Running latest update renders ipod unrecognisable in XP

Iopd was working fine with speakers but not available in itunes (although it was recognised by windows XP). I did all the suggested tweaks from the web eg. toggling, reseting, then installed latest itunes and updater. I ran the updater but then the ipod got the dreaded folder with exclamation mark. Now updater only has option to restore! and the ipod won't even work just as music player. I've updated it out of existence. But my suspician is that the files might still be there. Any ideas on this?

7 GB is on the low side, you really should have minimum 15GB.
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.Have yo tried:

  • What is the latest update for ipod 4g

i want to know what the latest update for ipod 4g

Update 6.1.3 is the latest and will be the last!

  • Start page says I am not running latest update when I am!

Every time I start Firefox there is a message to say I am not running the latest version and to update now.
However, if I go to the Help tab to check, I am told that I am up to date.
    How do I resolve this?

    Which "Start Page"?
This - http://www.google.com/firefox - is the old Firefox Start Page used by the Firefox 3.6 and earlier versions of Firefox, I don't think it is being maintained by Google.
Starting with the Firefox 4 version, Firefox is using a "local" Start Page with the address of '''about:home'''. It looks similar to the old Start Page, but it isn't exactly the same.

  • After the latest update my iPod nano 7th gen only plays/shows 261 of 849 songs from my main playlist, but they're definitely all on it.

I have a favorite playlist, where're all songs in I rated with 5 Stars. It's 849 songs big. After the latetst update (1.0.3) the count under the playlist's name on the iPod says there're only 261 songs in and when I scroll through, the list really ends way too early.
But if I use the iPod's tab "Songs" I can find every song that's synced with the iPod, even the missing songs from my favorite list.
Also under the tab "on this iPod" on iTunes the favorite list seems complete.

Oh, Bluetooth also daoesn't work anymore!
Thanks for this great update, that causes problems where everything worked fine before!

    Hello Jane Benstock,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
It sounds like the next best step to take would be to reset the iPod Shuffle.

now before i updated the latest update all was fine..
ive since put my libary back as is stored on external hard drive and reset ipod and added libary back to ipod
but still the same as dicribed above.
now i connected my wifes iphone 4s to itunes went to file/devices hey presto itunes reconised it as eg wifes iphone
    but dosnt do for ipod..
    any ideas cheers.

Normally a greyed out Wifi is a hardware failure, but with some of the problems I've seen with the upgrade to iOS 4 on 3G phones, I'm not convinced the problem/problems aren't related to software. I have two suggestions, neither of which are guaranteed to work: 1. Restore your phone as a "new" device in itunes & not from backup. But first delete any and all .ipsw files on your computer. This will force itunes to re-download the current OS. The .ipsw file can be found here:
    OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    XP: C:\Documents and Settingsusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    7 & Vista: C:\Usersusername\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
You may have to turn on "show all hidden files" to find them.
Once done, reboot your computer, launch itunes, connect your phone & restore as "new". When finished, DO NOT SYNC, rather eject your phone & see if all is working properly. If it is, sync your content back to your phone. If not, proceed AT YOUR OWN RISK!
    2. Try and downgrade to 3.1.3 from here:
    http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Note: Before you try this, bear in mind this is NOT endorsed by Apple & that you run the risk of making your phone inoperable.

  • I have an ipod touch 4th gen, installed the latest update to iOS 6 and have lost all my music. Where did it go?

I have an ipod touch 4th gen, installed the latest update to iOS 6 and have lost all my music, apps etc. It also linked up with an alternate email address???? Help!

I have a similar issue happenning with my ipod touch 64GB running IOS 6.0.1.  My music content is stored via itunes on my Snow Leopard macbook pro as well (and not in the cloud).  The music on my ipod (which is sync'd to my macbook pro when I connect via usb) has randomly disappeared about 3 or 4 times lately, not during sync'ing and unrelated to battery charge levels. Fortunately I have been able to restore it by restarting my macbook pro then re-syncing the ipod, which it is now doing as I write, but it takes hours (for over 3000 songs).  Having looked at a few other forum discussion pages, it seems this may be a bug related to IOS 6 updates and using music/itunes and podcast playing apps. The same thing has intermittently occurred with some other content such as downloaded podcasts, iplayer content and photos. Once I reconnected the ipod it synced and apparently restored the content, but I can't understand why it lost it in the first place, and its very annoying. Lets hope the reinstalling works on my ipod tonight....up to 248 of 3326 songs syncing as I write....

  • Latest update doesn't recognize iPod

After I updated iTunes yesterday, my iPod doesn't show up or sync. I know it's not the USB cable, because when attached to my computer, my iPod starts charging. It just won't appear on iTunes. I know I'm not the only one having this problem. Is there anyway to uninstall the latest update, or will we just have to wait until Apple creates something to fix the issue?

I'm running Windows 8.1 and ran into same issue.
Updated to latest version of iTunes, Windows could see the device but iTunes could not.
Here's how I fixed the issue:
Go to Device Manager:  winkey+pause/break on keyboard then select "Device Manager".
Look for "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver".
It should be located under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers", mine was not.  It was found under "Mobile Devices".
If your driver is located under any heading other than, "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" iTunes will not recognize your device(s).  Be sure to search under all the device manager headers until you locate that specific driver.
Once you have found the driver location, make sure your device is plugged into a USB port on your PC/Laptop.
    1. Right-click "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" and select "uninstall".  Follow prompts to uninstall.
    2. Right-click heading "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and select "Scan for hardware changes".
"Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" will now be installed under the proper heading and iTunes will discover and sync with your device(s).
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers!

  • I have just updated my Ipod to the latest ios.(deleting everything) and using different sources to get my music back it seems that every time i select multiple/individual songs on itunes i can change artwork but will not show up on my ipod?

I have a windows 8 computer and have recently updated my ipod to the latest ios and it has wiped my Ipod clean except for my photos. whilst trying to get my music back using different sources like CD's and stuff i cant seem to get any album art to load on my Ipod? I can go on itunes and highlight single/multiple items and change the artwork and my computer will confirm it but when I look on my Ipod it doesnt display any art work or allow me to change the artwork that is already there? i need help please!

Album artwork can be added/changed on songs via the iTunes Get Info menu item from the File menu. Note that music that you loaded from CDs will not have any artwork. If you want to aquire artwork you can try the File menu item Library > Get Artwork or you can download artwork from the internet, etc. Note that just changing artwork on your computer won't affect the iPod until you sync.
If the artwork is correct on your computer iTunes then delete all the music on your iPod by syncing with iTunes with no music selected. Then reload the music onto your iPod by again syncing with iTunes with all the music you want selected.

  • I updated my iPod touch 4th generation from the latest iOS 4 update (i think maybe iOS 4.3.5 or something like that) to iOS 5.1.1 and my Photos, Videos, contacts, music, App data, etc. was deleted. How can I all the data back?

I updated my iPod touch 4th generation from the latest iOS 4 update (i think maybe iOS 4.3.5 or something like that) to iOS 5.1.1. I updated to iOS 5.1.1 on a Windows XP Home Edition with the Service Pack 3 installed on the Windows XP (which I believe is the latest version). After updating, I unplugged my iPod from the computer. I saw that all my photos and videos were on my iPod, but there were no apps. A window popped up and told me to enter a passcode for my iPod. I entered a passcode. I then locked my iPod and entered what I thought to be the correct passcode, but my iPod remained unlocked. Desperate, I tried many passcodes with failure. After a while, my iPod became disabled for a long time. I decided to reset my iPod. After I reseted it, I chose to reset from my earlier back up. After reseting, my computer loaded on all my apps. But, when I started using my iPod, I realized all my photos, videos, music, app data (like game saves and high scores), etc. were gone! I have no idea what to do and I am very stressed about this! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET ALL MY STUFF BACK!!!!!!

Go to iTunea>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backupright at the time you did the update. Then try restoring from that backup. If the apps are in your iTunes library, any app data will be restored to the iPod.
When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode). iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.
Therefore, remembe the passcode that you enter this time.
It appears that if you restore from a backup, that backup is not subseqyently overwritten by the next backup.
