have run itunes for some years, and regularly updated it when prompted. I have followed many of the suggestions e.g. uninstalling reinstalling, etc

I have spent hours trying to get itunes working on my laptop.
The only functinoality I crave is to be able to get pictures off my iphone 5 (which has the latest ios installed.), as almost all other functinoality of itunes I find painful beyond belief. It has the worst ergonomics I think of any software I have ever used, which is bizarely at odds with the mobile decvices, which by and large work quite nicely (indeed, why I bought them!)
My laptop runs windows 7. It has all the latest microsoft updates installed (I am religious about this: it always has had.)
I have run itunes on this machine for some years, regularly updating when I am prompted to.
A few days back i was prompted to update to 11.1.4
It failed to install badly. whatever I try at some point during the install process the installer just hangs, or never terminates.
All communication between computer and iphone functionality has been lost.
Nothing eles on my machine is behaving oddly. slowly etc. it is only apple stuff that isn't working.
I googled and found a lot of recurring themes on apple forums:
    So far I have tried:
uninstalling / reinstalling. (hangs during installation).
Restarting the machine between uninstall and reinstall.
Searching and removing any directories/ contents related to apple, after the uninstall, prior to machine reboot.
I have even used iobit uninstaller, as removing apple software as you know is almost impossible (ever tried disabbling the quicktime updater that runs at startup? it's like a virus !!)
I have removed all apple software incl quicktime.
I have tried the microsoft software installer fixit link often posted to.
i have tried unpacking the apple installation file, using the latest version of winrar, to try installing one at a time.
I have found the installation is very very very slow (it looks as though it hangs, but i leave it running in the background, after 15-20 minutes, the status starts advancing for example). so far I have managed to install the first few components up to applesoftware  update, msi, and they seem to need to be run multiple times.
(this last one took about 40 minutes).
I have been very careful to install / uninstall the software components int eh "prescribed" order.
I have tried each step multiple times, rebooting the machine numerous times, cleaning temp folders (with ccleaner) etc.
I ave tried installing when my virus checker AVG is disabled.
(i have virus checked the machine with AVG and malware bytes, I have the latest microsft security essential updates installed.)
I ahve tried stopping apple services (as suggested in one of the apple forum posts).
As you can gather I'm seriously tearing my hair out.
I presume there is some kind of generic bug in this installer: as a friend had exactly the same problem on sunday night, with a different machine, running windows 7, and a couple of her colleagues at work has had the self same problem over the weekend, though none of them seem to have gone to the lengths I have yet !
I tried doing a system restore, but my machine seems to have lunched all previous system restore points, so I can't . Arrrrrgggg !
Is an older version of itunes available so i can install that instead ?
What should I do next ?

When I connect the phone to the computer with iTunes running, iTunes says it can't connect to the device because it didn't get a valid response from the device. How can I get the system to recognize the phone, and let me rename it as my iPod, instead of my phone?
As an aside, the current installed operating system on this old iPhone is 4.2.1, but that wasn't one of the selectable options in the operating system list dropdown below. Don't know if that makes any difference.
