Running Large Backups over an MPLS Network

We are opening up a second data center at my organization. The location is about 60 miles from our primary data center.
At our primary data center we use an MPLS network for our WAN. We have ll remote locations on our WAN and we have a DS-3 that connects to our primary data center.
At our new second data center we will connect it to the MPLS network.
Do you think we should run our backups between the 2 data centers across the MPLS or do you think we should order a seperate private line or ethernet type service between the 2 data centers? All back ups from our primary data center will continually move across the network to our new secondary data center.
Do you think MPLS is a good technology to run large back ups across? Is it reliable enough

"Do you think MPLS is a good technology to run large back ups across?"
Sure.
"Is it reliable enough"
Depends more on your MPLS provider than the technology itself.
Two issues that may be more important to you vs. how "reliable" MPLS is, might be cost of bandwidth vs. other technologies or sharing the MPLS bandwidth with non-backup applications. The latter would depend much on what QoS that might be available to you to insure your backup traffic doesn't adversely impact non-backup traffic.

  • MPLS over non-MPLS network

    A Chairde,
I am nearly sure the answer is no, but will ask anyway.
I want to connect two private networks over a corporate WAN , and am looking to keep the router traffic (BGP) and routing traffic under control.
I only have control of the two lab routers, the routers in middle are controlled by IT dept. , is there anyway of setting up MPLS with this scenario ???
    Any other suggestions ......

You could indeed run MPLS over a GRE interface.
If you want to run MPLS VPN, then I would suggest configuring MPLS VPN over l2tpv3. See the following URL for more details:

  • Running ISQL Plus over a home network

I have a small wireless home network (3 machines), and installed Oracle 10g on one machine. ISQL works fine on this machine. However, I would like to be able to run queries from the other machines using ISQL PLUS.
Have tried, //<<machinename>>:5560/isqlplus, but this returns a message that the requested page cannot be found.
I’ve pinged the database host machine from a second machine: ping <<machine name>>, and got a reply but when I pinged the port on the host machine: Ping <<machine name>>:5560, I got no reply. How do I solve communication with this port.
    Any assistance appreciated.
    JH

Ping <>:5560, I got no reply.Pinging port is not possible. Btw you can't use somthing what is using ICMP protocol (ping) for testing of TCP connection. So use the telnet command for testing of connection.

    Dear all,
I have taken a 512k link from mpls network containing juniper as core routers, while i am using completely cisco in my network, my query is can i priortize my voice and video traffic over this mpls network i am also using rtp header compression.

    hi
if i m not wrong there will be different kinda service offering in general being provided by the SPs.
it falls under 2 main major categories one is managed and the other is unmanaged.
in managed services your SP will honour the marking being done by the customers and the same is being carried throughout(in SP backbone) till reaching the remote destination.
in unmanaged services whatever markings you do at ur end will be remarked or ignored by SP according to the policies followed by them.
you can enquire about this with your SP and you can have the QOS policies configured accordingly.

  • Venturing into MPLS Network

Hi all, it is just my curiousity that ended up with a small discussion like this. Here's about it...
My company has a main client which have tonnes of remote sites connecting to both their HQ and Disaster Recovery Centre. Some of the remote sites still running on frame-relay, while other is purely leased-line. There's a few question I wish I can clear up as follows:
    i. When the client have frame-relay device, what we do is create a tunnel and route all the frame-relay traffic over. Is there any advantage if we change it over to MPLS?
ii. Even if comparing to leased-line services, what kind of advantages I can expect if our cliet migrate over to leased-line?
iii. If one customer is running purely on frame-relay connectivity, any difficulties will arise when they want to switch over to MPLS network?
I still never has any hands on experience on the MPLS, that's why need to gather some info in the first place, I'm currently have a glance through those MPLS guides and configuration examples, but I knew that perhaps in real-life network, things may differs, in the meanwhile I'm studying through it, hope to gather some precious opinions. Regards

    Hello,
Regarding answer iii: What you have to use inside the MPLS cloud is MBGP to route the customer prefixes. In your LAN however you will have an IGP like EIGRP. This means you need mutual redistribution between MBGP and your IGP. So a routing loop can occur once you have at least two pathes. An Example:
    N1-CE1 - PE1 - PE2 - CE2
    with: CE1 - PE1 using RIP, CE2 - PE2 using RIP, PE1 - PE2 using MBGP and a FR PVC between CE1 - CE2 using RIP
This would be the case when you migrate from FR to MPLS VPN and do not shut down FR the very moment you activate the MPLS links.
What can happen in this scenario is: CE1 is announcing Network N1 through RIP to CE2 directly over the FR PVC and also to PE1. PE1 will redistribute N1 into MBGP, send the prefix to PE2, which will redistribute N1 into RIP and send the update to CE2.
Now depending on implementation and metrics this will result in all traffic flowing over FR or MPLS (when adjusting metrics). No major problem yet.
The problem might occur once CE1 looses network N1. It will send an update directly to CE2 and to PE1 and a race condition exists. CE2 will still have one valid path to N1 learned from PE2 and announce this one to CE1, which will announce it to PE1 and then PE2, CE2, CE1 again and so on.
This is an intermittend or even persistent routing loop, depending on what you have done with hop count during redistribution.
By designing your overall routing solution carefully you can avoid this scenario.
Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

  • Debugging and monitoring MPLS networks

    Hi ,
I've had the following problem with a customer of ours and I'd like to know if there's any tools I can use in the future to better diagnose the problem if it may arise again.
The customer is a bank with hundreds of brnach sites. All of them are connected to the corporate via a MPLS network managed by a local TELCO company .
In the last ten days they have experienced long delays during logons of users in the branch sites . This delay has been initially thought due to new operating systems deployed on the clients ( XP ) . In fact there's a rollout of XP computers at all the branch sites .
Trying to troubleshoot the problem we have started looking at all OS related known problems but found nothing important.
Next I tried looking at the network connections with the few tools I have ( basically ping , traceroute and protocol analyzer ) but all seemed ok .
Having no access to the telco routers I monitored the corporate's switch ports to which the two telco router are attched .
Finally I found some packet discarded and could call the telco and having the routers checked.
They found a problem , they didn't told us what it was , and suddendly most of the problems were gone.
This was really tricky because a part from the slow logon we had no other mulfunctions . I found the problem thanks to a Microsoft tool to check group policy problem which point me to possible networks problem.
The question , after this long post , is ; is there any tool, agent , software I can install or use to check MPLS network efficiency having no access to the TELCO routers ?
    Thanks in advance

havent not told us what the actual problem was it is kinda difficult to suggest tools. However IF this was an MTU issue then you should have used ping with the DF bit set to see how big a packet you could get over the mpls network. Let us know what the issue was and hopefully we can be a bit more detailed in our responses.

  • Full mesh VPN solution for on MPLS network with PE and CPEs

    Hi,
We are trying to evaluate some best solution for Hub-Spoke mesh vpn solution in a MPLS network. The VPN hub router will be in PE router and all the VPN spoke will be in CPE.
Can someone please let us know what will be the best vpn solution, we understands that there will be some technical limitations going with GETVPN but still we did counld find any documenation for possiblity of using DMVPN.
How about the recent flexvpn, can fex-vpn work on this requirement, where can i get a design/configuration document.?
    thanks in advance.

    Hello,
GetVPN is intended for (ANY-to-ANY) type of VPN communication, over an MPLS network with Hub and Spoke Topology, your best Option is to look for Cisco (DMVPN) implementation where this type of VPN is primarily designed for Hub & Spoke.

  • Backup over Network Connection

A little background: My main home computer is an older Dell with a CD-RW drive (no DVD-RW capabilities) and has the main iTunes Music folder on it. My wife has a Toshiba laptop with a DVD-RAM drive. Both computers are connected through a secure wireless home network and I have set up the main iTunes Music folder to be shared between the two computers, but mainly for copying purposes. Since my wife doesn't like all of my music, I created a separate iTunes Music folder on her laptop hard drive (also so she can have access to music while at work and not connected to the home network). Both machines are running XP SP2 and iTunes 7.1.
I would like to back up the main library (Dell) to a DVD-RW because of the larger storage space but can't b/c of only having a CD-RW drive on the Dell. Is there a way to back up the iTunes Library on the Dell via the laptop's DVD-RAM drive over the wireless network? Any info and tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Andrew
    Dell Windows XP

    Hi there,
Essentially, as far as I know, what you are asking is improbable.
Buring a DVD is a very data flow sensitive process, such that any loss of data flow (say a short drop out of the wireless) would render the DVD being burnt physically useless.
Again, as far as I know, there is no software that supports this specifically, and although it might be possible to hack up a solution, it would be difficult if not impossible to get working reliablly.
Your best bet is to temporarily copy afore mentioned music to the Laptops hard drive, and then burn from there.

  • Initial TM backup direct to drive, future backups over network?

We have two MacBook Pros running 10.5 and would like to use Time Machine to back them up over our wireless network using and external HD connected to our Airport Extreme. Is it possible to run the initial backups directly to the drive over its firewire 800 connection and later connect the drive to the AEBS for future TM backups?

I've done it. Did 2 initial backups to external firewire hard drive, then hooked the same drive to an airport extreme via its USB 2 port. TIme machine recognizes the backups for each respective machine and uses them. It was very easy.

  • I can't backup to iCloud over my wifi network but I can over other wifi networks

Several days ago, I noticed that I am no longer able to backup my iPhone 5 over my wifi network. It tries to backup for a while and then says "The last backup was unable to be completed." I figured it was a bug with iOS 6 so didn't really worry about it. Then I was at my girlfriend's house and was able to backup my phone to iCloud over her wifi network. Does anyone know why I can backup on hers but not mine? Also strange that I was able to backup on my network at first and then suddenly stopped being able to. Thanks for your help!

I am having the same issue, mine stoipped working on October 4th.  I am running mountain lion and I phone 5.  I do not know what the issue is at all.  Have a brand new macbook pro retina 15.  Not sure what the issue is but I hope someone can help us both.

    thx in advance

    Hello Marcus
I went to the link which you mentioned and there is nothing mentioned about hot to give rights to the user NTAUTHORITY\SYSTEM  in order to do network backup.
    I have done the following:
at server A which i my backup server i have a folder which i have it shared with full permissions for everyone.
At the SECURITY there is also full rights for everyone and for local admins.
From Server B i went to services and i stoped the SQL SERVER service and i set it up to log on with a user which has Administrator rights in the DOMAIN.
From server B i logged on with administrator and i defined at the SQL Server Management Studio at Server Objects -> Backup devices a new backup device with the network path.
The thing is that i have to go with windows explorer to the network location of where i want to do backup in order to put my domain username and password and after i can run the backup by the SQL Server Management Studio.
Do you know where do i need to give authority to NTAUTHORITY\SYSTEM in order for my backup to work from the SAP - DBACOCKPIT?
    thx in advance.

The problem is that when the tunnel fails for cpe 1 then it fails for CPE 2 exactly the same time.
    Any advice.
    Thanks

    Hi my friend,
I didnt know about that command and the purpose you use that  but I was searching a bit. Do you use that command for
normal GRE tunnels?  This is not a point to multipoint topology and every tunnel is a point to point and I run ospf for the point to point link is is differnet area than the other tunnel. Do you beleive that its still could be related to the tunnel key?
Many thanks fo ryour advice. Please reply at your erliest convenience
I know it looks like hub and spoke or point to miltipoint but does it actually dehave like that?

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
That's a problem writing to the NAS drive.
But the backup continued after all this.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.
