Running off NAS cannot use iCloud Photo Library

After re-loading 32000 (190gb) photos into a Clean new library running off my NAS, i decide to turn on iCloud
photo sharing.
I then get this awesome message
iCloud for Photo Library is only available on Mac OS Standard and Mac OS Extended formatted volumes.
What the !
Why would Apple care what format the HDD is where my Library is located ?
I don't have enough space on my internal SSD and it was not very safe running it off
a USB HDD
I'm running this off a Synology NAS i really hope they fix this.

Have a look at this Help page:
              System Library Overview
Among other, it says:
By default, your System Photo Library is stored in the Pictures folder on your Mac, but you can move it to another location on your Mac or store it on an external storage device. However, to use iCloud services, the external storage device must be formatted using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, also known as HFS+.

  • Photos will not open, stuck on "Use iCloud Photo Library Page"

I have had my photos app running for three days now and it still hasn't created a library. It is stuck on the Second screen after initializing the app for the first time which gives you the choice between use iCloud photo Library and not now. When I try to quit the app a dialog box pops up saying "Photos is creating or opening a library - cannot quit while it creating or opening a library"
    Can Photos be re-installed?
Bit of background, I have a 3th fusion drive iMac from late 2013 and I am a photographer with about 1tb of photos on the local drive, is it overwhelming Photos?
    Thanks

    Hi VtBoomer,
Lets see if we can clear this up. When you turn on iCloud Photo Library beta, you are essentially switching from a collection of photos that is stored on your iPhone and moving the photos to iCloud. It does actually use iCloud storage when you do this. What this accomplishes is if you have multiple devices, then they will be in sync across all other iOS and your computer. Take a look at the FAQs page below to answer any other questions you may have.

  • Can I use iCloud Photo Library on just one of my Devices

I have an iPhone and an iPod touch. Can I use iCloud photo library on my iPhone and not on my iPod touch? Could I see them on my iPod if I do so?
The reason I am asking is because I have like 600 photos on my iPod and only like 50 on my Phone so I would like to put the photos from  my phone onto iCloud Photo Library.

    Anyone?

  • Is there a way to use iCloud Photo Library WITHOUT syncing?

The idea I had of iCloud Photo Library was that I could upload my pictures to it and access them from all my devices WITHOUT having to sync them.
At the end of every month, I move all the photos from my phone to my computer. It helps me save space and keep things tidy. With iCloud Library, I want to access all my photos, but it looks like I must sync them through iCloud, and then to save space in my phone, I have to select "optimise space for iPhone". Is there any way to use iCloud Photo Library as a mere cloud storage? I don't want to keep photos on my phone, neither full resolution or "optimised" ones. I want to put them on iCloud, and when I need them, then I want my phone to download them.
I realise I could use other cloud storage providers for this, but I have always liked Apple's integration with their own services, so if possible, I would like to use iCloud Photo Library without syncing to my devices. Just keep my stuff in iCloud, and when I tap it, download it.

    www.icloud.com.
Doesn't work well in IE8 (9 I would think is ok), but is fine in the current version of Chrome.

  • Share an album using iCloud Photo Library

    Hello.
I'm currently using the iCloud Photo Library and it's great.
But, I want to share an album (or just a few photos). But iCloud Photo Library does still not allow to share an album.
So, I want to use a Shared PhotoStream Album. And it seems that the iPhone is uploading my files (photos and videos) to the Shared PhotoStream.
Tell me if it is right... In fact, why the phone is re-uploading the videos/photos if there are already uploaded to my iCloud Library ?
    Best regards,
    Alexis

If I want to share some pictures and videos, I have to specify which photos, album and person... Yes, of course. But when I want to validate the creation of the album, I'll have to wait a long time, in particular if my Wifi is slow. In fact, if the video is already uploaded in the iCloud Photo Library, Apple should simply copy/paste it in the Share Album...

  • Can I still make a backup when i'm using iCloud photo library?

I want to know that if i'm using the iCloud photo library, i will be able to make a backup in itunes on my mac?

    But i mean in iTunes.
Can I change the settings in iCloud, that I only have a backup in iTunes??

  • How to transfer old photos from iMac to iPad using iCloud Photo Library

iMac with Yosemite, iPad with iOS 8.1.  New photos taken on any device are shared automatically with all other devices.  But, older photos on iMac are not being shared with iPad or iPhone.  The options to synch selected photos on iMac with iPad don't seem to be there any more now that iCloud Photo Library is enabled on iPad.
I imagine that iCloud Photo Library's capabilities only apply to new photos.  Is there a way to move old photos over for viewing on other devices?

    John,
You can share selected photos to your Photo Stream, if you enable the iCloud features, or create an album of the selected photos and transfer them using iTunes Photo sync.
For iCloud see: iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ, iCloud: Using and troubleshooting Shared Photo Streams
For iTunes see: iTunes: Syncing photos
Or, simply mail them in high quality and save them from your Mail to your camera roll, if it are only a few photos.

  • When using iCloud Photo Library: Delete photos after iPhoto-import, or not?

Now this issue may belong into iCloud, iPhoto or iPhone section as well, so I hope it’s ok to put it here …
Before iCloud Photo Library appeared on stage, I would regularly sync my iPhone camera roll with iPhoto. Then (upon iPhotos request) I'd have them deleted from my iPhone. And finally I'd sync back with iTunes - where I had set it to sync "all photos from last 12 months".
However, now I have turned on iCloud Photo Library on my iPhone, and am quite happy so far. Nonetheless - as it still is in beta - I prefer to additionally sync with iPhoto, so as to have my originals safely stored locally.
That said, after importing into iPhoto I wonder if I still should say „yes“ to the "Delete from iPhone" popup? I tested it, and to my surprise all „deleted“ photos remain untouched and available on my iPhone - say in iCloud Photo library! When I agreed to delete them, I expected that they’d all disappear into thin air. But that is not the case.
So what’s happening here? What is the sense of „yes, delete“ when these pics do *not* get deleted then?
Of course I'd *want to keep them* in iCloud Photo Library, but anyway, I don't understand this behaviour at all. And as some friends have asked the very same question, I thought to ask you Apple specialists here. Thank you in advance for giving me deeper insight into Apples actual photo handling secrets.

    No idea about this, anybody?

  • I just started using iCloud Photo Library (Beta) and am wondering if I can delete photos from my iPhone and have them remain on my iCloud Photo Library -- is this possible?

    Yes, that should be possible.

I want to be able to use iCloud photo library on all my i-Devices, with the same photo library. I can log in with the same iCloud account on all devices, but, then I can't get FindMyFriends to work, because each IOS device needs it's own iCloud account for FindMyFriends.

You will need to contact the previous owner of the iPhone in order to change the Apple ID.

  • How can i download photos to my IPhone after Disable and Delete ICloud Photo Library?

I`ve started to use Icloud Photo Library, but i`ve decided to not use anymore because just a few photos were uploaded to the cloud.
So, I`ve turned off my ICloud Photo Library entirely at Manage Storage section of ICloud Settings. After that i`ve been trying to re-download my photos to my IPhone, by "Transfer and Keep Originals" set up, but it isn`t working!

You cannot.  this is how the iphone handles photos.
ALL PHOTOS synced to iphone can be accessed via the "Photo Library".  Those same photos can also be accessed from the folders that you synced.  Just as you can find a book in your public library and you find the same book in the fiction section.
Stop trying to resolve it as there is nothign to resolve.  All is working as it should.

  • ICloud Photo Library - a really poor support experience (and still unresolved)

I am using (or should I say trying to use) iCloud photo library on iOS 8.1.2 and on an iPhone 5S with 32Gb memory. I bought 200 Gb of Cloud storage too so was ready to go with about 12 Gb of photos.
It was about 3 weeks ago when I turned it on and was initially hopeful, as the number of photos left to sync gradually decreased on my device (there are about 4000 to do). I could see they were coming up at iCloud.com and all looked good for the first 600 or so. And then it "stalled" for the first time and nothing seemed to help - reboot, airplane mode on/off. Occasionally it might do a couple more but then it would just stop.
So, I logged out of iCloud on my device and logged back in again. A long pause whilst everything resyncs and then the photo resync begins again... from the start... 4000 to go. It got further this time, to 800 and every now and then it would process a few more. I left it a week and a half to see what it would do but eventually sure enough it stalls again.
My first chat session with Apple support and the engineer suggests resetting the network settings... nothing.
So the a second chat session with Apple support and the engineer suggests logging out of iCloud on the device and turning it on again. I'm reluctant to go the start of the process again, but I do and overnight I'm rewarded by getting to about 1200 photos this time. And then it stops, so I reset the network settings. A few more and it stops again. By now, I'm pulling my hair out.
So another long chat session and after repeating all of the above an escalation is requested to a senior engineer. A call back is made to me and after a wait of 15 mins on the phone (Apple called me!) the senior engineer begins to lecture me on what beta software is (I know, it's software pre-full release with a few minor issues left to resolve). I politely ask what the next steps might be and the engineer explains to me that I should have no realistic expectations that it should actually work. Her experience is such that uploads may not register with iCloud, downloads may not register with my device and that I may LOSE photos! When I protest, again politely, that this might not be acceptable she hangs up.
The chat engineer who is waiting for my call promises to complain on my behalf to the management and offers a call rescheduled for later which I take up. That was 30 mins ago.
The call comes, I wait 15 mins in the queue again (it tells you a 2 min wait!!!) and then guess what, the call hangs up again.
So here what I am left with. A sync that has now taken 3 weeks and ultimately is no more than a quarter complete. No confidence in the sync process or any idea of what might be causing my connection to fail. 4 hours wasted this weekend with Apple support. The rudeness of staff hanging up on my calls and lecturing me on the merits of beta software. £3 a month paid for storage that I cannot fill.
I can only conclude that the iPhone photo cloud library is not ready and the support staff feel unable to offer any support on next steps. "Beta" or not, you really have to ask if this is good enough.
Apple - if you're reading, you still have my outstanding call back on ref:722150884 sceduled for 16:30 GMT on 11th Jan 2015. Your system says this is still outstanding. If you're ready to call back with a genuine bid to help and an acknowledgement of the problem please feel free. If the software just isn't ready, just say and we can all move on with our lives.

This is a user-to-user support forum, not a way to communicate with Apple regarding a support call or issue. (Just trying to save you some more frustration when you don't get a response to this post from Apple).
As a user, I can note that it is beta software, I don't trust it with my photos and I'm not willing to spend the time dealing with issues that can be involved in beta software. There are a number of more proven 3rd party cloud storage options available.

  • HT6378 How to upload iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library?

    Hi,
I am having a MBP mid 2012 w/ Yosemite along w/ iPhone and iPad, all running 8.1. After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
On the iCloud, All Photos folder just shows a fraction of what's on my Mac iPhoto library, probably the most recent pictures I have taken and there's no sign of any automatic uploading as suggested by all Apple Ads...
    Thanks
    S

After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
iPhoto on your Mac is not supposed to work with iCloud Photo Library. The new "Photos" app for the mac will be able to do it. The release of this app  has been announced for "Early next year".
For now, only your mobile devices can upload to iCloud Photo Library.  So you have to upload your photos to the mobile devices to get them into iCloud Photo Library Beta.
That is not easy, because you cannot upload from your iPhoto library to your iOS 8 devices using iTunes with  iCloud Photo Library Beta enabled on the device. It will disable syncing photos with iTunes. As long as you are using  iCloud Photo Library Beta, mail the Photos to your devices or upload using Photo Stream.

  • Downloading photos from iCloud Photo Library

Apple removed the iDevice iPhoto app and Camera Roll  ability to send photos to iTunes for transfer to my iMac, my iMac is too old by a couple months to use Airdrop, and one can only send 5 photos at a time thru email from the Camera Roll or the Photos app.
I finally figured out that the iCloud Photo Library is now the only way to get the photos out of my iDevices and onto my (apparently outdated) iMac.
I don't anticipate using my iDevices as my primary photo creator, so it is not my intention to permanently store photos in the iCloud Photo Library.  But occasionally, I don't have a real camera handy.
Works fine.  Photos end up in the iCloud Library, I go into iCloud on my iMac and download the photos to my iMac download folder, move them to my photos disk, and delete them from the iCloud PL.
Okay. all the blah blah blah is done, now my question to which I can find no answer:
How can I stop the download from automatically opening Adobe Photoshop Elements (or any other viewer/editor) for every photo I download.?
Gets pretty tedious when I download 100 photos and have to wait for them to load into PS before I can close PS and get on with moving the photos to their final resting place.

In direct answer to your question: I don't connect to my iMac with the iDevices and use iPhoto because I stopped using iPhoto in 2007, long before iDevices came into my life and I've just never had a reason to open iPhoto again.  I also like having my photos in folders where I know where they are, and if I recall, importing photos to iPhoto from my own folders ended up placing a second copy in the bowels of iPhoto.  I didn't need duplicate copies.
Until iOS 8 came along, I have been able to export photos thru the iPhoto iOS app via iTunes -- grabbing the folder under the "apps" tab "File Sharing" area in iTunes and placing it wherever I wished.  I seldom if ever used the iPad  for video, but if I did, it was to make a short iMovie and export it via iTunes File Sharing as well. The file sharing option is now gone for photos, although still remains (for the time being) for iMovie.
It never occurred to me to look in iPhoto, so checked out your suggestion, and I do see that you are correct, and connecting my iDevices to my iMac with iPhoto open is assuredly a good way to get both photos and video exported to my own folders.
However, with the iPhoto app File Sharing option gone from the iDevice environment, and no visible way to export my photos/videos to my iMac, as explained previously, I checked out the iCloud Photo Library (beta) option. As I have also stated, I log into iCloud on my iMac (https://www.icloud.com/#photos) and all my photos and videos are sitting there happily waiting for me to do what I will with them.  What I will, is to download them to my iMac and delete them from the iCloud Photo Library.
The process works just fine, except that I do have to double-check that all of the selected items actually did download.  Often one or two little fellows have to be selected again and downloaded.
Although you have shown me an easier option which I will be using on those future rare occasions when I am without my "real" camera, my question still remains: how do I prevent my editing program (photos) and Quicktime (videos) from opening automatically when I download the respective items.
Since you believe I cannot be using iCloud Photo Library on the Mac, you can't provide the answer I seek.
But I sincerely thank you for providing me with the option I didn't even know existed. I may well turn off the ICloud Photo Library permanently and forget it.  However, it would be more handy if I am traveling, since Photo Stream all by itself only makes photos available to other devices where they can be placed in the Camera Roll as backup.
Thanks again for the reply and the option.

  • Transferring and Deleting photos from iOs Devices with iCloud Photo Library

So when there was iPhoto for iOs, it was easy to transfer the folders that I made on my iOs device and then delete those photos using iPhoto for iOs. Now it doesn't seem that easy (when you have a ton of photos on the device.) So has anyone found an easy way to transfer all the photos from a folder and then delete all those photos off of the device once they are transferred?

Regardless about what else is going on here or the questions you have -- the absolute first thing to know is that if you choose to use "iCloud Photo Library" then you are a "beta tester" who is using a beta service ... namely one that is NOT RELEASED as final or stable. In other words, you cannot depend on it working or keeping your photos.
THEN the other thing you should realize is that if you use this beta service, then you have turned off your "iCloud Backup" for all yours photos. In other words iCloud will NO LONGER back up your photos.
All in all the above means that BEFORE you even attempt to use iCloud Photo Library, you better have all your photos backed up to an alternate and outside service or facility (apart from Apple) ... because that will be the only effective backup you will have for your photos.
You might look into Dropbox as that works well for me.
