Running LessTif on Tiger

I am trying to run LessTif on Tiger but unsucessful. Earlier I have download LessTif tarball and compile/install. My intention is to run ddd (graphical gdb) but first must get LessTif running. Running mwm on xterm (/usr/X11R6/bin/mwm), put an error message
mwm: Error: Another WM is running
I tried launching under quartz terminal, another error message,
Error: Can't open display:
How do I run mwm ?

Hi Peter,
How about using fink?
fink install ddd
will install ddd along with all dependencies (including lesstif).  For more details, I recommend Bill Scott's wonderful web site.

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

  • Running Classic on Tiger

Hi - I have just purchased a new 20 inch imac and am running 10.4 tiger. I have an old G4 at work and have acquired quark4 and 5 from there. It seems that other osx macs in the office can run software in classic but when I try and launch Xpress5 it says (here on my new machine) that the OS doesn't support it. Can I run in classic via a download or something?

    Hi apple_cam;
It appears from what I read on the web that there is an upgraded version of Xpress5 that runns on OS X. Maybe upgrading your software might be simpler than attempt to run the old OS on your new hardware.

  • HP 7210 running correctly with Tiger and Classic ?

I would like to buy a new printer which would be running
    perfectly under Tiger and Classic.
Did you test this one with success?
    I'm asking this question because:
    - The HP web server isn't sufficiently clear about this
    point.
    - The technical persons I got on the phone at HP hotline
    were worse.
Could you advise me a color printer (with scanner and
copier) which is running without a problem on:
    - Panther,
    - Tiger,
    - Classic on Tiger?
    dan

Classic printing is a mixed bag. I do know Cannon's website actually lists certain printers as compatible with Classic. I haven't seen such specifications in any other manufacturer's website. I might add though, some printers can be made Classic compatible with these articles' info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300849
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh660.html
I suggest getting the printer from a place with a liberal return policy so if neither of these work, you can try another printer.
What program do you need that you don't have to be Mac OS X native? Perhaps I can recommend an alternative which is.

  • Can't Open a Library Created Under iTunes 10 - Can't Run 10 With Tiger

My daughter has one of the early intel based MacBooks -- it shipped with, and she still runs OS X 10.4 Tiger.
With the small internal hard drive she has had her iTunes music on an external. That drive recently died but - no problem - 99% of the music came from our home collection so I copied my iTunes library to a new external for her.
But when she tries to get her iTunes to point to / use / whatever the term the library on the external iTunes says it can't use that library because it was created using iTunes 10 (the version I run on my mac). She runs iTunes 9 on her MacBook. And when she tries to upgrade to iTunes 10 it needs Leopard or Snow Leopard and won't work on her Tiger system.
I know she could buy a new OS but she isn't keen on investing too much on a 3 1/2 year old machine.
Is there a work around so she can play my music (from my iTunes 10 library) on her OS X 10.4, iTunes 9 system?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    How is the EHD formatted?
If the external hard drive is not formatted OS X Extended (journaled) Photos will not be able to open them.  Actually iPhoto requires the volume to be formatted that way also but doesn't check the format before opening.  Many users have been able to operated on EHDs that were not formatted properly for a while but eventually ended up with a damage/corrupted library.

  • Mac OS X Server: Can I install that in a Intel iMac running OS X Tiger?

    Hello,
I really want to buy the Mac OS X Server Tiger Software, but before that I still have lots of questions, so here is just one question:
    - How can I install that on my iMac Intel running Tiger OS X? Do I need to make a pertition of my MBR Hard Drive in order to be able to fully run Mac OS X Server on my 2Ghz Intel Mac?
Thank you, hope you got a solution for my problem.

    > How can I install that on my iMac Intel running Tiger OS X
Umm, you mean other than inserting the DVD, double-clicking the 'Install Mac OS X Server' app and following the on-screen instructions?
    >Do I need to make a pertition of my MBR Hard Drive in order to be able to fully run Mac OS X Server on my 2Ghz Intel Mac?
If you want to, sure. There's no need to do this, though. The only reason to create a separate partition is if you wanted to dual-boot your machine so that you could switch between Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server, but that's entirely optional.

  • Running Leopard and Tiger at the same time VMWare fusion/Parallels?

    Hello,
I was wondering, is it possible to run Tiger and Leopard at the same time? Some older applications won't run properly in Leopard. The iMac came both with Tiger and Leopard (last November). It has been described elsewhere that one can install Tiger and Leopard on separate partitions and switch by rebooting. But it would be nice if one could run Tiger in Leopard like one can run Windows/Unix using VMWare Fusion or Parallels. Is that feasible?
    best wishes

I agree with you that virtualizing Mac OS X would be great. I'm an Apple technician and it would really help with my work. But Apple's EULA does not permit the use of OS X in a VM. They changed OS X Server's EULA recently to permit it, but not the "client version".
So your Mac can virtualize nearly any OS out there, but not OS X. And I believe (not sure) that a VM of OS X Server will only run on OS X Server.

  • Can I install OS X Server for Leopard on Macs running non-server Tiger?

I need to install OS X Server on a small business network of 5 Macs and 2 pc's. I need to run Mac software on the pc's using Aqua and need to use the pc's to run software that won't run on the Macs.
All my Macs run 10.4.11 (non-server), so what I need to know is will I be able to buy and install OS X Server (Leopard)? Or do I need to buy OS X Server (Tiger)?
And if I can use the Leopard Server version, can I also install it on my Macs at home that don't connect to the work network?
    Thanks, Ted

    I'm a little confused here.
I need to run Mac software on the pc's using Aqua
Running Mac OS X Server on the Macs won't help here. You can't run Mac software on a PC. The best you can do is screen-share (so the PC can run software that lets it see and control the Mac's screen), but you don't need Mac OS X Server for that.
All my Macs run 10.4.11 (non-server), so what I need to know is will I be able to buy and install OS X Server (Leopard)? Or do I need to buy OS X Server (Tiger)?
You can't but Mac OS X Server 10.4 at all now. It's been EOL for a year or more (I forget when Leopard was released now). Your only option is to buy Leopard Server.
As to whether you can install Leopard Server, that depends on the hardware you're running. If it meets (or exceeds) the minimum specifications for Mac OS X Server then yes, you can install it. Whether it will solve your goals depends on quite what those goals are.
And if I can use the Leopard Server version, can I also install it on my Macs at home that don't connect to the work network?
You can install it on any system you're licensed for. Since each copy of Mac OS X Server is licensed for a single system only, you'll need to buy additional licenses for your machine(s) at home.

  • Macs running OS X Tiger 10.4.4 keep shutting themselves down!

We have a no. of macs connected to an OS X Tiger server and at the same time everyday, one by one the macs drop off the network and then shut themselves down! It's exactly 5 minute intervals between each mac. Has anyone had any shut down problems with Tiger. There are macs with OS 9 installed, and they do the same thing. The macs run fine during the day and it starts happening between 5.30pm and 6.00pm. Surely if there was a power problem all the macs would shut down immediately. The software settings have been checked and they are not congfigured to shut down at a certain time. The server has no configuration to shutdown nor control the clients. We are stumped! Help please anyone?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo Mac, follow the Core Duo instructions and then buy a download code for Lion from the online Apple Store.

  • Is time running out for Tiger?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm getting a little edgy as time goes by -
I get on fine with Tiger and am not too happy about going through the hassle (and cost) of upgrading to Leopard. Obviously upgrades have long finished for Tiger but Leopard goes on improving in minor ways (I imagine).
Can anyone tell me if Tiger is likely to meet a nasty end soon (I had this problem with OS9 some years ago)?
And, apart from this, could I have a brief summary as to why moving to Leopard would be a good idea as far as function is concerned?

Your newer software upgrades may be where costs could be a little tall,
if you should need to continue using professional apps and find they
may be way out of date (since some don't find support in Snow Leopard)
so budget on that contingency and perhaps some of the ones you use
won't be orphan-ware at a time when you'd otherwise not expect it.
To have and use an older computer for offline or local use, along with a
time capsule of vintage apps, may be fine; but if your use includes a
form of production or shared works over a network (local or internet)
then another matter arises, in being compatible.
Also, software updates, security updates, and other items are part of
the support picture where an operating system and associated hardware
can be expected to keep up to a level of that compatibility in business
and to be able to connect to the ever evolving internet.
One way to upgrade, is to get a later model computer which includes
the recent OS X and is very well suited to running it; maybe a nice
last model well proven Mac from the online Store's refurbished deals?
Or an all-new model from the online store. Some authorized resellers
may have an older model and not that great a deal, when the actual
Apple store or online one, has the most recent for a better overall deal.
My antiques are chugging along OK at the present, but I do have the
last OS X version and other software suited for their last upgrade steps
so the expectation at some point, would be a hardware failure costing
more than the actions involved in a repair, given the vintage involved.
And the lack of apps, utilities, updates, and security; new browsers,
Flash/Shockwave and other support, etc; is always moving onward.
So, to set up another computer and adopt the latest OS X and apps
then start migrating your work over as best you can, is one idea. At
some point, you could also use one of your ancient Macs to run a
variant unix freeware system, an experiment; just because it's possible.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Does the PowerBook run better on Tiger or Leopard?

I have been running my PowerBook on Leopard. I've been noticing it getting slower doing Internet, iWeb, iWork and other programs. I'm wondering if I should switch it to Tiger. Or is there a double boot I can run so I can run both Tiger and Leopard?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Depends.. I have the last model PowerBook G4 1.67 W/ the hi-res display. It has DDR2 memory and one modification I just completed was added a PATA Legacy SSD drive and this thing flies!! Bear this in mind that the only reason I have a PowerBook G4 is because I have no use for an intel laptop, as I have a 2010 mac pro 6-core and a Gateway P-6860fx + a G4 Pismo(well, upgraded G3).
I was just in the Apple store tonight and took a look at the new macbook pros. My only hope is that Thunderbolt will be a PCIe drop in for current and past mac pros(2010.2009.2008).
I am typing this on a G4 PowerBook as we speak
If you have 150.00, get a 120GB or smaller SSD - You will be glad you did,. Leopard runs very well on this laptop. Again, I can't speak for your laptop, but for the last models of the G4 powerbooks - mine runs Leopard very nicely!
And yes, through HTML5 and quicktime codecs, I can play HD 720 and barely 1080p on this and thats without flash! HTML5 is breathing new life into the PowerPC.
I love both platforms.. I am not an intel fanboi.

  • Running 10.4 Tiger on 533MHz Power Mac G4

Can 10.4 Tiger run on a 533MHz Power Mac G4?
I know a DVD drive is required for installation. It could be an external DVD drive, correct? Is there any other way I could upgrade it without a DVD drive?

Can 10.4 Tiger run on a 533MHz Power Mac G4?
    Yes.
I know a DVD drive is required for installation.
It's only required if you have a DVD installer. It can be installed from CDs if you can find those.
It could be an external DVD drive, correct?
    FireWire only.
Is there any other way I could upgrade it without a DVD drive?
FireWire Target disk mode. Other options are available if you have access to a Mac OS X Server box.

  • Running classic in Tiger????

Probably a stupid question, but I can't get my computer to run in Classic mode. It acts like it is going to start when I try and run Photoshop 6 and never actually does. What should I do?

You're asking for three different issues.
    1) The Quicktime message will dissapear if you install a new Quicktime version.
    2) If you install Photoshop 6 you can't make the upgrade to a newer version.
This is the example: I've got Adobe Photoshop CS (version 8), it's a completely different version from the 6, I mean, you can't make the "upgrade" from one version over the other one.
Some applications and operative systems made some adjustment here and there from time to time, but, sometimes there's a need for a bigger step, and you need a complete new version to do that.
    3) Keeping Classic or not it's a matter of taste, you'll find people who's still in love with OS 9, others without OS 9 since the first OS X. My personal experience, and I'm without OS 9 since a year or so, if you can make the move to the OS X versions for all your applications and extra stuff, it's great. But what if?...
Perhaps you've got some strange and crazy files with no chance no use them in OSX, or you don't want to spend some extra money getting new version from applications you already paid long ago and far away. This last choice is really weird, but possible, because right now you've got almost everything little thing from the OS 9, one way or another, working great in OS X.
